People like to dump on old hardware but realistically a 580 8GB is good enough for even most new games at medium settings 1080p 60hz. Super enjoyable experience for probably 99% of people.
We bleeding edge enthusiasts are really just a very vocal minority when it comes to the overall customer base I would think. Hell my last 2 upgrades have netted me zero real world performance. I'd still be getting the same 144 FPS at 1440p in all the games I actually play on my old 7700K/1080Ti build, which I upgraded to a 9900K/2080Ti, which I upgraded to a 10900K/3080.

You should make a Fix or Flop shelf/cabinet for the background of all the bad components that you have replaced. Of course name it somewhere "Fix or Flop". It would look pretty awesome IMO in the background when you make videos/stream. Unless you already threw away bunch of those components. It was just a thought and would show that you've helped tons of people with their PCs. I wish people didn't buy pre-bulits but built their rigs themselves. They would gain lots of knowledge and would be able to troubleshoot themselves, would save a good chunk of $$$ and would be able to customize their rigs to whatever they desire. It's much easier than it looks for us builders with 10 or more years of experience... although I was already overclocking, modding and troubleshooting with my first build back in the day. It's much easier now "with decent mobos" it will throw you a code or at very least show you tiny LED light to which component is bad or has some kind of issues. I wish, we had those things back in the day.

I was thinking exactly the same when I saw that psu. I've had many psu's over the years and the worst one was Thermaltake.
It caused some random crashes and for some reason that psu internally shorted a few times and caused system to power off. I had to insulate the psu case cover myself to keep using it as I was still saving for a new one. Luckily it didn't break anything else with it...
I still have Enermax psu that I bought after that and it still works fine in my home server even though it's around 10 years old and it has been used heavily over the years.

Not surprised, that is a bad PSU and it wasn't good when it was brand new either. It's one of those "slap big wattage number on it, cut lots of corners on the components and design, then sell to unsuspecting people for really cheap" models that were quite popular a while back. At least it's not one of the PSUs that completely removes all the filtering circuits to cut costs and claims 600W out of a 250W unit, but I doubt that makes you feel any better when it bricks. Well maybe it does, at least it doesn't look like this one bricks the entire rest of your PC with it.

    • @ItsMeLeo
      @ItsMeLeo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thats a really good build considering today prices and considering the fact that a friend gave it to you.
It depends of what are you doing with the PC. If you game you can sell the 590 and buy an used but better GPU ( i dont know, gtx 1080 or 2060 if you want Ray Tracing or AMD equivalent cards ). Sure GPU prices are insane but you can sell the 590 for a lot. You can also sell the CPU and buy a 5600x which is way better for gaming.
But if you work the story is different. It depends of the kinda of work you do. If you need more cores you can upgrade to some Ryzen 3xxx series ( for example the Ryzen 3900x with 12 cores will be an excellent upgrade for work ).
Sorry my english btw, its not my native language. Hope i helped you :)

Yeah, I've been pulling my hair out on my server PC, It'll crash randomly, sometimes it'll crash right away, or a week later, or month later, no amount of stressing it seems to make it crash, swapped out parts, bought parts, it still kept doing it, I decided to hook up my volt meter to the molex plug and I caught it!
At idle it'll run at 11v on the 12v rail, stressing it it'll go up to 11.5 and even jumps to 12.4v suddenly, or drops below 11.3v under load. At idle though I caught some drops below 11v, saw 10.6v at one point although the system didn't crash but 11v or lower is a problem. But months and month and I finally replaced the PSU and all it good. I was abought to retire the server.

PSU failer was the start of the death of my last PC. *DO NOT VAPE* in the room your PC lives in. The vaporised liquid will condense on cold surfaces such as your windows, mirrors and most importantly here, the inside surfaces of your PC!
I hadn't opened my PC for a long time as it was a very old build, but had been working flawlessly for years prior. I was happily gaming away when all of a sudden this *THICK* white "smoke" started billowing out the back of my PC! There was also this smell of fried electronics (you'll know the smell I mean if you've ever smelled it before).
My initial reaction was to kill the power from the switch, as the PC was still running normally at the time, what was surprising considering the amount of "smoke" pooring out of it! However after looking further into it, I now understand why. Over time, having vaped in my room, it had all condenced around the fans and anywhere that was cold like the case's metal and glass surfaces, and dripped down and pooled up at the bottom of my PC case!
I opened up the powersupply to see the damage (not advised unless you know what you are doing; It can hold power for hours after being turned off in the capasitors and give a fatal shock if treated incorrectly). What had happened was the vape juice had condenced around the cold PSU fan shroud, the condenced vape juice had then traveled down all the wires inside the PSU and over time corroded the protective plasic wire coverings and shorted out the PSU fan wires (luckily is wasn't the mains wires or it could of been sooo much worse).
When you short an electric circuit, the short will heat up immensely. Vape juice is mostly made up of the same thing as what you put in a "smoke" machine, so I had basically inadvertently turned my PC into a supercarged smoke machine and filled my entire room with fake smoke lol.
I replaced the PSU and cleaned everything else up, but vape juice had got into so many of the other components I ended up having to build a new PC. In the space of a month or so I went through 3 second hand mobos and 2 second hand gfxs cards, got a new CPU and bought a load of new ram, but something just kept destroing components. I had basically replaced everything but the case and the SSDs and disk drives by the end lol. It continued acting real funky and just wasn't worth spending any more effort on after the second set of replaced parts started failing too (it had lasted me like 13 years at this point)!
