A 600HP Chevy Cobalt SS is a Type R's Worst Nightmare

  • ZZperformance who has mastered the Ecotec engine platform was kind enough to throw me the keys to "SNOBALT" - a 600WHP front wheel drive monster that would even make a Dodge Neon SRT-4 blush. After driving a Chevy Cobalt SS with ZZperformance bolt ons as well as the Saturn Ion Redline - I figured we could take this platform to the limit and see just how great the ecotec is when you have a blank check. So let's go for a drive and see just how gnarly this beast is.

The HHR could be lumped into the same conversation too. I think you can still find decent examples of them out there, at a non-2022 collector car price. Hardest part, is fine one that's not clapped-out or heavily modified (there are lots of them that were done by owners with different tastes that were well...questionable). This is the same story with a Focus ST or RS, or an oldschool SVT Focus.

It doesn't get much easier to make reliable power than the LNF/LHU platform. Factory wideband ECU, easy to tune boost control and since you can use an LT4 HPFP you can push the DI system to 600hp on E85. It is a hell of a capable platform.

The only thing I remember about the Cobalt was it was a Supercharger instead of a Turbo in the game. In 2004, my buddies and I went to an Import Tuner event in San Diego, where we’re from. This event was epic! It was pinnacle car culture in the States! This is when Import Tuner mags were seen in every grocery and convenience store.
Anyways, it was awesome, but the event staged an autocross course, and they had brand new Cobalt SS Supercharged vehicles that you could go drive a lap on, at no cost. It was free! So we all did it. I immediately fell in love with this car. I always wanted one, but I could not afford it. Time has passed, and I’ve had several other sweet cars, but never this one. I’ll always remember that day, and maybe if prices ever come down, I’ll pick one of these up. But yo pay over $10k for one now makes no sense to me.
