as a computer tech, I've ran into this problem a few times. In my experience, a good place to check would be in the SATA operation in the BIOS. Make sure that RAID is disabled and AHCI is selected if RAID isn't supported. I've gotten that blue screen with INACCESSABLE DEVICE so many times lol, this has saved my life many times. It's not always the case, but just something good to check on the list.

Its more of a lack of PC knowledge and common sense. The owner spent all the money to make it look good but didn't add fans to provide air flow to cool components. Also the choice to go with an AIO if you are not savvy enough to identify a pump failure is a bad choice imo. Also wedging the block against the RAM is clearly not smart. Their is no such thing as luck, things happen for reasons.

    • @SiliconPower74

@@MrNota500 Agree, however a lot of brands overlook some parts of the desing that could end up with issues like...
Asus making those big VRM heatsink that are too close to the socket.
      NZXT with his nonsense USB.
Microsoft for not including the IRST drivers that almost every intel computer needs.
These issues are no challenge for a advance user but for lacking user, could be a wall that cant overcome

Might be best practice when working on a system repair to: first select "load default bios settings" (or simply clear the CMOS settings), re-boot, then double-check that the CSM setting is set to "off", and set to AHCI mode (instead of Raid mode). Raid mode setting should never default to "on".
There is a set of DOS commands that may be useful:
    1. Boot from the Windows installer USB thumb drive
    2. Navigate to CMD prompt
    3. Type "disk part"
    4. Type "select disk X" where X=disk number
    5. Type "clean"
Note: for system data safety, only have the one target drive connected, so as to not unintentionally mess with any secondary drive.

    • @Mave-rick
      @Mave-rick ปีที่แล้ว +1

Exactly. This reminds me of the transition from IDE to AHCI, Windows didn't have built-in AHCI drivers, so you needed a Floppy Disk or CD-ROM with AHCI drivers to install Windows. Neither Windows 10/11 have drivers for Intel VMD built-in, so before installation, as shown in the video, you'll need to provide drivers so Windows Install can see the drive you want to install to.

@Greg Salazar Hey Greg a couple of things about newer ASUS boards and the issues you were having. If you would have reset the BIOS it probably would have fixed your problems with the drive detection. The other thing you could have done is switched to EZMODE(F7) and turned Intel RST off (it is available in advanced mode but buried). This enables the RAID controller when on and all drives, including NVME, are under the RAID controller even when not set as a RAID drive. Most modern ASUS and Gigabyte (and probably others) motherboards don't show changes with certain items like drives until a reboot. If you were to turn off Intel RST the drive still would not show in BIOS until the reboot. Hope that helps if you run into similar problems in the future.

you might be missing drivers for the gen 4 ssds,
you can manually point to the folder the files are in if you put them on your install drive or a second flashdrive, or you can update your windows installation media, it might not have as up to date drivers installed, plus less updating when you are done.

12:20 my initial reaction the setting was on RAID instead of AHCI, this is something Dells are really bad at (since a lot of their laptops and at least older desktops) are installed with RAID by default. However some of the HP laptops I think are permanently stuck on RAID since there’s no option in bios
I typically always reinstall with AHCI even though there are some commands to covert from RAID to AHCI by booting into safe mode simply because fresh install+I don’t want to deal with it down the road. Love to see this happen in this series

The board is fine, Intel has a specified keep-out-zone around the socket where no components with a z-height greater than X can be placed, and the board obeys these rules. NZXT doesn't care and makes their pump block bigger than the keep-out-zone, so while ASUS has been taking many Ls lately, this time ASUS is not to blame. Yeah they could have left more space, but they're not obligated to, NZXT is at fault here.

Having recently faced this very same problem, I could have saved you some time. I too, like others in the comments thought it was a RAID issue, since I was transfering a drive that was part of an Optane Raid Array. Soon as I put that drive back into the original PC, it booted right up, but in the new PC I got the exact same issues you did. Turns out the fix was super simple. Turn off the stupid Intel Rapid Storage setting in the BIOS. Seems that if you don't have the driver installed in the OS (clean instal) it does not see it (wont boot from it). As soon as I turned off Rapid Storage in the BIOS, booted into Windows, installed all the mobo drivers and software, the problem went away. I could turn Rapid Storage back on in the BIOS and still boot without issue ever since. Also, like you, I had never seen this before. BIOS would see the drive, but any instillation software, and I tried MANY, would not see the drive at all.

I've encountered similar issues with M.2s a couple fo times. One tool I use is an external M.2 drive enclosure. When I get a drive acting like this, I'll take it out, pop it into the enclosure, plug it into another PC, and diskpart and clean the drive. That's "fixed" supposedly bad M.2s a few times.

A tip, I ran into this when I was trying to use the windows recovery environment WRE, no drive will show up even though I can boot normally into Windows and see all the drives. I scouted the internet for months not finding any post or thread mentioning that. The problem is with RTS aka IRS aka IRTS, Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Even with RTS drivers installed sometimes you cannot see the drives. And Asus always tend to have it on by default on their motherboards. The solution was just to turn it off in BIOS and then your BIOS will see all the drives.

Also very recently with the same T3600 my dad did some tinkering with it and some how his boot drive had a loose SATA connector and it was making his PC act weird until he restarted the PC and he ended up getting a BSOD with the same error message and it was caused by the loose cable it was loose enough to cause a problem but not for the BIOS to see the drive connected and after he plugged the connector back in it fixed his issue.

I have a usb drive with partition managers in case this thing happens. Having a linux distro helps also. The linux partition managers allow you to delete these partitions and start fresh. I would recommend having another usb with some free partition managers or a couple of well known linux distros for this situation. Really helped me out in the past when dual booting as well. One OS always wants to be the dominate OS for boot sectors. If you delete one of them that has that boot sector. You need some way too repair that. Macrium Reflect Free or Sergei Strelec bootable iso has helped in the past. You can find a english verion of strelec's bootable media. Just make sure the sha is the right one. Once the drive is found. I recommend secure erase in the asus bios. If the mobo supports it.

I received an HP laptop for Christmas 2020 that had an 1tb hdd - when replacing the HDD with an 2.5" SSD and a gen-4 NVME, I ran into this very frustrating problem that you did - the win-11 installer needed the RST drivers - then all was good.

I had the exact same issue with my NZXT cooler fitting my board. My solution was to zip tie the cables as tightly together as I possibly could and squash them as close to the cooler as possible. May look into a different cooler in the future.

I too have an Asus z690 board and for some reason intel RST is auto enabled by the bios I had to disable RST and then the PC was able to detect the drives and boot without the need for the intel RST driver in the Windows setup also when you update the Bios it will re-enable RST as for why Asus has this on by default? Maybe it was for Intel Octane when it did exist that is my guess

You could integrate the drivers for the SSD into the windows iso, there are videos on how to do it.
Another option is to clone an SSD that has a windows with Sisprep to the Samsung SSD. With Macrium Reflect it's easy, and it has tools to repair SSD boot after cloning, all from the Macrium Life USB.
Another thing would be to put the NVME SSD in another PC to update the firmware and see the remaining useful life, if it were used. There is usually an update and it can corrupt the saved data.

More recently I have had to do just that with the RST drivers on a couple of laptops when re-installing W10 or W11 - very frustrating, as it can be a challenge to identify the correct driver, but a quick download to the Intel site usually sorts it.
However, the other thing I'd say is some of the newer 12th and 13th gen boards only support Gen5 in the top most M.2 slot, meaning your BIOS and Windows installer won't 'see' the NVMe unless it is Gen5 (which you can't really buy yet here in Scotland) or you need to move to the lower down M.2 slots.
Another good result though, and well worth the perseverance, Greg!

  • @Sandmansa
    @Sandmansa ปีที่แล้ว

I've run into an issue like this before. But on an older system that doesn't natively support M.2 drives. You have to load an additional driver to get windows install to detect a M.2 drive on a pcie expansion card.

90 degree adapter for the USB type c plug near the pump. It will free up some space, reduce the pressure on the ram, and you could get a white cable to let the whole thing be white and aesthetic.

Greg already mentioned about it, plus probably informed the owner as well. Now it's upto the owner whether they want it or not.
Though i think AIO makers like NZXT should include those adapter in the box, for cases like this (they should cost more than $5).

New RST versions use Intel's Volume Management Device (VMD) to manage NVMEs in a RAID setup, and WIndows still doesn't have the driver to see them natively, hence the need to load the drivers during Windows installation.
Most Gen12 and up Intel motherboards have VMD (RAID) enabled by default for NVMEs.

  • @TimBoundy

This one was frustrating to watch. The AHCI/RAID thing is quite common, surprised Greg didn't know about it. With the new Windows install, the user won't be able to switch it back to the regular configuration without reinstalling Windows again.

The issue with the SSD looks kinda what i had once. My old Samsung 960Evo did not want to work in one of my old Gigabyte board.
But it worked just fine in other boards that i had used it in. It would work after a shutdown usualy but not after a restart.
I tried bios and firmware uppdates but nothing helped. So in the end i had to use another drive in that Gigabyte board.
The Samsung drive still works fine in an external case. But im happy that in this case it was only corrupted windows installation.

I've had this issue with windows installations in the past with new drives and found that it's easier, (providing you have another PC handy) to format the drive first and then install it in your desiggnated MB. I thought the case was way too white from the first, so you were correct that the be quiet fans would compliment it.

That’s very nostalgic, I used to have the same problem on my old Athlon XP machine that was set up for RAID and needed drivers to be loaded during Windows Setup or it wouldn’t detect any drives
The worst part is Microsoft didn’t even have a “need drivers?” button back then, you had to know to press F6 while the setup was loading

  • @Grid21

We had this problem at my work place, We were imaging some Dell desktops with NVME drives, and we had to create a custom windows install that had the driver for that particular drive pre-loaded so Windows installer could find and install it. This is actually an easy fix really. And it's not bios related, at least for us it wasn't.

  • @Saito9IV

Greg i really appreciate this one. Had. Very similar problem when i reset my 11th Gen Omen laptop. There is something about how the raid drivers for 10th and 11th gen intel machines is designed that it will not read drives without it installed. A great PSA would be 10th 11th gen intel require rst driver to be loaded on install or your drive wont show. And if install doesnt work after you need to add the driver with boot disk

  • @queegfivehundred8197

I had to install the RST drivers when doing a clean install of windows 11 on an 11th gen ASUS laptop... I tried the other BIOS option (likely AHCI) and windows still wouldn't install, but because the factory windows 11 was still working I knew it wasn't a hardware problem. It was very old school - I hadn't had to add drivers during windows install since probably windows 95, which would have been for a third party IDE add in card - but of course once windows was installed the current paradigm reasserted itself as all the ASUS bloatware was automatically installed by Windows Update...

That's why I went with a Fractal Design AIO, a single cable to the motherboard's AIO Pump Header. All the fans plug into the fan hub on the radiator.
At the point where it was posting consistently I would have reset the UEFI back to defaults to clear any potential issues then reinstalled Windows.

I’m sure with my knowledge now, all I have to do is download windows on the M.2 instead of my sata..but I didn’t want to lose all my info and customizations on sata.
