JJ was always scared shittly of his father but this is one of the few times I seen him stand his ground against James, feel confident in what he said and the points he made, and defended his sister without disrespecting anyone. He even acknowledged that his fathers points were valid because he is head of the household but still defended his sister. I thought that was beautiful.
JJ may have been a goofball sometimes but when it came to standing up to James, he wasn’t goofy a bit and I think that even Thelma was amazed at the way her big brother stood up for her!
Another episode involved JJ willing to leave the Evans apartment because James had a beef with a guy (whose residence JJ stayed at) who was impressed with JJ's art skills.

I absolutely missed " James Evans" when he left the show !! I understand his point of view but J.J. makes a good point too !! Even though he was about to "Die" I was proud of J.J. for speaking his mind !! 👍
Out of all the episodes I watch I remember this episodes the most. To stand up to your father when you know he is wrong, even under threat of a beating.
Today James Evans would be considered a "BROKE DUDE" and most women would NEVER give that Brotha a shot. Yet he was a family man always grinding with character & growth
He probably started out fine and they had dreams of leaving the ghetto. 3 kids later and losing jobs, long periods between jobs, things change. They got stuck.
You know that most people would have been PROUD to have a father like that! In the episode that he died in and afterwards, the true importance of his absence was felt. What we in society have now are mentally LAZY people with broke morals, broke education, and quite literally, no ambition or desire to better themselves. It just proves the old saying, "those who ignore their history are doomed to repeat it."

that’s how it was done in our families. But most of us grew up with great morals and integrity. We also learned not to let anyone push us around. You noticed the n the end James did calm down
IIRC this episode took place not long after the episode in which Thelma planned to marry an older man (played by Louis Gossett IIRC) but was not able to tell him, especially in front of the family that she loved him. Now she's able to say she loves someone. I think James should've been more understanding.

It's funny there was an episode when JJ's date's parents disapproved of him because he was a poor boy. James called them out on saying they were snobs. But we see James doing the same thing with Thelma telling her she gonna marry a doctor.
It makes you wonder, if Thelma and Larry were married, would he stayed longer on Good Times, on would they split up or would he had been killed off like they did James ?
The big brother still gets the scolding, so did my big brothers and big sister, but I'm the youngest, and I feel like I was the most raised, I was the bad boy.
