The only about is that James held the family back with a 6 grade education who is somebody that has absolutely no education I hate to say it but Norman Lear was right in getting rid of James
What is an example of a good tv father? Giving life lessons? Being a strong figure that people can look up to? Not overly goofy but truly deep in thought when disciplining the tv children? When I watch tv shows of today, I noticed that some of the families don't have a father figure to lead a family. They're either mentioned and not seen physically or passed away in the beginning of the show. Same thing with mother figures. In place of the absent parent, an aunt or an uncle comes in and help raise the kids.
I agree with you, these today's teen- age a-holes need a father like James Evans if they have a father like him, they wouldn't get out of line, messing up
Good Times was never the same after James Evans departure from the show. But the producers finally got their wish, because according to Esther Rolle, they initially wanted her to be a single mother, but she insisted on there being a Father in the house.
Wrong!!! Jimmie walker and bernadette are the heart and soul of good times thier back and forth made the sitcom worth watching john was ok but jimmie and bernadette were the star's!!!
@@moetolove Yeah I know. I think it had something to do with him constantly getting upset at the writers for wanting to continue to make Jimmie Walker a stereotype. Esther left the show for the same reason, but they eventually talked her into coming back for the final season.
I agree. The way Norman Lear fired John Amos was cowardly. John Amos showed up to do season 3. That's when he was informed, he was fired. It's ironic, because after John Amos was fired. They toned down JJ's buffoonery. Norman Lear was just being honoree and didn't want to listen to a black man.
This is one TV show I looked forward to seeing all the characters felt real w real problems and GOOD TIMES day by day, I grew up poor and I could relate to them.
yup and its a real shame. John wanted the show to stay conveying a positive message to set the standard for black viewers, but Lear just wanted the show to be about JJ acting a bafoon the whole time, so Amos left the show and Lear killed off his character in the weakestway possible, smh.
John and eslle sorry if I spelled it wrong both left the show because it was going into the JJ comedy show and they both didn't want that remember she was gone for about two whole seasons
Rest In Power to Veteran Actor, Writer, Golden Gloves Champ, and US Army National Guard Veteran John Amos (1939-2024). You will be sadly missed, Good Sir.

I loved this show so much growing up. James was the Dad I wished I had but didn’t. He always put his family first. He was kind and tough. I was 10 when James died on the show and I cried my eyes out.
James Evans could never get a break in life due to him not having an education. He had the ultimate chance to get a break when his cousin offered him a partnership in his garage business but he wind up getting killed in a car accident.
If every single woman had a man like James that would take charge of a household it would be a lot more stability in America right now, most fathers today have turned into wimps with the mothers running the show
If they would have listened to him, the show would have tanked. Whether it's JJ, Fresh Prince, Arnold Drummond or Steve Urkel. Sitcom clowns is what sells..
James was definitely a Role Model for both J.J and Michael!! A man who loved his family and believed in education and pushes his kids that School is their way of of the GHETTO!! This show was 1 of my favorites!! Much Love to the entire Cast💗🤍💟🤍💗
My Dad once told me that he looked up to James when he was younger during Good Times' original run on CBS....turned out to be JUST LIKE him, and I can honestly say he's the reason I turned out the way I did.
James Evans may have died in 1976, but today we lost John Amos.
RIP.
When I saw this man on TV I saw my own dad. Same mannerisms, same age, everything. May this legendary actor John Amos rest in Powerful peace🙏🏾💔🌹🕊️
James was strict but he defended his wife and kids something fierce!
Damn Right!!!🫡💯🫡

Rest in power to a wonderful tv dad. Thanks for the Good Times!!!!!

Nah...Uncle Phil from Fesh Prince. James had to much of a temper and too much of a misogynist.

Fred Sanford

He stayed with his family to the end ! He never ran out!

That's the bare minimum...once you FORCE a child into this world you're supposed to take care of them. The bar is set really low for black males
He was supposed to
"Yeah, well I'mma have to work out an understanding with the Lord some other time Florida." 😂😂😂
SHE insisted a " Man " be in the house !!! What a good concept .
One of my all-time favorite tv dads!!!!!
Good times wasn't the same when he left
John Amos/James Evans best father portrayal hands down! Loved this show!
James Evans is the most realistic Dad on television IMHO. He is a loving, devoted father but also a strict disciplinarian - so needed today.
James is the father we all need today. Our youth is lost today because we don't have men .
Well start with those in the house first
And the type of men women marry
I think the only time I ever cried over a TV dad death is when James Evans died.
Rest peacefully: John Allen Amos, Jr. (1939-2024), Esther Elizabeth Rolle (1920-1998), and Jeannette "Ja'Net" Theresa DuBois (1932-2020)
Ja'Net DuBois was born either 1932 or 1945 but does anybody know for certain exactly what's the right year that she was born in?????
James evans and uncle Phil were the best
This dude looks and reminds me of my old man. Lost him a few years back I get a good laugh everytime I see these old clips.
R.I.P to a prominent TV father figure that alot of kids need these days.
James Evans was proud to see his youngest son Michael singing When You're Young And In Love

That sadly was John Amos' last episode.

Florida should have been grateful. All James wanted to do is take care of his family
Actor John Amos was fired from Good Times in 1976 due to a situation between him and Norman Lear
Shame on Lear.
He was unhappy with the direction of the storyline. It was becoming the JJ show
The best thing to happen to him. In 1977 John Amos the adult Kunta Kinte in Roots and his career took off
