Most Spectacular Drive in Scotland? Most Spectacular Drive anywhere.

Travelled through there from Tyndrum, Rannoch Moor must be one of the most barren but beautiful spots I have ever travelled through. Love the A86 and the town of Kingussie. Nearby Ruthven barracks is one of my favorite spots on this earth, just nice memories of that location...

When read this question i think back to an episode of Top Gear, Jeremy said through the BBC had went on the search for the Worlds Best Road and was shocked to find out that it was right here in Scotland. That comment i remember and i also remember it's popularity after he did. Edit: I would love to know what those numpties are doing digging a trench down the middle of it, if connecting anything, connecting what to where? can't understand it as looks like the same set of idiots that laid all the city fiber, same purple pipes.

I could have watched you driving along there for hours.... video was over just as getting in to it. When get bored i do Dundee to Inverness as at just over 2hrs, just along the road really.

My favourite place on the planet! Used to drive through Glencoe once a week in my lorry, it never looks the same with the ever changing light. Just watch for the deep potholes in the laybys which are often full of water.

If that tanker slipped on the bend going that speed you were a goner. My heart skipped a beat.

Glencoe is very beautiful (I have only ever driven through it!) but being only a few hours from Glasgow it can get really busy. There’s some really beautiful hidden gems if you get off the beaten track. Great video though the snow capped mountains always get me in the feels!

Two hours from Glasgow isn't really that remote... It's why so many tourists visit it each year.

Wow. So beautiful. I don't think I'll ever get to Scotland ... but a large part of my heart lies there, courtesy of my forebears. We don't even get any snow where I live! Apart from the huge mountains, I love the escarpments - those slopes - 18:45 - truly breathtaking. I even love the bridges, sturdy stone structures. Thanks so much ♥♥♥

My favourite bit of Glencoe is a wee patch of grass at the foot of Buchaille Etive Mor - just opposite the wee climber's hut, by which there are (were?) stepping stones over the River Coupall. This was the site of my first-ever camping expedition in 1974, to which we travelled in my uncle's Jaguar - that got parked in an infomal parking area next to the road. It was also my first visit to that part of the Highlands, and to Oban, etc. I wish they'd demolish the grafitti-covered cottage formely owned by you-know-who. It is an eyesore - and even in this negative way, he doesn't deserve to be remembered. Also, the Three Sisters Stretch, which is so dramatic! Of course, you enhance everywhere you go, Liam - thanks again for sharing so expertly!

Great scenery.

As you found this weather is hazardous. Cold air from the mountains drops into the bottom causing frost pockets and freezing fog. It can also get very wet and windy. Once came up the Glen in wet, windy weather on a motorcycle at about 50mph and the rain was passing me in big wet globs. Lucky it stopped by the time I got to the Green Welly. Where the 'new' road runs over the river and by the pipers falls the original course of the road is to the west and above coming down from the right and away to the left 1/2 mile either side of the climbers (Hamish Macinnes) cottage.

You're right about the light. Its is muted and soft, like in the paintings of Scotland we have on our walls here at home. 55:22 is my favourite view - expansive, with the hills and cloud in the distance. Beautiful, thank you.

Thank-you. It is just over 50 years since my one trip along that road at the age of 10. Cluanie Inn looks about twice the size, but apart from that, it's all much as I remember it!

The beer delivery artic from Lochcarron gets over. It's protected by Armco barriers so not that dangerous?

I've driven this route a couple of times and it really is quite spectacular... Great video.

Word of warning, there is only one fuel stop plus one electric between the two towns, however many eating places. @ 11:00 turn left, turn right onto old road for view down on castle. this road is 4 sheep wide(Hamish Macbeth set). @24:20 old road to right, to Loch Gary, now flooded, to due to building two hydro electric dams @41:43 old road from right, from Loch Gary. @46:30 trees on right shaken by passing aircraft slipstream, mid 80's

our taxi tour guide does it in the opposite direction, crosse the bridge and we come back via the glenelg ferry,

£18 return is brilliant! Glad to see you promoting public transport: made me wonder whether these buses pass close to Youth Hostels? Or maybe make connections with local buses / trains that could take travellers closer to them? Could they take a few bikes in the hold?

Sitting in Nevis Bank inn, you see the Glasgow to Uig busses passing. That must be an 8 hour journey

Just watched it again 🙂 The music's great too. Have you ever wondered why it is called Applecross? I have been enchanted by that name, but do not know its origins, I'm sure it has nothing to do with apples! ... The road reminds me of our Desert Road in NZ, which has a similar barren, snow landscape, and drops down to a lake (loch) - Lake Taupo. But that is SH1 - our main highway, so not quite so challenging for drivers. We have 3 mountains (volcanoes), but not like yours .... I think your video of the road to Loch Etive is the best, most beautiful .... that is how I came to your site. 🙂

Wonderful - but you seem to go v fast - is the film sped up or is it just a trick of the camera? And how do drivers know to pull off when someone is coming in the opposite direction, you can't always see ahead, can you? Thanks so much 🙂

Here is a tip for drivers who have never been there, so of course on one track roads use the passing places to allow cars coming towards you to pass, most people understand that, but the passing places should also be used to allow traffic behind you to get passed you if you are slow moving. So for example if you are a campervan and you are labouring up the steep incline with a large queue of traffic crawling behind you, the etiquette is that you should just pull into a passing place for 45 seconds and let the traffic get passed you. Even if you have one car behind you who is looking to get passed, just pull in and let them get passed. Many visitors are either not aware that this is expected or are unwilling....there is no room for any competitiveness or thoughtless driving on these roads, it causes frustration, especially for local drivers. Drive safe and be thoughtful towards your fellow road users.

We drove the road to the Isles 4 weeks ago tomorrow...soo much easier to drive to Mallaig (Glenfinnan aside) than it was years ago before the road was upgraded. First time I went in 1989 it was single track most of the way after Lochailort. Thanks for a great video!

I've always loved that bus journey - thanks for sharing it here. It's a shame it only runs twice a day, really - especially if they're using that bus, which I was briefly on 2 years ago, on Mull. It must be hell when it's full of tourists bound for Iona!! I've walked over the old Cregan Railway Bridge, as it also carried a footpath that remained for 20 or more years after the railway closed - then hitched a lift in a police range rover, as far as Ballachulish Bridge! I assume you know that the doctor's surgery in Ballachulish is a conversion of the old railway station? Also, the platform of the one at Ballachulish Ferry can still be seen behind the roundabout at the south end of the bridge - and the one at Kentallen is part of the hotel there?? Another, really scenic bus trip from Fort William is the weekday service to Kilchoan, incidentally. It goes over on the Corrran Ferry, then via Strontian and Acharacle... Connects with the last ferrry to Tobermory, too.

Done that in a motorhome its not that bad

Good value for a scenic trip.

Have travelled this route many times, but not by bus, since the late 70's. It is interesting how the route has evolved to take up, in places, the route and bridge of the railway. Also how a lot of the hillside tree plantations are now gone, the views steadily changing with the years.

Most risky thing is letting your tyres drop off the tarmac: those sharp edges will shred the inner wall 😬

Don’t miss castle arghh from monty Python. Go by car. If Oban is packed pop back to poppies and get a wonderful view of dunusfage marina whilst having lunch.,
