    When the Ford Ecoboost Mustang was unveiled, Chevy responded quickly with the 2.0 turbocharged 4 cylinder Camaro. With the V6 base model gone - it was a very weird transition in the muscle car world. However throwing on a big turbo on a 4 cylinder Chevy Camaro to 450HP to the wheels is something truly strange. So let's go for a drive in this fully built 4CYL Camaro and see what it's all about!

      My opinion on the 4 cylinder muscle/pony cars is that they are clearly very capable vehicles, but they don’t fit the class of vehicle as far as I’m concerned. Another thing is that one of the reasons I’d buy a muscle car is for the sound and a 4 cylinder, even when modded like this, doesn’t meet that requirement.

      This car is sweet! I’ve always thought that Chevrolet missed the boat when they green-lit the 6th-Gen Camaro instead of their Code 130R concept with the Ecotec I-4. That car would’ve been way better than a 6th-gen. All my life, I’m only owned 4-cylinder cars, so I’m biased AF. I say “welcome to the club, Camaro!” Camaros, in current form, are just too porky and have lousy windows. This type of engine conversion would be more appropriate in the far lighter 1967-1968 versions of the Camaro, though. I like the sound of this engine; it lacks the dopey, mouth-breathing, lumbering bellow of an American V-8. That’s a good thing!

      you get stock v8 power with less low end torque from a tuned 4 cyl while spending more money. the v8 leaves so much more room for mods and sounds better. not easy to see why people aren't super big fans of the 4 cyl. a stock v8 would be more reliable, sound better, and then you could make way more power later

      @chrisgonz19 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Grant Winburn but you're forgetting the main point. Forget the v8. Forget the new mustangs and camaros are muscle cars and just look at the ecoboost. Building cars is not about "well this is a better option" its about working with what you have. Is the v8 better? Well duh but that wasnt the point

    • @169abr
      @169abr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chrisgonz19if that’s what you have that’s fine, work with it, the ecoboost is fragile and is the 2.0 in the Camaro and that’s why it’s not a good option. Big build ecoboosts start with a Focus ST block and stroke it to 2.3 to make the bigger power numbers and they had to build the bottom end for 450whp. They’re commuter engines, and by the time you’re making V8 power the price is the same if not more than the V8. If you want a little bolt on commuter car they’re great for that but there’s things that aren’t worth the money and a big horsepower Ecoboost isn’t it.

    For what it's worth, the Camaro still has the V6, too. The 2.0T truly was meant as a base, rental-spec engine option. If GM went the same route as Ford and axed the V6 I think we would have ended up with a stronger base to start with in these. It's a bit of a shame we won't ever get to see GMs newer 2.7T in Camaro form.

    • @sugerhitman1295

      The LTG engine is built like a race engine...it was never meant to be a rental car....I think Chevy was trying to steal customers away from sport hatchbacks as theres a huge customer base for 4 banger turbos and the Tuner crowd....The 4 banger Camaro is a full on sports car.

    • @deegan727
      @deegan727 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe for the Camaro the 2.0 was base, but I had a Cadillac ATS with the 2.0T. The 2.5 NA 4 cyl was base for the Cadillac with the V6 being the “top” tier. When comparing the stock hp/tq numbers I chose the 2.0T and on top of that it has a pretty decent aftermarket compared to most 4 cylinder platforms. I don’t consider the 2.0t a base/rental engine.

    No different than an EB Mustang and there's nothing wrong with both. I think it's great that there's entry level options into both platforms. What is surprising to me, is the amount of work required for reliability at 450 wheel. I would suspect that is a huge reason why no one chooses to mod these unlike the Mustang. Aftermarket support aside, the Ecoboost can handle 450 wheel fairly reliably, and usually only a Upgraded turbo, intercooler, and fueling is needed to get there. Having to spend all the extra money and time to build the ecotec is a bummer. At that point it's probably better to get a v6 Camaro and slap a turbo on it than to spend equivalent money to build the ecotec.

    I've always been a fan of both Chevy and Ford's four-cylinder turbo engines. More so the Ecoboost, because it harkens back to the days of the Mustang SVO, but both platforms are very overlooked by most enthusiasts, because they don't have V8s.
    And don't get me wrong, I love the Coyote and the LT1, but the Ecoboost and Ecotec engines work quite well in these platforms.
    Think of the 2.3 Ecoboost as a modern interpretation of a Mustang SVO, because really, that's what it is.
    Think of the 2.0 Ecotec as a modern interpretation of Pontiac's Sprint Six engines.
    It's a bit of a stretch, being handicapped by two cylinders, but the idea is the same; less power, better handling.
    If you haven't ever actually driven either a 2.0 Camaro or a 2.3 Mustang, do it. You'll likely think differently of them than you do currently.

    I can't speak for the earlier ones, but my 2019 2.0T Camaro has yet to have any mechanical issues at 67,000 miles so far. Haven't exactly babied it either, hahaha. The stock version of the motor is unusual for a modern turbo-4, with a lot more top-end whooosh and some turbo lag before that. Polar opposite of the EcoBoost Mustangs and BMWs it competes with, which have beefier midrange and less at the top. Go test-drive one -- it's a much more '90s tuner car experience than any other boosted car on sale these days.

    I honestly wish the turbo 4 Camaro and Mustang were not Camaro's and Mustangs. Some fascia changes and a different name would make a lot of people think more highly of the Turbo 4 Models. What if the 2.0T Camaro was styled slightly less aggressive and called Chevy Monte Caro/Lumina/Beretta whatever. A slightly differently styled Mustang only available with the turbo 4 would make a great new Probe or Capri.

    Thanks again David for the great review and coming to the shop. I hope this gives some people with the LTG Camaro to have some fun.
    I think that one of the commenters said it best, the 4 cylinder Camaro is best when looked at in a vacuum. Imagine this: GM announces that they're coming out with a new fun vehicle. RWD, turbo with good power, available manual, available LSD, 50/50 weight distribution, relatively light (>3400lbs). They would be revered and people would love it. However, because it the Camaro name attached people hate it. Yes, there's always going to be the V8 version available, yes there's always a better option out there; however, for people who can't afford the V8 or want better gas mileage (The LTG version will get +30mpg on the highway with premium) or whatever they may want, it's not a great platform to have some fun with.

    Back when the original Mustang SVO with the turbo Lima (along with the T-Bird Turbo) came out, those cars made a lot of sense to build considering they made similar numbers to a stock 5.0L. They are still very cool as far as 80s Fox bodies go.
    But now the whole point of these smaller engines is the value proposition. If you're going to spend nearly as much money as the difference between the base and SS to build a turbo 2.0L up to SS levels, that's thoroughly pointless unless you're just trying to be different. Kudos to the creator of this one though, it looks pretty well done even with the auto.
