This is a useful video for anyone planning to travel this type of road for the first time who isn't sure of the protocol. As a single driver, it's good for me too because I get to see the scenery. Thank you. As I sit here comfortably watching your videos I'll get the shock of my life when I see my car approaching me!

Amazing. You actually found it working when you needed it!

There’s one very short length of dual carriageway on Mull, near Glenforsa , at about 37.00, but both sections are still single track.

The road from Carnoch Bridge near Strontian to Lochaline, and many of the roads on Mull were reconstructed in the 1960s. We tried to ensure that drivers could see at least two lay-bys at any one time, and made them a reasonable size. The bridge at 6.09 was designed by a friend and colleague, and a nearby one by me.

Like most highland roads you need to 'read' the road. Passing places are mostly positioned for a purpose other than passing. They indicate a blind bend or brow, ignore and your in the ditch or worse and its a long way to a garage or hospital. If in doubt follow a local or postman. Also if you want to see the scenery get off the road and stop and not in a passing place. In season when there are a lot of tourist coaches they have there own one way system round the isle so they do not approach head to head, most passing places are only one coach long. I have been a number of times over the years as day trips from Fort William. Because of the scale of the place, it is a problem of is it a Buzzard close up, Golden Eagle middle distance or Sea eagle far away? There also a lot of sea creatures, in season, to see, Basking shark in late summer, small whales, otter, etc..
But you can not see everything in a day. So a lot of day trips, A week will give you much, Two weeks will give you most.

Thanks for comment Brian, I think buzzard, but I have seen many Sea Eagle over there. Haven’t seen a golden yet in Morvern. I’ve seen them in the Cairngorms. Majestic creatures!

I’ve driven across much of the western Highlands and the islands and you have to adapt to the style of driving. That’s not a problem provided you can reverse! Mull though is terrible to drive on. The roads are in a very poor state and there is a reasonable volume of traffic at holiday times. I would never take a car there these days unless I absolutely had to.

Agreed, some of the roads are in a shocking state. If I lived there I would definitely own a 4x4. I managed to avoid many tyre busting potholes. I’m sure many tourists have fell victim to the roads there.
