    According to the Coffee Lake diagram and the Intel Datasheet, it looks like that pin is either the VIDSCK or VSS_SENSE pin. Both are power / voltage management. It makes sense since the top left of these sockets are all power management related, so yeah it makes sense this is happening.

    • @EinhanderSn0m4n
      @EinhanderSn0m4n 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@EinhanderSn0m4n The pin was folded over the wrong way, it was probably contacting one, or more, of the other pins, that will definitely cause problems.
      It would be interesting to see how the board behaves now that the pin has been removed completely.

    • @shaneeslick
      @shaneeslick 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      So if that pin was touching another + or - when folded back it would be creating a problem for the CPU or a Short, Bad either way,
      🤔the Motherboard should work again without that pin as for each circuit there is usually more than 1 pin

    • @jarsky
      @jarsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@shaneeslick I dont think its shorting. All the pins in that corner are essential for this CPU, I think the lack of it means the CPU cant regulate the power therefor it initiates the power off.

      @@GregSalazar hey. i really enjoyed the whole playlist, it's really nice to see stuff like this (logical and methodical troubleshooting). i've been doing this for the roughly past 20 years for family and friends and others. one question though - why don't you use a speaker for the systems that don't show anything on screen. sure some have some fancy LEDs or stuff, but you can get so much for some simple beeps: for example: 1 short beep means usually stuff is fine and you just don't have image, no beep at all usually means cpu has an issue, long beeps and short beeps are for GPU and RAM issues (never seem to remember which is which but can google and usually manufacturers stick to same for newer boards also). and a small tip on cleaning: you can get a small / portable air compressor for better cleaning without taking stuff apart (ex radiators under fans) and you can use it in your garage.

    Wild. I had this exact same thing happen a few years back, and as soon as the video started I knew it was motherboard related. Mine had a short somewhere, but tracking a motherboard short is a nightmare. I had been through so much troubleshooting, and I'll tell you what, NOBODY I knew or called had any clue what I meant. Weirdly, Sometimes it would boot up, and work for days too. Then crash into this reboot cycle. I wish you'd ran into this problem then, it would have saved me a LOT of hair loss and stress 😬

      This happend to me too years ago. It turned out there was a case standoff already mounted in the case that was not supposed to be in that location for that motherboard. It was basically shorting the motherboard against the case. This can happen if someone first builds a PC and the case comes with the standoffs already preinstalled

    • @yankees4ever

    One time I wanted to change my thermal paste because I thought the pre-applied stuff that was on my AIO wasn't working very well. When I went to pull the cooler off the CPU, I pulled straight up rather than twisting first, and it and ripped the cpu right out of the socket. I then proceeded to clean everything up and act like that was normal and then I placed the cpu back into the socket. Everything seemed fine until I went to re-mount the AIO to the cpu, I noticed that it wouldn't sit flush no matter what I did. I ended up pulling the CPU and looking at the pins... sure enough when I ripped it out of the socket I damn near bent an ENTIRE row of pins. I then proceeded to have a mini freak out, calmed down, then grabbed a razor blade. Luckily with some concentration and patience, I was able to bend the pins back and get the cpu working again, and that Ryzen 5 3600 is still kickin it to this day!

    15:30 If you are at home and experience this. Use your phone macro/zoom camera and a pair of Kingston tweezers. I have saved a few boards with these.
    It is allot easier to 'pull' the pin back into place then to bend it back.

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it wouldn't have helped here. As explained in the video, the pin was so far bent that it compromised the material by thinning it out. Even with a microscope and optimal precision, the pin still would have snapped.

    This one was a very interesting. About when you ruled out the power supply I was like "wait a second, if it isn't the PSU maybe there is an issue with the CPU, is this like a bend pin issue?" I am not an expert by any means. Probably just a very lucky guess. But it made me kinda happy to actually have guessed the issue.

    Congrats on the first season, enjoyed every minute. With this problem I ran into this same issue over the summer. While I was away from my apartment, a thunderstorm struck and fried my motherboard. It had to go through my modem (fried) to my router (fried), to my ethernet port, all of which is now run through a ethernet surge protector. I returned home to see my PC flashing in the same way. Luckily I had spares to troubleshoot with, but I'd have been screwed had I not. This is a great service you're doing for people and I hope you can keep it going for a long time.

    Congrats on a great first season, and again, thank you for the help earlier with the video that had the CPU with the bad memory controller. I was able to rebuild that SFF PC and turn it into a great rig to take on the road with me. (5600g and a 3060Ti). Love your videos.

    This series has been great to watch because other people that build systems for either their own personal use or as a means to make a living have an opportunity to benefit from your experience. I've built enough systems to know what I'm doing but your videos give me ideas on things to check for when I have problems and I appreciate that. You also do a good job of making these relatively entertaining in addition to being informative.

It is very educational and entertaining and not something I've really seen on any of my other tech channels. Thank you for the episodes!
