    This is one of my favorites. I am having a really hard time making myself cover the colors with black. It seems like you put dye on it forEVER and then even more with the black. This shirt is soooooooooooooo beautiful! I love colors with black.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I know it does look like it is going to be ruined when I pour the black over all of those pretty colors.... but I love how it comes out... but that is purely an option, you can dye these in many ways and get different results without adding black over top of the colors .... thank you and you are welcome

    I love the Goddess symbol tie-dye you are wearing! Truly amazing! So many great tutorials! Am I cheap?LOL!
    I feel like the dye is so expensive at 40 dollars lbs. It is a 200 dollar investment to get started..as an artist, I know once I dive into doing this I am gonna want to experiment.. maybe I will start with the three colors blue red and yellow and then black? Do you prefer Custom, Grateful or Dharma? I joined your channel and look forward to binge-watching your videos! Much love and many blessings!

    • @BLKMGK4
      @BLKMGK4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the three dyes interchangeably, Dharma has the advantage of larger stock and variety but their shipping is rough if you aren't West coast. Buy things like soda ash locally at home improvement stores and t-shirts from bulk places that don't charge shipping to save. Buy the Dharma color poster too so you can label the lids with the swatches. 1lb is a lot of dye starting out, 2oz is maybe good for a small sample, but 8oz is where you can get a decent number of dyes with a color. Once you know what you like move to 1lb jars :)

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh thank you... that was the design i came up with for the 2017 Eclipse tees and I love that it is the Symbol of the goddess as well :-)
      and yes it can be a little spend to get started with tie dye if you want the good dyes... I recommend starting with the primary colors and one black... so they would be Turquoise, Fuchsia and Lemon Yellow in tie-dye .....as for where, I buy mostly from Dharma, I bought from them when I first started 20 years ago and have just stayed with them as I am on the West Coast so shipping is fast for me ... I have bought some dyes from Custom Colors and Grateful dyes and they worked great as well... Procion MX dyes are what you want to look for .... you can mix your primary colors to get your secondary colors and then over time, just add more colors to your palette ... thank you for subscribing to my channel, have fun binge-watching

    Hi Carl. Have you always batched for 48 hours? I notice others on TH-cam batch for 24. I have done both but notice little if any difference. I'd have to do a controlled experiment with identical dye mixes to tell, I suppose. lastly, when you ice dye, would you say you use twice the amount of product? TIA. Appreciate your willingness to respond as always. Going to look you up on F/B to see what you have going there, too. Peace, love, light, and laughter to you as well.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey Mark 👋 ... I used to batch for 24 hours, but in my efforts to get more out of my dyes (meaning brighter colors or darker blacks) I read some and heard from other dyers about heat and time when it comes to the dyes bonding.... so I started leaving my tees, especially the ones with black on them to batch for longer and I noticed a bit more darkness in my blacks and then from there I just decided to batch mine for 48 hours and I also add heat... I stack the tubs near a heater vent in the winter and I set the tubs out in the sun during the summer months ...
      BUT, 24 hours is certainly a long enough batch time
      as for the Ice Dyeing... I have not done it enough to really know for sure if I use more or less of the dye powder than I do when I liquid dye... it seems like more, but that could be the trade off for the effects you can get from ice dyeing, including the incline ice dye, as well as good saturation for some of the tie I do... I have liquid dyed geodes, bur I prefer the look of ice dye with them ... Thank you and you are welcome 🙏 ✌️

    I love the large green shirt at the end, both color and design. I don't understand how you used the fan folding technique that you demonstrated in the early part of the video. Did you simply go up (or down) the shirt fan folding back and forth as you went up the shirt?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you and yeah this is a bit of a complicated fold... I draw the lines on just to give me a guide line to follow... then I raise that line and and sort of fan fold it back and forth as I gather up more of the fabric to incorporate into the fan folds making them quite full of fabric.... but I try to keep it all at the one lay( double layer since it is folded in half) ..... and there will be another Quantum video coming soon and the Quantum V Spider tee that I have worn in a couple videos so stay tuned

    • @richhowell6874
      @richhowell6874 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrTieDye I did a fold like you showed in the video and used the greens and yellows of the one that I like so much. It actually came out pretty good, but without the necessary penetration to be truly "great." I'll do another tomorrow and use more dye and maybe another color or two, like you did on the back side. Thank you so much for the effort you put into teaching all of us your art.

      so this design was a combo of folding and some stitching .... I folded the tee in half, drew half the design on and then stitched the sliver of the sun and folded the circle part, then scrunched the rest up as evenly as I could so when I dyed it, I could get the rainbow in there also

  • @loristeward9827
    @loristeward9827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Could you go ahead and apply the dye right after you tie it up without the couple days drying?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can try it that way, but the reason I let this one dry some is I tie it tightly and it is kind of thick... so being dry help with the saturation in the middle of the folds .... BUT, you can certainly try going right to the dyeing, but if you end up with too much white, then I would let it dry the next time ✌🏻

      thank you ... I use warm water to mix reds,, yellows and oranges dyes and that seems to help .... also, if there is a bunch of un dissolved dye in the bottom of the cup, I pour most of the fresh dye out, add more water and blend some more to dissolve the rest .... sometimes you can only dissolve so much dye in a certain amount of water, Urea helps to dissolve more dye also.... but the main thing is you want to dissolve as much of the dye as possible or your colors may not be true colors they are supposed to be

    I love LOVE this design and have tried to do this twice now, with limited success. The outcomes are cool enough (not as good, but cool), but I have one vexing issue because I am a novice: how do I get the shirt positioned so I at least have the purples coming on the sides and the greens at the top and bottom? Is there a way to accomplish that on purpose?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lisa Cox .... that is wonderful.... as for the coloring... what I do is use washable markers in different colors to draw some extra lines for color placement so after it is tied, I know where the top and sides are so I can dye in the right places

    Just fell in love with tie dying and am VERY new. Discovered you on TH-cam and love your instruction. My question is...when you use colors other than primary like green and purple, are you mixing them yourself using the primaries? Also, if you are mixing to make your own colors do you mix once they are liquid or do you mix them in powder form. Ex... fuschia(mixed to liquid form) with turquoise ( liquid form) or 1 tsp fuschia powder to 1 tsp turquoise powder?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is awesome... welcome to the wonderful world of Tie-Dye!! ... I have been here 19 years and still loving it and I love helping people get started or improve their art.
      So I buy most of the colors I use .... for Orange I like Deep Orange from dharma, favorite green right now is Emerald green and I like Plum for my purple .......
      I have many tubs of various colors, BUT, I also like to mix some of my own shades... like for my gold color, I mix the powders, I start with lemon yellow and added a bit of orange and then I think I adjusted it some with daffadil .... I just put them in one of my extra dye jars, put the lid on and shake, then let the dust settle and I then mix the liquid dye from that. ........
      but I also will mix some of the liquid dyes together if I need something quickly... I can adjust a shade of a color... for example, if I want to make Lime green, I will start with mostly lemon yellow dye in a bottle, then add a little bit of turq., shake and then put a drop on a white paper towel so I have an idea of what it looks like, then I can add more turq to darken the green, or more yellow if I want to make it brighter .
      so really there are no rules on how to mix the dyes and whether you buy secondary colors or not is up to you ... some dyers prefer their own colors and other like to buy every color they need.... I am in the middle, I have a large rack of dye powders, but like to mix some also... I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

      @@barrybadger7816 You are welcome and yes, I have not used Tulip dyes, but from what I have heard from other dyers is there is soda ash mixed in with the dye powders, so as soon as you add water, they dyes are active... so it is best to mix just before you are ready to apply them to the tee, this is the way you will get the best colors out of those dyes..... but if you want even better colors, try getting some Procion dyes... they can be mixed and will last for a couple weeks, even longer if you store in the fridge... hope this helps

    I want to tie-dye a shirt where the lace are most of both sleeves (3/4 sleeves) and a lace pleat in the back. I want to keep the lace white and Tie-dye the rest of the shirt, but how can I keep the dye from getting on the lace and staying white? I have tried the Tulip "resist" for dye but it didn't work, I've also tried a little wax (hard to get out of material) and even tried vasoline (not as hard as the wax, but still hard and messy to get out of material). Does anyone know how to do this? I don't can't seem to find any information about it. Thank you. vmoon

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would just do a pleated fold next to the lace and tie it off, then fold and tie the rest of the tee how you want it... when you are ready to dye the tee, I would wet the lace part and then wrap it in plastic bag and band it... this will help discourage dye from wicking into those areas... also, when you dye next to the lace area, leave a white gap so when they dye does spread, it has some area to spread in before it get to the lace..... and when you batch it, I would prop those areas up a bit

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      some people have used Washing Soda ... just make sure it says soda ash or Sodium Carbonate on the package
      Other people make their own soda ash by heating baking soda, here is a comment someone left here yesterday about how they do it ..... All you have to do is spread regular baking soda on a cookie sheet and bake it at 400 degrees for 30 min. I stir it around after 15 min of baking, then let it go another 15 min. I also get the baking soda from the bulk food section for .59 cents a pound, pretty cheap soda ash. ...... I have not done this myself though ..... I recently found soda ash at the pool supply store, so I no longer buy it from dharma and pay shipping
