@tamakit123 It is definitely tough to understand and "feel" odd time signatures at first. In regards to why your metronome sounds a lot faster in 5/4 than it does in 4/4, my only guess is that you are actually setting the metronome to 5/8, not 5/4.
No....maybe. It really helps to know where you are or where someone is starting or whatever. I was in Band class and I can't read music (although I can play damn near anything), I always just memorized it because I would hear the damn song so many times. But there were songs that I had to pay attention and I had to at least try to read....like this part where it was accented 16th notes going from 9/8 to 5/4 and back again. Counting isn't necessary, but if you can, you already have an edge.
@TripleFermentation ty this makes a little more sense I'm trying to understand timing and everything like i know the idea but when it comes to something like this i just don't get it like idk i know what 5/4 is but why is that like i think to hard on it lol ty!!!
@TripleFermentation it says 5/4 idk il look at it again lol but i was learning piano for the theory of everything and uhhh.... didn't work out to well lol
Because he stated the influence of the 5/8 and 7/8 ideas were from Steve and...Steve. I know it seems like he's wary of crediting Gavin due to the amount of exclamation marks, but english is not his first language and he might have trouble articulating his message and it might come off rather arrogant. Hannes is a nice guy, and I'm sure he appreciates Gavin's work.
@tamakit123 If your tempo is staying the same (ex. 120bpm), the speed of the quarter notes should be the exact same for both bar-types, and the 5/4 bar should be one quarter note longer than the 4/4 bar. Here are how 4/4 and 5/4 bars look, respectively (16th notes being shown): | 1xxx2xxx3xxx4xxx | 1xxx2xxx3xxx4xxx5xxx | If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM :)
Nice to see even a proffesional drummer dosnt seem to get over the excitment of sitting behind a kit..He keeps glancing back at it like hes dying to play :P
NO it's not dood, Dom Famulero even tells his students to rip beats from him and make it your own. Everybody rips from everybody that's part of the beauty of music to hear something you like, rip it and apply your own taste to it.
I figure he is assuming that when someone buys a dvd set up for odd time Sigs, for progressive music, that he/she would already know the basic fundamentals of drumming.
jw on a metronome why is 5/4 so freaking fast but 4/4 isn't (I'm still learning about timing and a lot more with music I'm trying to learn theory but no one can put it into simple terms for me)
@pkfjr3671 To actually state that something has been stolen means that someone has to own that specific thing, how the hell can anyone "own" a musical beat. They can't , then can recreate that beat and add their own variations to it, but it can never be truly stolen.
11 = 5 + 6
You learnt here first folks.
Damn he's teaching how to play odd time signatures and teaching math he's a genius!!!!!
One of my favorite drummers ever! Him and Romain Goulon are the fucking shiznit yo!
this was exactly what I needed to see! great way thinking about it...
If they would have taught me this kind of stuff in school I would have taken a much greater interest in math! Thanks Hannes!
Thank you so much man!!! You just have me the solution to all me time signature problems!!!!
Hannes thanks for explaining this!. It really helped me a lot!
Yes! Thanks for the upload.
@SatanMcCool In his defense, he did say "by" and not "from". Awesome drumming by the way. I'll have a look if I can get your DVD around here.
Great Lesson!
Took me days to realize I have a top comment, glad to see that there are still some pratical thinkers in the world.
@shivsaxena It's not exactly a DVD for beginners, but there are already too many of those. This DVD seems really great for advanced drummers.
Please don't argue with Hannes.
For 5/8 You could also use the 2nd "1" as a rest and then use a quick and snappy fill for resolution then reset

OMG now my life makes sense!!

I deleted my first comment. I was confused. Haha. I'm sure he does. Hannes is a beast.

Was that new Blotted Science at the beginning?
Nice to see even a proffesional drummer dosnt seem to get over the excitment of sitting behind a kit..He keeps glancing back at it like hes dying to play :P
I actually understood some of this...
y douse hehave 1 black bass drum head and the other clear?

thx buddy

He doesn't count when he plays because the "counting" is just feeling now, but he still counts like a boss!
@SatanMcCool yes. just like how people think gospel drummers came up with linear fills. linear drumming has existed for years

Terrestrial Exiled - Duodecimal Levorotation
@riomariucci Cheers!
Lol at tha doo-rag tho
Love his drumming but I'm having a hard time with that
How come most of the best things are made in Germany? If not all of them.
love the style of drumming...also love the crack of that snare
check out this band for crazy time signature changes:
/watch?v=THojpRc7gSU
that may be, but im pretty sure this German that you are referring to as "nigga" said "you have to 'overcome' the counting..."
I should have said drum beat not musical beat.
Try to listen to some Balkan's etno music, like Macedonian, Serbian and Bosnian. Most of it is in 7/8 or 9/8.
He sounds kinda like Microsoft Sam
How was I arguing against hannes?
*gave
@Rammstein99 So every drumteacher is a thief ?
@WhiteWalls666 Lol
@BurnThePope0514 No shit...
It's not math, it's just counting :)
I didn't understand a thing
First!
this 5/8 and 7/8 ideas are stolen by Gavin Harrison, are'nt they !?
Saying drum beats can be stolen is ridiculous
Fucking maths :(
