Have seen a couple of quick videos from others, with just music, doing steps and showing results, which are great, but I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into making this detailed video, to teach all the extra tips. Thank you
I just wanted to tell you that my wife, who LOVES tie dye, was SO impressed with my first, ever tie dying, CUZ OF YOU! I decided to make her biz tees tie dye, I started with 3 or the 10 I bought and I followed all your steps. She was gasping when I revealed the final product after I rinsed them. So thanks so much for your step by step instruction. I'm looking forward to dying more of her shirts.
That is so wonderful to hear, thank you and you are welcome... I love to help other have success with this art and it sounds like your are and having fun doing it... keep up the great work!! 😉✌️🙏
This video was exactly what I was looking for. Having never tie dyed before I was looking for a one stop shop on how to get started and what supplies I would need and where to get them. The video quality is good and Mr Tie Dye is really engaging. I ended up making 70 memorial shirts for a celebration of life party, for an old Grateful Dead fan, and everyone loved them. Thanks Mr. Tie Dye, you're the best.
This video had so many good things to know. You answered some questions for me. Like Why Blue Dawn? Now I know...and it's a good thing to know. I'm a baby tie dyer and an old Deadhead. (50). I started tie dying recently while dealing with a health issue that keeps me lying down most of the time. I can do most of the work in stages when I am up. It's been the most therapeutic thing. It's has really made a huge difference in my life. Thank you for being one of my top teachers. Your instruction is allowing me to improve so fast that I'm really able to use my creativity to make things it would have taken so much longer to figure out on my own. I watched your Dark Side of the Moon video the other day and now I know about stitching. My mind was blown and now my brain is really buzzing with ideas. So all of this is just a really long way to sat Thanks so much for sharing your art and knowledge.
Thank you and you are welcome ... I love to help others with this art... 22 years ago when I started it was very secretive ... I wanted to change that, make it open to all who wanted to try it AND have success with it ... I am glad to hear it is helping you with life and with your creativity ... as for stitching... there is so much that you can do with it, here is an old album with a few projects in various states of completion to show a little more about Stitch Dyeing : facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4697029064004&type=3 ~ sorry about the order of the photos... Facebook made a mess out of them ✌🏻
@@MrTieDye Wow! That album is amazing! I can't wait to try it. I have done a bit of embroidery and I started learning to draw about a year ago. I try to draw everyday at least a little. So The stitching seems right up my ally. It will really great motivation to recover when I have surgery in a couple of weeks. In the mean time I'll just have to keep watching videos and planning future projects. Art is the best. 😁Sharing art is just magic.
I appreciate the detail and time you put into teaching us the steps on doing a tie-dye shirt. Seeing others give a learners course wasn't nothing like this. You really showed the ups and downs of doing good work.
Thank you and You are so welcome .... I used to do Tie-Dye School Events ... I had 25 kids standing in front of my table asking questions while trying to explain tie-dye to them ... I think that made making these videos a little easier ✌🏻
Carl, I'm a new subscriber here and have watched maybe a half dozen vids so far. You do incredible work, and I appreciate the time you take to explain and demonstrate your processes.Other vids are sometimes shot in speed mode and too hard for me to grasp the fine art of folding, etc. I'm new to tie dye at 67 YO and having fun with it. I've been stricken with stage 4 cancer for over 2 years now and find myself with a lot of idle time on my hands and this is a great way to occupy it and a type of therapy for me. It has also given my daughter and I quality time together. So thank you for that. I can imagine your classes are a big hit with the little people. So sending light, love, and peace back to you as well. Mark in Tacoma
Thank you for subscribing and you are welcome for the content ... I love to help others have fun and success with this art ... and yes it does not matter the age of the person... ALL can enjoy this art if you know how, so that is why I share my knowledge with the World ... I am glad this has been a therapy for you and a way to spend quality time with loved ones ✌️ ❤️ 🙏
Thank you for all your videos, but this one was exactly what I needed for ALL the info! I’ve watched about every video on TH-cam, but I always come back to your videos for details on what to use and videos on design folding and color designs.
You are welcome... I had been meaning to make a video like this for a while as I know there are many people new to tie-dye .... and thank you, I think doing school events for the last 16 years really set me up perfect to make these videos as I was used to sitting in front of a class full of grade school kids... I did tie-dye and explained what I was doing and why so they could fully understand the process
When I was a kid I used to tie dye-- one of those silly kits your parents buy you for a birthday party. I loved the process. THIS feels like the real deal. Didn't even know what soda ash was before this video! Seems like more supplies than I expected but the results seem oh so worth it. In a few paychecks I'll have some shopping to do! Thank you so much Mr. Tie Dye!
You are welcome and yes there is a little more involved than a kit, BUT, you are right, the results are so worth it ... have fun and ask questions if you need to and I or others will help where we can ✌️
My washer squirts out water during the spin cycle. I use a salad spinner for my spin out. This works great and I can save more of the soda ash. Thanks for all your videos. I have learned alot.
the salad spinners and other spinners work great for this... but one thing you can do/try if you want wanting to spin out more is to set the 'Spin Cycle' to halfway through the cycle ✌🏻
@@MrTieDye I am a complete beginner and going to start trying to learn tie-dye soon I have to get all my necessary dyes, etc. together first… Also, I heard you live in my town. I live in Philomath Oregon? You don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to LOL OK have a good day and thank you again.
The "spider" is one of my favorite design tricks. It really makes a great accent to many tie-dye patterns and color combinations. "Black backing" is another favorite and easy way to really accentuate things. I've learned a lot in the past 2 years from you and a few others. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion for this art.
Yes I love it too and I have even used peacock colors to make it look similar to a feather. I love to help other have success with this art, so you are welcome and I am glad to see so many others sharing their techniques as well .... I do have links to many on my Channels page 😉✌🏻
Thank you! I really appreciate the time you took to explain your thoughts on all the steps as you went through... I'm not a fan of over editted videos when someone is passing on their mastery of a subject... the gold is in the wrinkles of the thing... thanks man, and cheers :)
Oh my goodness, I’ve been mixing a new batch of soda ash together for every batch of shirts I do. Never knew I could re-use the mixture! Thank you SO much! 👏🏻👏🏻
Yes that will save you some time and supplies.... I used to mix mine in a 5 gal bucket and then pour it into gallon jugs to save and reuse .... ow I have a couple dedicated washers so it just stays in there and I run it back and forth and mix more as it runs low... glad to be of help, You are so welcome!
So glad I found your channel! My almost 5 year old is OBSESSED with all things tie dye and he loves to do his own tie dying. I’d never done it before so it’s been a lot of trial and error. This video was so helpful and I can’t wait to watch more of your videos and try new techniques.
I am glad to be of help... this art is just a bit tricky to get started, but once you know the basics, then it just comes down to practice and the Sky is the limit as to what you can do with it ... just in case you did not see it, here is the full Beginner's Playlist where I group some helpful videos together :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
I'm totally new to tie dying and I gotta say....I love your videos! you are a fountain of knowledge and more importantly the way you go into thorough explanation and step by step process it's just AMAZING!!!! I am a total fan. Keep rocking out those awesome tees! Many good wishes and love to you!
Thank you so much... I have been at this art for 20 years and so much of it has been spent experimenting as that was how I learned (not many people were sharing much about tie-dye back then) and I spent 16 years doing school events... I think this is what really set me up nicely to create these videos when I felt called to be of service... thanks again for your comment and you are welcome!!
I just sent a small gift via PayPal something I’ve never done before but your videos are really worth it… I also think that Dharma dyes should sponsor you, I’m sure I would never have found them if I hadn’t found your channel 1st…. And I’m sure I’m not the only one!
Wonderful! Good tips, cautions, sources, demonstrations, explanations, words of wisdom, etc. But I didn't get what you added to the final wash that produced a slight foam. Thanks a lot, enjoyed it.
Thank you and you are welcome ... and that was the soap I use to wash out the excess dyes that did not bond with the cotton fibers ... the soap is called Synthrapol ... is is a pH neutral soap so it is good for doing the wash outs after the dyes have set up ... a little background, the Procion Dyes I use require a high pH of 10.6 - 11.0 ... and that is achieved by soaking the cotton tee in soda ash before dyeing it ... then for the wash out, I use a neutral pH soap ... I do not want to re-activate the dyes as I am washing them out, or they could go back into the tee and do some 'back-staining' I buy my Synthrapol soap from Dharma where I buy my dyes, but there are other pH neutral soaps that dyers use for the wash out ... Blue Dawn Dish soap is one commonly used ... the other that I know of is Rolex Carpet Cleaner ... both are pH neutral so they will not re-activate the loose dyes in the washer
So many new ideas so little time , I have always wanted to learn to do this , that his beyond what my kids and co did when they were in school ! Not until I found you , Mr TD did I find such a good instructor ! Your videos answer every question and we easy to follow what you are saying and doing ! Thank you !
Wonderful, I am so glad to be of help to you.... I did Tie-Dye School Events and Home Parties for 16 years.... I think that is what trained me up to make these videos ... have fun creating!!
My kids and I just started watching your channel to prepare for our first time tie dyeing. It was loads of fun and thanks to your videos, our first time was lots of fun!
OMG u r the best!! I always have some questions when I watch others tie dye tutorials. So this video right here is very appreciated!! I'm so tunning in to ur channel more often! U ROCK 💯%!!!! ✌️🥰
Thank you so much and you are welcome... yes my goal is to help other learn this art and have fun and success with it .... I used to do school events and had 25 kids standing at my table asking questions as I explained how to do tie-dye ... I think 16 years of that trained me up good to create these videos ✌🏻💚🌈🥳🙏
You are the best teacher online- and so appreciated! I’m a grandmother- old hippie type. Wanted to tie dye for the grandkids and your step by step instructions are invaluable. What I’ve learned, I won’t forget because you gave the whys for each step, gave options for each for non professionals, and inspired everyone to be creative. Your designs are amazing! Your calm and joyful tone is comforting and your precise but simple execution is
Thank you so much!! 😊 🙏 I received my training for these videos by doing Tie-Dye School Events for 16 years... Thank you very much for your videos. Out of all of the tie dye vids I've watched, yours is by far the most informative and thorough. Much respect for all of your works! I'm a 65 year old hippie and love tie dye but it's expensive..but now I can make my own without making a bunch of mistakes..lol. I just wish I could have seen these videos about 40 years ago..lol 😉😅😎
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I have dabbled in tie dye in the past with mixed results and my daughter and I used your techniques and turned out some great shirts for the whole family!
Just getting into tie dying and I have had some hits and misses and complete fails. Thank you sooo much for making this video, I think these tips are going to help me so much.
you are welcome, I love helping people have success with this art, but it can be tricky to get started, so I try to lay out the basics and then offer as many tips and tricks as I can while I do my demos ... and this is just the first video in the list, so just in case you did not see it, here is my Beginner's Playlist :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
This is the best tutorial I've found to start understanding how to tie dye. I need to understand the process so I can help my grandsons dye some t-shirts when they visit this summer. Mr. Tie Dye, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It really is wonderful and your talent is amazing.

Thank you thank you thank you for this detailed explanation on the tie dye process. I have been tie dying for a little while now and I’m still learning and this has helped tremendously. I did do your vortex design before and it came out well. Your inspiration moves me brightly. ☮️
You are welcome, I am glad you are finding these videos helpful... I love this art and have been teaching it through school events and home parties for 16 years, so I think that set me up perfect to create these videos.... and YES, I love to Inspire people... thank you for your comment :-)
@MrTieDye I fell down the tie dye rabbit hole 2 days ago, watched a few videos and then found you. Thank you sooooo very much for your detailed instructions and explanation of the process. I never knew I wanted to try tie dyeing until your videos. 😊
Wonderful and welcome to my channel.... I am glad you found me .... and you are welcome... I love to help other have success with this art and I spent 16 years doing school events which is where I think my training came from to create these videos ... have fun with your creations!!
I have just been through all your answers to our many questions and see that you have told us what to do with a front loading washing machine. Many thanks I should have checked first.
Superb! Thanks for the great instruction, I did this to my 13th Floor Elevators after watching your FABBY video & it came out great!!! I will be watching more very soon Big love & flowers man from the U.K.😎👍
I am so glad I found your site. I love watching how they all come out so awesome. Thank you for showing us from start to end. I will be watching you again.
I love it when faces show up... any time you fold a tee in half before you scrunch or tie in some manner, you have the possibility of faces ... and yes each time I do different designs like this, each one turns out a little different... part of what I love about tie-dye
Thank you so much! I know how tedious instructional videos can be to make. Yours are very thorough and understandable. I’m going to have fun learning how to tie dye.
Hey man, I've been lurking on your channel for a couple of months now but I finally plucked up the courage to do my own tie dyes just this week, thabk your for your amazing dedication over the years
That is great to hear and you are welcome... I love to help others get started with this art or to help improve their art .... for me I just felt called to share my knowledge and it has been a wonderful journey for me .... have fun creating ✌🏻❤️🌈🙏
What an amazing video! I'm thinking about doing some type dying and what an great educational video to help me on my way! I feel like you've hit every question I possibly could have! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks of Tye Dye! I’m a beginner and I asked on a FB board who’s videos I needed to watch to learn the trade and they all said you. Hats off. So thanks again for taking the time to teach those of us that don’t know, a new trade. God Bless You.
You are quite welcome... my motto is "Be the change you wish to see in the World" ..... so 20 years ago when I was first learning h to tie-dye, it was a very secretive art and I wished there was someone I could learn from ... so here I am fulfilling that wish for others :-) Have fun and I wish you success!!
Well I must admit to facepalming more than once watching this thinking about what I've done in the past, particularly getting to the wash out part.... At least not all of my backstaining has been disastrous and I will know what I'm doing in future, thank you very much this is by far the best info I've seen on youtube.
yes I know what you mean, but we do not know what we don;t know until we know it LOL ... I love to learn new tricks, especially when it helps me over come a problem that i just dealt with, some for years until I found a new way or trick to do it differently... I am glad you have been inspired to try it anew ... thank you and you are welcome... I wish you success!!
You are so welcome ... and in case it helps, here is more info : Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk) I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore … I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process... Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it ..... This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉 Here is my Beginner's Playlist : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html ✌🏻❤️🌈🥳🙏 Here is a list with some more folds to try out : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2Bzupqjuh_6wdf-wMlgGdAjVaE.html Plus, there are many other tie-dye artists who share their techniques so others can learn, here is a list I have compiled that were mentioned in the tie-dye pages : th-cam.com/users/MrTieDyechannels Most Dyers use Procion Dyes, so just in case you are looking for sources for those, here are the main places to buy them from in the US : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com
Thank you so much for posting this - I am about to leap into tie-dying - and thank goodness I found your tutorial - I would have messed it up monumentally!! I am using a beginner kit - but cannot wait to be able to purchase different colour dyes.
I just love your personality! You are indeed Mr. TyeDye! Love your work! Thank you for sharing. I have learned so much by your videos. Thank you for sharing. I do have a question for now i have only the three primaries from dharma (lemon yellow, turquoise, and fuschia... also better black) i feel i have waisted so much dye trying to get my colors of the rainbow. Would you happen to have a ratio to mix the colors? I’ve looked through your videos, i may have overlooked. Thank you so much.. your such an inspiration
thank you, very kind words... I love what I do and I love to share so more people can have success with this art medium ..... I do not have mixing charts, I kind of just do it as needed..... but half and half is a good place to start and then adjust as needed... most times I will mix into liquid and then mix the colors and then I can test a drop on white paper towel to see the shade ...... I did make a video where I tie-dye a rainbow spiral with just primary colors and do the mixing right on the tee... it will be up in a few days, just need to edit it
Excellent video! I recenty started tie-dying, and there's a lot of information you provide that I didn't know before watching this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
I appreciate that!! I have always felt called to share my knowledge of tie-dye... I spent 16 years doing school events and tie-dye home parties and I think that trained me up perfect for these videos.... You are welcome, Have fun and I wish you success!! Be the Change you Wish to see in the World!!
Awesome... I wish you success and yeah the smaller tipped bottle are a game changer for tie-dyeing ... here are the ones I use .... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DB6K3XZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks so much for posting this video! It was very informative and extremely helpful!! You touched on some points I didn't know about...for instance, being able to reuse the soda ash! I, unfortunately, have been soaking my t-shirts in my sink with soda ash and when done, allowing it to go down the drain. This will be a BIG help, so I won't be wasting soda ash anymore. Thanks so much!!
Thank you for all your help I have dyed 3 small t shirts...and have a boo boo....I mixed the lady dye according to strict instructions...washed out the t shirts and soaked in the soad ash as per said....and then spun in machine....all came out ok in most parts but some places had spots of dye here and there not sure what I am doing wrong....front of the one looks so nice just did my own sort of turn but the back has got about 6 to 7 small dark spots
Ok so watched a good few of your videos now.....so I wonder if these dark spots on the t shirts are maybe not from leaving it in the plastic bag for 24 hours to cure or if it is from the dye particles ...I do mix in boiled water the dye .....and strain through a muslin cloth.....do you add fixative to your dye or after you have washed and rinsed....so now I am going to get a plastic container with lid and rack and cure like that and see if this is my problem..... of the spots all on the clothes or if it is the dye......also my dye is so light ...i think I must mix less water than what they say but not sure now...... thank you once again....
Yeah I would need to see the tee and the spots to try to help you, here is my launch links :launchlinks.io/u/MrTieDye ... in here there are links to either my IG or FB where you can send pics, or you can contact me through my store and from there I will answer back in email and then you can send me an image But, if you batched the tee in a bag and some of the dye settled in the bottom of the bag, that could be where your dark spots came from... you mentioned getting a rack and I think that will help.... or another possibility is to lay the tee on a clean dry towel for a couple minutes, this will allow some of the excess dyes to leach out into the towel, then when you bag it, the dye will not puddle in the bottom and when using Procion Dyes, the Soda ash that I pre soak my tees in is what activates the dyes and then time or heat or both will set the dyes ... but you do not have to soak first, just as long as the dye, cotton and soda ash are together before you batch, you are good, here is a video where I show the three processes with sod ash : th-cam.com/video/rkmAQxOu52A/w-d-xo.html and just in case you did not see it, here is my Beginner's Playlist with many more videos :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
Following your video tonight and very informative. Picked up a lot of helpful tips for a better tee shirt. See, a lot of what I can do improve my technique. Thanks for sharing. 🥰
Wow... I understand everything, you explain perfectly. Thank you so much. I do have questions. 1. What can you do if u don't have the big basin with metal rack? Is there another way of letting the t-shirts stay for 48hrs? 2. What if u don't have the washing machine? Can I just wash with a basin after removing all the soda ash? 3. At that process of washing, do I need to use friction method or squeezing and kneading method and for how long do I need to wash? That's all. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us♥️
Wonderful and you are welcome. I used to just have a table set up with a sheet of plastic, twice the size of the table, so I could cover the table, lay the dyed tees on it and then use the rest of the plastic to cover the tie-dye... this will help keep the tees wet while they batch because if they tees dry out, then the dye stops the bonding process ... and some people will put their tees into plastic bags to batch them.... the one thing you want to be careful of is puddling under the tie-dye if you use too much dye.... so if you do not have a rack, then what I would do is lay the dyed tee on a clean dry rag or towel for a couple minutes and this will soak up some of the extra dye before you put it in the bag or on the table as for washing without a machine, I have done this a few times with just a couple tees.... it is a matter of rinsing in cold water while the tee is still tied to remove the soda ash since it is what activates the dyes .... and then I rinse in warm water and remove the ties... I squeeze and rinse until the water starts to run clear, then I will fill a basin with hot water and Synthrapol Soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet Clean as they are both pH neutral as well) and then I soak the tee and change the water as it cools down, I do this until the water stay fairly clear... but you can use less soap the more times you do this as there will be less dye that come out ... once all of the un bonded dyes come out, then you can rinse and dry. To make this washing process easier and decrease your chances of back staining, I recommend a longer batch time, I leave mine for 48 hours with heat added ..... by the end of the 48 hours, the dye is mostly exhausted, so there is less chance of it back staining, so your wash out is easier. I hope this helps ✌🏻🙏
thank you and I am glad to be of help to you ... this art has been secret for many years and now is the time to shine the light so more people can have success :-)
Hi! I am very happy I came across your channel I kinda found it by accident haha! Its been years that I have done any tie dye shirts. This is perfect and a great place to start. Thank you for your knowledge I really appreciate it this is going to be a huge help!! You make AMAZING tie dye shirts wow. I think I will be binge watching your videos this weekend. Some of your shirts are mind blowing!!!
I am glad you found me and you are welcome.... I felt called to share my knowledge so that is what I do here... have fun and I wish you success in your creations!!
@@MrTieDye You do an incredible job I am impressed! I can only hope I can make something even close to what you do! Thank goodness you have plenty of videos to watch Im going to start out small lol I have been looking for a new hobby to do and I def found it!!!
MrTieDye they turned out GREAT! BUT.....I used a kit by Tulip, and they faded quiet a bit after washing.......would using a different kind of dye next time result in a more vibrant outcome?
Thank you for all of your tie dye videos. You are the best teacher I know for explaining how to tie dye. Lately I’ve had trouble with my tie dye bleeding after several washes. I pre soak with soda ash, let the product batch for 48 hours, rinse, then wash three times with synthropol. I’ve started adding color safe bleach. Most of the time it works, but some towels won’t stop bleeding. Do you have any suggestions?
Than k you and you are welcome... as for the towels that are still bleeding... they hold way more dye, so IMO, more soaking is needed to get all of the un-bonded dyes out of the towels... I would do a long HOT soak with some Synthrapol or Blue Dawn, or whatever you use for your wash outs... let it soak until the water is cold... then turn the washer on, spin out, then rinse cycle ... then test again to see if the dye still bleeds out
Really enjoyed your instructional video. You explain things so that, as a beginner, I fully understand. Thank you for that. I do have a question. I have hard water, do think that would be an issue for my work?
Thank you and you are welcome... I used to do School Events and I think working with kids really helped me create these videos ... as for the hard water, I have not had to deal with that myself, but I know it does affect the dyes at some level, but I am not sure... I am not sure at what level of hardness the water affect the dyes.... for the dyes that have really hard water, they use distilled water to mix their dyes.... so maybe try mixing with tap water and doing a test to see if it works
Thank you for all your fantastic tips!!! I don't know how many of us would have made it through the pandemic without something to occupy our time!! For me, it was learning Tie Dye from the best out there!! YOU!! I do have one question... Lets say you mix your dyes in a gallon jug and then pour them into squeeze bottles. And I mix my Acid Wash in a plastic jug as well... How long will the Dyes and Acid Wash be good for? A few days??? A few weeks??? A few months???
I am glad to be of help to you ... I love this art and love to see others have success with it. Thank you and you are welcome!! 🙏 As for your questions, first let me make sure, are you using Procion Dyes? if so, when I mix mine up and pour into squeeze bottles, they still produce decent colors for 2-3 weeks just left sitting at room temp, which here in Oregon is 60-70F ... the same dyes last much longer if stored in a fridge... I have a small one and keep it at around 43F and I have used dyes that were mixed 2-3 months ago and still get decent colors... not as strong as freshly mixed dyes mind you, but still good color As for your other question about 'Acid Wash' ... do you mean Soda Ash?? like what I use?? Or are you using a different kind of dye and wash?? I do not know about 'Acid Wash' ... BUT Soda Ash which raises the pH level of the cotton and activates the Procion Dyes ... I mix up the soda ash and use it until it is gone... when it gets low, I just make more and add it in with the rest One key note here.... Soda Ash is what activates the Procion Dyes... so if you mix soda ash in with your dyes, then they must be used right away... that is how most of the One Step Kits are.... they add the soda sh in with the powder dyes in the bottles... so as soon as you add water, the dyes are active and must be used within a couple hours.... so if someone is using a Tie-Dye Kit, then I recommend tying all of the tees before mixing the dyes I hope this answered your questions.... if you need to clarify or ask more, it is best to start a new question rather than respond here .... ✌🏻🙏❤️🌈🥳
Just discovered your channel as I begin my “tie dye journey”. You do a great job with your comprehensive explanations. Very simple to follow and lots of good info. Thanks!
Hi. I came across your videos and thus far they are the most informative (and your shirts looks SUPER BRIGHT). You said to prewash your shirts before starting and I have a few questions about that: 1. What temperature? 2. Use detergent? 3. Air dry or is it ok to place then in the dryer? If so, at what setting? 4. Where can I get the tie dye brand "DERMA" that you use? 5. How do I take care (wash) them once I have finished making them? You likely have answered these questions in this (or other) video, and I apologize if you did. I just wanted to ask before I forgot.
I prewash my tees in hot water with Synthrapol Soap, it is a pH neutral textile soap I bought from Dharma .... but many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral.... plus there are no additives like scents that may interfere with the dyeing process .... and then yes you can dry them in the dryer if you want, or you can just soak them in soda ash and then spin out the excess and you are ready to tie-dye them.... as for the Procion Dyes, I buy most of mine from Dharma, but here is a list of the dye houses in the US to buy them from : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com after they are dyed, I batch them for 48 hours to let the dyes bond with the cotton fibers and then I do my wash out with Synthrapol soap again, here is a video of how I do it : th-cam.com/video/t0M_nstKkjM/w-d-xo.html ... for me, I like to wash my tees a minimum of three times in hot water as this helps to loosen the unbounded dyes ... first one is quick, then next too are long soak cycles one more thing just in case you did not see it, here is my Beginner's Playlist :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
wonderful, I am glad to be of help and inspiration... have fun creating and yes I will be getting to a new video soon... but in the mean time check out some more of my videos... there are a ton of them and most are sorted into the playlists
Have you tried using sewer’s chalk for making marks on fabric? I’ve never had trouble with it staining cloth. Can be bought at a Jo Ann’s Fabric store or any place that sells fabric. Have enjoyed all of your lessons!
yes, I use it on black tees when I am doing just a simple fold ... but when I need to fold a line and then have it stay so I can dye it, I like the markers on white tees and for black I use Dry Erase Crayons ... Thank you for the tips and you are welcome for the lessons ✌🏻💚🙏
Hi I just wanted to thank you so much for your videos! I watched this video all the way through once and then followed along to it as I tie-dyed. I love the way my projects turned out!
You did a great job with the lesson. I learn so much, my brain is in over load. But that’s great for me. How long can you keep the dyes in the bottles?
Thank you ... as for the dyes, these are Procion Dyes and after they are mixed, I have had them around at room temp 65-70F here in Oregon) for a couple weeks and still got decent colors when I used them again ... BUT, if you have a mini fridge to store them in they will last for a couple months and still give decent colors ... Side Note .... some of the One Step Kits, there is dye and soda ash mixed together to avoid the pre soak, those dyes should be mixed right before you use them
Hi I haven't used reactive dyes yet and cannot wait. Your results and techniques are so amazing and inspiring. I have a question. I was wondering with regards to batching, because I don't have the setup yet, I was wondering whether one could zap the tee in a plastic bag or container in the microwave to somehow "heat set" it. would this work perhaps to speed up the reactive dyes bonding with the cotton!?! It has been suggested for other fabric projects and wondered how it would differ and whether it might damage the reaction with the risk of too high temperature!! What are your thoughts! Thanks again for your incredible world into tie dye.
I am glad you found my channel, I love to help others have fun and success with this art ... as for using a microwave, yes this can be done to speed the batch time... I have done it that way when I had a rush order ... One warning though, you should not use the same microwave as you use for cooking food .... also, you want to make sure there are no dry spots on your tee as they could heat up and leave scorch marks, or if left long enough, they can catch fire .... so if I was going to microwave a tee, I started with a damp tee and then tie and dye it, then I put it into a large ziplock bag and close it, then I set the microwave for 2 minutes and start.... BUT, I stayed right there and watch as the bag will fill with steam, as it gets full, I stop the microwave and wait till the bag deflates, then I start it up again .... it will take about 3 minutes to microwave it ... then I leave it in there to cool a bit, you do not want to pick up the bag while filled with steam as this can cause bad burns ... once it has cooled down some, then I take it out and you can start the next one... in the mean time, I let the tee sit till it was cool to the touch, then it can be rinsed and then washed out ... I have a video on my wash out process : th-cam.com/video/t0M_nstKkjM/w-d-xo.html With Procion Dyes the setting of the dyes requires time or heat or both ... there are other ways to apply the heat ... here is a video where I use a vegetable steam to speed my batch time : th-cam.com/video/1d8xAeQ-ZSk/w-d-xo.html another method a dyer developed is HWI (Hot Water Irrigation) this is where you apply your dyes and soda ash dry, and most times mixed together, then you use a sprayer to mist them with hot water, I did mine at around 200 degrees... I would boil water and then let it cool some ... I have only played with this technique a little bit and made a short video to show my process, I discharged a tee and then added some color back in using the HWI method : th-cam.com/video/Xnr0Gihup6w/w-d-xo.html .... for more info on this technique, I would look up the One Hour Tie-DYe page on FB ✌🏻 but for myself, I like the colors best after a long batch time with heat added ... so I batch for 48 hours in a tub, I set the tees on a rack so excess dyes can drip out, then I set these tubs out in the sun or stack near a heat vent : th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html and one more thing, just in case you have not seen it, here is my Beginners Playlist with this video that you commented on at the top : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
Have seen a couple of quick videos from others, with just music, doing steps and showing results, which are great, but I really appreciate the time and effort you have put into making this detailed video, to teach all the extra tips. Thank you
Thank you and you are welcome 🙏. Yes my goal is to teach people the basics of this art so they can explore it
I just wanted to tell you that my wife, who LOVES tie dye, was SO impressed with my first, ever tie dying, CUZ OF YOU!
@@MrTieDye you got this guy laid bro
Me too! Thank you so much!
@@simonemock1185 you are welcome :-)
The best beginner tutorial on TH-cam. I've been searching for a detailed video and this is the one Thanks Mr Tye Dye
You are very welcome, I am glad to be of help as I love to see other have success with this art 🙏❤️😉✌️
Best teacher ever! and not boring!
Thank you and you are welcome
When I was a kid I used to tie dye-- one of those silly kits your parents buy you for a birthday party. I loved the process.
THIS feels like the real deal. Didn't even know what soda ash was before this video! Seems like more supplies than I expected but the results seem oh so worth it. In a few paychecks I'll have some shopping to do! Thank you so much Mr. Tie Dye!
You are welcome and yes there is a little more involved than a kit, BUT, you are right, the results are so worth it ... have fun and ask questions if you need to and I or others will help where we can ✌️
I really appreciate how you're conscious of saving water, and products. Not to mention the beautiful results you achieve.
Thank you and you are welcome ✌🏻🙏
My washer squirts out water during the spin cycle. I use a salad spinner for my spin out. This works great and I can save more of the soda ash. Thanks for all your videos. I have learned alot.
the salad spinners and other spinners work great for this... but one thing you can do/try if you want wanting to spin out more is to set the 'Spin Cycle' to halfway through the cycle ✌🏻
That’s so kind of you to share your art and do it so thoroughly and caring! really appreciate it
You are welcome... I love to help others have fun and success with this art ✌️

And I’m sure I’m not the only one!
thank you so much, I Appreciate all of the support I receive ✌🏻❤️🙏
I do not want to re-activate the dyes as I am washing them out, or they could go back into the tee and do some 'back-staining'
I buy my Synthrapol soap from Dharma where I buy my dyes, but there are other pH neutral soaps that dyers use for the wash out ... Blue Dawn Dish soap is one commonly used ... the other that I know of is Rolex Carpet Cleaner ... both are pH neutral so they will not re-activate the loose dyes in the washer

Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye ....
I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk)
I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …
I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process...
This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉

Thank u very much for in detail explanation. its really good for a beginner like me
Glad it was helpful and you are welcome 🙏
Thank you so much for posting this - I am about to leap into tie-dying - and thank goodness I found your tutorial - I would have messed it up monumentally!! I am using a beginner kit - but cannot wait to be able to purchase different colour dyes.
you are welcome... I am glad you found my channel... have fun creating!!
@@MrTieDye Hi there - how difficult is it to tie-dye using hot water dyes? (If using more than one colour?)
That is wonderful, I am glad to provide helpful information, you are welcome, and thank you for your comment
Your videos are the bomb. I have learned so much from you. Thank you!
thank you and you are welcome
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much. I've done two batches now, using the information from your videos.
That is wonderful ... I am glad to be of help so you can have success. You are welcome.
Very informative video. Thank you for all the tips and such.
Thank you and you are welcome ✌️
I am thoroughly enjoying your videos! I appreciate the time you have invested to share your knowledge with everyone! Keep up the great work 🙌
I appreciate that!! I have always felt called to share my knowledge of tie-dye... I spent 16 years doing school events and tie-dye home parties and I think that trained me up perfect for these videos.... You are welcome, Have fun and I wish you success!!
Be the Change you Wish to see in the World!!
Thank you for this video. It was very informative, I learned some new tricks.
Glad it was helpful and you are welcome ✌🏻🙏
Made my first peace sign today. letting it set is the hardest part! I think I need smaller squirters! Your great!
Awesome... I wish you success and yeah the smaller tipped bottle are a game changer for tie-dyeing ... here are the ones I use .... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DB6K3XZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks so much for all your video's. I have learned so much from you. You are very detailed and make it seem easy. Thanks again!
You are so welcome and yeah that is from lots of practice 😉✌🏻🙏 ... have fun!!
First time watching from Trinidad thank You
You are so welcome... 🙏. I hope you have success with your creations!!
Spots if the dye is darker...not sure how to send you a picture...thank you so much for all your help God bless.
Yeah I would need to see the tee and the spots to try to help you, here is my launch links :launchlinks.io/u/MrTieDye ... in here there are links to either my IG or FB where you can send pics, or you can contact me through my store and from there I will answer back in email and then you can send me an image
But, if you batched the tee in a bag and some of the dye settled in the bottom of the bag, that could be where your dark spots came from... you mentioned getting a rack and I think that will help.... or another possibility is to lay the tee on a clean dry towel for a couple minutes, this will allow some of the excess dyes to leach out into the towel, then when you bag it, the dye will not puddle in the bottom
and when using Procion Dyes, the Soda ash that I pre soak my tees in is what activates the dyes and then time or heat or both will set the dyes ... but you do not have to soak first, just as long as the dye, cotton and soda ash are together before you batch, you are good, here is a video where I show the three processes with sod ash : th-cam.com/video/rkmAQxOu52A/w-d-xo.html

Nice job with great instructions😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Following your video tonight and very informative. Picked up a lot of helpful tips for a better tee shirt. See, a lot of what I can do improve my technique. Thanks for sharing. 🥰
Awesome, I am glad to be of help ... I love to share tips and tricks to help others have success with this art ... and you are welcome
I used to just have a table set up with a sheet of plastic, twice the size of the table, so I could cover the table, lay the dyed tees on it and then use the rest of the plastic to cover the tie-dye... this will help keep the tees wet while they batch because if they tees dry out, then the dye stops the bonding process ... and some people will put their tees into plastic bags to batch them.... the one thing you want to be careful of is puddling under the tie-dye if you use too much dye.... so if you do not have a rack, then what I would do is lay the dyed tee on a clean dry rag or towel for a couple minutes and this will soak up some of the extra dye before you put it in the bag or on the table
as for washing without a machine, I have done this a few times with just a couple tees.... it is a matter of rinsing in cold water while the tee is still tied to remove the soda ash since it is what activates the dyes .... and then I rinse in warm water and remove the ties...
Great video Mr tye dye. Very helpful, loved it. Thanks
thank you and I am glad to be of help to you ... this art has been secret for many years and now is the time to shine the light so more people can have success :-)
Very interesting, Bud. Beautifull design & color...waaaw...👍💖👍💖👍💖

@@MrTieDye You do an incredible job I am impressed! I can only hope I can make something even close to what you do! Thank goodness you have plenty of videos to watch Im going to start out small lol I have been looking for a new hobby to do and I def found it!!!
I just did my first tie dye project with my 7 yr old daughter today. It was fun! But you make it look sooo easy! I’ll let u know how it turns out!
wonderful and yes I do... that is my 20 years of practice showing.... but with practice, anyone can get good at this art and that is my goal :-)
MrTieDye they turned out GREAT! BUT.....I used a kit by Tulip, and they faded quiet a bit after washing.......would using a different kind of dye next time result in a more vibrant outcome?
Your videos are awesome! Going to make some shirts this week.
Wowza, thank you for taking the time to share your expertise!!
I would do a long HOT soak with some Synthrapol or Blue Dawn, or whatever you use for your wash outs... let it soak until the water is cold... then turn the washer on, spin out, then rinse cycle ... then test again to see if the dye still bleeds out
Thank you very much. I’ll try that.
Amazing spider design!!!!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Really enjoyed your instructional video.
Super video and very helpful!! Thanks!
thank you and you are welcome 🙏
As for your questions, first let me make sure, are you using Procion Dyes? if so, when I mix mine up and pour into squeeze bottles, they still produce decent colors for 2-3 weeks just left sitting at room temp, which here in Oregon is 60-70F ... the same dyes last much longer if stored in a fridge... I have a small one and keep it at around 43F and I have used dyes that were mixed 2-3 months ago and still get decent colors... not as strong as freshly mixed dyes mind you, but still good color
As for your other question about 'Acid Wash' ... do you mean Soda Ash?? like what I use?? Or are you using a different kind of dye and wash?? I do not know about 'Acid Wash' ... BUT Soda Ash which raises the pH level of the cotton and activates the Procion Dyes ... I mix up the soda ash and use it until it is gone... when it gets low, I just make more and add it in with the rest
One key note here.... Soda Ash is what activates the Procion Dyes... so if you mix soda ash in with your dyes, then they must be used right away... that is how most of the One Step Kits are.... they add the soda sh in with the powder dyes in the bottles... so as soon as you add water, the dyes are active and must be used within a couple hours.... so if someone is using a Tie-Dye Kit, then I recommend tying all of the tees before mixing the dyes
I hope this answered your questions.... if you need to clarify or ask more, it is best to start a new question rather than respond here .... ✌🏻🙏❤️🌈🥳
Just discovered your channel as I begin my “tie dye journey”. You do a great job with your comprehensive explanations. Very simple to follow and lots of good info. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you and you are welcome 🙏
You are extremely informative. Thank you
Thank you!! I am glad it was helpful for you ✌🏻🙏
Hi. I came across your videos and thus far they are the most informative (and your shirts looks SUPER BRIGHT). You said to prewash your shirts before starting and I have a few questions about that:
I prewash my tees in hot water with Synthrapol Soap, it is a pH neutral textile soap I bought from Dharma .... but many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral.... plus there are no additives like scents that may interfere with the dyeing process .... and then yes you can dry them in the dryer if you want, or you can just soak them in soda ash and then spin out the excess and you are ready to tie-dye them.... as for the Procion Dyes, I buy most of mine from Dharma, but here is a list of the dye houses in the US to buy them from :
CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html
CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/
CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com
NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/
MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/
MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com
after they are dyed, I batch them for 48 hours to let the dyes bond with the cotton fibers and then I do my wash out with Synthrapol soap again, here is a video of how I do it : th-cam.com/video/t0M_nstKkjM/w-d-xo.html ... for me, I like to wash my tees a minimum of three times in hot water as this helps to loosen the unbounded dyes ... first one is quick, then next too are long soak cycles

You are so welcome, I am glad t be of help... I love to see others have success with this art :-)
Thank you very much for sharing your skill with the world!
you are welcome
You did a great job with the lesson. I learn so much, my brain is in over load. But that’s great for me. How long can you keep the dyes in the bottles?
Thank you ... as for the dyes, these are Procion Dyes and after they are mixed, I have had them around at room temp 65-70F here in Oregon) for a couple weeks and still got decent colors when I used them again ... BUT, if you have a mini fridge to store them in they will last for a couple months and still give decent colors ...
Side Note .... some of the One Step Kits, there is dye and soda ash mixed together to avoid the pre soak, those dyes should be mixed right before you use them
Thank you so so so much! This has been incredibly helpful and appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge!
You are so welcome!

I have a video on my wash out process : th-cam.com/video/t0M_nstKkjM/w-d-xo.html
With Procion Dyes the setting of the dyes requires time or heat or both ... there are other ways to apply the heat ... here is a video where I use a vegetable steam to speed my batch time : th-cam.com/video/1d8xAeQ-ZSk/w-d-xo.html
another method a dyer developed is HWI (Hot Water Irrigation) this is where you apply your dyes and soda ash dry, and most times mixed together, then you use a sprayer to mist them with hot water, I did mine at around 200 degrees... I would boil water and then let it cool some ... I have only played with this technique a little bit and made a short video to show my process, I discharged a tee and then added some color back in using the HWI method : th-cam.com/video/Xnr0Gihup6w/w-d-xo.html .... for more info on this technique, I would look up the One Hour Tie-DYe page on FB ✌🏻
but for myself, I like the colors best after a long batch time with heat added ... so I batch for 48 hours in a tub, I set the tees on a rack so excess dyes can drip out, then I set these tubs out in the sun or stack near a heat vent : th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html
and one more thing, just in case you have not seen it, here is my Beginners Playlist with this video that you commented on at the top : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
