This song is about Eugene Shoemaker. He was one of the first Planetary geologist and he helped prove that craters on the Earth and Moon were made by meteor impacts. He discovered a comet that was monitored by NASA when it crashed into Jupiter. He was employed by NASA to train the astronauts in what they need to look for on the moon and was being trained as an astronaut when they discovered he had Addison's disease and therefore couldn't go. He died in a car crash in Australia and some of his ashes were carried on a probe which was to map the moon and then crash onto the moon. He is the only person to have his ashes on the moon. The poem was carved onto the urn that carried his ashes.

@@GOTGames When they recorded this, Floor was not quite satisfied with her performance even after several takes.
So when she got home, she had another go, and this is the result, from her home studio. She sent it to Tuomas and it was the version used in the album track.
The passage from Romeo and Juliet is read by Tuomas' wife, Johanna Kurkela - an amazing musician in her own right and partner with Tuomas and Troy in the band "Auri".

If you want to hear something that'll really make you gasp, try the acoustic version of 'How's the Heart'. This song is an Ode to the planetary geologist, Eugene Shoemaker. Check out who he is and how he die and was buried on the moon. The Shakespeare quote was etched on the capsule that held his ashes. you will then have much more understanding of the story behind this unique song.
I just saw Nightwish preform this song live on May 13th. It was incredible. Unfortunately, there is not a quality live recording of this song yet. This is from their latest record. They will soon be working on a new record for release in 23-24 probably.
Also Floor just announced the release of her 2nd solo single for May 27th. Her solo project is not metal, but still 100% Floor with all of the dramatic emotional vocal impact.

I was lucky enough to get one of the last three tickets to see NW in an old theater in San Francisco, just a few months ago. When they did this song and Floor KILLED the vocals at the end, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Especially mine. Nightwish fans have coined the term FLOOR-gasm to describe the emotional reactions she can give us with just the power of her voice. I wish my crappy phone footage was worth posting, but PLEASE look for a recent LIVE performance of this song. They are newly posted so they won't have a lot of views yet. Their last song in the set is 'Greatest Show On Earth' followed by 'Ad Astra' as they took their bows. Their bows were long, deep, respectful and humble, showing the class of these musicians and their respect for their fans, the arts, and the music they create. Tumoas supposedly has some solo stuff out that I NEED to find as he is a modern day Beethoven. A true genius composer. I know that you have already reacted to 'Greatest Show On Earth' HOWEVER, you need to see their end of tour performance of the song in their homeland of Tampere, Finland. Even if you don't do a reaction to it. It is beautifully filmed, high quality and with lyrics that teach us about the science of creation. If you think that NW has blown you away before, put on your seat belt. Plus, the emotional ending will make you love the band even more.

For the moment it is best to listen to the studio versions of the songs on this album, eventually there will be another live vid for the current tour but the whole album has lyric vids of similar quality plus a good MV (noise). Given that you love Nightwish why not just start with ‘Music’ the first track and working your way through to ‘`Endlessness’ the last individual track. Finally check out the final multi-part track which was a separate CD with its fan made video (endorsed by Tuomas). Honestly you will be blown away by it all. Normally Nightwish is better live but in the case of HumanIINature the lyric vids are best for now.

So thrilled to see another believer being born.
The first time I heard this work of art, was through a TH-cam reactor that gave the full background of Eugene Shoemaker. As a space junkie, I hadn't heard the full throated history of Gene, his aspirations and his untimely death and the place of reverence he holds for NASA and space exploration in general.
What NASA did for Shoemaker is beyond gratitude and appreciation. It borders on holiness.
Then the reactor played SHOEMAKER uninterrupted...
I was moved to tears, nearly sobbing by the time the outro began. Then and every time since. When I was finally able to get tickets to Nightwish in Denver Colorado, 15 May 22, I was like a teenager anticipating the arrival of something as epic as when the Beatles landed.
I have seen some grainy, fan recorded footage of NW performing this composition and held my breath waiting, hoping to experience it 'live'. But was also prepared to suffer the rest of my days without hearing their most emotive, complex and challenging masterpiece, IMHO.
The setlist was legendary and included GHOST LOVE SCORE, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH and SHOEMAKER.
In the middle of a sold out arena, sitting next to my son and 3950 fellow worshippers,
      I wept.
I'm 62, a military veteran, a well seasoned world traveler and seen hundreds of concerts that have included acts such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Rush, Metallica, Sir Elton John... many bands, genres, venues... tears aren't unheard of.
But since discovering Nightwish, it happens much more often. And, as a fellow fanatic, many Dreamers experience a similar phenomena.
And the revelation that is Floor Jansen??
      OMG!!
      She has numerous nicknames..
      THE VALKYRIE GODDESS
THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE OF VOCALS
Many names... but her talent, skills, and range are even more impressive.
I'm sure you've discovered a lot of her recordings and have some favorites, to be sure.
I have a few of my own. And if I may be so bold as to offer a couple you may not have heard yet...
You've just experienced my favorite, of them all, SHOEMAKER.
GHOST LOVE SCORE is a close competitor.
A duet Floor performs with one of her idols, Henk Poort, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
Another duet she recorded with her friend Tomas Englund of Evergrey, IN ORBIT.
A song she covers and recorded in her studio on her farm, OBLIVION.
And the list is long and glorious...

@@josephbishop3590 Wow, thank you for explaining all that about Shoemaker. I didn't know that. Might check out his story. I'm quite interested in gathering new information on topics I hadn't had much contact with. It's always cool to broaden your horizon. :-) That's why I like Lukes videos. He gives every artist a chance without superstitions blocking his way. Sadly that's rare nowadays.
Back to the topic at hand. It's nice to see you so passionate about a band and even more so when you are a seasoned man allowing his feelings to show. That's something great and should be supported. Noone needs toxic masculinity.
And don't worry. How could recommending songs you like be imposing? I'll check them out sometime. Well I did hear Ghost Love Score. That's not a song, that's a journey. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
What's even more amazing about Nightwish is that is is usually not my genre of music but I do like them. I saw a live footage of her performance at Wacken Open Air. That was extraordinary.

I just got back from a Nightwish concert and they performed this live. I’ve seen the live videos, but they don’t do it justice. At least until they have a professional filming/mixing crew at a large venue like Wacken or Wembley, the recordings I’ve seen have failed to accurately capture what this felt like live for one reason and one reason alone. Volume. Pure, unadulterated volume. The entire building shook when she hit that last note, and it felt like getting smacked in the chest with a wrecking ball. I’ve never felt anything else quite like it.

beautiful reaction...Nightwish is amazing band...Tuomas is a genious composer ..the metal Mozart..Floor is sublime soprano, this song is master piece of Tuomas, the part of the text of Romeo and Juliet is beautiful, but the part in latin LAUDATO SI AD ASTRA, is for me the most significant, laudato si means praise be to you, and ad astra means to the stars...it is the poem of San Francisco de Asis of assi wrote to nature, is a tribute to all of creation this brings tears to me eyes whenever i listen to it because i understand what Tuomas does what Shomaeker means he the man, the creature that dreams of the immensity of space and the creationof the universe..on fact he is buried on the moon, it is incredi ble what you feel when you understand all the meaning is amazing and very spiritual, to say that the world of Nightwish is magic is no enough for everything that their music give us...lucky that we can stil appreciate thim live.

We can’t know if this will be on the set list for the next tour, because then the songs from the next album will be the biggest part of the gig. Some of the songs on the current tour will be dropped.

A bit late but I just found your channel and am glad to see someone else falling in love with Nightwish. My 50+ christian mother actually got me into Nightwish and she loves it because it's a band she can actually sing along with. On a good day she can match Floor note for note, though she lacks some of the power.
Anyways as a reccomendation I have a few, mostly the ones we sing together in the car on long drives: Ghost river is a bit darker and have some more heavy metal influence. Ever dream starts off softer and has a more romantic side. I wish I had an angel, is basically everything your parent's warned you about whren it comes to metal. And finally Dark chest of wonders is refrenced in Storytime my absolute favorite and it's a song that stand on it's end more than well enough, hence why it was the opener for this show.
PS. Not sure if you know this yet but Floor was actually brought in as a last minute replacement and this is the first show she's ever done with the band I believe. It's also their best, unfortunatly Tuomas (songwriter and keyboardist) has left the band much to many of our dismay.

Nightwish are touring right now. Shoemaker is one of the songs off the newest album and they don't have an official live video yet for any of the new tour. Otherwise hell yeah the live version is incredible too and would be worth doing a video for. But for now, can't trust the rando phone video sound quality and it is better to wait until an official live...or until go to a show yourself. One other comment I have is more of a general suggestion for anyone somewhat new to this band: listen to Nightwish studio versions with good headphones, relax in the dark or with mood lighting and it is a glorious experience. They are best live simply because they are one of the best bands in the world but their albums are a different experience as well and should not be missed.

As far as I know there is no approved live version of this song (yet). The same goes for all other songs from their 2020 album Human:||:Nature with the exception of a live acoustic version (being Troy and Floor) of the song 'How's the Heart' for Planet Rock. The reason is rather dramatic but obvious: due to Covid-19 they had to postpone the Human:||:Nature Tour for 2 years. That Tour started some 3 weeks ago and the North America 'leg' will be finalized tonight in LA. Normally they pick out a few venues from each Tour to record their official live material but that will take some time to happen. If anyone knows which venues they'll pick this time, please feel free to add in a response.

Awesome reaction yet again! Two additional Nightwish songs that should definitely be on your radar are "7 Days to the Wolves" Live at Wembley and "High Hopes" from End of an Era. "7 Days to the Wolves" is an incredible and intense journey featuring some amazing vocals from Floor and Marko. Then "High Hopes" is one of the best covers you will hear. This one really shows Marko and Emppu at their best.

The musicianship, Floor’s voice, Troy’s voice, the lyric for the first part of the song are excellent in their own right. BUT it’s all an intro for LAUDATO. Your dropped jaw, followed by beaming smile, followed by almost a tear says it all. OMG, that was something, that was amazing. Yes you summed it up exactly. Apparently Floor does not really like operatic, but, when she does it she takes the universe with her. And, yes, Tuomas gave Floor a song ‘impossible’ to do live. Floor was not happy with the studio work, perfected it in her home studio, and then goes and does it live.

  • @majbrat

I really liked your verbal and emotional reactions, and I can see that you have an ear for beautiful music. What I don't understand about you Americans are your associations. Your comparisons to movie music, which I keep hearing in Nightwish responses. Europe has an infinitely long musical tradition and this is also used again and again in modern pieces. We Europeans find comparisons mainly to pieces of music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Ravel or the many other composers and less often to films. This is because film scores are usually also based on classical European music! It would certainly be an interesting listening experience for you, there is enough classical European music on the net. Thank you very much for your nice reply.
