Technically, Ridley is actually the only newcomer in Ultimate to have alts that were cut. In the demo that was used for the first ultimate tournament, Ridley had color alts that were based on Meta Ridley and Mecha Ridley. Of course, when Ultimate released, and as seen in the initial trailer, they were replaced by Meta Ridley as alternate costumes. Which I think we can agree is a FAR better choice, but it's interesting to note.

Yes, I actually played these skins in the demo. The mecha ridley one was pretty neat. Ridley was white and had green claws. The Meta Ridley one was a cool black skin with yellow wings. The Meta Ridley costumes are great but these were very good alts tbh.

Black yoshi is not coming back because of Supermario Logan turned black yoshi into a African American stereotype. If they added black yoshi they will be referencing Supermario Logan. Smash is for good boys and girls.

I think Mario should have turned into Fire Mario for his Final Smash. That would have not only made up for the costume being cut, but it would also he more accurate to the Mario games (since Mario needs a Fire Flower to use fire powers)
Believe it or not in melee, Ice Climbers had a purple costume that never made it outside of said game as it got replaced by an alt that is actually red. You played as Nana as with this alt with a white Popo following her. The battle portrait and stock icons were red instead of purple and it was used for the red team. Someone on the dev team must have been colorblind. 💀
Honestly having more alts for every character would be a much needed improvement. I'd love to see a Dry Bowser, Meowser even a Fury Bowser Alt, and better Sonic alts referencing more characters than just blue and darker blue.
The reason why Marios green costume was kept in was because it... Well it's green and sakurai wanted there to be an easy way for teams to tell each other apart, so if you picked the green team, Mario's green costume was easy to see so you didn't accidentally attack your team mate

I love those blue goggles. Ive used them more in Smash than any individual character considering Pichu was my main in Melee and Ultimate and Pikachu was my main in Brawl and Sm4sh
19:35 considering Sega's Twitter has acknowledged Sonic.exe's existence in the past, and considering how Sanic is essentially an offical Sonic character now, with his shirt in forces, his cameo in Sonic Movie 1, (and apparently there was also a Chili Dog flavored G-feul for him). I wouldn't be suprised if a toned down version of Sonic.exe actually became an offical Sonic character, hell, he may even become a villian for an IDW comic arc. I mean, in the Tangle and Whisper mini-series there was a panel where the villian was disguised as Sonic and was staring twoards the reader. (It also helps that there has been a Pingas reference in the Sonic Boom show, and a possible Ugandan Knuckles and Fandub Eggman reference in Sonic Movie 2 and Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog respectively.)
If they had to cut alts so Wario had 8, they should've cut the redundant red, blue, green, because his WarioWare alts already have those 3 colors, its as if the made Wario's alts before deciding character colors weren't bound to teams anymore, and didn't bother to change that in Ultimate, and doesn't help that the cut alts were from his Wario Land side, while those red, blue, green overall alts are just references to not Wario, but Mario (red-Donkey Kong/early Mario, green-Mario's Green Smash alt, blue-Mario Bros.), as if Wario's only 2d platformer was SML2, rather than properly representing WarioWare and Wario Land sides with 4 alts for each, its just 4 for WarioWare, 1 for Wario Land, and 3 for Mario...

Here’s an idea. What if the player was allowed to change certain colors on a character to make their own costumes in game. Such as making Mario, Luigi, and Wario’s overalls and hat different colors, for example. Then Nintendos premade costumes could be the ones the player couldn’t make themselves, like model swaps and also things like the Fierce Diety Link alt. Just an idea.

Games like CVS2, Soul Calibur 3 and Ultra Street Fighter 2 do this, so it would be nice for Smash to do so. But I imagine character rights might get in the way of that.

It recently came to my attention but I have to wonder why the hell does Snake not have Metal Gear's traditional Tuxedo as an alt costume in Smash Bros? It's the most recurring bonus outfit in the franchise and is typically unlocked as a reward for beating the game in a certain way. If it isn't in a game then it usually has an equivalent like the sunglasses in MGS2 (although it actually is in the Substance version of MGS2 for use in VR missions) or more commonly the suit in MGS4 and MGR. It just makes so much sense as an alt costume for Snake, hell he even actually had it as an alt costume in that DreamMix TV game that he was in before Smash Bros.
Sonic's green alt actually made him more green in Brawl rather than the purple look Ultimate gave for that one. Wish that returned since any alt that deviates more from blue (like black and silver) look better as alts.

I still dislike when people say "render" when referring to an alternative mesh. Every costume has a different render. Each costume is rendered in 2D. But I do agree that they should have more different meshes.

Honestly giving everyone ten alts to choose from would be a great way to bring back some alts lost to time. I felt like the Yin and Yang concept for an alt had yet to be explored, even with Ice Climbers or Pyra/Mythra, which is an alt I really want to see on a two-as-one character. And a lot of the Pokemon titles have sort of contrasting color schemes that, even though the reference wouldn't connect, would be a great opportunity to base alts for Ice Climbers and Pyra/Mythra off of, despite the two or three franchises being completely separate, wouldn't you say?

17:38 This might actually be a fairly obscure reference to the protagonist of G Gundam, Domon Kasshu, the color palette matches and this wouldn't be the first time smash references Gundam, the green Samus alt is a reference to the Zaku from Gundam 79
One change I'd make for Pokemon Trainer is swapping the pokemon colours for alts 3, 4 & 5, giving the green alt pokemon to alt 4 (the one with Leaf in Brendan's Emerald colours) to reference Pokemon Emerald, the pink alt pokemon to alt 5 (the one with Red in Lucas's colours) to reference Pokemon Pearl and give the yellow alt pokemon to alt 3 (the one with Red in Ethan's colours) referencing Pokemon Gold
I think that it would make sense if you had a costume creator where you get to choose a model and a color for each different aspect of the costume, and you can reply with the word yes or no or go in to greater detail if that is what you prefer.
I think characters the have female variations or age variations (like ike and kinda like Roy who was younger in melee) should have a thing like pythra where can press x to change to that alt, and to keep the 8 regular alts for each person. It’d lead to 16 different Alts for each character that has this ability, and likely would be pretty time consuming, but I think it’d be pretty cool Edit: also, I think they should bring back zero suit Samus’ brawl design, idk what it is about it but I just think it looks better than the one she has now
Between crafted yoshi replacing black yoshi and him getting a few notes taken out of his victory theme for no reason, yoshi truly took the most Ls in ultimate. Also the fact that the only Pokémon with their shinies as an alt are incineroar and technically charizard (with its gen 2 shiny) is a crime. That’s literally the easiest choice.
I think the reason Mario has his green costume is because it’s a reference to the team matches, where in the past the color of your costume determined the color of the team you were on. In Ultimate, although your not forced to wear the color of your team anymore, the idea is still referenced with red blue and green, but now so is yellow. Because of this, every character (I believe, I’m too lazy to fact check) has at least (vaguely) 1 red costume, a blue one, a green one , and a yellow one Edit: Link proved me wrong but imma keep my comment anyways.
First character in and I already am concerned about Team matchups where originally the different colored characters were forced to change color to the team color back then. Removing said color would break a tradition. I actually use the green Mario costume whenever I play as I do like the color scheme; looking back at Super Smash Bros. 64, Mario's green color reminds me of the lime-orange Tic Tacs which honestly makes me like it more. 😂 This video still has an interesting point of view and it was a fun time watching it. :)
Tbh I wish characters still required a red, blue, and green alt even if they aren't forced to use those colors for their respective teams anymore, I like using green alts, and there's characters that just don't have that color anywhere
I somewhat like the green Mario alt, but mostly I think replacing it with the Fire Mario alt would've just made the selection worse by virtue of having too much of one color scheme (that being red & white; seriously we'd then have the Golf, Fire, AND Wedding alts all using that color scheme). If I were to replace one for it, I'd replace the Golf alt because as nice of a reference as it is, I think Fire Mario is a much more iconic reference to keep than an old NES game's box art (then again I'm biased against that game since it's where the Luigi-Daisy shipping started). For Link, I don't really mind losing the old tunics because most of them are still available on Young and/or Toon Link anyways. Yoshi... look at how they massacred my boy. All they did was change one alt, but it's for such a forced promotion, AND it hurts the color variety of my boy's palettes by giving him a second green alt. WHY. AT LEAST MAKE THE CRAFTED ALT A DIFFERENT COLOR. Like black, white, orange... ANYTHING but one that's already in the game! Sheik in Brawl was apparently concept art either for TP or for Brawl itself, so the devs wanted to have an idea of Sheik in the TP style at least. More importantly, though, Sheik's outfit in Ult isn't JUST concept, it's actually strongly based on an actual set of clothes you can get in Breath of the Wild itself, the Sheikah Set (which can also be dyed in that game to be any color; thus matching most of Sheik's "referenceless" palettes anyways). I'd honestly have liked seeing them pull a Ike on Ganondorf and give him both of his looks (OoT and TP), even if they'd have to have some creative liberties on the moves where he uses weapons. Mewtwo's old green alt is ironically close to his shiny nowadays, making that potentially the reason it got cut in favor of the yellow alt referencing an old shiny. Ideally imo we'd have both, but this is The Pokemon Company, no fun is allowed. -_- I prefer young Ike. Enough said. :) (That said, my god he needs a better voice) The purple wings in Pit's pink alt in Ult is a carryover of that old Brawl alt I think, though personally I'd rather they kept the pink outfit the same and replaced the "Dark" Pit alt with the old purple alt since Dark Pit himself is in the game anyways (and he himself deserves a better alt to replace his "Light" Pit alt too). Speaking of Dark Pit, I kinda like the old yellow alt's wings more but keeping his hair black in Ult was the perfect call imo. Seconded on ZSS. I understand why there's two blue ZS alts, since one is darker, but that's lame and I'd rather take that fancy purple one back instead, since sis would love it. Plus she already has a darker blue alt, that being her indigo shorts. Wario I was thinking you could replace the blue overalls alt with the "sailor" Wario and the green overalls alt with the brown (Foreman Spike) one, to give it some extra color variety and to distinguish himself more from Mario (who has the same colors of blue and green even if reversed) in the process. Brendan's Emerald color wasn't exactly "given" to Leaf, as it more commonly ressemble May's color in the same game. Not like it matters much since they're essentially the same character, but it's always worth keeping in mind. I always assumed the "yellow" trainer alt in Brawl was meant to be a reference to the monochrome screen of the Game Boy, and thus the trainer's sprite. Why it's beige and not yellow, idk, maybe it's to not clash with their skin tone? Anyways this was rectified with a Selene alt for Leaf afterwards, so all's well. (TPC's palette restrictions did my boy Lucario dirtier than the entire internet; and that's a competition I didn't think it'd win) (I also like Brawl Wolf more) Robin I understand why they changed the blue palette's hair; it's more accurate to the default Kris, the player character from New Mystery of the Emblem. In fact I'd say the same for green, as it now more accurately ressembles the sprite of Mark, the (optional) tactician player character from FE7. But the red palette is definitely a huge WTF change imo. Sure the blonde hair looks nice, but you had a perfect reference on an alt that already didn't look bad. It's nowhere near Crafted Yoshi bad, but it's still a change I couldn't help but wonder why they even thought of it. Shulk with different hair colors looks better imo, I think it's just Shulk himself not looking as good in Ult as he does in Sm4sh that might be influencing your decision there. '^^ (That said the Riki alt definitely looks the worst of the bunch with the different hair color; it just looks messy)
I always thought it would be cool for Samus if every alt was actually a different suit. Power, Varia, Gravity, Phason, Dark, Light, PED, Fusion etc. It just feels weird that the base design for her is from the most reviled Metroid game, Other M.

I’m forever disappointed that Cloud, or Sephiroth for that matter, didn’t get their KH1 outfits as an alt costume like they do in the Dissidia games

If they had to cut alts so Wario had 8, they should've cut the redundant red, blue, green, because his WarioWare alts already have those 3 colors, its as if the made Wario's alts before deciding character colors weren't bound to teams anymore, and didn't bother to change that in Ultimate, and doesn't help that the cut alts were from his Wario Land side, while those red, blue, green overall alts are just references to not Wario, but Mario (red-Donkey Kong/early Mario, green-Mario's Green Smash alt, blue-Mario Bros.), as if Wario's only 2d platformer was SML2, rather than properly representing WarioWare and Wario Land sides with 4 alts for each, its just 4 for WarioWare, 1 for Wario Land, and 3 for Mario...

Here’s an idea. What if the player was allowed to change certain colors on a character to make their own costumes in game. Such as making Mario, Luigi, and Wario’s overalls and hat different colors, for example. Then Nintendos premade costumes could be the ones the player couldn’t make themselves, like model swaps and also things like the Fierce Diety Link alt. Just an idea.

It recently came to my attention but I have to wonder why the hell does Snake not have Metal Gear's traditional Tuxedo as an alt costume in Smash Bros? It's the most recurring bonus outfit in the franchise and is typically unlocked as a reward for beating the game in a certain way. If it isn't in a game then it usually has an equivalent like the sunglasses in MGS2 (although it actually is in the Substance version of MGS2 for use in VR missions) or more commonly the suit in MGS4 and MGR.
It just makes so much sense as an alt costume for Snake, hell he even actually had it as an alt costume in that DreamMix TV game that he was in before Smash Bros.

I still dislike when people say "render" when referring to an alternative mesh. Every costume has a different render. Each costume is rendered in 2D.

Honestly giving everyone ten alts to choose from would be a great way to bring back some alts lost to time.
I felt like the Yin and Yang concept for an alt had yet to be explored, even with Ice Climbers or Pyra/Mythra, which is an alt I really want to see on a two-as-one character. And a lot of the Pokemon titles have sort of contrasting color schemes that, even though the reference wouldn't connect, would be a great opportunity to base alts for Ice Climbers and Pyra/Mythra off of, despite the two or three franchises being completely separate, wouldn't you say?

One change I'd make for Pokemon Trainer is swapping the pokemon colours for alts 3, 4 & 5, giving the green alt pokemon to alt 4 (the one with Leaf in Brendan's Emerald colours) to reference Pokemon Emerald, the pink alt pokemon to alt 5 (the one with Red in Lucas's colours) to reference Pokemon Pearl and give the yellow alt pokemon to alt 3 (the one with Red in Ethan's colours) referencing Pokemon Gold
I think that it would make sense if you had a costume creator where you get to choose a model and a color for each different aspect of the costume, and you can reply with the word yes or no or go in to greater detail if that is what you prefer.
I think characters the have female variations or age variations (like ike and kinda like Roy who was younger in melee) should have a thing like pythra where can press x to change to that alt, and to keep the 8 regular alts for each person. It’d lead to 16 different Alts for each character that has this ability, and likely would be pretty time consuming, but I think it’d be pretty cool
Edit: also, I think they should bring back zero suit Samus’ brawl design, idk what it is about it but I just think it looks better than the one she has now

I think the reason Mario has his green costume is because it’s a reference to the team matches, where in the past the color of your costume determined the color of the team you were on. In Ultimate, although your not forced to wear the color of your team anymore, the idea is still referenced with red blue and green, but now so is yellow. Because of this, every character (I believe, I’m too lazy to fact check) has at least (vaguely) 1 red costume, a blue one, a green one , and a yellow one

First character in and I already am concerned about Team matchups where originally the different colored characters were forced to change color to the team color back then. Removing said color would break a tradition. I actually use the green Mario costume whenever I play as I do like the color scheme; looking back at Super Smash Bros. 64, Mario's green color reminds me of the lime-orange Tic Tacs which honestly makes me like it more. 😂

Tbh I wish characters still required a red, blue, and green alt even if they aren't forced to use those colors for their respective teams anymore, I like using green alts, and there's characters that just don't have that color anywhere
I somewhat like the green Mario alt, but mostly I think replacing it with the Fire Mario alt would've just made the selection worse by virtue of having too much of one color scheme (that being red & white; seriously we'd then have the Golf, Fire, AND Wedding alts all using that color scheme). If I were to replace one for it, I'd replace the Golf alt because as nice of a reference as it is, I think Fire Mario is a much more iconic reference to keep than an old NES game's box art (then again I'm biased against that game since it's where the Luigi-Daisy shipping started).
For Link, I don't really mind losing the old tunics because most of them are still available on Young and/or Toon Link anyways.

Sheik in Brawl was apparently concept art either for TP or for Brawl itself, so the devs wanted to have an idea of Sheik in the TP style at least. More importantly, though, Sheik's outfit in Ult isn't JUST concept, it's actually strongly based on an actual set of clothes you can get in Breath of the Wild itself, the Sheikah Set (which can also be dyed in that game to be any color; thus matching most of Sheik's "referenceless" palettes anyways).
I'd honestly have liked seeing them pull a Ike on Ganondorf and give him both of his looks (OoT and TP), even if they'd have to have some creative liberties on the moves where he uses weapons.
Mewtwo's old green alt is ironically close to his shiny nowadays, making that potentially the reason it got cut in favor of the yellow alt referencing an old shiny. Ideally imo we'd have both, but this is The Pokemon Company, no fun is allowed. -_-

The purple wings in Pit's pink alt in Ult is a carryover of that old Brawl alt I think, though personally I'd rather they kept the pink outfit the same and replaced the "Dark" Pit alt with the old purple alt since Dark Pit himself is in the game anyways (and he himself deserves a better alt to replace his "Light" Pit alt too).
Speaking of Dark Pit, I kinda like the old yellow alt's wings more but keeping his hair black in Ult was the perfect call imo.
Seconded on ZSS. I understand why there's two blue ZS alts, since one is darker, but that's lame and I'd rather take that fancy purple one back instead, since sis would love it. Plus she already has a darker blue alt, that being her indigo shorts.
Wario I was thinking you could replace the blue overalls alt with the "sailor" Wario and the green overalls alt with the brown (Foreman Spike) one, to give it some extra color variety and to distinguish himself more from Mario (who has the same colors of blue and green even if reversed) in the process.
Brendan's Emerald color wasn't exactly "given" to Leaf, as it more commonly ressemble May's color in the same game. Not like it matters much since they're essentially the same character, but it's always worth keeping in mind.
I always assumed the "yellow" trainer alt in Brawl was meant to be a reference to the monochrome screen of the Game Boy, and thus the trainer's sprite. Why it's beige and not yellow, idk, maybe it's to not clash with their skin tone? Anyways this was rectified with a Selene alt for Leaf afterwards, so all's well.
(TPC's palette restrictions did my boy Lucario dirtier than the entire internet; and that's a competition I didn't think it'd win)

Robin I understand why they changed the blue palette's hair; it's more accurate to the default Kris, the player character from New Mystery of the Emblem.
In fact I'd say the same for green, as it now more accurately ressembles the sprite of Mark, the (optional) tactician player character from FE7.
But the red palette is definitely a huge WTF change imo. Sure the blonde hair looks nice, but you had a perfect reference on an alt that already didn't look bad. It's nowhere near Crafted Yoshi bad, but it's still a change I couldn't help but wonder why they even thought of it.
Shulk with different hair colors looks better imo, I think it's just Shulk himself not looking as good in Ult as he does in Sm4sh that might be influencing your decision there. '^^
(That said the Riki alt definitely looks the worst of the bunch with the different hair color; it just looks messy)
I always thought it would be cool for Samus if every alt was actually a different suit. Power, Varia, Gravity, Phason, Dark, Light, PED, Fusion etc. It just feels weird that the base design for her is from the most reviled Metroid game, Other M.
