- Bern Nadette Stanis certainly opened the door for generations of Black actresses who followed in her footsteps. But, being the first, isn’t always easy. In a digital-exclusive interview with TV One, she shares how her on-screen mom, the late Esther Rolle, advocated for her and gave her character a voice, which created space for the only Evans daughter to blossom throughout the legendary series. Still gorgeous. I had the privilege of meeting her at FT Eustis, VA, when she was promoting her book on Alzheimer's awareness. She was very nice, and beautiful woman. GOD bless her.
I met her there as well. She was very lovely and kind. She took pictures too with everyone. When I was walking in I was on the opposite side her table was set up at and I happened to look up and over her way. I was like, Thelma😂😂. Ill stop by on my way out. Then I called a few people to tell them she was there. I bought all 3 of her books, got a picture, and Thank her for being an inspiration to our culture. She a Beautiful woman.

But it was on my cell phone, and the pictures I took with her are gone :(. , But I have the autographed copy of her book, about her caring for her mother with Alzheimer's. It was so funny, because as I walked through the Front entrance to the BX store, I happened to look to my left, and did a double take, before I noticed her. It was funny, cute, because I was like "OMG, you're Thelma", and we both laughed, lol. 😊

Bern Nadette has such an easy beautiful spirit. It's heart-warming to hear the way Esther Rolle successfully advocated or her visibility and quality of character on Good Times. 🥰
That show started when I was just 10 years old, me and my family never missed an episode up until the day it ended. That last episode still makes me cry to this day. There were so many relatable themes in the show, especially growing up in the ghetto in DC . Just like the Evans family, there were days we had no heat, and the bowl of oatmeal for breakfast happened many days.
I remember watching Good Times as a kid and always thought Thelma was so gorgeous!! And still is!! 😍

The more I hear about Esther's interactions with the writers and producers for Good Times, I come to respect her even more. I already knew how she felt about the JJ character, and what she did about that, but I had never heard this before. She was a strong, black woman that didn't waver in what she knew was right. R.I.P to the late, great Esther Rolle.

@AngelHoll She was 20 when the show premiered in February 1974. Jimmie Walker (JJ) was 26, and Ralph Carter (Michael) was 12. The actors who portrayed their parents, John Amos (James), was 34, and Esther Rolle was 53. This is similar to the age gap between the leads of _The Jeffersons_ (Isabel Sanford was 21 years older than Sherman Hemsley). And Ja'net DuBois (their neighbor Willona) was 41 at the time of the taping for season 1 began.

Good Times was not my fav show as I felt Sanford & Son and The Jefferson's were much funnier, but the first glance at her wowed me with her beauty. To me, she was right up there with Dorothy Dandridge , Vivica Fox, and Olivia Brown. She is still stunning .

I met Bern Nanette maybe 15 or 16 years ago by chance.. Very short exchange, she was absolutely lovely.
Compared to the other family sitcoms from the 70s, Bernadette was probably one of the youngest black women in her age group to have such a long run in a sitcom television and on CBS. Think about The Brady Bunch where you had 3 young girls to captivate the screen, there was only one girl on Good Times to represent the young black girl on screen. That's a remarkable feat at a time when there were far fewer parts for young Afro-American women then compared to now! Bravo, Bernadette!!!! Bravo!!!!!! Shout out to the Good Times cast, we love you all!!!

I remember at one of the CIAA games i got to see this woman i grew up watching in person signing autographs. I couldn't believe i was witnessing Thelma in person. This woman is one of the most memorable beauties in tv history.
