      Trying to decide between Canon R6 + 24-105mm f/4 L, or Nikon Z6 with 24-70mm f/4. Prosumer, stepping into mirrorless from Nikon D7500, and interested in low light cityscape, some landscape, and casual available light portrait shots. Which one would you recommend?

      20 megapixels is not enough for a camera in 2022 or even 2020 for that matter. and then they increase 25 megapixels for the R5?! But you can spend $1500 and get a 30 mp full frame in the R? 30mp should have been the standard for the R6, the only reason not to make that the standard would be that no one would want to purchase the R5, so they handicapped the R6. Let alone the fact they did not need to change the mounting hardware in order to improve performance, they could have kept the EF mount and improved the software components for a line of mirrorless lenses. I have been a canon loyalist for 15 years but Canon can get bent as far as I am concerned. I am going over to Sony.

      @@Yupthereitism R6 build quality is not close to the 1DX. IQ is identical with the 1DX mk iii and I can't see differences to the 1DX mk ii. The R6 AF system is more advanced and better than the 1DX in most cases though the 1DX may be better in a few cases. I haven't used my 1DX mk ii much since I got a R5 with grip more than a half year ago and I recently got a R6 as secondary camera w/o grip. I think the R6 is a better camera than the 1DX for many people though the 1DX is better if you are using the camera in harsh environments.

    You should know that the excessive focus on video features related to still cameras has been and continues to be very annoying to those of us millions who are very primarily stills shooters. This kind of bias in evaluations is very evident from many many TH-cam sources I believe because while they claim to be photographers they are in fact videographers as evidenced by the importance of their TH-cam productions for them personally in generating income. While no doubt hybrid performance is wonderful to have and for some professionals perhaps a requirement, the reality on planet Earth is that HD Video IS still not available even at broadcast on local televisions most of the time. HD television is not, even after all these years truly dominant. This is true for the giant vast majority of those who subscribe to Internet services. SO the emphasis on 4K IS really quite a truck load of total bullshit for most people, not to mention all the computer power and screen resolution and such just to deal with it. I thank you from NOT being Tony and Chelsea, nor the Fro, nor even Peter Gregg (God bless him). All one needs to do is LOOK at the current trend in FILM photography to see -guess what - people do indeed value still photography very much. Thanks for your review that has meaning to those especially who wish to raise shadows and recover highlights and focus on subjects who move and capture a still photo. As for the video mavens out there - buy a video camera and stop complaining that you can't get a cheap alternative from a camera company that wishes to destroy and cannibalize its market during a giant downturn in the industry just to satisfy your lustful ego-centric navel gazing camera desires. There, I have said it. I am sick of you "equal outcome" people. Cameras are all different, just like people, do NOT expect them all to cough up the outcomes equally to server your purposes. Be a real diversity person and shed your video-privilege attitudes - and you know who you are!! Go ahead go march on Canon, don't forget to pick up your marching orders from Portland-video.

      @@cameralabs Great review. The camera looks great. My only concern was the 20megapixel sensor. But I think its enough. I usually dont crop that much. I waited this long because my glass is canon - and I dont have the possibility to trade in canon lenses for sony lenses. So I've been waiting these 2 professional models. The r5 is too much for my budget, but the r6 is manageable.

  • @geek-elite
    @geek-elite 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really appreciate these reviews, especially for the R5 and R6, because they highlight the strengths of the cameras without over-weighting the video performance in the overall judgement. I'm about a 90% stills shooter and have been a Canon shooter for a very long time, and these reviews have really helped me to understand that an R5 or R6 would be a phenomenal upgrade to my current setup and basically perfect for my primary use case. So many of the other reviews approach them from a 50/50 stills/photo - or even a straight video-first - perspective, and haven't really given me a good feeling about their stills capability.
    Thanks for these reviews. They have been very, very helpful.

      @JohnDrummondPhoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@JonathanAyers Any full-frame body will be better for real estate than a crop sensor, because you'll maximize the coverage of wide-angle lenses. The R6 should be way better than a 7D Mark II for your purpose; but so would an R or even an RP.

    • @JonathanAyers
      @JonathanAyers 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Drummond, yeah. It was originally for what I love and that’s wildlife. Real Estate kinda became the thing that paid for that hobby and now actually because a business.
      Considering the R5 or R6 for photography and some light video. Looking mostly at the dynamic range to decrease editing time and number of photos taken. We shall see! They’re spendy!

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JonathanAyers My GAS followed a similar path. Got the 7DMII for wildlife; then got into landscapes and realized I needed both more MP and wider field of view. Hence, the 5DM4. Better image quality and more features by far than the 7DM2; but heavier, with slower (and much noisier) burst. It's not a great wildlife body IMO.
      Now I've started doing video too. So, the R6 seems to be perfect for upgrading from the 7DM2. I'm keeping the 5DM4 until a really high MP body comes out.

The RF lenses are obviously the eventual future but I was not sufficiently impressed with the RP or the R to deploy hard earned cash. Then the R5 and 6 came along. But which one? I've got video cameras so what I'm mainly looking for is high end still photography with some useful video capability in reserve. That sounds very much like the R6 except that I'd now like to shoot mainly landscapes. Problems problems! Your suite of non-OTT (Oh my God it caught fire) review videos are extremely helpful both to me and I would think many others. Hi Gordon, fellow coffee nerd here. Thanks for yet another refreshingly calm, factual review. I love the seperate reviews for stills and video. Concerning the R6 - over at dp review they have a great comparison module, where you can crossreference resolution and ISO performance for up to 4 cameras (I'm sure you know it). I spent quite some time there before deciding to get the R6 and it indeed holds it's own in terms of resolution, especially in the corners. It is food for thought, if the consistency over the ISO range it delivers isn't of siginificantly more value in day to day operation, opposed to a camera that resolves a tad higher at base ISO but rapidly deteriorates under non ideal conditions. After all, other than for studio photographers, non ideal conditions are rather the norm than the exception.
    Keep up the great work mate - enjoy your coffee :)

    Gordon! Thank you for the great video! It is very complete. I am burnt out on the subject overheating. 8K video crippled a high-end Macbook as well as a new $11,000 Apple desktop. So I won't be really using this camera for video except for little 8 second clips here and there on vacation. It's interesting that 60% or less battery slows the shutter. Is this something that has happened on other cameras? It's not that big of a deal, just surprising. And please continue the "stills only" reviews and keep 8K overheating videos for other click-bait & royalty-free-dubstep-laden channels. I think a lot of viewers are interested in AF performance, as this camera is a major leap forward. THANK YOU!

      @@scrollop there's a specific camp of ppl who keep swapping cameras for the specs. However, i was told that alot of the ppl who recently traded in the Sony's were long-time Canon users who wanted a competent mirrorless offering from Canon, and now they have it in the R5.

    The R5 with the sensor of the R6, two CF Express slots and a built in battery grip would be perfect for me. For me having a top display is essential. Even the cheaper EOS R had that. I hate it when Canon make a camera artificially worse just to make people buy a higher priced camera that has a resolution I do not want. In the Sony A7 line up, the camera with the lowest resolution is the most expensive, but the R5 and R6 suggest that having more megapixels makes a camera more premium. That is sooooo 2005.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just curious, why do you need a top display? There's far more information "all at once" on the rear display. Obviously, if you prefer the display to a mode dial (I would too) then that makes sense.

    • @skyscraperfan
      @skyscraperfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cooloox I am used to my old DSLR which displays all important camera settings at the same time on the top display. The top display does not consume very much power. That is especially important on a mirrorless camera, where battery life is one of the major problems. Also most of the bottons to change the settings are on the top. I am not a fan of touch screens. I prefer physical buttons instead of a touch display.

    I always appreciate your reviews, thorough but accessible. When my budget allows this is on my list as a hobby photographer who photographs a lot of dog sports and is looking to get in to mirrorless from a 7D with a good number of EF-L lens lineup. The focus system, IBIS, FPS burst and dynamic range are all spot on for my needs. The split review you did worked great for me, since I’m not a huge hybrid photo/video user. The sharpness and ISO comparisons to multiple cameras were great to see. Cheers and thank you for the great content!

    I hope the R6 starts a better trend of lower res. There are too many overkilling high res cameras out ther that you never get any benefit from, but you still need to endure the huge file size and slower operation. Remeber, 4K is only about 8M pixel, 20M pixel is more than sufficient. Most people only look at your photos from their tiny phones. Focus, lens, low light performance have much more influence on image quality.

    Excellent review it's good to see the focus tracking is also great for BIF. A very tempting camera. I think though for the ultimate wildlife cropability the R5 I'm a little more swayed by. I will have to wait for grey market to the UK as I'm not mug enough to pay the £4200 while the US $3800 thats approx £2900 and other select countries pay massively less.

    Thanks for the excellent and thorough photography review. The $2499 R6 is a steal compared to the $3899 R5 IMO and Im quite surprised Canon didnt cripple it as they did the 6D vs the 5D series. As a portrait shooter who owns an RP, Im just not sure about the upgrade. Im thinking that $2500 would be better spent towards the RF 85 f/1.2 or the upcoming RF 85 f/2 and the RF 50 f/1.2 However, the improved sensor, much improved eye AF, IBIS, two card slots and much bigger battery are compelling reasons to get the R6. Decisions, decisions....

    I think the firmware upgrades since this review may have improved the faster burst rate inasmuch as the rate now appears to drop when it reaches 25% battery remaining. I shoot almost exclusively wildlife so am seriously considering the R6 for its fantastic AF and fps.

    Thank you so much for this review. I am very tired of seeing so many reviews of Cameras which are sometimes even 100 percent about the video capabilities. It seems as though some reviewers get so caught up in the video performance of a stills camera that they actually completely forgot that it is a stills camera. It's very frustrating, so to have reviews which purely focus on the primary objective (still photography, and taking photographs, believe it or not) of a Camera, is great. Thanks!

    Great review. Im my opinion, ALL reviews should be like this. When video is mixed in it almost always slants towards vloggers and video spec much more than stills. I have never pushed the video button on any of my cameras and seeing this aimed at stills shooters is refreshing indeed
    One thing I was waiting to see with this R6 was the ability to crop substantially and the results in terms of resolution. I do this quite a lot and also want to print the cropped shot at A3 and A3+
    This is the one thing I am very wary about and could be a deal breaker - is it something you tested Gordon?
