  • Welcome to another video :) 😀
Today I drive and explore one of Scotlands most dangerous and highest roads, The Applecross Pass or Bealach Na Ba(Pass Of the Cattle)This road is renowned for its stunning scenery, hairpin bends which resemble alpine roads, steep gradients and its remoteness. Often closed in the winter due to adverse weather, particularly snow and ice. This is no surprise as the summit reaches a height of 2,054 feet or 626 meters.

Here are some interesting facts about Bealach na Bà, also known as the “Pass of the Cattle”:
    1. Historic Route: Bealach na Bà is an ancient pass that was originally used for driving cattle between Applecross and the surrounding areas. The name means “Pass of the Cattle” in Gaelic, reflecting its original purpose.
    2. One of the Highest Roads in the UK: It reaches an altitude of 626 meters (2,054 feet), making it one of the highest and most challenging roads in the UK.
    3. Single-Track Road: The road is narrow and winding, with sharp hairpin bends and steep gradients of up to 20%. It’s single-track, meaning vehicles must use passing places to let each other by, which adds to the adventure.
    4. Dramatic Hairpin Turns: Bealach na Bà is famous for its hairpin bends, which are more common in the Alps than in the UK. This makes it a thrilling drive, attracting car and motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world.
    5. Weather Conditions: The pass is often closed during winter due to snow, ice, and severe weather. Even in summer, conditions can be unpredictable, and the road demands cautious driving.
    6. Incredible Views: On clear days, the summit offers stunning panoramic views across Skye, Raasay, and even as far as the Outer Hebrides. It’s one of the best spots in Scotland to witness the rugged beauty of the Highlands.
    7. Remote and Challenging: The route is remote, with limited facilities, and isn’t suitable for inexperienced drivers or large vehicles. Drivers must be prepared for its unique challenges, especially in adverse weather.
    8. Not Suitable for All Vehicles: Due to the narrow, steep, and winding nature of the road, Bealach na Bà is not recommended for large vehicles like buses, caravans, or motorhomes.
    9. Popular with Cyclists: Despite the difficulty, the pass is a popular route for cyclists looking for a challenge. The steep gradients and winding roads make it one of Scotland’s toughest cycling climbs.
    10. Filming Location: Bealach na Bà has featured in various documentaries and travel shows showcasing Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes and is popular on social media for its unique beauty and thrilling drive.
