      Times are changing. I read an article today about how "bands" are less and less popular and now young people don't want to be a part of a band, they prefer a solo career. In Spain the only "band" in the top 20 this week is AC/DC, the rest are solo artists. More individualism and divas who want to be famous than true artists ready to play in small venues and work hard...

    Very good job. A few things:
    - The instrument you heard is a hammered dulcimer and it is referred to in the song a few times.
    - The male vocalist is Troy Donockley, their multi-instrumentalist. Listen again and you'll hear Marko the bassist panned left and Floor panned right.
    - The song opens with the musical representation of a rocket taking off.
    - The drums at times are meant to sound like an asteroid bombardment as Shoemaker, among other things, studied craters.
    - The quote from Shakespeare was inscribed on Shoemaker's urn on the Lunar Prospector mission that was deliberately impacted in a crater named after him.
    - Floor had a year studying opera at the conservatory and a year of studying musical theatre in addition to four years of study at the Rock Academy. This training allows her to swing from opera to death metal screams and growls, plus cross genres with ease. She can go from a growl to opera in the span of a single note.
    - This song required a high level of vocal agility from Floor as well as extraordinary breath control to be able to sing those long, difficult phrases on a single breath.
    - Tuomas Holopainen is often referred to as the "Metal Mozart" and we can hear why in songs like this one.
    Now you need to hear Floor go over to the dark side. "Yours is an Empty Hope" Wembley 2015 th-cam.com/video/vyLsU7Q333k/w-d-xo.html

      I wouldn't like to guess at whether it is n actual acoustic hammered dulcimer or sampled and played through Tuomas' keyboard.
      If sampled, it is very well sampled. I can't tell and I've heard the real thing.
      Why would it not surprise me if Troy can play the hammered dulcimer? He does seem to be able to play just about anything he is called on to play, including some pretty unusual ones.

    • @billattercliffe8655
      @billattercliffe8655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@phillee2814 I've thought the same thing - can't tell if it is real or sampled. The one thing we have to recognize though, the mind capable of considering the use of a dulcimer in a metal song.

      @@phillee2814 I could imagine where there would be a perfect setting in a large cathedral, where Tuomas plays the grand pipes, Troy a harp and our Floor growling!

    • @phillee2814
      @phillee2814 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@R---66---R I much prefer growls reserved for occasional effect - like in Ghost River - as a contrast to otherwise clean vocals with and without fry - and Floor has enough range of textures in her voice for you never to know what is coming even then!
      I'm not sure how well cathedral acoustics would work with a drumkit, either. Guitar would probably be fine, although faster passages might become jumbled.
      Traditionally constructed cathedrals are built as huge sounding boxes, to allow an unamplified human voice to reach a large number of people, but you have to do it slowly and enunciate very clearly for it not to become a fog of echoes. Music has to move slowly between keys with carefully crafted transitions to avoid becoming a discordant mess.
      That is why, to modern ears, traditional church music sounds rather predictable, slow and even ponderous.

I went to see them live this past May in NYC. I knew most of their catalog. I had seen most of the songs on TH-cam so many times. I thought I was prepared. Then this song was in the set list and I didn't know it. I was not prepared. It came to the operatic part at the end, and it was of a scale of sound 10x this studio recording. The degree of depth, feel, compositional breadth and creativity, execution cohesiveness, musicianship and artistic expression in Nightwish's art form (notice I did not use the word songs as it fails miserably to convey any meaning) is staggering. Every lyric, cord and key shift is meticulously planned and executed and supported by meaningful and worth-exploring lyrics. Nothing is done in vain. Everything has its place in the whole structure. Every single one of them is a world-class musician/vocalist but they all check their egos at the door and solely serve the music and its needs. We, the lucky ones who discovered them early on in the 90s, have been spoiled rotten to the point that it is almost impossible to listen to any other music without making the comparison and realizing that the pastures are always more lush and greener in Nightwish musical land.

    OK. I fought it the whole time, but when you said of Shoemaker's family, "Now they have this song," there were tears. Nice reaction. And, it's kind of brilliant that you remembered who Shoemaker was without a ton of research.

    To experience more of their range you might next listen to three more songs from this album:
    "Harvest" --> Folk
    "Tribal" --> Heavy
    "Pan" --> Wild Ride

    A few facts on the table:
    Yes this is a masterpiece - and there are more in that category coming your way 😉
    The ending, Floor going operatic - Floor and Tuomas recorded it several times before they were ok with it. Then Floor went home to Sweden - but she didn't have the right gut feeling. So she rehearsed it again, recorded it in her homestudio, sent ir to Tuomas, blew his head clean off as usual - and this is the ending you hear on the record. Floor is even more of a perfectionist than Tuomas - she just pratice, rehearse and keeps on until she is satisfied with her own performance.
    What an artist.
    Next one as a natural follow-up on this one:
    1. Google "The Greatest Show on Earth", the book by Richard Dawkins, and read the description.
    2. The Greatest Show on Earth, Tampere 2015 - this song is the book, 4,6 billion years of evolution in 24 minutes - THAT'S a masterpiece as well....
    3. Stay on until the video is completely finished - the speaking afterwards are an important part of the song - and it is Richard Dawkins speaking!!!
    ***
    Tuomas, Troy and Floor all wanted to be Biologists when they grew up - and Marko is a lengend in Astronomy and evolution, like the 3 others.
    Tuomas is not just writing songs - the songs (wrapped in poetry), have deep thoughts underneath - and Floor is not just singing a song - she is performing a story - she is the combination of the music and the lyrics on stage.
    These 6 people are artist, performing as one "unit" - no one overdoing anything - and everything is done intentionally to give the audience the perfect experience.
    But you will experience this on your Nightwish journey into the Nightwish Universe.
    Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰 👍 💪 🤘 🤘 🤘

    Why it was named Shoemaker? You would need a better understand of Nightwish and their history and beliefs. You will get that understand from listening to more of their music and doing a little reading about them. I started listening to them about 7-8 months ago. They started back in 1996, and I wondered why I had never heard of them. I still don't know why, but I am glad that I have now. My best description is that they are a "thinking persons symphonic metal group". They manage to evoke emotions that surprise you overwhelmingly. Continue your experience with them and your appreciation will grow. Like it or not, you may find a tear or two from time to time.

    Tuomas Holopainen the keyboardist and the main music composer paints musical masterpieces. He's considered a modern day Mozart, but I also like to think of him as the offspring of Leonardo da Vinci. It also doesn't hurt to have a magical paintbrush in Floor. As far as I'm concerned her vocal talents/versatility, stage presence and emotional delivery of every word she sings make her a living legend.

    It is about Eugene Shoemaker indeed, the text is read bij Thuomas his wife and it's the text on Shoemakers urn wich is buried on the moon (in the Shoemaker crater part of his ashes) but you haven't heard anything because Floor can do death growls too (yours an empty hope) till what you've just heard and everything in between....Nightwish is next level music and greatest show on earth live at Tempere would be your great next song have fun and enjoy the Nightwish train
