- One of the easiest ways to make your opponent angry in super smash bros ultimate is to hit them with a taunt. A lot of these are fun little animations that are used to give your character more personality. Everyone in ultimate has 3, however over the course of the smash series several taunts have been changed or even cut entirely. So today I’m looking at smash 64, melee, brawl, and smash 4 to see which taunts were changed or cut in ultimate and if they are better or worse than what we have now!

Entirely offtopic but I played the prologue of Fire Emblem Awakening and Chrom dies in the first 3 minutes and it made me laugh
No worries! Health before anything and everything, and it was only a one day difference.
The worst cut in my opinion is Sonic's "You're too slow!" Taunt. Yeah, the voice line was changed, but "Sonic Speed!" Isn't really a taunt, just him saying something. The "You're too slow!" taunt is actually a taunt, like peaches singing taunt.
big missed opportunity to have sonic be the only character to be able to taunt in the air though

My favorite about Mario's previous neutral taunt is that if you played on special smash, made the characters big, give Mario a mushroom and perform the taunt, he'd get absolutely massive
I was sadly a 3DS Smash loser so I had no Special Smash :(
I never owned a Wii U (though honestly I’m not too sad over it - most of the games I would have played have sequels or ports on the Switch)
the biggest mario could get was special smash big modifier, lightning bolt misfire (big variant), and mario up taunt. i remember in the brawl days i would try to make mario as big as possible, so we did exactly that

They do still taunt in SSBU but it's rare.
"You're too slow" and "C'mon step it up" are PEAK disrespect and I'll forever be mad that they became so lame in Smash 4 onwards.
Also I've seen people say that Charizard's up taunt is supposed to be the same pose as his Pokemon Yellow sprite, and I can kinda see it.

Mario's taunt where he takes his hat off (pre-ultimate) is most likely a reference to the New Super Mario Bros series, where Mario takes his hat off at the end of a level, before putting it back on and heading into the castle.

Brawl players had an unofficial rule that you had to howl every time you launched someone.

I hate it. They made so many characters lose their cool by doin' this to 'em.
The Sonic section doesn't mention the very direct reasoning that he not only got a new voice actor (going from Jason Griffith to Roger Craig Smith) but also that Roger Craig Smith is a union voice actor and that Smash Bros. is a non-union product, with this leading to multiple characters from Kid Icarus being recast and Pit's voice staying the same but uncredited.
The only option they had for Sonic was reusing old voice lines recorded for Sonic games, and since Sonic never said "You're too slow!" outside of Brawl, there was no way to keep it.
A notable example of them reusing a voiceline is his Final Smash line being taken from the cutscene before the final boss in Sonic Generations.

16:25 Fun Fact: In case if you didn’t know, this taunt is based on Game & Watch Mario Bros which when this happens when if you get 8 bottles on the truck, it shows a little cutscene where Mario & Luigi are panting on the ground.
The shorter Kirby taunt also has the upside of allowing Kirby to get rid of his copied ability faster, so it actually has a Gameplay use!
14:50 the reason for Cloud and Sephiroth not having dubbed voices is actually because of issues with their voice actors being union actors.
Meanwhile, Jason Griffith was just credited under an alias in Brawl for the exact same reason.

marth's original japanese line actually translates well to what he says in ultimate. The down taunt in brawl and 4 roughly translates to "everyone, eyes on me," and "keep your eyes open" is close enough - although i wish he'd shout "eyes on me!" instead.
Yuri Lowenthal is also a _perfect_ voice actor for marth, and i am beyond satisfied with the choice.

Sonic's side taunt originally saying "you're too slow!" is the most in-character taunt in the series. Even if the devs wanted taunts to he shorter and cancelable, the line's short enough that it works. I _cannot_ think of a reason to switch it for a worse taunt. Sonic's side taunt is similar, but the line in brawl is long - so instead of "come on, step it up!" just chsnge it to "step it up!" or some variation of the phrase.

I have an idea to re-implement the Mario Grow Up taunt.
Have him crouch down to make him look like small Mario, then he’ll pretend he’s growing until he gets on his tippy toes with his fist up, to reference his jumping pose.

Mario's old side taunt is actually nearly identical to his animation in New Super Mario Bros when he reaches the flagpole. Idk if it's actually directly based on that, but it's pretty dang close
Most of these were cut because they messed with the hitbox of the character.
I miss Brawl Falco with his New Yorker accent. It's not AI as that literally didn't exist back then but ripping the files shows that it's cut up kinda like Ultimate Pikachu but it's way less noticable. Like you can tell they cut a few samples out of "Personally, I prefer the air!" in Brawl for example. What most likely happened was that the original takes were too slow and so they were all edited to fit the animations better.
Is this why Falco has this accent in the fanmade "A Fox in Space" series or did he always have it at one point?

Funnily enough, ALBW Zelda really didn't show much of the personality that Smash gave her. She was a little more serious.
If anything, it fits the Spirit Tracks or Minish Cap Zeldas more.
Funnily enough that's not actually LBW Zelda, that's a non-specific Zelda made entirely for Ultimate, mixing traits of several different incarnations.

Kirby's new up-taunt references Kirby in Super Star when he discards a copy ability, and it is the fastest way to discard a copy ability in Ultimate as well.

What I would suggest for game and watches 2 similar taunts is to combine them into 1 taunt, you can already do that by spam swatching 1 taunt into the other. Then we can have a new one or the cute hop back.

At 12:57, Captain Falcon isn't the only one that his taunts slightly change with the direction he's facing, it's also the case for Corrin, and maybe other characters

A fond memory of Melee that I have is going into the custom match mode to set all players to giant, playing as Mario, collecting a super mushroom, and then doing the up taunt to make the largest Mario possible.

Okay, the new Wolf taunt sparked such a funny moment for me! I was playing Ultimate with my sister when I went to do a taunt, and hearing him make such a strange noise was so funny that we now randomly go up to each other and just go "Nyaaa."

I feel like "You're too slow" was cut because it was becoming too much like "The cake is a lie".
Ask anyone what they remember about Brawl, and odds are, it'll be Sonic saying "You're too slow". Ask anyone what they remember about Portal, and odds are, it'll be the graffiti saying "The cake is a lie".
IIRC, according to the dev commentary of Portal 2, the writers at Valve were so bummed out by how memetic "The cake is a lie" became, they completely removed all references to cake in Portal 2, save for one throwaway gag. Ever since that one gag, cake has never been mentioned in the Portal-verse since.

2:19 Taunts were also likely shortened to keep matches flowing at a fast rate as the whole idea behind the Switch was combining console gaming with handheld gaming and many people were probably going to play with others on the go which required keeping the fights quick enough to be finished in a short time if need be. Kind of the same reason why the Final Smashes were mostly reduced to quick cutscene attacks too.
4:30 Given the short dev cycle Melee went through back then, I'd say this change was done for time crunch reasons more than anything.
I think the weird tone of Falco's voice in Brawl is either just hs voicelie's ripped strait from StarFox Asselt, where all the voices sound like there coming through a speaker phone, or it's supposed to be in reference to Lylatese, the gibberish that StarFox characters talk with in StarFox's 1 2 & Command (and in some version's of 64 for some reason)

Square Enix has mellowed out in crossovers, I think it just comes down to that they expect a DLC representation to boot.

Never knew Mike West voiced Fox in both Smash 4 and Ultimate. His delivery is so different in both games, you can really see his growth as a VA.

Another fact about Pac-Man's Namco Roulette is that Ultimate changed some of the sound effects for some games. For example, the Bosconian ship used to say Alert Alert in Smash 4, but it was changed to a laser fire sound effect from the game in Smash Ultimate.
16:26, Maybe Mr. Game & Watch's current Down Taunt can become his Short Down Taunt, with his Brawl one being his Long Down Taunt.
Project+ has short press and long press taunt variants, such as Kirby's classic "Hi!" sound as his short down taunt, and Ness's peace sign and camera flash as his short up taunt. Not to mention Mario gets a long down taunt in the form of the fireball serve and catch. Hopefully Nintendo can include this taunt system in a second edition of Smash Ultimate if possible.
The Mario side-taunt comes from New Super Mario Bros, where he does that animation after taking the flag at the end of a level
What marth is saying in the taunt is “Everyone, please keep watching me!” Which “Keep your eyes open!” Is a decent enough equivalent to. He’s telling you to pay attention.
