@@ziggychic1 for me, mostly I dye the tees while they are damp... if I am doing a design the has many layers like a mandala, then I will tie it damp and then let it dry... this is so I can get better saturation i in the design as the dye will creep and spread through the dry fabric better than it will on damp fabric

Amazingly beautiful! You explained it so well! I am new to tie dye and dont even know a good brand of color to use, what do you use and recommend? I have some shirts I want to tie dye, maybe I should start on a sock? Lol

I use fiber reactive Procion Dyes ... the closest place to me is Dharma so that is where I buy most of my dyes .... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html they are in CA so west coast shipping is decent priced
and I have bought some from Custom Colours in NC and Grateful Dye in CO ... but the main thing is to get the Procion dyes and you will need Soda ash as well ... it is what acitvates the dyes and you can buy it from the dye house, or you can find it at a pool supply store ... the other name for it is Sodium Carbonate (not the same as Sodium Bi-Carbonate so be careful)
and you can start on a sock if you want, but I would go for a tee :-)

yes I have had that happen more than once... so usually I just guess and go for it... but to avoid that happening, I will make a list of what I need to tie, then I will go down the list one by one tying the up and stacking them in my tub, in the order they were tied... then when it is time to dye, I break out my list and go down the stack.
I have tried this method on shirts twice now and both times I've had the same problem- the only part of the inside 'legs' of the peace sign that show up is the junction right where they meet. I'm POSITIVE that I've put the dye in the right place, but it just ends up as a circle with a weird little triangle in the middle! What am I missing??

Mr. Tie Dye...I have my own channel...Tubular Tie Dye! I have been trying the peace sign out for over a week and ruined like 4 shirts trying this peace sign out. I cannot for the life of me figure it out! I don't know where I'm going wrong but all of them come out like X-Men logos ...Please Help!! Also, I would love to see you do a design of your choosing ..something that hasn't been done 500 times would be nice! Thanks for your videos and all the tutorials you have put up! I watch and follow them closely. Once I figure the design out I will change it and put a little bit of Abi flare on it. Idk if you were expecting a book but here it is....hahah. Thanks for the future videos you're gonna put out as well baby.
I am sorry to hear about the tees that did not turn out.... you can still do something with them,. whether you fold/tie them back up and add more colors to them ... like an Over Dye .... or tie them up and then discharge them and then add more color ... I have videos that show both of these
BUT, to try and help with the Peace Sign, here is a Live video, at the beginning of this video, I did a re-fold of a tie-dye tapestry I had made earlier ... sometimes seeing it already dyed and then re folded helps to figure out how it comes together : th-cam.com/video/72aOfffDR_M/w-d-xo.html
and you can re fold the 'X-Men' tees and see where you might have missed a fold compared to the peace sign

I have been at this for 20 years and have 10's of thousands of tees under my belt... although it doe not take that many to get good, but that is why I make it look so easy... have fun and just keep at it and you will get better and better.... oh and take pics of your work starting now as it is nice to look back and see your improvement over time

@@MrTieDye No worries! I have a lot of videos to watch to catch up! Question: Why do you turn the shirt inside out? Also, I forgot to buy my kite string today -- have you ever used dental floss? :-D I need to get brave and jump in and do this -- not just watch videos! Although I will say that I am pretty happy with my start -- color is so much fun! Two other question -- if you goof with using the washable marker, do you need to rewash before you use that blank? Also, what do you think of bleaching something if it doesn't come out the way you like? I have a handful of shirts I bought that I can't get more of and I really like the sleeves, so I want them to be GOOD!
a couple reasons to work on the inside of the tees... first off, I use a pencil when drawing my stitched designs and it does not always wash all the way out.
sometimes there are tiny spots where the dye did not dissolve all the way, so working from the inside, these spots will be on the inside, as well as any other tiny bits of dye that may get on a tee while moving it around
and it is easier for me to center a tee by using the seams on the tee
and now and then I have had sinew leave some marks behind.... so all of these things will be on the inside of the tee
and yes I have used dental floss, it works well also, but in the end, I think kite string will be less expensive because I use A LOT of it. and yes, getting out a couple tees and just doing it will really help move you forward ... I love to open a tee after it has been batched for 24-48 hours.. I call it Hippy Christmas
when using washable markers, if my line is a little off, I just draw over the mistakes with a different color so I do not lose track of my design, but if there are too many lines, then I will just re-soak in soda ash for 30 minutes and spin out again and most of the lines will be gone or faded, but no need to re wash.
as for bleaching, I do not recommend trying to remove all of the color with bleach, my personal opinion is that it would weaken the fibers too much.... I have not tried it et, but I am going to play with RIT color remover some and see if that will work..... BUT, I have done some reverse dyeing, where I take a black tee, or a dyed one and tie it up and then use a 50/50 bleach solution to remove color rather than add it to create a design... but I only leave on for maybe 10 minutes .... if I am going to soak for longer, then I use just a 10% bleach solution ..... AND it is important to neutralize the bleach when you are done.... I do this by rinsing in cold water and then soaking in a solution of peroxide and water, 1 cup peroxide to one gallon water and soak for 20 minutes, then I rinse and wash.
Another thing I do is over dye ... I will take a tee that did not turn out well or how I wanted, I soak in soda ash, spin out and then tie it up and add more color, or I will dye with black and this leaves a pattern of colors under the black... I will be doing a video on this soon.

@@MrTieDye That makes sense. Any other reasons? So...I just finished Day 2 of my tie-dye experience. I made four spiral pillow cases and two shirts. What did I learn between Day 1 and Day 2? Saturate the fabric with dye. Take your time when arranging the fabric as you want it. And using string to wrap is much harder than it looks! You make it look so easy! Oh, and one more thing -- don't get discouraged (so easy for me to do). I just kept thinking to myself: "Mr. Tie Dye didn't master the art of tie-dying overnight. It's gonna take some practice and lots of mistakes." And another thing: Be willing to forgive yourself for mistakes. That's also a hard one for me.

I played with many methods of folding and dyeing the Peace Sign.... finally it was help from Jeremy Strebel (back in the days of MySpace lol) that helped me learn this particular method of folding the Peace Sign...... then I practiced it a LOT and tweaked it a bit and now you have this video so ALL can make it if they choose to ✌🏻

I can't determine what I'm doing wrong. I've tried this twice, and both times ended up with a circle with 2 areas of the color I put on the tip of the shirt but no black lines inside the peace sign. I have black encircling the entire peace sign and I have black surrounding the two areas that I colored the tip(top of the shirt when it's folded). It also looks like It would be upside down. Both times it turned out exactly the same, and both times it was wrong so not sure. Love your videos though!

Hey Mr. Tie Dye, I've noticed that a lot of designs with quite a few folds are difficult to do when dying shirts in children's sizes... definitely this is one I haven't managed to do in a kid's size. Can you talk a bit about some designs that you think work best when you can't fit in a lot of tight folds?
small tee are definitely more difficult, but with practice they will get easier .... I have done peace sign on a onesie and it was quite difficult and did not look as nice as this one, but it was there ..... as for folds that work on small tees.... I would say any ones that are just folded in half, like the heart are easier... the peace sign has that area with 8 layers of fabric to fold and that is part of what makes it difficult on small tees

Eric Rose I did and I love it. Not a sheet but I bought a bunch of flour sack towels and they are amazing for practicing. Great size and like 10 for 7.50 at Walmart. In case you wanted to try it to see how you like it first.

you are welcome, I am glad to be of help to you... after the tee is dyed, then it needs to batch to give the dyes time to bond with the cotton fibers ... some people put their tees in a plastic bag, or cover them with plastic, I put mine in tubs on a rack with a lid.... this will keep the tees wet while they batch so the dyes can set up, it they dry out, then the batching stops ..... th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html
They need to sit for a minimum of 24 hours, but I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours and I add some heat by stacking these tubs next to a heater vent or I put them out in the sun

What if I want to make the peace sign smaller. Do I still make the 60 degree fold or change the line I tie with string?
Do it the folds all the same way, just make the partial circle smaller that I draw with the string ❤️✌🏻

How would you do this as a reverse die? I have a blue shirt that I would like to reverse die and do the same design
I would fold it up the same way, and the line that you initially fold along is the center line on the peace sign, then I tie an inch or so on either side of that line .... those two ties are where I put the black for the peace sign, so you can tie those two lines with sinew ..... then you will have black lines similar to this one I made and then you can dye the parts after you do a good rinse job on it
OR, the other way .... fold ups the same way as I do in the video, tie you lines and then in-between those two lines, wrap it with sinew and tie tightly, this will get you a solid peace sign ..... I will be getting back to my table soon and I will be doing some discharging, so maybe I will make a quick video of both of these processes .... have fun and I wish you success!! ❤️✌🏻🌈🙏

As for the VW logo, I do not have a video for it yet... I have done it in a couple ways so... I did it as a double dye, so I folded the circle and the 'V' shapes of the V and the upside down V in the W ... batched it and then soaked it again and then I folded and dye the / to complete the W .... here is a photo on my FB page so you can see what I mean (this was from 2009) ..... facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10216834468594334&set=a.10216834405192749&type=3&theater

and lastly, I do plan to try folding it again and I have heard other dyers mention folding the inner parts that are not the symbol, but I have not tried it yet ... I hope this helps you create the tee you want

When you’re folding shirts for ice dye or liquid. How damp or not at all damp do you fold them? My main issue is sometimes it’s impossible to do the sleeve tuck center fold perfectly due to the fabric stretching a bit while it’s damp. However, when I try to fold while it is dry or less damp. I find that accordion/pleat folding becomes difficult to do and hold in place. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thank you so much for providing so much great content
my preferred method is to soak in soda ash for 20 minutes and then spin out the excess so the tee is barely damp ... the main thing is to make sure the spin cycle does not spray water or it will dilute the soda ash, if yours doe, then try setting it to half way through the cycle.... and yes folding when slightly damp is easier as the folds tend to stay in pace better .... as for centering the tee, I did make a newer video to try and explain it better .... th-cam.com/video/ayXftSPBITo/w-d-xo.html

Mr. TieDye I really enjoy your videos. I have a problem I hope you can help me with. It does not matter how tightly I tie between sections of my projects, I always get lots of the dye creeping between sections. I notice that there does not seem to be any creep in your work. Is there a secret and will you please share it?
one thing that helps is to apply the dyes starting a bit back from your 'line' or space between sections as the dyes will spread some ... so I lay some dye down away for the line and keep applying dye to other areas, then I come back and touch up some if the dye did not spread enough... also the fine tip bottle help so you can apply smaller amounts of dye at a time, here are the bottles I use a lot :

One more thing, for my black, I thicken the dye so it does not spread much, so I use a cuticle pusher to 'press' it further into the folds of the tee .... BUT, you can thicken your dyes just a little bit to slow them down from spreading so fast, but this is something you will have to work out how much... you want the dyes to still saturate ... but if the other ideas do not fix your issue, then you might try adding just a bit of thickener

Mine turned out like a blob with no real distinct lines but I don’t have black dye, I tried some very dark blue but it all ran together, so Do i have to thicken all the dyes or just get some black dye and thicken that?
I just thicken the black dye that I use for the outline and then I press it into the tee with a cuticle pusher ..... but the out line is just my preference ... it doe not nee to be there... as for the dye all running together, .... you may need to apply less dye at a time and let it soak in some ad then add more as needed

Did you thicken the dye for this? I tried it for the first time with liquid dye but it all bled into each other immediately. Love your videos!
I used thick black dye for the outline, but the rest were regular dyes ... it does take some practice applying just the right amount of dye .... you might try getting the bottles with the fine tips so you can add smaller amounts of dye at a time... also, I will start applying the dye an inch or so away from the line to allow the dye to spread some on its own before it crosses the line.

I am DYING to do a giraffe head but sadly cannot find any tutorials...

I did not think so, but my most recent batch went bad on me.... it always has just a slight ammonia smell to it, but this batch sat longer ( not sure how long) and it had a really strong ammonia smell to it, but I used it any ways, then the next couple tees I did with the thick black dye from this batch did not come out very dark so I figured the thick water had gone bad.... I am going to start making smaller batches or store it in the fridge to make it last longer

Hi I have only been following you for a short while but I am constantly impressed with your skills. Can I ask is it essential to use thickened dye with this design and if I am unable to aquire the appropriate product would it be possible to use a thickener used for food
thank you and no thick dye is not required, the black in the only one I thickened here, it just gives a better outline ... but it does not have to be outlined.... AND yes I have heard of people using other stuff to thicken their dye, but I do not know what or how much was used .... so I say go for it and have fun!!

How damp do you leave your shirts? Does the damper the shirt make folding easy
I spin them out until they are just barely damp using the spin cycle on my washer... just make sure if it sprays water to set it to half way through the cycle as the water will dilute the soda ash.... and yes, in my opinion, it does make folding a bit easier, as the fabric stays together in pleats, scrunches or spirals when the tee or tapestry is slightly damp compared to dry ✌🏻

yes the thick dye keeps the line from spreading out.... but it also does not soak in very far, so I tend to poke the tip of the bottle down into the folds or I will use a metal tool to apply some pressure to the black line to help in soak in deeper

I’m hoping to do this design soon!! I use dharma dye, I just ordered it and it should be in tomorrow! After I mix it, how long can I keep it after I mix it? In the past when I’ve used regular dye from Walmart kits the dye got weaker and weaker the longer it sat. I just don’t want to waste my dye!
Wonderful and the Dharma dyes last for a while, I have mine around for 2-3 weeks at room temp after I mix them, I write a date on the bottle so I can keep track... and if you have a spare fridge to store them in they will last even longer..... but at the 3 week mark, if I still have dyes, I will add another scoop of powder and blend it again just to freshen it up.
And yeah the store bought kits, most of them are one step, which means the soda sh is mixed in with the dye powder, so as soon as you add water, the dyes become active and must be used with in a couple hours for maximum colors.... so I recommend people who use those to get all of the tees they want to dye all tied up before you mix the dyes and then plan on using them all inn the one dye session.
..... the other dyes I mention above are just the dye powders and I soak my tees in the soda ash... so then when you put the dyes on your tees, they come in contact with the soda ash and then start bonding with the cotton fibers ... anyways, have fun and ask questions here if needed... and if you subscribe to my channel and click the bell, then you will be notified when I put a new video up, OR when I go LIVE

Yeah I wish TH-cam would allow that ... but it sound like you just lost track of where the top of the tee was as you started folding it ... I am right handed, so I lay the tee down, folded in half with just the front of the tee pulled forward, with the neckline to my right, then I fold the bottom part up and then back down and then I fold the top part down ....
