@@MrTieDye Thank you so much I just watched the dye over video guess what I’ll be doing today I have quite a few I can dye over thank you so much for all of your help✌️
Thank you for using the proses that allows your viewers to see the results almost immediately. Your viewers thank you! And beautiful work you do. Do a blue one with 3 shades of blue and a red, orange yellow! Like blue fire and red 🔥🔥 I’m sure you did that already. But again thanks I enjoyed your video! ❤️ can’t wait to try. Oh and what is soda ash and where do I buy it?
You are so welcome and yes I think when doing several tee, showing the results after each one works great for the viewer .... as for soda ash ... it is also called Sodium Carbonate ... it is a chemical used to raise the pH... this is what activate the Procion Dyes and cause them to bond with the cotton fibers ... you can buy it where you buy your dye, OR you can get it from a Pool Supply Store, just make sure it is soda ash as they sell other chemical as well (Sodium Bicarbonate is not the same) ... here is my Beginner's Playlist which has many tips and tricks to tie-dye as well as a video on how I mix OR Make soda ash : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
Love your videos!!! My wife got me a kit for Christmas and I'm hooked! Got alot of friends in the jam band scene that make dyes. I'm hooked and so glad I found your channel!! So much fun!
I love tie dying a lot but can only do the simple things! I’ll have to watch your vids again to see how you do thing! Will you be doing any Christmas tie dye?
are you talking about the 4th tee in this video, the one I call Pie Dye?? if so, then to make sure you get the color you want in the middle, I suggest using a washable marker to mark where you want a certain color, then when you tie it up, make sure the color mark is visible and then dye accordingly ... I hope this answers your question, if not, then please ask a new one rather than reply as I do not get notified of replies ✌🏻
Thank you very much Carl! You are the best ;-) I also really like a lots the T shirt that you are wearing on the video! Did you make a video for it? How is it call?

@mrtiedye can you do a video on dip dyeing? specially in hot water.. i want to know what are the pros of both the methods.. with normal temperature water and hot water. Thank you so much in advance!
You should try the 2 color one like you did with the yellow and turquoise but just put turquoise on one side. I would try but some how I can't ever get the spider to show up and my ts just come out like a regular spiral
yeah that was a game changer... I do not do as much dyeing as I used to, but string in the fridge gives the dye longer life.... not as bright as fresh mixed, but nice to have it around when I want to dye spur of the moment ✌🏻😉
I loved the variety of patterns resulting from the various ways of applying the die! Amazing! I just ordered my first ever batch of dyes from Dharma! I'm excited! Now for the waiting game. :( Maybe they'll get here quickly and surprise me!
I heard you say that you soaked them in soda ash AFTER you tied them? I though you soaked them in soda ash just before the process of designing and tying??? I'm a beginner that will be starting after Christmas. I've watched a lot of your videos and really thankful for them. ❤ Update: Just watched the whole thing. All great. Love the ones with pink and the last "wild" one.
Hello and welcome Susies ✌🏻 the soda ash can be use at various times, the main thing is to use it before you batch the tees ... so yes, my most common method has been to do a pre wash on the tees... and then I soak in soda ash for 20 minutes and spin out the excess ... then I fold and dye the tee while it is barely damp with soda ash ... BUT, you can also pre wash and then tie the tees while damp and then soak the tee in soda ash ... for this method, you need to be able to squeeze out the excess soda as without messing up your fold... so I tend to use my washer to spin out the excess as I can lean the tees (if they are tied up in a spiral, scrunch or spider as these designs are harder to squeeze without messing up the design) against the basin and once the spinning starts, they are flat against the walls of the washer AND, one other way, which I have been exploring more with, is to tie and dye while they are just barely damp from the prewash... then at the end, I add a coat of soda ash over the top, then flip and add a coat to the bottom while it sits on the rack in my bin... this way excess soda ash or dye can drip out ... I show the bins I use in this video on how I batch my tees : th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html AND, here is a video where I demo this process with three tees : th-cam.com/video/rkmAQxOu52A/w-d-xo.html and here is a little more info on what Soda Ash/Sodium Carbonate does : soda ash ash raises the pH level of the cotton (or other natural fibers like bamboo, hemp or linen) fibers and then when the dyes come in contact with them, the high pH level causes a chemical reaction in the dyes and causes them to form a permanent bond with the cotton fibers of the tee ... then you need time or heat to form the bond... I like to use both so I batch my tees for 48 hours with heat added.... but 24 hours at 70F is a good time as well and since you said you were new, here is more info that I post for new people, you may have already seen some of this, but just isn case : Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye .... I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes. oh Carl ! wonderful different spider video. i am really intrigued with the pour dye. could you tell me how much dye powder to the one half cup water. or did i miss it? never got around to tell you how excited i was that you and Julie married !
Thank you ... and it is just regular mixed dye, the same as I would use in any of my other tie-dye videos, just poured from a cup instead of squeezed from a bottle .... so I use 5-6 tsp of dye powder to make 16 oz of dye and thank you.... we have been together for 10 years and decided it was time to get married ❤️🌈✌🏻🙏

I'm new to the dye and I've only been letting mine batch for 24 hours plus I haven't been using soda ash. Should I be using the soda ash and letting my products batch longer? One of them is a kit and it said only 6-8 hours but I did 24 hours. Gonna try this design plus the way you fold yours. Great designs
24 hours is a good batch time, I leave mine for 48 hours just to give more of the dye time to bond with the cotton fibers .... as for Soda Ash, the One Step Kits usually have soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so as soon as you add water to the bottles, the dye is active.... so to get better colors from the kits, I recommend doing a pre wash on the tees and then getting all of your tees folded and tied up and all ready to dye, then mix the dyes and use right away for the best colors BUT, one more thing you could do to improve the colors from the kits even more is to buy some soda ash (Also known as Sodium Carbonate, I buy mine locally at a Pool Supply Company as they use the same chemicals to adjust the pH of pools and hot tubs) and do a pre soak on your tees and then wring out the excess.... I use my washer to 'Spin' out the excess soda ash (Just make sure that your washer does not spray water during the spin cycle, if it does, try setting it to halfway through the cycle, as excess water on the tee will dilute the soda ash) so the tee is barely damp when I fold and dye it Just in case you have not seen it, here is my Beginner's Playlist with lots of helpful tips and tricks to getting started with tie-dye and using Procion Dyes : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html
part of keeping the white spots is batching for long enough... the soda ash is what activates the Procion dyes.... I batch my tees for 48 hours with heat added by stacking my tubs next to a heat vent (a good batch time is 24 hours with a temp of 70F) ... by the time I am done batching with heat, most of the dyes are exhausted, so there is less chance that they will back stain the white areas of the tee in the wash, the other thing I do is start with a cold water rinse in the sink while the tee is still tied, this will rinse away the soda ash ..... and lastly, I use Synthrapol soap in the washes, it helps to keep the dyes suspended in the water... some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they to are pH neutral ... when doing the initial washout, you do not want to reactivate the dyes you rinsed away and some detergents have soda ash in them... so it is best to stick with a pH neutral soap for the initial wash out... I do 3 hot water washes on my tees minimum.... first one is a short cycle and then two long soak cycles ... all in hot water, the first load I use more soap since there is more un bonded dyes... then the next two washes I use less soap... just enough so there are a tiny bit of suds on top of the water (BUT, not a full on bubble bath) ..... here is my Beginner's Playlist with lots of helpful tips and tricks to tie-dye and the 9th video shows my wash out process the I have described here : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html

What colors would you recommend using to use under a black light? As for the spider design. I like putting one on the top and one on the bottom of the tshirt or putting one on the top and one on the side under the armpit. Which makes 3 on the shirt. Oh and how do you keep your bottles from leaking? I bought quite a few from Dharma and they all leak on the lid. I noticed these didn't have the little gaskets like the other bottles I have.
for Black Light, to start, I recommend leaving some white in the tee as it will glow the best .... next would be bright colors ... they glow the best under black light ... so like Lemon Yellow, Turquoise and other lighter shades as for the bottles, I have many older bottles from dharma and they seems to have been made better .... some of these bottles I have had for 20 years, the rest I use a bit of plumber's tape on the threads

I'm trying to get into tie dying I was wondering what do I need soda ask for I'm trying to dye baby onesies size is 0 to 3 months and preemie thank you very much
when using Procion Dyes, the Soda Ash is what activates them and causes them to bond with the cotton fibers ... here is my Beginner's Playlist which explains more of the process and has lots of tips and tricks to getting started : th-cam.com/play/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo.html if you are using a One Step Kit from the store, then there is already soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so as soon as you add water, the dyes are active... so it is best to get the onesies tied up before you mix the dyes
that would be the folding in half ... for a spiral., I lay the tee out flat and pick a spot on the tee to start twisting... the middle, or off the hip or shoulder BUT, for the Spider Design, it starts with folding the tee in half and then picking a spot along the fold to start twisting .... and depending on which direction you twist determines which direction the spider will face... I prefer to twist so I slowing go down the tee ✌🏻
@@MrTieDye thank you, YOU ROCK! I’ve learned so much from you… I have my first tapestry batching now, along with a few ice dyes! Happy holidays to you and yours 🤗
Hi! Can someone help? I'm trying to make a yellow and purple combo.. but they together make brown/maroon.. so what if i first dye yellow.. do the whole process and wash and stuff.. and then add purple to some area... will that work?
I would lay the purple down first and let it spread for a while, so I would start putting the dye on the tee about an inch or more from the line so it can spread.... then put the yellow on, leaving a bit of white space so the yellow can spread some... then touch up the last bit of white on the tee with more yellow, just go slow.... here is a video showing how I use Orange and Purple together in this manner : th-cam.com/video/TAo9BgtpZ2Q/w-d-xo.html

I am glad you find them helpful... I hope to get at least one more of them done, but if I am inspired to do more, I will .... but this is how I experimented back in the day when I was first learning this art... I would try a fold and then dye it in various ways to see what I could get ✌🏻
Love the spider design!
Thank you! Cheers!
These are marvelous!
thank you
I really like the "Wild Spider"! So cool :)
I like all of them but I was really curious about the shirt that you’re wearing when you’re doing the dying thanks again for all your info✌️
Thank you, As for the tee I am wearing at the beginning, it is what I call an Over Dye, I start with an already dyed tee, then I soak in soda ash in a separate basin as some dye can leach out into the soda ash ..... then I tie the tee with sinew so I can tie it very tightly.... this blocks the dye from getting to the areas under the sinew... then I dye the tee with black.... when I rinse it, the original colors of the tee shine through the black .... : th-cam.com/video/CPI_23w6JkY/w-d-xo.html
@@MrTieDye Thank you so much I just watched the dye over video guess what I’ll be doing today I have quite a few I can dye over thank you so much for all of your help✌️
Hey Mr.TieDye, have you tried the original dyes called RIT dyes in the Activites room of Max 12 called Tie-Dye Club and it is over by now??.

Awesome... have fun!!
I really love the spider design! It’s awesome looking!
thank you, I love it as well and it is fun to dye it in different ways to get different designs
I love tie dying a lot but can only do the simple things! I’ll have to watch your vids again to see how you do thing! Will you be doing any Christmas tie dye?
I am glad I went back to this vid. How do I guarantee the the wedge pie will have the point up and the color I want highlighted?
are you talking about the 4th tee in this video, the one I call Pie Dye?? if so, then to make sure you get the color you want in the middle, I suggest using a washable marker to mark where you want a certain color, then when you tie it up, make sure the color mark is visible and then dye accordingly ... I hope this answers your question, if not, then please ask a new one rather than reply as I do not get notified of replies ✌🏻
Thank you very much Carl! You are the best ;-) I also really like a lots the T shirt that you are wearing on the video! Did you make a video for it? How is it call?
He lists a link to his video in a couple of the comments above but you can type in Mrtiedye- Over dye.

@mrtiedye can you do a video on dip dyeing? specially in hot water.. i want to know what are the pros of both the methods.. with normal temperature water and hot water.
Thank you so much in advance!
Great suggestion, but I have never done dip dyeing.... I know Courtenay Pollock does dip dyeing ...
You should try the 2 color one like you did with the yellow and turquoise but just put turquoise on one side. I would try but some how I can't ever get the spider to show up and my ts just come out like a regular spiral
Didn't know about storing dye in the fridge.
yeah that was a game changer...
Maybe they'll get here quickly and surprise me!
I heard you say that you soaked them in soda ash AFTER you tied them?
I though you soaked them in soda ash just before the process of designing and tying???
I'm a beginner that will be starting after Christmas.
I've watched a lot of your videos and really thankful for them. ❤
Update: Just watched the whole thing.
BUT, you can also pre wash and then tie the tees while damp and then soak the tee in soda ash ... for this method, you need to be able to squeeze out the excess soda as without messing up your fold... so I tend to use my washer to spin out the excess as I can lean the tees (if they are tied up in a spiral, scrunch or spider as these designs are harder to squeeze without messing up the design) against the basin and once the spinning starts, they are flat against the walls of the washer
AND, one other way, which I have been exploring more with, is to tie and dye while they are just barely damp from the prewash... then at the end, I add a coat of soda ash over the top, then flip and add a coat to the bottom while it sits on the rack in my bin... this way excess soda ash or dye can drip out ... I show the bins I use in this video on how I batch my tees : th-cam.com/video/SvhwNQbhZJA/w-d-xo.html
AND, here is a video where I demo this process with three tees : th-cam.com/video/rkmAQxOu52A/w-d-xo.html
and here is a little more info on what Soda Ash/Sodium Carbonate does :
soda ash ash raises the pH level of the cotton (or other natural fibers like bamboo, hemp or linen) fibers and then when the dyes come in contact with them, the high pH level causes a chemical reaction in the dyes and causes them to form a permanent bond with the cotton fibers of the tee ... then you need time or heat to form the bond...
I like to use both so I batch my tees for 48 hours with heat added.... but 24 hours at 70F is a good time as well
and since you said you were new, here is more info that I post for new people, you may have already seen some of this, but just isn case :
Hello and Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tie-Dye ....
I use Procion Dyes I pre wash and pre soak the cotton tees in a Soda Ash solution, this raises the pH level of the cotton which activates the Procion Dyes (sources listed below) and causes a chemical bond to form between the cotton fibers and the Procion Dyes.
I have a ton of videos that are sorted into many different playlists so be sure to explore …
I have put a bunch of videos into one Playlist to help get you started with an overview of Tie-Dye, and then how to mix the Dyes, mix or make Soda Ash, Batch the tees (let the dyes set up so the bonding can happen), and the Rinse/Wash Out Process...

oh Carl ! wonderful different spider video. i am really intrigued with the pour dye. could you tell me how much dye powder to the one half cup water. or did i miss it? never got around to tell you how excited i was that you and Julie married !
Thank you ... and it is just regular mixed dye, the same as I would use in any of my other tie-dye videos, just poured from a cup instead of squeezed from a bottle .... so I use 5-6 tsp of dye powder to make 16 oz of dye
and thank you.... we have been together for 10 years and decided it was time to get married ❤️🌈✌🏻🙏

Love the wild one! What size shirt do you wear?
Thank you and I wear XL ✌🏻
I'm new to the dye and I've only been letting mine batch for 24 hours plus I haven't been using soda ash. Should I be using the soda ash and letting my products batch longer? One of them is a kit and it said only 6-8 hours but I did 24 hours. Gonna try this design plus the way you fold yours. Great designs
24 hours is a good batch time, I leave mine for 48 hours just to give more of the dye time to bond with the cotton fibers .... as for Soda Ash, the One Step Kits usually have soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so as soon as you add water to the bottles, the dye is active.... so to get better colors from the kits, I recommend doing a pre wash on the tees and then getting all of your tees folded and tied up and all ready to dye, then mix the dyes and use right away for the best colors
BUT, one more thing you could do to improve the colors from the kits even more is to buy some soda ash (Also known as Sodium Carbonate, I buy mine locally at a Pool Supply Company as they use the same chemicals to adjust the pH of pools and hot tubs) and do a pre soak on your tees and then wring out the excess.... I use my washer to 'Spin' out the excess soda ash (Just make sure that your washer does not spray water during the spin cycle, if it does, try setting it to halfway through the cycle, as excess water on the tee will dilute the soda ash) so the tee is barely damp when I fold and dye it

are your shirts for sale ? Great designs.
Thank you and yes, the ones I have for sale are in my store here : www.mrtiedye.com ✌️
Great! Love them. How do I keep white parts white?
part of keeping the white spots is batching for long enough... the soda ash is what activates the Procion dyes.... I batch my tees for 48 hours with heat added by stacking my tubs next to a heat vent (a good batch time is 24 hours with a temp of 70F) ... by the time I am done batching with heat, most of the dyes are exhausted, so there is less chance that they will back stain the white areas of the tee in the wash,
the other thing I do is start with a cold water rinse in the sink while the tee is still tied, this will rinse away the soda ash .....
and lastly, I use Synthrapol soap in the washes, it helps to keep the dyes suspended in the water... some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they to are pH neutral ... when doing the initial washout, you do not want to reactivate the dyes you rinsed away and some detergents have soda ash in them... so it is best to stick with a pH neutral soap for the initial wash out...

I noticed these didn't have the little gaskets like the other bottles I have.
for Black Light, to start, I recommend leaving some white in the tee as it will glow the best .... next would be bright colors ... they glow the best under black light ... so like Lemon Yellow, Turquoise and other lighter shades
as for the bottles, I have many older bottles from dharma and they seems to have been made better .... some of these bottles I have had for 20 years, the rest I use a bit of plumber's tape on the threads

if you are using a One Step Kit from the store, then there is already soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so as soon as you add water, the dyes are active... so it is best to get the onesies tied up before you mix the dyes
What is the main difference between the spider and the spiral?
that would be the folding in half ... for a spiral., I lay the tee out flat and pick a spot on the tee to start twisting... the middle, or off the hip or shoulder
BUT, for the Spider Design, it starts with folding the tee in half and then picking a spot along the fold to start twisting .... and depending on which direction you twist determines which direction the spider will face... I prefer to twist so I slowing go down the tee ✌🏻
