One of my favourite things about this gig, is the panel conversations we put together here on the pod. I think they’re unique conversations, with a level of experience and depth of thinking all-too rare these days in media.
This series is one of my favourites… The Chiefs are back! Making their 5th appearance here on The Herle Burly, 3 former Chiefs of Staff to some of Canada’s most accomplished heads of government.
Ian Brodie - first Chief of Staff to Stephen Harper, and central to the founding of the CPC. Now … Professor of Political Science at the University of Calgary.
Tim Murphy - former Chief of Staff to Paul Martin … now CEO and Managing
Partner at McMillan LLP.
Brian Topp - former Chief of Staff to Rachel Notley in Alberta … Deputy Chief to Roy Romanow in Saskatchewan … and one of the architects of Jack Layton’s Orange Wave. Today, he’s a founding partner at GT&co.
We struck this panel to discuss the issues from the perspective of people who think about them NOT as campaigners do - i.e., what might be ideal in a political sense - but rather, from the POV of what’s possible to deliver in a governing sense. And so today, 7 days after the federal budget and its suite of measures, we’ll do a situation assessment of the government and all the parties. So, all the governing grist you could ever want, packed into the next hour.

I find it so fascinating that one of the attack lines was “do Canadians want children running the government“
That’s been the last nine years of Trudeau’s virtue signalling nonsense
Pollieve has been saying for a year that we should sell off land and buildings but NDP/Libs say he has no ideas - now it is in Liberal budget
Bring it home!
It is concerning to hear so little of Poilievre's plans. At the same time, I'm looking forward to a prime minister who knows when to shut up.
Great discussion.
It was Pollievre’s plan (brilliant according to The NDP guy) to use crown land.
This government just needs to stop poking Canadians in the eye and telling them they are blind not to see how great they are.
All things considered this unworthy budget is just another sign of depraved indifference. Or rather "it's got stuff in it you can sell"
There is an Anti-Immigration sentiment on the Canadian left that is out growing any anti-immigration circles on the Canadian right.
I think Brian Topp is misunderstanding progressives anti-immigrant stance is not copying conservative policy, rather it is more of an organic movement within the progressive circles.
The Conservative province of Alberta has become the most pro-immigration province in Canada, so if progressives were copying the general mainstream conservative, it would be to be more pro immigration, not less.
Let's not forget, the fundamental issue why the people's party was created, was because the Conservative party was too pro-immigration. And yet, the People's Party is still doing terrible in the polls.
I'd be very surprised if the interest rate cut(s) total more than half a point in total for 2024. I can't see it helping the Liberals.
I am totally confused by what Ian had to say about Conservatives not expecting much and that they know they aren't going to get much from government. So why would we vote for them. What will get then besides our anger being stoked up?
NDP guy has given up on NDP and giving all kinds of credit to Trudeau
