    As a military personnel in Malaysia, I used to eat this before...curry n rendang mix better with rice, but rice was not included in this 2kg pack..it was given separately together with mini stove and solid fuel...

    Back in the 1990s, the Malaysian MRE were issued one to two soldiers. Basically, one ration pack per day to two soldiers. These ration packs are designed to be very high calorie because you burn them up like mad in the jungle. Even with such high calorie MREs supplemented with jungle foraging, you still come out of the jungle after 2 weeks, lighter than you were going in. If you ate them at home or camping, you put on the pounds quickly.

  • @lagubrok92
    @lagubrok92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Tracking and moving within ridiculously thick hot humid Malaysian jungle and forest really takes lots, and I mean really lots of your calories, glucose level n other shits in your body as compensations for the nature. I mean the forest here really are one of the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. Three times older than the Amazon for the fun fact. So i guess this pretty much explains about the generous contents in the Malaysian MRE.

    Somehow there is some confusion. as far as i know the ration is actually for 2 person. In the platoon you have buddy you need to share the load. I believe it is for 2 days ration for 2 soldiers hence 4 coffee, 4 tea bags, 4 creamer and lots of sugar. Thats why the load it huge. For gravy you only use one for a meal with rice which youshare it with your buddy, hence 4 packs of different gravies. I maybe wrong but that how I was trained long time ago. As i mentioned previously, MAF ration haven't change much since Malayan Emergency! The only thing not here it the orange juice powder.

      It were meant for a person, but the soldiers used to share their MRE so that it would last longger, a pack of those could fed 2 soldiers for a day, you could imagin if 2 or 3 or more of them choose to share their MRE... Usually MRE were eaten when the troops were on the move, in the jungle there are many sources of food, just need to know how to get them via hunting, trapping or fishing.

    Subscribed. My companion and I staying in Malaysia were wondering how the 'local' MREs looked like. She said it was a ridiculous variety of local recipes and really does look like the stuff served in local restaurants.
    Meaning to say this is the only MRE I've seen so far where the food actually looks "real" and not preserved to the point it barely resembles the original recipe when served out on a tray like that. That's A LOT of meat in those entrees.

    The pineapple jam and biscuits hv been a mainstay in Army rations. Back in the 80's, we usually turn them into yummy pineapple puddings. Crushed biscuits, pineapple jam and powdered milk mixed with water. Cooked in square mess tins over a hexamine fire. A heavenly dessert or breakfast for two in the hot and humid jungle, especially after a back breaking trek through the rain forest.

    I chuckled at the sugar. Its like its designed by an East Coast Peninsula Malaysian
    Typical Malaysian cuisine. Lots of sauce. I reckon it helps a bit by adding to the water intake, and less need to drink/find clean water. But 2 kg holy shit.
    But traditionally in SE Asia, war rations wouldve been lemang and dry rendang. Packed with calories and takes a long time to go bad.
    I think the "chutney" is what we call "Pajeri nenas" over here. Its a curry, and it has pineapple in it

Part of me is interested in what other countries manufacture for the different branches of their military, because no doubt a lot of feedback from enlisted native soldiers went in to the decision on what to include. But more importantly, there's a side of me that knows what it's like to be extremely hungry, cold, tired, etc, etc when you find yourself in a shitty situation, and looking at food which, to other people might look disgusting or undesirable, but in certain conditions is like being transported to heaven for a brief time

    Great video, a lot of food to get through! I've been to Malaysia many times (and I'm not just talking KL) most of the country is jungle, so I'm thinking it's maybe a ration for nearly three days? Jungle terrain is the hardest for re-supply so.. either way that food all looks great and is perfectly good un-cooked.

    a thing i learned was u can really go crazy with the menu, the biscuits u can make a nice caramel pudding with it. u out the biscuits in some sugar water, and heat it up to make caramel and the biscuits can expand and make like a cakey texture. really for good dessert . u can mix and match the biscuits with other stuff like chicken and fish. just use the same concept of letting the biscuit in the liquid so that it sucks up the curry juice then it becomes like bread and curry chicken haha. a lot of experimenting can go a long way especially when ur bored eating the it the normal way

    Thank you for the video😎 it reminded me when I join the army 23 years ago. Interesting info: the food pack is best served in hot, as fellow YT viewer @fiqkulim already mentioned, rice was separated. We use canteen cookware (a square metal fold able ware) to cook rice took about 15 mins, when the rice is almost done, we put 1 or 2 food pack (beef rendang, anchovies or the chicken) on top of the rice for heating up. Most of the time, we share the rations as we don't want too many soldiers cooking at the same time to avoid a sudden exercise call upon us. In other words, 1 pack of 2 kilos of MRE was actually good for 1-2 soldier serving in the field. Regards from Malaysia

    That's 2-man 1 day ration, just about enough in the field. It is quite fattening and I remember when we used to take home some to eat, we piled on the weight. However, in the field, going up and down hills in the jungle, we burn up the calories fast. It was never enough in the jungle and by the end of an exercise, even with those rations, we were quite thin. Good old days :)

    Back before retort packs they had these small cans of condensed milk, and sardines. Little bags of rice, too. I suppose the Japanese style precooked retort packs of rice haven't made it here yet.. you can actually buy those at Daiso and Family Mart. Rendang is sort of a reduced curry. Sometimes it's actually quite dry. The sambal bilis is meant to be eaten with rice - which is why it's so spicy.
