    I love this pattern and look forward to trying it! Question: Where did the purple lines on the white shirt come from after you tied it up? I didn’t see you mark the sections or did I miss a step? It looks like maybe you went back and drew your sections with a washable marker?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I drew those off camera just to mark out where to apply the dyes.... I love the washable markers.... just be aware that at random times, they do not always washout.... somI always work on the inside of the tee.... and if I have to draw on the front of the tee, I use the lighter colors of the markers

    Hello Mr Tie Dye, I love your vids and have been watching quite a few, can you tell me though why you don't need to add any salt to your dyes? All other mixtures seem to use it? Thanks

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with Procion Dyes, soda ash is what activates the dyes... salt can be used, but it is not required for the process .... what I have read is that salt can help 'push' the dyes out of the water and into the fabric when doing immersion dyeing ....
      but I do use it sometimes in colors like black or turquoise as it is supposed to help them some .... so if I do add it, I add it in when I am mixing my dyes.... I will use 1-2 tbsp for 16 oz of dye

    • @MrTieDye

      I do not, but two things come to mind ... Folex carpet cleaner may help ..... and when I get dye stains on a counter top, I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, just get it wet an scrub
      as for trying to over dye it with brown.... I do not suggest that as you will just end up with a different color stain

    What kind of dye do you use? I need to get some kite string. The rubber bands are harder to use. I dyed 3 shirts last night. Only one came out very good. It does take a lot of patience. Do you always wait for the color to show through on the under side, before you dye that side? Seems like a good idea. Thanks. You’re a great teacher.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use fiber reactive Procion dyes from dharma and I but kite string from Ace Hardware .... and yes lots of patience for the more detailed designs..... for the star Flower design, I tie it damp, then let it sit for a few days o dry out.... then yes, I Dye from the top only until I start to see each color show up on the bottom towards the outer part of the tee or tap where it is thicker..... so I add some dye and let it sit for 5-10 minutes then I add more... and just keep doing it until I see color on the bottom.... have fun and thank you 🙏

    • @Bonbon54220
      @Bonbon54220 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrTieDye Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to answer. Just curious... why do you let it dry out?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are welcome, and I let it dry out because liquid has a natural tendency to spread or wick through dry fabric, so since this has many layers, you want the dye to spread so you get better saturation .....
      if you dye it damp, then there is liquid from the soda ash that slows down the spread of dye ..... if I dye it damp, I will set tees with many layer like this one on a clean dry rag and it will help 'pull' the liquid down through the tee by soaking up soda ash that comes out of the bottom of the tee as you add liquid dye to the top of the tee ... I hope that made sense

    How would you do this on a dress ?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      for a dress I would use the second method in this video and put it down on the lower corner of the dress ... and you can decide if you want to do the whole dress, or have it go just part way... then you can tie off the star-flower and then scrunch of fold the top part of the dress .

      brianna campbell ..... that is a personal choice.... sometimes it will still dye fine if it is bunched up, .... are you doing with the tee still damp? That is how I the most stuff because it is easier to keep it flat, or have the creases stay in place as you wrap it up

    What is Soda Ash?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when working with fiber reactive procion dyes, the soda ash is what activates the dye and causes it to bond with the cotton fibers of the tee ... also, known as sodium carbonate ... it raises the pH level of the cotton. you can buy it here .... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/soda-ash-fixer.html
      it can also be found a pool supply places

      I have been using these dyes for 20 years and love the colors I get.... I have seen results from other dyes and they just do not perform the same way .... also, for brighter colors, I mix mine stronger than what dharma calls for, and I batch for 48 hours with heat instead of 24 hours as it give the dyes more time to bond

      OR, you can make it using baking soda.... here is a site that explains how to make soda ash from baking soda just in case you cannot find soda ash ..... www.pburch.net/dyeing/FAQ/bakingsoda.shtml

    Your videos are immensely helpful, however, I don’t know if it’s the angle/camera direction or what, but I just cannot for the life of me grasp where you’re folding from or what part of the shirt you’re grabbing. I honestly may just be completely stupid, but I’m beyond frustrated with my inability to comprehend what I’m seeing.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I apologize for that, sometimes I jump in too quickly thinking everyone is on board with where I am at ... to start with, I 'Centered' this tee, which means I folded it in half by tucking one sleeve into the other which then separates the front of the tee from the back of the tee : How I Center a Tee : th-cam.com/video/rjdJWIGdsVg/w-d-xo.html
      so, at the start of the video, the tee is already centered and I am picking up the front of the tee ... I hope seeing the video I post above helps you figure out what I did in this video ✌🏻
