      That is awesome! 👏 I am so glad you found my channel... have fun creating and just in case it helps :
      Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye ....
      I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. (Procion Dyes work on other natural fibers as well like : Bamboo, Hemp, Linen, Rayon, and even silk, but I use a slightly different process for silk)
      I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …

      I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process...
      Also, I have many videos on the basic folds and various ways of dyeing the cotton tees or tapestries ... Have fun exploring and I wish you success on your Tie-Dye Journey, Oh and I recommend taking photos of your work so you can look back and see how far you have come as this is an art that you will need to practice, but it pays off with getting better each time you do it .....
      This art can be quite addictive, you have been warned lol 😉

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you are welcome ... another thing that can cause weird white blotches is the sizing in tees... sometimes soaking in soda ash, the sizing will resist the soda sh and stay dry and then the dye will do the same thing, leaving a weird blotch, so pre washing is recommended for this as well ✌🏻

    Never needed soda ash for white clothing and my colors are more vibrant, don't bleed or fade, and remain in the finished product for the longevity of the item. I make sure the fabric is damp but almost dry after spinning it out. 1st one has beautiful colors but does not look like an actual spiral. I'm hoping the 2nd one of turquoise and bright green looks More like a spiral. Yes, definitely looks better than the 1st one. Perhaps once they are completely rinsed, dried, and washed, they will resemble more of the spiral.
    The Mandela tie dye you're wearing is my favorite after the low spiral you did the 2nd day after steam setting it.
    There's not a link to the soda ash brand you use and what it does for white clothing.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the soda ash is what activates the Procion Dyes I use and causes them to bond with the cotton fibers ... I buy mine locally from a pool supply store as Soda Ash, also known as Sodium Carbonate is also used to adjust the pH level of swimming pools and hot tubs .... in tie-dye, it raises the pH level of the cotton and then causes the dye to bond with the fibers ... then time and or heat will allow the dyes to bond with the cotton, this is why I set mine aside for 48 hours before washing them, allows more dye to bond, plus I add heat by stacking the tubs I batch in (th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html) near a heater vent, or out in the sun ... the heat and time really help set the colors up good
      As for some of these design not looking like spirals.... that is the point of this video series... tying one design, basically, and then dyeing in many different ways to get different designs.... I use to do Tie-Dye School Events and this helped me show more designs, but keep my time down so I could work with a whole class in an hour and give them lots of options to choose from
      just in case it helps , here is my Beginner's Playlist with lots of helpful tips and tricks to tie-dye :th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html

    Ur dye saturates so much easier and quicker then mine do. Mine its like the dye forms a lil bubble and rolls around before it actually soaks in the shirt. Any tips for me?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use Procion Dyes and most times I dye the tee when they are barely damp .... the slight wetness helps the dyes soak right in rather than roll off.... I recommend you lightly spray the tee with some soda ash if your tees are completely dry when you dye them .... if this is not the case, then ask another question and let me know what kind of dyes you are using or explain your procedure some, rather than reply to this one as I will see it quicker than a reply

If I recall correctly, it was purple, fuschia, pink, and maybe maroon, and black and grey. The colors had blended so perfectly. I'm just not sure at all how it was dyed. It didn't have nautilus lines, but DNA. The pink lines were relatively thin. Any tips or ideas would be amazing!

    Hi Mr Tie Dye - please can you tell me why I got huge hard lumps in my squeezie bottle, after adding water to the dye/soda ash/ salt mixture. I put the salt in first (big granule kosher salt) then the soda ash and finally the dye powder - gave them a little swirl to mix the dry stuff, then added fairly warm/hot water and shook well. I noticed the salt did not dissolve all that well - and the problem seemed to be with the Orange and the Golden Yellow. Orange had a big marble sized ball left in it, and the yellow clogged up the spout. What did I do wrong? Please help!! Thank you - I am somewhat of a novice............

    So you keep the shirts inside out ?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do until after I wash them.... mostly it is habit from when I use washable markers a lot, they leave a tiny mark every now and then... the other reason is the tiny spots that can come from speck of dye that do not dissolve all the way... if your tee is inside out, then the spots are on the inside of the tee, or mostly ... but it is not required in anyway to have the tees inside out... just personal preference ✌🏻😉

    Ok, I’ve attempted a few spirals now and I’m getting good, vibrant colors, but, I can’t seem to achieve satisfactory saturation. There is significant white patches. I feel like I’m squirting huge amounts of dye on these shirts (way more than you, sir). I’m soaking 20-30 min in soda ash. It’s mildly frustrating.

      See what he’s doing starting at about 28:00 … you have to peek inside the pleats and add more dye if necessary.

      I am not sure if you mis heard me ... at that time stamp I said I was going to put this in my vegetable steamer for 30 minutes, then batch. BUT, if you were just stopping the video at a good point to ask about that green ... that is my Bright Green, I make it by mixing 3 parts Lemon Yellow and 1 part Turquoise ... more yellow will brighten the green and more turq will darken it, so you can adjust it to where you like it and you can mix it from liquid dyes, or make it fresh from powder dye

    Just wondering Carl can use Rit Dyes and also can you speed up the dying time by using the Microwave, lol Thanks so much, love your show, you are the master, from Brenda, From Olean, NY, 60 miles south of Buffalo, 20 miles from the PA boarder, in the Heart of the Enchanted Mountains, lol, that's what it says on the road sign, there are Mountains all around the city., population 15,000, use to be 20 but it is the biggest town around for 50 miles on all sides, it's beautiful here in spring, summer, fall, winter(cold and long), still pretty tho, Work here, a big thumbs down, Employers really expect you to kiss butt for a minimum wage job, so I'd like to start a tie-dying business, my Mom is/was a great artist, I have her paintings on my walls, but I really didn't inherirate her talent except for her strong will, I don't quit, I get fired, lol, but I'm trying. PEACE

      Probably wondering why did I get fired? The Employer Dave who owns a fleet of Buses and Limo'a for 30 years, had to personally inform me and just for the last 3 years been doing medical travel which I was hired for, told him I know the roads, had my license for 48 years, just turned 65 and on SSD, my Husband Merle from PA was a Professional Fundraiser and we traveled from Colorado Springs to Il, WI, OH, NJ, Albany, Schnedecy, Lake George, Watertown, Ogdensburg, and the next county over for the Allegany County Cops, I drove a 22 ft RV in which we lived and I collected 90 % of the funds, also drove a 1-ton Pick-Up pulling a 47 ft. Travel Trailer with a pop-out living room, very heavy in the front, very stressful, my husband didn't know the first thing about hooking it upright, so I couldn't get the thing past 40 mph, he was also a mean drunk but was the best at getting people to buy Ad's in the Cops yearbook, he wouldn't get off the phone till he sold a 1000 bucks a day, which I was sent to collect and wasn't on the payroll, he died in 94 broke at his mother's trailer in Hinsdale which use to be mine. his whole families were crooks and liars. Anyway, this guy hires me on Aug. 12, 21, the anniversary of my beloved beautiful sister Darcy's death in a car accident and he fires me on Sept. 8, 21 because, I think it was an honest mistake and kind of funny, they, he and secretary Tina sent me to this little town 30 miles away, Cuba, NY (Cuba Cheese} to pick up a girl to take to S Union in Olean, anyway there was 2 of them going to S Union, didn't know that, had the wrong girl in the car, Tina calls me on cell says the girl is looking for me, I said what do you mean she's in the car, but it wasn't Sandra, it was Brianna, took her back, picked up Sandra and took her to S Union, no big deal right, well Dave and Tina thought it was, kept calling and yelling about it in front of Brianna, I said I was sorry, he says your gonna be sorry, wow, this guy is so concerned with making money, I'm concerned with the condition of the cars, the tires especially, every day I'd check the tires and they were always off. aright that's enough, he's just a bully, in all these years working, I've never had a boss who is as abusive as him and I'm the one who didn't get paid for 4 weeks, somebody changed my pay rate on my check from 12 50 to 0, and he's complaining and yelling at me for coming in 15 minutes early and for checking the oil, everything I did was wrong and they gave me no training, one day and they decided to cut me 5 hours and acted like they weren't going to pay me 2 and half hours before he rudely called me in the office and said I was indefinitely laid off, lol, good I don't want to work for people like that anyway, besides winter's coming and there's a lot of hills and back secondary roads to drive on, The End, oh I walked in yesterday with a notarized affidavit stating if I'm not paid $93.75 by Sept. 27 further action will be taken, how do you like me know, I have a medical secretary degree and I know how business wor.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      after dyeing it, I put the tee in a vegetable steamer for 30 minutes... the heat helps set the dyes dyes faster ... here is a video of the process : th-cam.com/video/1d8xAeQ-ZSk/w-d-xo.html
