    Side note, the beef in gelatine has almost no fat. The gelatine si the cooking broth condensed, nothing more. i have seen some people asking if it was fat in an other video about Italian MREs but it's actually very very light in calories, almost full proteins and carbs. (Source, that beef jelly can be found in any store in Italy, people here just put it in salads during hot days to avoid cooking).
    Btw nice video!

    Fun fact: the presence of alcohol in the Italian MRE is due to the geographic conformation of the Italian peninsula. Italy is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea, leaving just the northern mountainous regions for potential enemies to invade; that's why boozes were considered necessaries for soldiers, because they had to warm them up in case of mountain fights

    I served 12 months as a conscript in the Italian Army Mountain Warfare Troops and ate the MRE countless times (btw in the Italian Army they are called Razioni K), my favorite module included Pasta e Fagioli, dark chocolate, condensed milk and of course Cordiale. Cordiale was the only thing you could barter with cigarettes with your comrades. On a side note Canned Ravioli or Tortellini is something you cannot find in Italian food shops, they simply don't exist in Italy and to be sincere every Italian find them repulsive.

I kid you not, they are toying with the idea of (basically) methamphetamine laced juice in the morning menu and also adding 2.5 ounces of whiskey for dinner menu and/or a benzodizapine (Valium; 10mgs) laden juice drink to bring the solider down...

    Regarding alcohol in rations the Royal Navy supplied a rum ration to their crews for 300 years until fairly recently (stopped in 1970s), officers had theirs neat ABs had theirs watered down and mixed with lime to prevent hoarding up and subsequent gross drunkenness. Even the navy knew not to dole it out until noon! ... it was more generous than this Italian cordial. Sailors had the option of refusing it and being compensated monetarily, but most didn't. Anyway cigarettes were in Army rations until about the same time ('70s/80s?).

    After hearing what grappa is made of, I've never tried it - but it is supposed to be made from the seeds, skins and stems of wine-making grapes - basically the left-overs from making wine. Supposedly pretty coarse and unpleasant, unless of course you've become used to it over the years (I suppose).

      Misfit Tim You really can't go wrong. My only suggestion is don't get the chicken with noodles. It's just not good. Having some condiments to spice items up a bit would be good. I'd just look at the published menus on MREinfo and figure out which one contains most of the items that you like. There's something satisfying about starting with an unopened pack.

    It's quite quite posible that the cordial is intended to be drink with the coffee, is quite common to drink coffee and in special capuchino with a dose of liquor, if it's grappa, most likely intended to go with the capuchino

    Glad to see you back, and are well sir. Cordial intact? Rarity. I love Breakfast, but, well, that might help jump start my metabolism, LOL ! Remember dogs review, bad luck, Ouch. All items, all 3 meals did look good. Well, not exactly on the beef and gelatin, otherwise? LOL !! Tuna and beans, well questionable, from where I come from, LOL. Different, granted sir. That is one hell of A ration. And, they did divide meals, so you did not have to Awesome friend. Glad tuna and beans tasted good, I was unsure, sorry R.C.? Coffee that strong, wow ! Great review again, we enjoy your reviews, and all the others, here in this collection, of, people who enjoy reviews. Peace, John. P.S. I was going to say misfits, but, if we enjoy, we are not misfits sir. There are A lot of good people here, and appreciate all that everyone does. Why are MRE's so addictive to us? We share food, ideas, concepts, between countries. I believe this is good for all r.c. Nite, Peace, John.

      Actually, while alcohol will make you feel warmer, it actually lowers your core body temperature because the alcohol causes your blood vessels to dilate and this flushing moves the blood to your skin, but away from internal organs.In a very cold environment, even if this effect only lasts minutes, it can cause hypothermia. Plus alcohol can act as a diuretic causing dehydration if adequate water isnt available. My thought is this is added purely to give the Italian Soldiers a little taste of home when they are far from it. Alcohol is part of Italian food culture. I'm sure they aren't acting like giddy teens who scored 1/2 bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Wine on Prom Night.The booze is much like why the American MREs contain certain candies, drinks, and even some entrees that are not very nutritious by themselves, but to a guy or gal 5000 miles from home it fits the bill and staves off homesickness.

    • @rcgusto2427
      @rcgusto2427  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hikary Plays you can get US MREs for about $10-12 on eBay or Amazon. The international and vintage ones range from $40-200 depending on rarity

    • @HPKazan
      @HPKazan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's about health , I wouldn't eat Mre's everyday.... Not the most nutritious food out there. So often they contain way to much sugar and empty calories. (Nothing beats fresh and homemade foods you know.)
      Saying that, I'd be curious tasting an MRE still.
      The French and Russian ones , etc seem less trashy though.
      If it's about the cost , I have no idea.

    After seeing many MRE reviews, I have to admire the US flameless ration heater. It's so efficient and ideal, the portable stove seems a bit inefficient considering you would use more tablets to keep it burning. Plus having big cans like that seems like it would be a problem on the move. But that cordial is sweet.

    • @rcgusto2427
      @rcgusto2427  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Marth I'll be interested to see the new heaters that are in development--I've seen sticker heaters that do not require water.

    • @10191927
      @10191927 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RC Gusto - Sticker heaters? That's pretty efficient, kind of along the lines of a heat patch, but just for food. I bet with something like that you could have a couple heater patches as oppose to just one flameless ration heater.
      Not to mention for missions and recon or stealth type missions, a heating system like that would be invaluable, and not having to waste any precious water, and having to have a meal while remaining concealed in enemy territory.
