  • Brett Trapps gives a poignant talk about coming to terms with being gay in a deeply religious community in the American south with a surprising realization about himself and the community.
Brett Trapp recently left Corporate America to pursue his dream of becoming a writer and storyteller. He shares stories of self-discovery and identity on www.BlueBabiesPink.com which is inspired by his experience of coming to terms with being gay in the American south.
Previously, at Booster Enterprises, Trapp led a team of creatives that developed motivational character content for more than 1.3 million students annually.
Trapp believes in the power of good design, Seth Godin, SEC football, Chick-fil-A, Taylor Swift, Tarantino movies, and CS Lewis. He serves on the boards of directors for Beloved Atlanta, Refuge Coffee and the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Amazes me how easily religion has condemned LGBT while at the same time completely ignore horrific main stream sins, apparently God only has a problem with a few sins that the religions choose for Him.

Religion does nothing. People do. Religion is not some metaphysical entity. And people have differing views on topics.

The details are different, but that describes a lot of how I grew up. It would have helped so much to be able to talk to someone or have positive experiences of what it was to grow up discovering you're gay, instead of being afraid or getting rejected or beaten up for it from kids your age, and not being able to talk about it with otherwise loving, faithful parents. -- Something is wrong when people would fear or hate or exclude a boy for loving his frien or forbidding even to think of it or discuss it. Stifling that love inside damages people's lives. How many grow up missing such an important part of their lives, the chance to love someone deep down?

Thank you for your courage. And yes, I've just come across you talk... I, too, had so much fear. What my husband and I have discovered is that no matter what people say, they need a name and a face to attach to a "label". Once they discover the "label" belongs to a person they love a huge shift takes place in their thinking. Thank you for speaking your truth!

I've visited the South a couple of times. They may appear kindly, but it's a perfunctory kindliness. A thin veneer. Under the surface, the real truth is that everyone is suspicious of everyone. Especially of outsiders. Everyone is checking to see who is and isn't obeying the social expectations, and gossiping about it.

We’re not going to bend to your unreasonable and immoral views while we only request the equal protections extended to us under the law and us to be treated equally(both able to be reasoned and made to correct an immoral wrong). "Your truth" is deceiving you my friend. God loves you and all who choose or refuse Him. But His truth is always the truth NO MATTER if we chose to believe it or not. He is a righteous and honorable God, who will not be mocked. There will be real consequences to our willful sin. His love is unconditional but his blessing are conditional.
