I don't know about the R5, but I would definitely mention the fact that the Z8 can record raw video directly to the card and no Atomos Ninja is needed. That's great news for video makers.
The R5 can also record 8K raw internally. But I think the Nikon has more options. But as I mentioned, the video was mainly about the photo features as I‘m not an expert in video 🙈
Great, fair review. I’m a long time Nikon shooter so when upgrading from D850 the Z8 was a great choice for me. But I have friends shooting the R5 and they love it as well. If you can’t get wonderful images with either the problem is not the camera.
Fabian. I must say, your comparison of the two cameras was so detailed and spot on. At least from a Z8 shooter point of view. Your Z8 insight can only come from someone who has actually taken the time to learn the system. Even your description of the R5 is spot on to all the videos I’ve watch. I love the tech wars and watch as many different camera videos as I can. Competition, is good for all brand shooters. I shoot lossless compression 14 bit on my Z8. Card choice for Z8/Z9 is really important. My one Sony Tough Card doesn’t work well, but the Delkin Black is a speed Demond. What a great video… Keep them coming. As you mentioned there are a few situations where the Z8 AF struggles. Maybe Nikon will see your video and push an AF firmware!
I think Nikon Z8/9 they both have smaller buffer but have higher write speeds so they more rely on and benefit from faster CFeB cards, whereas Canon R5/R6/R3 have bigger buffer but slower write speeds, so are not as much sensitive to card performance as Nikon. What I mean, is that having Delkin Black CFeB car or similar is more beneficial with the Nikon cameras for sustained high fps over more than few seconds vs the Canon, which gives very similar fps until it hits the buffer and only then, when flushing the buffer, you have some benefit from faster cards.
I'm trying to decide between these 2 cameras and found this review invaluable, you've picked up on nuances that I haven't seen mentioned on any other reviews. One thing about Nikon is they are committed to AF upgrades via firmware.
I was able to try a z9 for a week recently, with the new Bird AF/Firmware. Definitely better than before, but still.... not quite as good/consistent as R5. Was getting stuck on background yet, like said in this video. Or seemed to take alot more work vs. Canon. I am hopeful they will continue to improve as well/add it to Z8. The Z9 was very nice overall, but the AF kept me away yet.
Nice balanced review, Fabian. As a Z8 and Z9 shooter, I get that the Canon may be better, at least incrementally, on certain features, whereas the Nikon is probably better on others. For me, I speak Nikon, not Canon, so the ergonomics of the Z8/Z9 made me feel at home. Although initially my stable of f-mounted lenses also played a part with my staying with Nikon, in that I could use them on the Z cameras with the FTZ Adapter, once I started acquiring Z lenses, I was hooked by their sharpness and autofocus improvement versus the f-mount lenses. But, really, both the Nikon and Canon cameras are capable of shooting wonderful images. While I love the improvements of the Z8/Z9 ( versus my former D850 and Z7ii), my working on my skills and technique as a photographer and understanding the capabilities of these wonderful technical marvels is probably the most important consideration. Someone better skilled and with a better eye than me will probably shoot images under the same circumstances with an old Nikon D810 that I would wish that I had taken with my more advanced camera. But, I keep practicing. 🙂

Heck yes, but live with the 10fps of the Sony.
I share the same thoughts, I have the R5 and the R6 mk2 and beside the 100-500 I don't see many middle range lenses (price / performance). Nikon here has a big advantage and sometimes make me have wish to switch system
I find my Z8 can tracks with subject detection brilliantly. I was tracking a dog and it was running away from the camera and it was tracking the back of its head no problem. So I find it interesting it can track dogs and birds heads when its not looking at you but has a problem detecting a birds face through some light grass. Really hope that can be made better in firmware.
@@bladerealm124 Better than ever. Nikon claims it can track a birds eye thats only 3% the size of the frame and it seems very true. It works better when birds fly behind trees and foliage. Yes, it’s a massive improvement. I made a video about the 4.0 firmware for the Z9. I found that the v2.0 on the Z8 and v4.0 on the Z9 perform basically the same. Amazing what Nikon did there

It depends…. At 20fps the Z9 will have an advantage. To get full dynamic range out of r5 you’ll need to be a slower frame speeds using the mechanical shutter. I think r5 is better a highlight recovery, z8 better at shadow recovery. 2 stops is excessive.
Thank you for the methodical and thorough review. I especially appreciate information about how the performance changes with ISO variation and mechanical vs electronic vs first curtain shutter. Looking at images at 100 ISO is a great start point to but in practise not many bird in flight photos at 600mm and fast shutter speed will be going to be at ISO100. Hi, thank you for this comparison video, nice one! I'm currently on the fance of buying Nikon Z8 or maybe I should wait until Sigma releases its long awaited camera with Foveon Sensor. Could you upload one second of Nraw clip, if you please?
It's stupid easy to discern which to get. The Z8 will adapt more lenses. It will do AF-S, EF, and E mount. It also will have autofocus with manual lenses via the Techart TZM-02. There is no contest, only the winner that shoots internal RAW video that loads right into Resolve.
@@FabianFoppNaturephotography No. What's that supposed to tell me? EF glass is going to work on both. Might work better on Canon, dunno, but that's not the point. The Z8's lens choices are VAST as compared to what you can put on an R5 and honestly, one modem lens is going to render a lot like the next one, so with the R5 wholly unable to have AF with so many interesting manual character lenses, it's simply does less, much less.
Just saying, for BIF there is a huge difference between the Z8 + Z600/4 to the R5 + EF600/4. The R5 + RF600/4 is on a whole different level. So I‘m kind of wondering if the EF lenses would be fast enough for small and fast flying birds
I would not disagree that some RF lenses are fantastic. I would use a Nikkor Z S lens to compare against an RF though. EF lenses that Canon rated to work well with the 5DS are great on the R5 and other cameras with high MP. I couldn't take the R5 over one lens. The Z8 autofocuses my entire manual lens collection via TZM-02. It works so well that I ditched modern lenses for most purposes. So an R5 would be crippled for my workflow without AF on manual lenses to do with them what cannot be done without AF. @@FabianFoppNaturephotography
Why choose from 300 lenses when most people only have 3 lenses. It's about quality. Plus using my EF lens with the ND adapter is unmatched. Its like having internal ND filters. And Nikon dont have a 2.0 28-70 or a 2.8 24-105. They don't have a control ring on the lens that gives my camera 4 dials compared to Nikon's 2 dials. Make my camera faster and easier to operate. Unless you plan on buying all those lenses who cares about if they can fit on your camera or not.
I don't care about any spec if I don't like the experience. Canon annoys me with their clicky shutter release button. Nikon soft shutter button is so pleasant, it's almost sensual.
@10:12 can you stop making your vogue/misleading statements like rolling shutter example? It’s only an issue when you shoot electronic mode which has plenty of other issues . When you shoot mechanical your stacked sensor is irrelevant👎
Hi! I‘ve taken over 250‘000 shots with my R5s. If you want full speed (20fps), you risk rolling shutter. In mechanical you are limited to 12fps if the battery is fully charged, afterwards it drops to around 9fps. I would indeed appreciate if comments here would stay nice and polite

Ok, that’s really a non-issue for me
Nikon has been really hitting it out of the park lately with their lenses.
Yes, definitely! My review of the Z180-600 is coming soon
R5 will be GREAT for making Toast >> but then I have an appliance Toaster so Make mine a Z7III (When its announced ) or a Discounted Z9
Haha, why for making Toast? I think both are great cameras
grow up man
Z8 all day
Have fun with the camera

Neither!!
Which one do you have?
@10:12 can you stop making your vogue/misleading statements like rolling shutter example? It’s only an issue when you shoot electronic mode which has plenty of other issues . When you shoot mechanical your stacked sensor is irrelevant👎
Try being a bit friendlier.
@@FabianFoppNaturephotography polite what? You mislead people and want them to be polite about that?
I mentioned that this is
an issue in the electronic mode. Maybe it was not clear enough for you
