    Did this in the opposite direction in my scirocco in the eighties with my first wife. She was black Kenyan and we went into the pub in Applecross and it was a moment like in the old westerns when a stranger comes into the saloon. You could have heard a pin drop. I was young and a bit of a coward I suppose and we turned around and went back out again. I realised later that it wasn’t racism or malice but merely my wife was one of the first coloured people that many of them would have seen. We used to stay in the Strome Ferry hotel as I recall. Happy days. Gonna do it on the bike next year. Cameras never do the gradients justice. 😂

    I don't think none bikers will realise how hard some parts of that were especially at slow speeds and video never shows the true incline well done

      You are so right , has to be some of the steepest inclines I have ever ridden up and down and action cameras defo don't show this on film. Thanks for watching Stephen and stay safe my friend.

    Did this road back in August 2017. Pitched in the campsite at the top, went off for a days riding on return weather conditions had deteriorated drastically and had to climb Belach Na Bah in 70 mile gusts and heavy rain to get back to the tent. What an experience. Thanks for showing it us with better conditions. Will have to try again one day

    My dad used to hire a campervan when we were kids. The family did it at least twice in the early sixties. It was torture, mums cooking, no internet, no mobile signal, strewth, don't know how we survived. Wait a minute, nothings changed! Its just a lot busier. But its nice if the weathers good. Please remember, take your time, ride safe and be thoughtful of other users. Nice vid.

    Hi Steve. WOOOOWSERS my friend :)))).. Just cracking my can of Iron Brew now.. Totally enjoyed this video .My apprehension of the drive is much reduced now after seeing it in full. I can see that there is time to psych myself up for the twistys and also time to chill my heartbeat before the next. The aspect ratio, the sound track; Just perfect.. Oh and you are a gentleman; wishing other bikers an enjoyable expierience.
    Bikers really are from another and better dimension of road users. I will watch this video many times over and be humming allong every time..Omk (oh my karma :) ) I am itching to start my FLTa-NC767.. Keep safe my friend HAPPY DAYS, once again kind regard from Paula and myself :))))))).

      @Steve-Clark-1200rt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dave pleased you enjoyed it, what the video doesn't show is the steepness of the road but as far as the bends go you'll be fine especially if your doing it anti-clockwise as the 3 hard hairpins are easier going downhill than uphill.
      Liking the FLTa-NC767 tag ha ha I just know that you and your good lady are in for a right blast trust me. please stay safe both yourself and Paula and lets hope all our plans for this year go to plan. Thanks again my friend appreciate it.(Keep drinking the Iron Bru lol)

    Thank you for sharing that, Steve. Great to see that brilliant road again. I went over Bealach Na Ba 45 years ago in an old Renault 4 with an 850cc engine (smaller than my bike now). We had to wait at the summit until the steam stopped pouring out. On the return from Applecross the pathetic drum brakes were fading, so I pulled the handbrake on a few notches to do a quick adjustment of the shoes (remember that?). Then a couple more notches... and a couple more. Then the handbrake lever (a bit of bent rod sticking out under the dashboard) came off in my hand. Needless to say, I was sweating a bit when we made to the bottom. Since then, I've done a fair bit of bike touring way up North in Scotland but I haven't done the Pass of the Cattle again. Hope I can - and stay at the Applecross Inn - some time soon.

This section is one of the main highlights of the journey, but the entire route is absolutely spectacular, and one never tires of the 'scenery overload' that can occur! You certainly had the weather there, I have ridden that pass a few times with full load of camping gear and 18 inch apes on my Harley - Great fun ! One morning I went out of the campsite that way and as I got up at the higher ground found myself blown across the road a bit - I mentioned it in the bar that evening and was told a guy on a sportsbike got blown off the road, dropped his bike and watched it tumble down the side of a hill..... I would offer a word of warning for anyone doing this ride - lots of tourists from Europe drive this road and forget they are in the UK. They pull to their right at the passing places nearly hitting bikers - I punched one in the campsite when he accused me of riding incorrectly..... bloody foreigners ! Oh and if you like steep gradients, try the Hard Knot Pass in Cumbria (east to west) - it is 30% and more in places !

    The first time I did it was 2003 on a 600 hornet, before the NC500 when it was just the tourist route with hardly any tourists.
    I was staying in Lochcarron and the old guy from the B&B said it will be in the clouds, and he was right. What I wasn't expecting to come across was a full sized coach on the hairpins in think fog. 😲

    2 - Try to maintain good separation from any other companion
    3 - stay visible don't turn into corners before you can see the exit
    4 - keep your speed down
    5 - expect the unexpected
    6- Road surfaces will not be good
    7- look out for sheep and other animals on the road
    8- roadside gravel is every where
    9 - passing places are exactly that Not photo opportunities
    10 - relax and enjoy the reason you took that road in the first place
    11- Be aware 10 miles if done wrongly on these roads can be more stressful than 100 on a double carriageway

I've done the east coast, north coast, west coast roads and up the middle bit on a Virago. The last place I went a few years ago on the H-D was Selkirk for a couple of nights and visited supposedly haunted Hermitage Castle. Didn't see a ghost though.

    Nice video. Thank you for sharing it. I rode the NC500 anti clockwise in October 2020 and the weather was...mixed. Stayed in Inverness, Lybster, Ullapool and back to Inverness. I had to dry out the air filter three times when the rain got so heavy. And I ruined a leather glove drying it on the engine and cooked it. A great experience and one I will repeat again after the end of lockdown. Id heard horror stories about this pass but it was ok and saw a huge antlered stag on the way down on the Loch Kishorn side.

    I honestly get the part about the road being allegedly challenging but in all fairness we have roads very similar all over Scotland and some with better views too One such example would be the road from Lairg to Altnaharra and on to Bettyhills on Scotlands North Coast. Mostly single track definitely less travelled and just as spectacular and easily done in a day
    Start off in Lairg on the A836 till you exit Altnaharra then turn off onto the B873 running up to Bettyhills
    I can certainly promise you will not be disappointed on two wheels or four 👍

      @@Steve-Clark-1200rt Not so much a new road to ride More of variation of the existing NC500 but without the long drag up to john o groats as the road I mention actually takes you up the spine of the Scottish Highlands not the Eastern peripheral route and to be honest is a long travelled fishing route for myself and others by two and four wheels Remember to enjoy the purely single track with passing places all the way from just north of Lairg to Bettyhills as just as challenging as the Applecross pass but on a far longer and larger scale. Scenery ? Out of this world Steve and as a precursor to your journey I would recommend a Google earth preview at street level just to confirm my assertions 👍

    Really enjoyed your video. I’m kind of moping about this winter since we cancelled what would have been a trip to Greece in 2020, so we were looking back to a fabulous 2019 in which we rode this pass and a bunch of the NC500 on a Tracer 900 rented from Saltire. This was (obviously) one of our favourite roads! We went the opposite way and it was a similarly dark and tempestuous day and as the road climbed out of the lower valley, we were suddenly blasted by a crosswind from the high side that threatened to hurl us down the slope. We have experience with this sort of thing so I absolutely loved every minute, though my wife, initially, was less enthused. I’m glad to know the proper name, but, by whatever name, it’s a fantastic road. The best roads we have in Canada can’t quite compare, but between the open topography and the engineering for drivers of the bottom 20th percentile, we don’t really stand a chance. I’d jump at the chance to ride in your playground any time. And ignore the whingers; your music picks are great. Dan in B.C.

    Cheers Steve, enjoyed watching that. Nice to have the whole ride and not an edit. Mike Rowland and myself should be doing it that way this coming June all being well. Planned to do it last year but Covid put pay to that.
    Stay safe my friend, and here's looking forward to better times. 👊

    Just done the whole of the Applecross in a Peugeot boxer campervan, had to watch your video to see where i went, couldn’t believe it while i was doing it, those hairpins are something else, if you thought the track was narrow while on a bike it’s a lot narrower in a van. Hope you done the B869 that’s another good one.

    Perfect riding. I would love to do it on a small displacement bike, like a honda 90 or a 125 just find them more of a challenge and more fun. Great vidio mate very educational

    thanks for the vid. I'll be doing this next week (end May) in the opposite direction. I skipped chunks of your vid coz i want to leave some surprises lol, and will probably re-watch in full when i get back to compare, but it doesnt look too bad, and no worse than some of the tracks in the north yorks moors & dales with the hairpins and 30% gradients, so hope it's not too busy :)

    • @Steve-Clark-1200rt
      @Steve-Clark-1200rt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its really nothing to worry about Bob the ones you mention in the dales and moors are a lot harder than this one. There are 3 hairpins that the road has been widened for and the rest is just a pleasure to ride, Enjoy my friend.
