I agree with you 100% about the lack of 'something special' with the West Highland trains. The Settle-Carlisle railway also has visitors from around the world, and the trains have volunteers selling souvenirs on board. We have bog-standard trolley food, but nothing to make it stand out as memorable. It is one of the great railway journeys of the world, and Scotrail could be adding so much value to the trip. And hey, good job you ate *after* squeezing through that hatch.
While tourism is big on the line it's also still a working railway getting people to and from Glasgow. The Sprinters though really are not right; I was on them in the mid 90s in that route and they really need to replaced with something newer. No chance of Scotrail doing that though.
I would pay extra for something like an observation car on incredible routes like this. Not a fan of Amtrak here in the US but something like that on the West Highland line would be fabulous.
Haha cheers mate, aye the scenery is just too good to not have something extra as an option. Even just CLEAN WINDOWS. I was recently in Switzerland watching the premium trains get a proper wash before EVERY journey. No surprise there though, they are the experts!
This was one of your very BEST videos; well shot and documented! You deserve an Academy award for the expert holding of the camera as you emerged and entered that hatch alone.
I remember seeing the train with observation carriage going through Drumry station (Clydebank) in early 60s when going to Primary school. Steam trains then
Brilliant adventure Steve... always glad to be along for the ride..👍🏻🇦🇺🦘..I'll be over in Scotland in a few weeks....you definitely sell your country well...🥃
On my only visit to Paris I was in Notre Dame where a young "gentleman" had his cap on, so I politely said to take it off. His tour guide lady smiled her thanks to me. Some people are so absmally ignorant.
Hi, Steve. First went on this journey in 1974. Believe it or not we were asked to sign a petition to keep this line as BR, as it was then, wanted to close it down. Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe ar part of my favouritist, great new word, places in whole world. In 2012 my son-in-law and I walked across the moor on the West Highland Way, then 2013 we completed the Scottish coast to coast by walking the Great Glen Way. I have been to the highlands more times than I can remember and they never fail to raise my heart. Thanks for the memories Steve ❤❤
Parts of Scotland really are stunning. They are places where you are reminded that it doesn't matter what people are arguing over, the world can still be an amazing place.
Aussie mum here who is no spring chicken. I’ve been overseas so many times but never to the UK and am so cross with myself for going to other places instead. I am determined to get there before I die, with our newly found half sister who we discovered last year and who our father never knew about before he died in 2022. I really feel something in my soul when I watch these, the family is from Scotland and England. Really want to see where our ancestors are from!!
Met a couple who were saying the walk across the glenfinnan viaduct was amazing. I had to point out to them that it was a live railway and it wasn't a footpath.
My brother was half way accross this viaduct when he realised it was still a working line. About pooped his pants and hot footed it off before he met any trains.....
Spectacular and wistful. The weather added to the mystique. Those background mountain ranges were like wisps of silk. No painter is like Mother Nature. THANK you for this beautiful trip.
Absolutely lovedthis one. We've been to Glenfinnan, eaten in the railway car, visited the monument visitors centre and went down to the Loch. Next day we did Fort William to Mallaig on the train. Just breathtaking. Thanks Steve ❤
I looked up things to do in and around Glenfinnan a couple of weeks ago, and now my computer won't stop displaying ads telling me to visit Scotland lol Thank you for taking us along on this breathtaking journey!
I agree; this is one of your best videos. The scenery, the fellow hikers, the interesting stops along the way to the monument ... all were an inspiration to take more walks and look for the little delights along the way. Thank you from Colorado, US.
In 1991 I went from Glasgow to Fort William on the charming West Highland Line, and then on a preserved steam-hauled train to the delightful fishing port of Mallaig where I saw seals and the gulls were stealing fish from the fishermen's box catchs. I then took a ferry to Kyle of Lochalsh. Enroute we passed a replica Viking ship sailing from Scandinavia to Dublin.
Super Steve strikes again. Awesome footage. The moody weather made the scenery absolutely spectacular. Great commentary as usual. Please don't retire. Love your personal and dedicated effort you always portray 😊😊
You do around my part of the UK here in South London. Many beautiful parish churches. St Mary's & St Finnan's is a Roman Catholic Church and is probably well attended. It is beautiful.
Scot ,didn't recognise him to start with, good video, views are amazing, he will love the gift that you got him, what alovely walk in the Summer, Steve you did very well squeezing through that hatch, very interesting
Fabulous day out Steve! I felt I was right there along with you. Have to say, I loved that proud Scot look on your face as you stood at the bottom of the wee church looking over Loch Shiel. The absolute magical beauty of it all. A look of recognition of why our ancestors fought and died to keep it that way. As a fellow Scot myself, I felt and understood that completely. Just so surreal. 🏴❤️. I also loved the beautiful stained glass windows in the church and the polished granite pillars (I think they were granite, and think I saw a couple of marble ones too). Such a beautiful place of worship. Loved your reverence within the church, removing your cap to show respect. A true gentleman. Can’t wait till your next video Steve. 😊
As someone that hasn't ventured any further North than Cambridge, I can say hand on heart that Scotland has the the most beautiful landscapes in the British isles. My wife won't be able to do the walks, but I am definitely going to visit this beautiful gem. Thanks Steve for all your lovely videos.
Thank you so much. My mother's ancestors came from that part of the world and I would love to see it someday. I would definitely plan to spend some time there now that I've seen your video. I live in Vancouver so I already have the perfect wardrobe!
Thanks for that one Steve, many years ago my husband and I climbed up the monument, blimey I must have been a lot slimmer to get through that wee hole at the top 😂 Love your work 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Steve, Thanks for taking the viewers along to Glenfinnan - including inside and to the top of the monument. You did all the work getting there etc. and we, the viewers get all the benefit. Another very interesting adventure.
Hats off to you, Steve, for your thoughtfulness in removing your hat when entering the church. We seem to have forgotten so many signs of respect in our daily lives. Your videos are not only extremely informative, but they also go far beyond what commercial travel programs offer. Your reactions to new surroundings are a joy to behold. Best wishes and safe travels.
I grew up on the station at Glenfinnan - it's so nice to see people visiting the village beyond taking a photo of the viaduct and immediatly leaving! Top points for travelling by train too and thank you for showing potential visitors that you do not have to travel by car to do these things. Great video :)
Even with the rubbish gloomy weather, our country and its views are simply stunning. The hills with the snow etc and the station set in the middle of it absolutely beautiful 🏴🏴
@ 13:46 I could sit and soak in that view for hours. What a spot for a picnic or to camp out for a day or two! Nice catch, Steve. 👍 You never disappoint.
Adore your videos. Love your enthusiasm for everything regardless of the weather you have to deal with. You are indeed a breath of fresh air. Optimistic and upbeat, I so enjoy your videos. Keep ‘em coming please. ❤
A good day out Steve. Out tour last year we enjoyed the West Highland Line to Fort William by train where we spent a couple of days, then we took the train from Fort William to Mallaig, then by coach up to Inverness. With a couple of days in Inverness we enjoy a train journey on the Kyle Line, while I had waited some ten years to travel on the West Highland Line I was equally impressed with the scenery on the Kyle Line. Looking forward to your next adventure, cheers Paul.
Just finished your latest video excellent as always but that scenery is literally breathtaking. It’s now made its way to the top of my must do trips. And I need to say a massive note of respect to you for removing the Folsom on entering that gorgeous church.
Just love Rannoch Moor. Last time I went to Rannoch station there was a lovely cafe with the most gorgeous cakes. Worth a visit. Thank you, really enjoy your videos, unpretentious and informative .
I’m a retired train driver but back in the late eighties l was released from driving to to be part of a small film crew to make in house training films for the then BRB. For of the films we were given a loco and driver to run on that line to how the show how the signalling system works. During a break we walked along the track onto the viaduct wish l had taken more photos. I would add being all trains drivers we were all current with our safety critical qualifications and were there officially.
Another fun video, many thanks. I climbed the Glenfinnan monument when I was younger and more sprightly! Getting on to the top platform certainly was a bit hairy. Don't remember having to book or pay an entrance fee at that time, though as we are members of the NTS, maybe it used to be included. Really Scottish weather, eh?
I love your Train journeys. I was born in Swansea Wales and lived there until I moved to Stafford with my son two years ago . My dad was from Swansea . My mam was from Paisley. All our holidays were spent around Scotland . This film takes me back to my younger days . Your lovely voice and sweet personality make it special .
Fabulous video , have driven up and down that road many a time but you taking us on foot and by train was spectacular and I’ve seen the views in an entirely different perspective. Love the genuine friendship that has developed between you and Scott, brought a smile to my face seeing you meet up. Thanks again Steve , loved it.
I'm watching this video for the fourth time! What a video! I just love it, the best 👌 It's a reminder of the Scottish vacation-23. GREAT THANKS STEVE 👏
Snowy hills isn't really the first thing that pops to mind when you discuss Scotland with people who haven't been there (like me), but it's absolutely lovely. And what a pleasant surprise to find Scott along the way! Gives me something to look forward to watching tomorrow
I'm not Scottish but know they have ski slopes as in Ireland all we have are artifical ones. I was envous of the Scottish growing up being able to ski without having to go abroad. Some people don't realise Australia has ski slopes.
Hi Steve I have watched many of your videos, enjoyed them all, I visited Glenfinan many years ago, don’t do much travelling now I am 78,really enjoyed this video thankyou for making them, been round the world twice, but Scotland is the most beautiful place on earth.look forward to more videos from you.many thanks.
I think its been the best part of almost 30 years since I've been there. Just as beautiful as I remember it, the journey/scenery all the way up to Mallaig is breath taking. I love this part of the country. Will have to head up to visit it again next time I'm up around Fort William area.
Absolutely stunning. Revived wonderful memories! Thanks. Thought you were going to Switzerland? Are you stuck in the alps? Should we send a wee St Bernard w a large flask to fetch you. Happy trails Steve!!
What a fantastic journey Steve! Scotland at its best. The final destination Glenfinnan is just amazing. I was there in July -23, staying at The Armoury (filmed after the church) for five days, an accommodation I highly recommend. 😄👍
Born in Scotland, proud of my country, living in England I miss it so much. My daughter born in England is moving to Scotland in 5 years time....she has spent every holiday up there and she, her husband and my 6 month old grandson see my home country as their future...
I’m Australian but my paternal great grandfather was born in Glasgow in 1873 and then emigrated to New Zealand, then here. I haven’t been yet but I dream of it, and touching the soil for myself. How wonderful for your girl and her family ❤
Wow, that was a humdinger of a video, Steve. Scenery and colours were absolutely stunning! I'm not sure I could manage the monument - I'm not good at heights or confined spaces. The dining car looked wonderful. Many thanks for bringing us along on this trip!
New subscriber here! You've inspired me to get out and explore more this year, my partner and I love watching your videos. He is Swedish and I'm from England , he has just been visiting for a week and I gave him the grand tour of Northumberland and Edinburgh. We are looking forward to getting out a lot more this year, Glenfinnan is definitelty on the list.
I have got to ask why people use the word “Partner” because if you’re married then they are your Husband or Wife. If not then they’re your Boyfriend or Girlfriend. I can understand if they’re your business partner but not for a relationship.
@@plugsocket9432 It's just another word for what you described. I'm sure you use words that are different from what others say to talk about the same thing.
@@plugsocket9432 just an nondescript way of saying your significant other! I'm in my mid 30s and saying " boyfriend" seems a little bit too immature at this age.
@@plugsocket9432I mean if you've been together with someone for a number of years saying boyfriend/girlfriend does sound a bit non committal. Also, 'partner' assumes a much more equitable arrangement which is also not gender defining. I think it's quite common for married people to use this terminology, after all its nobody else's business what someone's marital arrangements are.
Your videos remind me of my childhood. Family rail card traveling all over the UK with my parents. Walking everywhere when we got there. Great memories.
What a wonderful childhood you had! I’m Australian and we went camping with our grandparents, uncles and aunties growing up and it was magical and I am so grateful for the childhood that I had too. So different from yours 🤗
I looked around the church last September there was a deer feeding off the grass next to the door. Made a good film for our holiday. this year we will pass again on our way to Skye. Thanks Steve.
" All Weather Lined Notebook " - that's a very good idea ! 👍 I actually guessed it would be your mate Scott. What a nice thing to see. What a good guy.
@@sheenamaclean8324 I for one hadn't seen it. I knew it would be him because I have the ability to see things before they happen. Would anyone like to know when the nuclear war starts ?
Stunning views all around. What a day! I’ve been to the viaduct (all to briefly). Had to settle for a climb up the hill adjoining the car park SW on the viaduct. Wish I had had the time for that NE view. The trail from the Station to the viaduct was great! Loved all the boardwalk sections. I’m mightily impressed you tackled the Monument. Surprised at the relatively inexpensive price, but I don’t think I could have handled those stairs or that hatch at the top…so, thanks for bringing us along. It makes me laugh when you and Scott “run into each other “. Best of all was that amazing train ride. Cheers, and ATB!
Thanks for another excellent video, and for daring to steer clear of the well beaten tourist trail. It was also lovely to see Scott’s cameo appearance (I subscribe to his channel too). Would love to see you guys collaborate on a feature-length video someday. As always, a solid 10/10 from me.
Steve, you do Scotland proud with the amount of content you push out showing off how great a country it is and what their is to see outside the big 2 cities. This vlog was that in a nutshell.
I remember passing through all those locks in fort william back in -94 as a student on an school ship, we sailed from Öckerö sweden across the north sea, through the Caledonia canal and north up through the hebridees. It was an beautiful trip, and it has had me coming back to scotland repeatedly since❤
Great video today and wow that scenery.we called in at the green welly shop while we were driving around.plus had a look at Glencoe beautifull place but so many visitors too many for me I'm afraid.my treat would have been to find a seat for a few hours looking at that stunning view.basicly what I do in my garden looking at my trees.but you have to get out there and explore this world we live in don't you.thank 🚞
I really enjoyed this journey..so beautiful ❤ I would love to visit and so many places to explore 🤗 the church is beautiful it reminds me of a church I saw in Ireland. Thank you for sharing.
Hi just saw your new video and it's fantastic the view of the mountains and the monument was amazing wee tight squeeze but you made it. The train carriage made into a cafe it's fabulous Steve. It was very nice of scott to meet you and give you a prezzie and can't wait for the new video.

Scotrail could install windows that can be slid open and allow passengers to take pot shots at the livestock. Even rent them out a blunderbus.
This was one of your very BEST videos; well shot and documented! You deserve an Academy award for the expert holding of the camera as you emerged and entered that hatch alone.

It wasnt Daniel Radcliffe was it ?
Once upon a time of course, you could have got your connection from Dunblane.
I worked that line when we had proper trains. Sprinters are awful.

Scotland's population is projected to decline and by the most in the Uk so a good move.
I’m Australian but my paternal great grandfather was born in Glasgow in 1873 and then emigrated to New Zealand, then here. I haven’t been yet but I dream of it, and touching the soil for myself. How wonderful for your girl and her family ❤
Excellent video diary, loved the wee Church/Chapel.❤️👍
Nice quaint place to visit.
Wow, that was a humdinger of a video, Steve. Scenery and colours were absolutely stunning! I'm not sure I could manage the monument - I'm not good at heights or confined spaces. The dining car looked wonderful. Many thanks for bringing us along on this trip!
Fingers crossed for 140,000 this weekend!
Yet a nother great blog thank you for showing us the beautiful scenery.
Welcome aboard!
@@karenglenn6707 we camped quite a but too in some of the seaside towns. Used the trains a lot because my mom and dad never owned a car.
What a lovely trip today, all of my favorite places, we went on the steam train🤩🤩 thanks Steve
Thanks for your trip!👌 Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪😀 👍👍👍
Another awesome day out for you and thank you so much for sharing.
I looked around the church last September there was a deer feeding off the grass next to the door. Made a good film for our holiday. this year we will pass again on our way to Skye. Thanks Steve.
Always enjoy your videos, finding great places for us to visit. Cheers
Another refreshing video Steve . Very Inspirational -- Planning my summer already thanks to you :)
Absolutely bloomin beautiful. Thank you.
I was thinking what a great vlog it would be with scott.you 2 must do more together.another challenge perhaps
We were there in June 2013 and it was a different place, no crowds, no huge car park, a wonderful experience!
Stupendous views from that path above the station. The view would make a great oil painting. Mean, moody, and magnificent!
" All Weather Lined Notebook " - that's a very good idea ! 👍
I actually guessed it would be your mate Scott. What a nice thing to see. What a good guy.
I thought it was going to be Alicja, but others may have guessed it was Scott if they saw his vid first.
I remember as a wee lad in 1981 riding on the train to Mallaig behind Double headed class 37s with an observation car on the back
As you say, Steve, scenery that's like oil paintings coming alive. Simply stunning.
Hooray, Glenfinnan!:)
This a beautiful train route. Took it last year all the way to Ferrol. Good to see part of that trip in this video. Loved it.
