    I think these motherboards came with a weird bios from factory. I have a B450 tomahawk max 2 which was supposed to have come with the zen 3 bios from factory, put a 5600g in it and kept getting CPU debug light and random shut downs. Turns out it was a weird bios version it shipped with from factory. Updating the bios worked perfectly.

    • @Ficii1
      @Ficii1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Those boards launched before the zen 3 arrived. The factory support was Zen 2 but that also depends on the time it was manufactured, as it might get the bios updated in the factory, but there are still some without that bios update as they were sitting in storage.

      @@Ficii1 yeah, mine was advertised as Ryzen 5000 ready on the box and bought it new from Amazon so I assumed the motherboard was fine but it's definitely a dodgy factory bios

      Yeah that is a very weird thing cause I have a 550F board from Asus and my friend has an Asus 450F board and his had this issue yet mine didn't and I have a 5950x and he has a 5800x yet his did this same thing and when I updated the bios for him, it worked and fixed it. So this definitely ain't a normal thing. Hopefully MSI and other manufacturers really make sure this doesn't happen again and are aware of this and hopefully fix this cause this ain't something that should happen straight out of the box like that.

      The Zen 3 APUs were released much later than the first set of Zen 3 CPUs, so most likely the board was manufactured after the initial release of Zen 3, but long before the APUs were released. So at the time it supported all available Zen 3 CPUs.

    The ''missing'' bios may have been updated via MSI's software in windows. Some times i have seen it having different revisions then the site.
    I think the ''automatic'' updates are some times different then the ''manual'' ones. And you never should use the windows software (MSI LIVE UPDATE 6) to update bios because its crap.
    I think that is what happened in this case.

      While I'm not sure on this case in video, but yeah...I had this bad experience back on early 2000s on a MSI motherboard in my house because their LIVE UPDATE tool provided a new BIOS update but that turned out a faulty release...install that will brick the board.
      And then my brother had to take that motherboard to MSI company to replace that fault BIOS...and he found he was not the only one had to replace the BIOS chip(I think the new replaced one was previous version of BIOS on MSI's website) when on there...at least that process was free.
      (That motherboard was just "one day old" lol)
      And the next day...they just take out the BIOS update from their site and the LIVE Update server...and never had any new BIOS release for that board to ever released.
      Yeah, be careful if they uploaded a fault BIOS release...it's rare but it can happens, at least for MSI. :P

      @@PlayerLin I cant think of anything else. Greg and other comments said that it may have shipped out from the factory with that bios.
      But the owned said that it was working after the motherboard replacement. So that cant be the case then. If the bios is incopatible it would have not worked at all.
      And the the bios date was from may of 2022 and i dont think they are still making B450 boards in 2022.
      So the only explanation that remains is that the bios was updated after the owner had gotten it and used it for a while.
      Bios update is a very delicate prosedure and doing it in windows is very risky with any boards.
      There are so many things that can go wrong with all the windows backround operations and so on.
      So i think that the owner used the LIVE UPDATE to update everything including the bios.
      Maybe the bios was already bad or it got corrupted during installation because of windows.
      Best way to confirm this would be to ask the owner or check if the LIVE UPDATE is installed on the computer at all.
      I would actualy want to know if i was right or not. But i gues it will remain a mystery.

    Gigabyte has released a few BIOS that aren't available online anymore due to security issues or they were test BIOS. I assume Gigabyte isn't the only company that has done that. Unfortunately they never let people know the BIOS is bad. It just disappears from the support pages. It's a bit sad that no one is notified when issue BIOS are released and then deleted.

    The only time I don't verify the failure is if they describe something that sounds like a power issue/short. I'd hate to verify and end up doing more damage in doing so. That's about the only time I tear it apart and examine first. Had a system not too long ago that had all sorts of power issues. Loose wires, shorts... and worse yet, the wrong SATA cable for the PSU that was sending 12v into the SSD, which was already dead as a result.
    And how sad that a supposed computer repair shop missed this. I wonder if they just did the basic crap and didn't see the money in spending a lot of time on it and gave it back. I sure hope they didn't charge them anything.

I'd find it odd to have some version installed that isn't publicly available, but as long as it's not a known beta or known to cause issues, I wouldn't flash an older version. Depending on the revision of the board it could even be that the older BIOS isn't really compatible with it.

    There may be another explanation, that happened to me on some Ryzen platforms (and may be related to the bent board): excess tension on the stock cooler can make the system unstable. You unmounted the cooler so that could have fixed it

      I had a ryzen board last week completely refuse to power on after applying thermal paste because the cooler was slightly too tight. Its insanely easy to short a board this way.

      Whilst that is possible I am more likely to believe that it was a bad BIOS. The "E" variant is not on the MSI website and if you look online you'll see that there are reports of systems misbehaving and not booting with the "E" BIOS. That would also explain why it jumps from D to F as MSI would have pulled a known bad BIOS.

    Greg, this video stuck in my mind and saved me a fair bit of pulling out my hair on a recent build. Long story short, purchased a B550 Aorus Master new in the box from 2022, which needed BIOS update for my 5900X. Swapped board out to a 3600X setup for another build and wouldn't you know it -- powers up, but only half the AMI logo loads and no POST. No CPU LED either. Rolled back the BIOS to a 2022 version and voila -- runs great.

    I had this exact same problem with my BIOS, it had taken me over 3 weeks and non stop crashes/blue screens.
    Even Windows 11 clean install crashed before I realise what was happening.
    My mobo - MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi
    The problem BIOS: 7C37v1I
    The new safe BIOS: 7C37v1J
    I wanted to update the BIOS as I was looking to upgrade to 5800X3D.
    3 weeks of pain, then checked the BIOS page and my mind was blown!
    OMG it's not there, installed the new bios, no crashes since, I could've cried.
    Now I'm a happy owner of 5800X3D! Also undervolted :)

    I also have the same issue with my PC. Tried everything I saw here in this video and also on everyone comments, like slacking a little bit the CPU cooler to avoid bending the mobo, tried my CPU in another computer and it went well.
    CPU : Ryzen 3600
    Mobo : B450 Tomahawk MAX
    GPU : GeForce 2060 KO
    SSD : Samsung 860 EVO , 1TB
    PSU : EVGA 500 BR
    All parts bought in early 2020.
    I tried flashing BIOS, reinstalling precedent version (Version D, the same as this video). I tried disconnecting/reconnecting maybe 10 times every components.
    My computer sometimes boot and sometimes go straight to the red CPU debug light.
    When it boot, I used it maybe 1-2hours before it went dark again with the cpu debug light of doom.
    I will try to look for a way to test my PSU before trying to buy a new one. Sadly I had a lot of hopes that my problem was the same as this video.
    Still really instructive to watch, great video!

    I have a question.
    Nice video btw.
    Should amd Ryzen 5600x with RTX 2060 make noise when gaming?
    CPU fan is one that i hear the most.
    Should be normal to hear some noise from it or should be silence.
    I have Ryzen 5600x with stock cooler..

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are using the standard cooler it will be noisy under load

    • @jaekae13
      @jaekae13 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, every PC makes noise when gaming. The fans on your GPU, your CPU cooler, and case all spin up to help keeps temps under control while under load.
      If the noise bothers you, get an aftermarket tower cooler like the Id Cooling SE-214-XT, SE-224-XT, Be Quiet Pure Rock 2, Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo, Vetroo V5, Deepcool AK620, Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120, Scythe Fuma 2, or Noctua NH-U12S Redux. Any of the above should do the trick, but the Scythe Fuma 2 will likely run the quietest. The 5600x is a relatively cool chip though, so if you're on a budget, the Id Cooling SE-214-XT will work just fine and be quieter than the stock cooler.
      You can also go into your BIOS and set up a custom fan curve. The default fan curve can sometimes be needlessly aggressive, and you may be able to adjust it so that it runs quieter while still keeping temps at a reasonable level. You can do the same thing with your GPU fans by using a program like MSI Afterburner.

    • @hazzmati
      @hazzmati ปีที่แล้ว

      The rtx 2060 could also be making noise depending on which model you bought. Asus or Msi variants usually have more silent coolers than other variants.

    I had a similar issue like this except mine post and goes to desktop, but... randomly restarts. I have an ASUS B550-F Gaming Motherboard and installed the latest bios that had a release note states "Added Ryzen 3D CPUs Support" which I only have Ryzen 3800X which I figured should I try bios flashback to older BIOS. Fortunately it did fix the issue, the question is Why? are we the Guinea pigs or nightmare? I just don't understand why vendors don't test this Bios properly. Also The latest Bios for ASUS B550-F Gaming is not a beta, which really get on my nerves. This video points out that just because your Bios is at the latest version and date, doesn't mean it's stable or better aka "If it's not broken, don't fix it".

    The MSI B450 Tomahawk Max boards have issues. I’m on my fourth brand new one under warranty, all with similar issues. I bought one and it failed. Then the two RMA boards I got both failed. I just opened a new RMA to get the third new board replaced.
    And that missing BIOS was available until recently. I used it to try to flash one of these bad boards. But it did it work. When I used that missing BIOS, the board would not work with either a Ryzen A8-9600, 2600, 3600, nor a 5500.

    The bios you installed, version 7C02v3D doesn't match what you flashed according to the mobo readout E7C02AMS. So, what's on the website won't necessarily match what the bios shows...stupid on the vendor IMO. Hence your right to question what was on there in the first place.
    EDIT: you also said the system worked fine at first when the owner swapped the 3600 into the new board. Definitely strange, I'll chock it up to bios rot. It's a real thing and does happen.

    Basically all of the B450 Tomahawk boards had some major BIOS issues. I built a PC for someone with a B450 Tomahawk and it soft bricked itself after changing a few settings and turned out (after half a day of Googling) that it was a known issue that if you changed a setting (can't remember which one it was) without first updating the BIOS, the board effectively bricked itself. I then had another fun half a day trying to flash the latest BIOS via a USB drive, but MSI had the instructions listed wrong and I eventually found a random forum post explaining that you had to format the USB drive differently than what the instructions said.

    HP omen with a 120mm AIO on a 12th gen intel.. You know you're in for a rough time if you buy this. The cooler has been tested, and it's far from sufficient enough for such a high tdp CPU. Plus, HP has been known for power managing the motherboards so much that you will never see the performance you're paying for. Probably good money as a sponsor, but shitty PCs that I don't think any viewer would appreciate getting stuck with.

Long story short I tested a lot of things but a bios update solved the problem, looks like even if it is supposed to be compatible from factory, this bios also had a problem. A friend of mine ran into this same issue with an AsRock B450 and a 5600G, too much coincidence
