In real life, they wrote the Father James out the show, killed him off, because the show went from real life like this to focusing on JJ with just silliness. 'James' complained about it and then they canned him Sad.

Thelma had a lot of controversial boy friends. This guy, the 42 year old divorced guy, the Nigerian guy with a harem of wives back home, the auto mechanic who wanted to take her to California. Even the guy she married ended up living off the family for a few years with a bum leg until he recovered and finally got a football contract.
