That's pretty awesome that at 14 they wanted to build their first PC. I didn't build my first until I was in my early 20s. It's so helpful that the next generation of builders have so many TH-cam videos to help them build and troubleshoot, and sometimes have someone who can help them when all else fails 😊
I'm glad Greg was able to help this young builder out and get his system working...

I didn't build my first PC until I was 19. This was in 2019, and I'll never forget the feeling of euphoria I felt when I pressed the power button and the system posted on the first try. 4 years later, and I have now built 6 PCs. I wish I could do it all the time, but money doesn't grow on trees, so it's a very special occasion when I'm able to build a system.
I wanted to start building PCs when I was 14, but being 14, I didn't have any money to spend on computer parts. I doubt I'll ever become a parent, but in the alternate universe where I am a parent, I'd get my child into PC building at a very young age. My father built a couple PCs in the 1990s, but he had abandoned the hobby by the time I was born in 2000. Oh well.
Unlike my dad, I'm never going to give up on the hobby. I'll be building PCs until the day I die. I find it very relaxing and therapeutic to put a PC together. I just wish I was able to do it more than once every two years. 😞

What an insane build for a 14 year old. His parents must have a lot of money or he worked a lot and saved up money. But really cool that teens still build their own PCs, I love it. • @ACOnetwork
      @ACOnetwork ปีที่แล้ว

@@chrism869 yeah sadly it is true and necesarry. For example BIOS can have some bug or you bought some latest CPU where BIOS does not have it on its own list and that is why it wont boot. It is good to update BIOS when you buy a motherboard but read its description on the web page. The worse it is, if you do not have flashback to be able to flash bios without correct CPU where in that case supportes CPU needs to be putted in so you can upgrade it. There is more to this but I went through it roughly.

I remember when I first started building pcs during the pandemic and trying to pair a 5600x with an older am4 mobo was a nightmare. TBH even now when I buy older b450 mobos to pair with 3600x or newer cpus for budget builds I have to keep a ryzen 2700 around incase I have to dig around said mobos bios to update it to the latest correct bios, its a pain and I know what im doing lol.

I mount my CPU fans on the left out of habit. In most boards the RAM is way too close to the fan, when it's on the right. And I had the fan basically vibrate a stick. Which caused random bluescreens. Once I put the fan on the left. It never happened again. But I still have the fan pull heat from the HS. Not pull air from the rear. Boards should add another debug light "Firmware".

For future reference, 600 series mb have 12th gen support, 700 series mb have 13th gen support. They won't usually be updated unless they get a mb revision. ie. R.2 stamped on the MB bottom rear. or the mb gets a v.2 with mb updates.
Also, when testing RAM, it is a good idea to test with non-overclocked RAM. ddr4 uses 1.2v, any higher is considered overclocking. I mean, you wouldn't diagnose a problematic PC with a known overclocked CPU? That would nuts! So, you should do the same for RAM.
I know you did a series on bad CPUs, but you were using overclocked RAM at 1.35v, this can expose a weak RAM controller, that would otherwise work on a standard 1.2v DDR4 sticks. I'm sure at least one of those faulty CPUs still work. I mean, the CPU QVL standards measure will let not cherry CPUs through, or get lower binned and could easily get a weak, but fully function memory controller, until you plop in OC RAM, then BSOD or no post.

What I wish MOBO manufacturers would do these days is have a simple VGA chip on the board, so they board can boot into the BIOS without a CPU, RAM etc, running from a ROM chip to do so. This would be an easy and safe way to ensure BIOS upgrades would happen when QFlash doesn't work. A simple 640x480 VGA chip isn't going to break the bank, cost will be buttons. The CMOS when Posting if it doesn't detect RAM/CPU it should boot via the VGA chip and separate ROM chip to enable access to the BIOS easily, also it could do this if there is a fault.. to show a log on what a fault was also.
Guess it wouldn't be efficient in manufacturing I guess.

I have an old Hyper 212 Evo cooler on my aging FX-8320e. The fan, while still working, was getting loud and whiny. I replaced the fan with a beQuiet! Pure Wings 2 fan and it runs just as cool (cooler actually, but that might have just been from spring cleaning) and darn near dead silent. Love their fans.

BIOS flashing is a nightmare. I didn't have the privilege to build my own PC, and had to watch a technician finish it instead. I later discovered that the Motherboard was running F5 bios version which was actually stock. I tried to flash my Gigabyte B660 DS3H AX DDR4, yet chickened out at the last moment. I used their @BIOS tool instead, which allowed the PC to connect to their Servers and obtain the latest stable bios version and automatically flashing it. Now, it's compatible with 13th Gen Intel CPUs, if I ever wanted to upgrade the CPU.

I had a similar issue with my MSI Z790 Tomahawk but with the LAN drivers . The integrated intel LAN controller and the WiFI controller wouldn´t show up and no matter what I couldnt get the drivers installed with windows installed. Just like you did with the NVME drivers I had to manually inject the drivers before installing Windows. That solved the problem. Even with Win11 installed and bypassing the by microsoft forced internet connection I couldnt install shit because Windows 11 locks you out after restarting if you try to skip the networkconnection via console.
But MSI does include the drivers for the Intel LAN controller on the USB stick that comes with the MB. So it seems to be a known issue with the Z790 chipset.

K cpu naturally has higher clock and can be undervolted through some B series board. Also overclocking is a dumb old days thing for normal users tbh.
    I don't see any issue using a K cpu on a B board.
Edit: And 13600 is just a 12th gen revamp, 13600K is the true 13th gen that has more L2 cache and better performance over 12th gen.

I expected it to be a bios issue when he said he has a dram led with no boot. I had the same thing back when I put a 3770K on my ASUS P5KC. It's annoying, because I also spent a good deal of time messing with ram (I mean, that's why the light is there no?), but I ended up figuring it out after trying to put the 2500K back in and some googling. Funny thing though, when I went for the BIOS update the thing failed, got to 100% and everything, just never booted again, just dead.

Your channel really does help- My PC wouldn't post after I moved to a new location, I followed your step to solve it, it was the bios. But I think the mother board was damaged during the move.
It did post to a safe bios, but I had to leave it running 24/7 or I would have to repeat the process.
I was going to upgrade soon anyway, so I upgraded to a 12400 on a B660 Tuff gaming board, a big jump from a 10400 and I can upgrade to a 13600k when ready to do so.

13:50 No need to lower the exhaust fan - warm air tends to rise surprisingly quickly with little inertia IME, so you might even consider moving it to the top entirely, fan bearings permitting. Now in the lowered position it might be drawing in warm air from the other components better. If in doubt, temperatures would have to be watched in use, but that's fine-tuning, alongside XMP, C-States, ASPM and such.
I got a Silent Wings 4 140 mm as an exhaust fan recently, and the rubber nibble mounting definitely gets a thumbs up from me. It's holding on well even in elongated holes (which is more than I can say for one-sided Noctua rubber nipples, an NF-A14 with those slides down immediately). The fan itself has the kind of premium feel that you expect at its price point, too, and dare I say it's pretty sexy-looking?

I'm going to get flamed hard but... I don't care how old you are. If your going to bother tackling a task educate yourself 1st. This was a easy, searchable, and obvious problem to solve. I know they said "PCPP" said it was good to go. But always check the MB literature for compatibility. Never rely on a third party. I stared working on engines at 5, yes 5. I had a yz50 dirk bike and my father made me do all the maintenance at 5. He tought me and I learned at 5. At 14 I was buying fixing and selling computers, small engine things, and working at my dad's dealership doing oil changes, break jobs, tires, and other lub tech duties. I don't think I'm special I just always wanted to learn and when I faced a problem I read manuals, service bulletins, and other peripherals to help me through. I did not have The luxury of the internet in the mix 90's and if I got stumped my job was taken from me and I did not get paid. So again I learned how to critically think and problem solve.

Hiya, Greg! I really enjoy this series, and I was curious about some things.
Where applicable, could you investigate correlations between episodes? The reason I ask this is because I feel like most instances of CPU problems were with AMD chips, for example. I just think it might add a little hidden insight as to what to expect when you're preparing a new rig.
    Thanks!

I first check the ram & had graphics on CPU so I removed the graphics to check that. Eventually I realized I had the just released CPU & had to do a Bios update for the motherboard to get it working. Lucky my board had Bios update & did not have to get an older CPU. Before I built my 1st PC I watched a lot of your videos, plus others like Paul's Hardware & Jays two cents. Double checked everything was seated and plugged in correctly and still got the red cpu light. Greg, I have AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU on a MSI Tomahawk Max B450 board. I was cleaning the PC and I took the CPU cooler, a Noctua NH-U12 A to check the thermo paste ,you guessed it the CPU was stuck to the cooler. I used alcohol and cotton swaps to loosed the paste and as able to get to remove the CPU. I put the CPU back in what I thought was the correct orientation, however when I went to turn it on, it was dead as a stone . I did some reading and someone said if the CPU is not in the correct position ,the machine would turn on. I removed the cooler again and removed the CPU. I hit the power button and the machine turned on . I looked at the CPU pins and it looked like you of them was bent. I straightened the pins, well as far as I could tell. When I power the machine up I get DRAM led light . Before all this happened the computer was running fine . I may have still a bent pin ,or the controller chip in the CPU is bad or the board may be damaged. What do think ,I have ordered a new board and CPU

Be quiet are some of the best fans on the market. I've had their Silent Wings 3 and those are dead silent, and very quiet even on high rpm. Very good for a quiet and efficient cooling . One thing I personally don't like is the PWM control - I'd much rather have regular old 3PIN connected to a manual RPM controller, than have to bother with setting up PWM standards in BIOS - it's tedious, especially if you have multiple fans (I have 9 in my case) and especially if they are of different brands or RPM rating - you need higher speed or static pressure fans on your radiator and higher airflow or lesser speed on your case (depending on case ventilation) .
I would love for you to do a tutorial on PWM fan profiles, what do you think is optimal. Leaving it on stock motherboard settings is usually not enough for gaming sessions - fans rarely ramp up, while the temperature goes nuclear... I'd rather have higher noise and lower temps than risk overheating.

Just threw the CPU and Mobo into PC partpicker, and it gave a warning that a bios update might be required for the CPU to work.
New builders, remember to read and understand the potential issues/incompatibilities before proceeding, and if you don't understand, find someplace to ask. You can avoid a lot of headaches that way.

was confused why pcpartpicker wouldn't tell you about this issue bc i had the same one with a ryzen cpu when i made my current build. added the mobo and cpu to a new build and it does say if you have an older BIOS that you'll need to update it to v2004 at least to work with the 13600KF. i do get why it might have been worded confusingly bc it starts off the warning saying that it does work, but ends it with the caveat of having to update the BIOS.

The AMD board I got would have required a CPU to flash it, but luckily this was during the time when you could get AMD to send out a cheap loaner chip to perform the bios upgrade.
That said, I didn't wind up needing it, as it already had the latest BIOS on it. But I was ready to do it the second I had a problem. It just turned out to be something else.
