  • Being yourself is a struggle many people have experienced. It is hard to not fear the judgement others may thrust upon you when you expose your inner identity. It is even more difficult to overcome this fear. Steven Jacobs knows this struggle well and shares his story of coming out as gay in the hopes of motivating others to know that there is no wrong way to be yourself. Steven Jacobs is a first-year student at the University of Miami, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Spanish. Steven was born in Massachusetts and raised in Wyckoff, New Jersey with his three older siblings Alyson, Kevin and Ryan. Throughout high school, Steven ran track, wrote for the school’s newspaper, and participated in ‘Best Buddies’. Steven continues to participate in ‘Best Buddies’ at the University of Miami, a cause he is passionate about. Steven plans to attend law school after college, aspiring to be a human rights lawyer. Over the past year, Steven has ‘come out’ to his family and friends. While this has been a difficult process, he believes that others can benefit from hearing his story. By telling his truth, he hopes to help others find their courage and embrace themselves. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

“On March 17, St Patrick’s Day I decided to come out to my mom.”
    I can see it now.
“Mom, this is hard but I’ve got to tell you something. I’m... a... leprechaun!” 🍀 🌈
