    I really enjoy how you take the time to explain all that you do on every video. I have been able.to learn a great deal from your videos and I don't ever get borred watching you. Thank you for not playing music during your videos. Do you ever use any type of thickener for your dyes if so what do u recommend and could you do a video on how and why you would use a thicker dye and explain it possibly?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you and you are welcome.... I have been doing school events and home tie-dye parties for 16 years, I think that helped train me up to make these videos ...
      as for thickener.. I have used it before, here isa video showing how I mix it up : th-cam.com/video/imaTXWdNJTo/w-d-xo.html .... I found this Sodium Alginate on Dharma site and there is a link in the description box of the videos ... this is the one I use if I am going to do dye painting
      here is a quick method for mixing us some thick water for dye, I found this one on Amazon : th-cam.com/video/0s-7cOvM6tU/w-d-xo.html
      and I have tried the Super Clear from Dharma, it is a pre mixed thick water (not as thick as what you get from Sodium Alginate, but it works and you just need to mix dyes with it) :www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/superclear.html

    Yikes!!! So glad I found your videos. I have not worked since pandemic started, so I've been taking up new hobbies. Crochet, embroidery, needle punch, thiought I'd give tye-dye a shot. Think I'll be doing this for a bit. Now I'm off to get rubber bands and sponge brushes :-). Keep up the great work. Stay safe and healthy my friend.

    Would the designs that have a solid colour on the back and rainbow on the front work on a hoodie? Or would the fabric be too thick? Thank you so much for your videos, they are so educational!

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is possible, but you really have to work with your saturation to make sure you get it even .... but they way I have added black lines to my rainbow is to dye the whole thing top and bottom in the rainbow pie shapes and then use black dye over top of the rainbow on the top and bottom, I normally apply it with a foam brush so I do not get too much on .... it blends in with the colors some, but it does get a nice effect.... although you might try it on a tee or something first to make sure you like the look of it

    My brother gave me about 30 mens cotton undershirts, so I thought I'd give it a try.. Very new to tye dying & first ordered a tulip kit from Amazon. I thought the 3 i did came out ok, but knew I needed to do some youtube research. Found you & I must say your videos & tye dying are Grrreat! I have put in a order to Dharma for dyes & ash. I'm going to try all your designs. Question...When you show how it looks in 2 seconds, the colors look so vibrant & then you flash another picture where it almost doesn't look like the same shirt, colors look faded, does this happen to all tye dye? If I let it sit for like a week, will colors not fade so much?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, welcome to my channel.... and yes the colors always look much darker when the tee is still wet and not all of the excess, unbonded dyes have been removed ... that is just part of tie dye... never judge an outcome until it is washed and dry .... here is one reveal where the detail could not be seen until it was washed ... th-cam.com/video/hoVSFeWZx6I/w-d-xo.html
      and yes a longer batch time gives the dyes more time to bond with the cotton... I leave mine for 48 hours with heat, I am not sure if leaving longer than that will do much, but you can try, it will make wash out easier as the dyes will be spent so much less chance of back staining

    • @MrTieDye

      Soda ash is what activate the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash. Here is how I mix or make soda ash: th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html

      I leave my tie-dye tees to batch for a minimum of 24 hours, but I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours. This give the dyes more time to bond with the cotton fibers, which mean less dye is going to be washed away and the tees will be brighter in color. 70F is a nice temp to batch tees, I also like to add some heat during this time. So I batch my tees in tubs/bins with a lid. I stack them next to a heater vent in the winter and put them on the shed roof in the sun in the summer time. The heat helps speed the batch time, but I still leave mine for 48 hours. Here are the bins I batch in: th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html
      I batch my tees for a minimum of 24 hours, but I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours with some heat ... this allows more time for the dye to bond with the cotton, but also, by the time you start to rinse, most of the dyes are spent and cannot back stain ...... I start rinsing in cold water with the tee still tied, this rinses away the soda ash... then I turn water up to warm and continue to rinse as I remove the ties... once the water starts to run semi clear I will drop it into the washer which already has hot water and Synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap) added ..... after rinsing my white spots have a bit of color on them..... but the hot water wash will clean that up... but you gotta toss it in the washer right after you rinse it.
      and here is my rinsing/washing video .... th-cam.com/video/t0M_nstKkjM/w-d-xo.html
      I do a pre wash in hot water with a little bit of synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap) and then I soak in soda ash for 20 minutes ..... th-cam.com/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/w-d-xo.html
