Today on the pod, the return of a Herle Burly O.G. When we first had an inkling about what this podcast was going to be in 2017, we launched with our first guest ever, David Axelrod.
Our second guest ever? Well, it was this man who was kind enough to take our call and say, “Yeah, what the fuck. Let’s do it.” Nick Kouvalis said some shit that day on the pod. He was damned honest. And damned refreshing. And his episode was a large part of what told us this thing could be successful. For those who didn’t hear that show in those nascent days, Nick is a super successful political consultant and strategist. Nick knows how to win elections.
He’s a Principal at Campaign Research, a firm he co-founded in 2008. He managed Rob Ford’s winning campaign in 2010, later becoming his Chief of Staff. And then he became Chief Strategist for John Tory’s campaign to replace Ford in 2014, emerging with a victory over Rob’s brother Doug, who went on to become premier with, guess what, Nick’s help. Nick was also a key advisor to Liberal Premier Christy Clark in the 2013 B.C. election.
Today we’re going to talk about what the hell is going on in Canadian politics. Vote shifts. And the reason for those vote shifts.

Nick said when he worked at Chrysler he got paid $34 an hour. This is true.
What he doesn’t know, is that 2 years ago, Autoworkers starting wage was $17 for Autoworkers and senior hands made $35 hour.
The auto industry was once good paying jobs, those days are gone. I just wish Ontario policy makers and the media were aware of this.

I should note that Nick’s starting pay of $34 was in 1999, in 1999 dollars.
In contrast to NEW workers getting $17 in 2021 with the tiered wage structure.
These were great middle class jobs in the past, but now are more or less jobs for the working poor.

Great episode. Nick is smart as a fox and hilarious 😂 His insights are great to hear. Invite him back. PS. I’m getting addicted to David’s smoky throaty laugh 😂 is that allowed even though I’m Conservative?? 😜😜

According for Donald J Savoie in his book Democracy in Canada - regionalism in Canada is our version and as pervasive as the effect of slavery in the US. Having the Feds - the Liberals - campaign against Smith & Alberta and playing to the Ontario populace, is the definition of Canadian “regionalism” - a historic prejudice that runs through the national character.

Very good discussion. Nick said what everyone is thinking. “…he’s just a dummy”

He is obviously going to say that he works for the Conservatives and clearly has a personal dislike for Trudeau. He said Trudeau is 6-5 rofl. I am 6-2 and have met Trudeau in person he is not that tall he is definitely shorter than me probably 6-1 with shoes on. However dude is fit as fuck and his abs are real no airbrushing required like a pro-athlete. My guess is those videos/news coverage of him jogging or doing planks on tables overseas are a story only because he is doing it overseas. He probably works out everyday or at bare minimum sticks with the cardio on cheat days.😂😂

This podcast is usually fair and balanced and am glad David tries to keep it that way with his 3 amigos in tow each week. Nick is a very smart man not afraid to say what he thinks. I like that.

Another great podcast. Nick was slow to get going, but then he became very animated. One of the best non partisan podcasts available today. Sure beats Breakfast Tv with their liberal bias on full display. Keep up the great work Dave. Signed. Your Conservative friend.

While I don’t disagree that a majority of Canadians are tired of Justin Trudeau, this guy is clearly a Conservative spin doctor. For example when he talks about Doug Ford the economy is great and jobs are being created but when he talks about Trudeau all of a sudden the economy is bad. Which is it?
I’ll be very interested to see what the Conservatives have for priorities and how they think they can both fight climate change (which the vast majority of Canadians think is needed) and come up with an alternative to a carbon tax.

I mean driving hard into LNG lets them have a message about replacing coal with natural gas.
A push toward nuclear, maybe getting some SMRs online, would give them a pair of substantive talking points on the issue and it would put downward pressure on GSG emissions.

He literally says in the interview the difference between Ford and Trudeau is communication. Ford airs ads on the taxpayer’s dime about everything he does and holds press conferences whenever he hands out cheques to people or companies. Trudeau on the other hand can’t spend government money as much on ads because of Federal rules and the Liberals federally are not fundraising enough to air their own flashy ads or attack ads on Poilievre to compete until a Federal Election is called and both parties regardless of financing deal with elections Canada spending caps.😂😂

Trudeau is campaigning everyday and holding press conferences everyday and even announcing money that was announced months ago. Spending time visiting people's houses and meeting with kids in schoolyards. All on the taxpayer's dime. The Liberals get all the press and TV coverage they want even if it is to announce a nothing burger.

@@sharonlott1986that is not the same thing as Doug Ford he is airing these bias commercials on tv even during the Canadian broadcast of the Super Bowl on ctv and tsn that is like Ontario is where it is happening. It is a government funded ad that clearly promotes the Ontario Conservatives Party without mentioning it. Trudeau doesn’t air expensive ads on tv for the Liberal Party or the Government because of stricter Federal advertising rules and the Liberal Party’s growing fundraising disparity with the Conservatives. It looks like they are saving all their money to roll out their own ads whenever an election is called and they can spend exactly dollar for dollar the same money with the Conservatives capped under Elections Canada rules.

I love this podcast and the conversations week in and week out. Great episode with Nick. But am I the only one who noticed that David is having a full turkey dinner every episode? Lol the amount of lipsmacking he does and mouth clicking is distracting.
Also Nick’s point on running against Danielle Smith is 100% correct. No one is going to believe Trudeau and it will look so desperate if he starts picking a fight with Alberta at this point.

    • @Sam19509
      @Sam19509 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

lol Alberta picks a fight with him every single day of the week. He is going to swing back like he did with Jason Kenney. The problem is Albertans know Smith is a nutter and baked that opinion in even though they re-elected her.😂😂
