I Had To Pinch Myself! | Breathtaking Winter Wonderland In The Remote Scottish Highlands!
Hi Everyone!
Welcome to my latest video where I take in the majestic Glencoe, by the means of a Roadtrip on the 167 mile A82. Starting at Bridge of Orchy, we travel North and West, towards Glencoe village. Today there was a lovely frost and blanket of snow on the mountains around. It was stunning! What I would describe as a winter wonderland!
As we’re near to Christmas, could it be Fairytale in Glencoe? 😀❄️ As always, here are some facts about the area below 👇
The Glencoe section of the A82 is one of Scotland’s most famous and awe-inspiring stretches of road, known for its dramatic landscapes and rich history. Here’s what makes it so special:
Geography & Scenery
1. The Glen: The A82 runs through Glencoe, a steep-sided valley carved by glaciers during the Ice Age. It is flanked by towering peaks, including the Three Sisters of Glencoe (Beinn Fhada, Gearr Aonach, and Aonach Dubh).
2. Wild Beauty: The area is renowned for its rugged, untamed landscapes, with waterfalls tumbling down the mountainsides and mist often cloaking the peaks.
3. Buachaille Etive Mòr: This iconic mountain, also called the “Great Herdsman of Etive,” marks the entrance to Glencoe and is one of Scotland’s most photographed peaks.
Landmarks Along the A82
4. Meeting of the Three Waters: A picturesque waterfall near the base of the Three Sisters, visible from the road.
5. The Kingshouse Hotel: Located just before entering Glencoe from the south, this historic inn is a popular stop for travelers and walkers.
6. Glencoe Village: At the northern end of the glen, this small village offers accommodations, dining, and a visitor center.
7. Rannoch Moor: The approach to Glencoe from the south crosses this expansive, hauntingly beautiful moorland.
Historical Significance
8. Glencoe Massacre (1692): The glen is infamous for the massacre of Clan MacDonald by government forces, a betrayal that is remembered in Scottish history. A memorial to the event can be found in Glencoe Village.
9. Military Roads: The A82 follows part of an 18th-century military road built after the Jacobite uprisings to help control the Highlands.
Tips for Travelers
10. Photography: There are several lay-bys along the A82 where you can safely stop to take in the views.
11. Hiking: Glencoe offers many hiking opportunities, from short walks to challenging climbs, such as the Devil’s Staircase or the ascent of Buachaille Etive Mòr.
12. Wildlife Spotting: Look out for red deer, golden eagles, and other wildlife.
Fun Fact
Glencoe has been a filming location for movies like Skyfall (James Bond), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Braveheart.

"Your videos are really fantastic! The thumbnails and video quality are superb! However, you might draw in even more people if you make a few tweaks in accordance with TH-cam's algorithm and SEO. These adjustments, in my opinion, will further increase the success of your channel.
Hi sir! How are you? Sir, are you interested?
Great video. I really like what you do. Just a suggestion, in one of your other videos I saw where you posted a map showing your route in the beginning. That was very helpful to see exactly where you’re taking us in addition to your explanation. Especially for those us not quite familiar with all the smaller towns you sometimes mention. Keep up the good work and we’ll keep watching! Cheers!
Thanks very much, yes I’ve recently discovered how to apply interactive maps, so will be more regular 😀
Most Spectacular Drive in Scotland? Most Spectacular Drive anywhere.
Travelled through there from Tyndrum, Rannoch Moor must be one of the most barren but beautiful spots I have ever travelled through. Love the A86 and the town of Kingussie. Nearby Ruthven barracks is one of my favorite spots on this earth, just nice memories of that location...
It certainly is, I love it. 😍
Alba shaor a nis
When read this question i think back to an episode of Top Gear, Jeremy said through the BBC had went on the search for the Worlds Best Road and was shocked to find out that it was right here in Scotland. That comment i remember and i also remember it's popularity after he did. Edit: I would love to know what those numpties are doing digging a trench down the middle of it, if connecting anything, connecting what to where? can't understand it as looks like the same set of idiots that laid all the city fiber, same purple pipes.
I remember when they did it, incredible 😍 I’m not sure what’s going on there, we don’t need any more of our beautiful countryside ruined!
I could have watched you driving along there for hours.... video was over just as getting in to it. When get bored i do Dundee to Inverness as at just over 2hrs, just along the road really.
Thanks mate 👍
My favourite place on the planet! Used to drive through Glencoe once a week in my lorry, it never looks the same with the ever changing light. Just watch for the deep potholes in the laybys which are often full of water.
If that tanker slipped on the bend going that speed you were a goner. My heart skipped a beat.
14.20 just incredible❤
Thanks Andy mate 👍😃
Glencoe is very beautiful (I have only ever driven through it!) but being only a few hours from Glasgow it can get really busy. There’s some really beautiful hidden gems if you get off the beaten track. Great video though the snow capped mountains always get me in the feels!
It can get very busy indeed. I love going off the ‘beaten track’ regularly, but there is just something special about Glencoe for me ❤️
Incredible filming as always mate, thanks for sharing...can't wait to get up there next year, absolutely love all of this area, especially Glencoe,it's easy to see why so many people are drawn to this area. Hoping to go out of season so it's not quite so rammed. Merry Christmas and all the best to you for 2025.. a year I know is going to change my life forever👍👍
Thanks again Andy, and all the best for 2025 mate, have a blast 💥 ☘️
Two hours from Glasgow isn't really that remote... It's why so many tourists visit it each year.
I’d have to agree with that! It’s the reason Iv never been to Glencoe it’s just to accessible and pretty much always busy. So many less known places to go before I attempt to go there!!
Your right it’s too easily accessible, a nightmare in the summer , car parks overflowing in to the roads etc
Depends on your idea of remote I suppose. The NC500 is more popular, and has some of the most remote spots in the country.
Great scenic footage.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow. So beautiful. I don't think I'll ever get to Scotland ... but a large part of my heart lies there, courtesy of my forebears. We don't even get any snow where I live! Apart from the huge mountains, I love the escarpments - those slopes - 18:45 - truly breathtaking. I even love the bridges, sturdy stone structures. Thanks so much ♥♥♥
Thanks again Barbara ❄️😃
My favourite bit of Glencoe is a wee patch of grass at the foot of Buchaille Etive Mor - just opposite the wee climber's hut, by which there are (were?) stepping stones over the River Coupall. This was the site of my first-ever camping expedition in 1974, to which we travelled in my uncle's Jaguar - that got parked in an infomal parking area next to the road. It was also my first visit to that part of the Highlands, and to Oban, etc. I wish they'd demolish the grafitti-covered cottage formely owned by you-know-who. It is an eyesore - and even in this negative way, he doesn't deserve to be remembered. Also, the Three Sisters Stretch, which is so dramatic! Of course, you enhance everywhere you go, Liam - thanks again for sharing so expertly!
Great scenery.
As you found this weather is hazardous. Cold air from the mountains drops into the bottom causing frost pockets and freezing fog. It can also get very wet and windy. Once came up the Glen in wet, windy weather on a motorcycle at about 50mph and the rain was passing me in big wet globs. Lucky it stopped by the time I got to the Green Welly. Where the 'new' road runs over the river and by the pipers falls the original course of the road is to the west and above coming down from the right and away to the left 1/2 mile either side of the climbers (Hamish Macinnes) cottage.
It’s very exposed to the elements Brian. Makes it even more so dramatic, especially in some wintry conditions 🥶 ❄️
☸
Dios es grande. Pude rodar por esta carretera y admirar este lugar.
You're right about the light. Its is muted and soft, like in the paintings of Scotland we have on our walls here at home. 55:22 is my favourite view - expansive, with the hills and cloud in the distance. Beautiful, thank you.
Thanks so much Barbara
Thank-you. It is just over 50 years since my one trip along that road at the age of 10. Cluanie Inn looks about twice the size, but apart from that, it's all much as I remember it!
Thanks Paul!
The beer delivery artic from Lochcarron gets over. It's protected by Armco barriers so not that dangerous?
Not too bad. Just a bit tongue in cheek 😀
One of the very best films ive seen of this route...thanks so much for sharing mate....am working my way through aa of your films!👍👍👏👏👏👏🙏❤️
Thanks again Andy, another cracker coming on Friday. Stunning views ❤️🏴
Fantastic film as always mate, definetly shows i need to get off the typical tourist routes when i come up,and really get exploring..thanks again for such a stunning vlog👍👍👏👏👏
Thanks Andy hope you’re well mate 👍👍
I've driven this route a couple of times and it really is quite spectacular... Great video.
Thanks a lot 😊
Word of warning, there is only one fuel stop plus one electric between the two towns, however many eating places. @ 11:00 turn left, turn right onto old road for view down on castle. this road is 4 sheep wide(Hamish Macbeth set). @24:20 old road to right, to Loch Gary, now flooded, to due to building two hydro electric dams @41:43 old road from right, from Loch Gary. @46:30 trees on right shaken by passing aircraft slipstream, mid 80's
Thanks for the info Brian😀
our taxi tour guide does it in the opposite direction, crosse the bridge and we come back via the glenelg ferry,
Beautiful there too John. Need to give it a go!
Beautifully shot, just gorgeous. Mallaig looks v pretty. Thank you 🙂
I have to say it: Well ‘spotted’! Sorry.
Can't wait to do this next year. Attempted it this year at the end of May but the weather was bad going up so I bottled it😮.
£18 return is brilliant! Glad to see you promoting public transport: made me wonder whether these buses pass close to Youth Hostels? Or maybe make connections with local buses / trains that could take travellers closer to them? Could they take a few bikes in the hold?
Hi Linda, plenty space for bikes underneath in the hold. I’m sure hostels are passed on the way. I would need to research and find out. I know the Inverness - Fort William buses connect with Oban, and I’m sure most other services are the same. Seems to be a lot more interconnected than the trains.
You chose the right day 🙂. Beautiful morning, love the frost, I'm a bit of a snow and frost person meself ... we have fam connections to Oban ... no, don't believe the monster still lurks in the Ness, maybe once, but no longer ... Thanks for posting 🙂
It’s was a beautiful day Barbara. The rain has settled back in now. Hopefully the clear nights and frosty mornings return soon 😀
Sitting in Nevis Bank inn, you see the Glasgow to Uig busses passing. That must be an 8 hour journey
I believe so John. Maybe I’ll tackle it one day :)
Just watched it again 🙂 The music's great too. Have you ever wondered why it is called Applecross? I have been enchanted by that name, but do not know its origins, I'm sure it has nothing to do with apples! ... The road reminds me of our Desert Road in NZ, which has a similar barren, snow landscape, and drops down to a lake (loch) - Lake Taupo. But that is SH1 - our main highway, so not quite so challenging for drivers. We have 3 mountains (volcanoes), but not like yours .... I think your video of the road to Loch Etive is the best, most beautiful .... that is how I came to your site. 🙂
@barbarathomas2561 from the archives they've said that bealach na ba is Gaelic for pass of the cattle ....Applecross got it's name from its origin Aber crossan which Iver time changed to Applecross
It would appear your question has been answered Barbara :) Its a brilliant road. Steeped in history. We have had some very heavy snowfall across the highlands in the last week, and I believe the road was closed for a while. Thank you, I’ll be back up to Glen Etive soon. Waiting for the next snowfall to capture it all ❄️ 😁
Wonderful - but you seem to go v fast - is the film sped up or is it just a trick of the camera? And how do drivers know to pull off when someone is coming in the opposite direction, you can't always see ahead, can you? Thanks so much 🙂
I'm from the US but have visited Scotland many times. It's seems crazy, but the speed limit on most of the B roads and single track is 60 MPH. It really take some getting used to ( there's almost never a shoulder). Having said that it's pretty impressive how well the system works. The Scots know when to pull over and most people respect the other drivers. Sometimes you have to back up a bit but it's no big deal. This system would NEVER work in the US, too much aggression.
@@rollingpuck Interesting comment. I'm in NZ - ppl can be pretty aggressive here too unfortunately. Thanks.
Hi Barbara, wasn’t going particularly fast, maybe 30-35mph at the most, it does always seem faster when you film on a single track road. That’s a good question, to be honest normally just instinct. I have driven single track roads since I passed my test at 17, so it’s just normal to me. I can see why some get daunted by it, especially as normally they are used to big wide roads.
Here is a tip for drivers who have never been there, so of course on one track roads use the passing places to allow cars coming towards you to pass, most people understand that, but the passing places should also be used to allow traffic behind you to get passed you if you are slow moving. So for example if you are a campervan and you are labouring up the steep incline with a large queue of traffic crawling behind you, the etiquette is that you should just pull into a passing place for 45 seconds and let the traffic get passed you. Even if you have one car behind you who is looking to get passed, just pull in and let them get passed. Many visitors are either not aware that this is expected or are unwilling....there is no room for any competitiveness or thoughtless driving on these roads, it causes frustration, especially for local drivers. Drive safe and be thoughtful towards your fellow road users.
Great tips Chris 👍
If u love the rugged landscape and drive you should go to lewis/Harris...or have u already been ?
Hi, I’ve been to Lewis in Harris but not in years. My favourite is Harris. It’s stunning, and the beaches are the best you’ll experience anywhere in the world. I regularly travel to South Uist, where I have family. The landscape is barren and rugged, but much flatter compared to Lewis and Harris.
@coasttocoast23 I'm more obsessed with the real remote islands I mean I love the Highlands, outer and inner hebrides.....I'd love to explore eigg ..foula rona but I don't do water unless it's over a bridge 😆 nae ferries .... but honestly we have so much land so many places steeped in history it's unreal ....I'd love to visit the wee italian chapel on Orkney
This doesn’t look like Keswick…
London is the capital of England is this a joke ?

We drove the road to the Isles 4 weeks ago tomorrow...soo much easier to drive to Mallaig (Glenfinnan aside) than it was years ago before the road was upgraded. First time I went in 1989 it was single track most of the way after Lochailort. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks mate. It’s a brilliant drive. The road is fantastic compared to what it used to be.
Another great wee video such beautiful scenery ...I cannot wait to move further up scotland you're living my dream
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
I've always loved that bus journey - thanks for sharing it here. It's a shame it only runs twice a day, really - especially if they're using that bus, which I was briefly on 2 years ago, on Mull. It must be hell when it's full of tourists bound for Iona!! I've walked over the old Cregan Railway Bridge, as it also carried a footpath that remained for 20 or more years after the railway closed - then hitched a lift in a police range rover, as far as Ballachulish Bridge! I assume you know that the doctor's surgery in Ballachulish is a conversion of the old railway station? Also, the platform of the one at Ballachulish Ferry can still be seen behind the roundabout at the south end of the bridge - and the one at Kentallen is part of the hotel there?? Another, really scenic bus trip from Fort William is the weekday service to Kilchoan, incidentally. It goes over on the Corrran Ferry, then via Strontian and Acharacle... Connects with the last ferrry to Tobermory, too.
Thanks Paul, Its a very nice journey. Indeed I do, on one of my previous videos I pointed it out I think. Its nice to see they have kept that railway station theme very much alive in the building. I have not investigated the platforms at Ballachullish or Kentallen, however often walk my dog across the old Appin railway station, which is on the cycle path past castle stalker. Basically the cycle path from Oban to Fort William just runs on much of where the old railway line used to be.
@coasttocoast23 Ballachulish platforms have gone. Rails did extend into the slate quarry by the foot of the sloped rock surface. Kentallen station is actually built into the structure of the hotel - it's the bit with the semi-circular windows furthest from the road; as they built another bit in a similar style in front, then extended the whole thing again! Connel Bridge was purely a rail bridge as built - for the first few years, they ran a charabanc on them as far as Benderloch; then started the shared arrangement about 1913, I think. This lasted until closure - with road vehicles not allowed to cross at the same time as a train was doing so. It competed to a small extent with the Bonawe Ferry.
Done that in a motorhome its not that bad
Spectacular place to take a motor home Geoff 👍
@coasttocoast23 trick is keep your eyes closed let the wife drive
@@geoffpriestley7310 🤣🤣
Good value for a scenic trip.
Have travelled this route many times, but not by bus, since the late 70's. It is interesting how the route has evolved to take up, in places, the route and bridge of the railway. Also how a lot of the hillside tree plantations are now gone, the views steadily changing with the years.
Most risky thing is letting your tyres drop off the tarmac: those sharp edges will shred the inner wall 😬
Don’t miss castle arghh from monty Python. Go by car. If Oban is packed pop back to poppies and get a wonderful view of dunusfage marina whilst having lunch.,
