- The Spanish 24 Hour Individual Combat Ration consists of three separate packages, one for each meal. Certainly one of the more interesting rations I have had the opportunity to explore. The lunch A2 contained "Whole Stuffed Squid In Their Own Ink" as a side item. It was an experience to say the least.

I dig the fact they include oral hydration salts and the squid is more mental than anything else. If you grew up with it, it's just as common as a hotdog here in the states. Makes me glad I lived in Europe for 5 years really broadened my culinary horizons. Rock on RC!
Well you could trade it, as a squid pro quo.
A few comments from an usual user's perspective:
Actually, is more common to add the condensed milk to the cocoa drink, with more or less water, according to taste. In the older rations condensed milk came in a tube, with enough for the breakfast cocoa, and have the rest for a sweet snack along the day or adding to the coffee (from lunch and dinner boxes). The paté is spread onto the bread (crackers or the older style "long duration"), and quality is now lower than the older version.
Mess kit is issued to everybody (pocket knife, spoon and fork, plus the canteen cup), so no spoons in the boxes. Also, most people try to avoid the fuel tablets, since their smell clings to the food (gas stoves are some useful extra weight in your backpack). Someone should have warned Kiwidude about it ;-)
These new rations have less purification tablets (now only in the breakfast), gum, and vitamin tablets, not all of them have coffee, and there are a lot of powdered isotonic drinks (personally I hate those).
Wow the mains in that Lunch, and Dinner looked awesome. I think this video has changed my mind about these rations. I'd actually like to try one now.

Good to hear! BTW i guess you will know this, is it common for MRE's to have things like water purification tablets? or is it just a spanish thing?
carlosflar its very common in all rations. Never know if the waters safe in foreign areas
@@carlosflar Yep, pretty common and considered essential. One of the big things learned in history is the need for clean water to prevent diseases, which previously was as much a cause of death in wars as actual combat itself.
@@billmcyrus yeah but I meant it in a different way, for example, mres, imps, Epa or ORPs don't have water purification tablets, they are issued "on the side" but for the spanish army they are issued inside the ration, I have rarely seen rations that incorporate them... You can see it in the Italian rations too... Its the same but less common with stoves, most of the Armies include the heating element inside their rations but some will issue it on the side like Swedish army or the English

Hi RC, first of all great vid! It's understandable that you didn't really like the squid, in Spain we are used to eat a lot of any kind of ocean food so it's not that bad for us. I've heard that you say some food is really salty and I can tell you that you are right, we are used to add a lot of salt to pretty much everything haha
Ale Jimènez I absolutely love seafood, including squid. This particular item was just texturally not my favorite. Everything else in this ration was awesome
i must say that the pate didnt say with peppers, it said with pepper, or maybe a la pepper if thats correct. so yeah thats why the peppers werent discernible
Why make your channel so similar to another popular one? Why not possibly show your face and tray shot at the same time. Why not do something different? You even make the same sounds (stirring sped up)... come on man, make it interesting

I love your videos,always,every little bit from start to finish is well made and explained.
I do have one preference though,can you please just...eat a little bit more ? For example,dinner,peas and beef,you only took one bite,maybe i'm weird but i think eating a little bit more thus providing feedback after a few spoons would be a little better ?
My absolute favorite hot chocolate is cocoa beverage powder with some half and half. A cup of that before bedtime and you sleep like a baby. :-)
Good work as usual and +10 manpoints for tasting the squid in ink sauce I tired a similar dish to it in a Spanish restaurant lets just say its definitely an acquired taste and my friends were greatly amused.
As a whole, the Spanish are mad on seafood, well represented here. I'm of European extraction so am used to things like squid, if you can eat it it's highly nutritious. But the amazing thing is two mains looked great as well, really impressed.
Karl P this was an excellent ration. Right up there with my favorites. The pate was the best I've had. The A main was outstanding. The squid just had a texture that I didn't enjoy. I usually really enjoy squid, heck, any seafood. But as a canned item, I wasn't a fan.
Yeah, looked a bit rubbery. I think squid should only be served as Calamari (individual rings) otherwise you might think you were eating something out of a Michelin tyre catalogue.

Everyone freaking out about the squid. Why? Perhaps you need to develop your pallets, stevemre dived in and loved it!
Justsaying I love squid. I was more put off by the saltiness of the ink and rubbery texture.

Late answer but both, depends om taste, for a first time just heat it and if its too hard (chewey) leave it to coock for a bit and it will soften
You are very brave. I don't think I could have eaten the squid unless I was REALLY hungry.
jmtnvalley Squid is good when done correctly. Like any good fish that's prepared right, it shouldn't have any fishy smell or taste.
I love properly cooked calamari, but I have issues eating it with its guts included.
+Marth in Spain, if you cook fish and it doesn't have fishy smell or taste you have cooked it wrong.

A tip of the hat to you my good man, I don't think I could have tried the squid. But like Oldsmokey said below, seeing this and how MOST of the stuff looks great certainly makes me want to try some out.

As i watch this, im going to tell you some things, first off, as a friend of mine, whose father was in the military, told me you're not supposed do mix that breakfast hidartation powder with water.

Pote Gallego is the shit, really, look up the recipee, very easy to make.
The stove i used was a pain to deal with.
By the way, its peppered patèe.

That beef and peas we call it estofado, i love it, fairrly easy to make too

You realize that squid and calamari are basically the same word in diferent languages, right?. Calamari is plural of squid.. in italian...*facepalms
Well, the Spanish Army will have great teeth and clean hands but they'll all be asleep. How can you have three MRE meals with no coffee or even tea? In addition to being sleepy, I'd be pretty irritable too.
Some (most) menus have coffe, often in the three meals.
Love all the MRE reviewers but look forward the most to yours Gundog and Steve.
I woke up in middle of the night in severe pain as I shared I was in hospital. So happy hospital internet works well. After my knee replacement it is quite nice to hear yours and Steve and Gundogs voices as I find them soothing and help me get my mind off my limb that is in pain.

OSU Bucks421 I cut a lot of that because I rehearse what I'm going to say in that time, so I typically stop recording after I take a bite. The 24hr reviews take a really long time to shoot--usually about 4 hours, so cutting the dead air out as much as possible is essential.
I was giggling at the whispers in the background. Filming before a live audience is risky! *giggle* I'm glad they got to say, "bye bye" at the end! I'm assuming they are your nieces you've mentioned? Nice review. Re: the squid, I've noticed that people seem to be divided by sensitivity to textures, or lack thereof. I'm in the lack camp. ;)

I know what you mean, of course it is. Only rations I've ever consumed are the US ones, but they're my favorite in comparison with the international ones that I see on youtube.

That tuna in vegetable oil looks amazing.
smtpgirl it was top notch. Certainly better than the flaked up stuff we get here in the USA. Not that overpowering fishy flavor. And it was one large chunk of white tuna meat. Very good
This fish is actually albacore or how we call it, Bonito del norte. Is one of the best canned fish you can eat and it comes in glass jars too which are more tasty.

The squid would either be traded for some other entree or used to catch fish that I will eat. Everything else I would never put up my nose on. Even if I were starving. Cheers.
