      I just wish they will go for a more aerodynamic Ioniq 7 SUV, i hate the "GAS CAR" frontal area that it has, it is basically an awfull brick for me, i hope they do something like the 5, but scaled up and streamlined for EV, because if you have efficiency, you cheapper have range. (Something that Tesla knows)

    Hyundai/Kia is doing all the things GM promised to do, but didn't.
    Of all the legacy automakers, Hyundai/Kia is winning the EV transition.
    Korean drive, engineering, and focus are impressive.
    Most other legacy automakers are sinking in quicksand.

      @lkuhn65 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      They have had a "challenger mindset" from day one, when they entered the US market in the 80s. IMHO, they can't be grouped with "legacy".

    • @michalvaner3167
      @michalvaner3167 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@lkuhn65 I'm not sure about the challenger mindset (might or might not), but I see another thing I value greatly about them. I suspect the engineers there have more say (compared to other companies). That is, they get more freedom to design a car they themselves would want to buy and drive compared to just getting an assignment. I don't really have a proof of that, more like an intuition for it (as an engineer myself). Like, getting rid of that 400->800V voltage pump … it's not something someone ever gets as an assignment, but if if you're an engineer trying to squeeze that thing somewhere into the car and start wondering if you can actually throw that crap out to make your life easier, another one in the room says „Hey, hold my beer…“.

      Fully agree with your comment. Met Albert Biermann last year and he spoke about drivetrain development. He was for 30 years heading BMW M-Sports. He was enthusiastic about a lot of highly motivated young engineers that sized the chance making something new like at Tesla and not all the others. As China is very close they also knew what to make different. So the group started also cooperating with Rimac-Bugatti and Porsche or engaged the very best in design worldwide, who designed from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lamborghini and Bentley all that had once a good name out of boring and emotionless cars, e.g. typical SUV! So also working from scratch to prototypes and showcars that go more or less unchanged in production is a sensation. Stellantis e.g. had many attempts from young engineers to make something new but they never realized more than boring mass products. With a very good EV platform you nearly can do anything what a special segment of market wants and still make profits. Of course that the Tesla approach is more profitable but the market also wants beautiful cars out of the mass and Koreans are ready to sell. See EV9, EV6 and coming EV4, IONIQ 5 & 6, Genesis GV60 etc. All very unique and different but recognizably 🤓🇨🇭

    Fantastic review !!! Have been a hyundai fan for years, owned 4 different ones, and all limited . 4 cylinder turbo on the Santa fe sport was the best engine. But hoping they do something with the palisade, possibly hybrid or all ev. Loved my palisade, but the engine was a little old school. Would like to see them step up in that area.

      I found an article from The Journal of Sound and Vibration: "On the study of wavy leading-edge vanes to achieve low fan interaction noise" from 2018. The abstract indicates that they found improvements in both aerodynamics (efficiency) and acoustics (sound levels) for a wavy blade vs the basline fan blade. Both are desireable for an EV. I expect we will see more fans like this going forwards.. and more experimentations with fan shapes going forwards.

    Worth noting that road wheel torque (ie tractive effort) is not generally higher for a BEV than for an ICE because the BEV lacks a multispeed gearbox! A typical 2.0 tdi engine knocks out "just" 400Nm at the crank, but stick in a torque convertor (2x mult), 1st gear (4 or more times mult) and final drive ratio (4 time smult) and axle torques are of course very similar in reality. The ICE also has hugely greater torsional vibrations to deal with, requiring things like dual mass flywheels and cush rings in the propshafts etc, whereas the BEV has a very smooth output in TV terms. Shock loadings are also possible to accurately calibrate out or avoid for the BEV, whereas an auto or especially manual transmission ICE can generate shock loadings of at least the same magnitude as the static engine torque.

    Great review! haha from my perspective "dead space" in a vehicle is great, because then you finally have a place you can reach stuff when servicing the vehicle.
    Modern cars have become a nightmare to service because there are almost never enough space for hands, tools or the part you are replacing. Forcing you to disassemble way too much when doing maintenance, which results in complicated and time consuming maintenance that cost a lot of money.

    I was very interested to see what you thought of the Ioniq 6 as I'm seriously considering getting one later this year. I'm also seriously considering the BYD Seal (as it's going to be named in Europe) so is this on the list for a hoist review? I'm thinking the engineering and build quality of the BYD may not be up to the high standard set on the Ioniq 6 ........ but I may be wrong?

      One significant difference between Tesla and the Chinese/Koreans is the battery management systems - particularly heating/cooling.
      Nyland shows the large deltas on battery temperatures which has a marked impact on long distance travel - cold/heat gateing.
      Something Munro does not feature.

    • @johnross6314
      @johnross6314 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Go with the gold standard today and in the future. Tesla. Not time to experiment with your money on ChiCom experiments. Behind the shiny veneer of BYD is something you are not seeing. Warren Buffet who hates E. Musk, had wads full of cash in BYD, cut their holdings by 76% (and still selling more quietly little by little) Sure they made some profit. However, their bragging rights are to hold the right stock for decades with wild returns.
      Point is, BYD here today, gone tomorrow. Like Daewoo who was thought to be the top Korean player years. Except for the loyalists, people were not repeat buyers. If you want to go EV, Tesla.

      After a bit of searching it looks like this may be the design used widely by Hyundai/Kia since 2008, with the large-diameter and axially short splined interface between the hub's inboard end and the outer CV joint, rather than the traditional small-diameter and axially long splined interface which goes right through the hub. It would be interesting to see how the CV joint is held onto the hub in that case. If it's a new design, that would be even more interesting to see.

  • @michalvaner3167
    @michalvaner3167 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I'd note that there's another advantage of using the invertor for the 400->800V conversion. If you have a dedicated module, it costs more if you use a more powerful one, so you have to make a compromise between charging fast at a 400V charger and the cost of the module ‒ ending up with limits of 50kW, for example (I believe there were some Taycans with that limit). So a 100kW 400V charger is not that great for the car. If you use the invertor, it's the power limit of that invertor and that one is likely much higher already.
    For similar reason, I'd really like them to abuse the invertor as the AC onboard charger too. There's a lot of 22kW plugs around here and some 43kW plugs from time to time 😈 (yes, Europe with 3-phase).

  • @patreekotime4578
    @patreekotime4578 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Good to see no real surprises here. From Sue's video we see that they have saved costs with this model by simplifying the interior compared to the Ioniq 5 halo vehicle. (Which is what I expected and am glad to see).
    And while the Tesla model of constant iterations is often lauded, there is really something to be said for doing good engineering from the start and replicating that many times over to bring down costs. They seem to have a good mix of conservative elements that allows them to leverage decades of manufacturing experience, along with a few novel features that show that they arent afraid to do something new when its called for. IMO that shows good management and good corporate culture. The novel use of the motor inverter to do 800v charging work rather importantly shows that their engineers arent siloed into separate departments in a way that prevents system level optimization. Very encouraging.
    Especially when faced with so many companies struggling to figure out a strategy, it is refreshing to see a company that understands and can leverage their core competancies while not letting that stand in the way of innovation.

    I have this car and love it, one slight annoyance...after driving through rain or going to the car wash, it drips A LOT on the garage floor. More than any car I have ever had. My experience has been confirmed with other IONIQ 6 owners via Reddit. Any idea on the cause of this?

    Thanks. This is the first cooling fan blade 8:11 *I* have seen with scalloped edges. A quick Google dive shows Hyundai also does this design in other cars. Do you have any comments on aerodynamic vs. aesthetic tradeoffs with this shape? Could you send that blade out for a wind tunnel study during teardown? Seems like there must be more than aesthetics where a customer never looks...

      It is a bit counter intuitive at first glance, but the fan shape adds some turbulence. That is marginally less efficient but prevents resonance noise. There is still noise, but the energy is spread over a range of frequencies making if qualitatively less irritating.

    Jordan talks about the clever way Hyundai delivers the 800 V charging capability, but I think misses a marketing advantage.
    Because all the EVs that share the same same platform, all the IONIQ, Kia, and Genesis products built on it have 800 V charging _standard_! What a selling point for all 3 name plates and the Hyundai brand overall!

    The Ioniq 6 is a huge dilemma for me: I don't like sedans, they are useless when you have loads of stuff to lug around: Bikes, musical instruments, firewood, moving stuff, fetching a new fridge etc. etc. But - I love that aerodynamic shape, the elegant design and the efficiency of the thing (I drive the 2018 Ioniq today which is more efficient than anything out there and it has a huge, practical tailgate). I might just get the Kia Niro EV instead but I would love to cruise in silence and style in the 6

    800V charging is native to this car because the battery voltage is 800V. What needs to be addressed, is charging this on a standard 400V charger. This is achieved by a clever use of motor inductance and its driver's transistors as a high-power DC-DC convertor.

  • @steinmar2
    @steinmar2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    You refer to the on board charger which is not a separate module but instead they use the driver inverter and see the ac from the ac outlet as the motor ac input and they „regenerate“ from the ac outlet so to say..
    It’s a nice trick and therefore could allow more than the industry standard 11kW but it’s crazy that is patent worthy i hope the patent is opened and not licensed! Because I already thought of this 5 years ago and wondered why nobody implanted such a solution.
    Also for Vehicle2X it’s a good approach if DC is not used and it operates efficiently

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jordan was presumably not talking about charging from an AC source (for which an onboard AC-to-DC converter is always required, regardless of battery voltage), but charging from a DC source which doesn't provide the voltage required by the battery.

    • @steinmar2
      @steinmar2 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@brianb-p6586 you should look up your sources because when you DC charge the car communicates with the „real“ charger (rectifier) and request certain voltage and current levels because it has a direct link to the high voltage battery nothing in between!

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@steinmar2 yes, that's exactly how it works. The module which controls that communication, part of the battery management system, works the same regardless of the DC charging station voltage capability... and it has nothing to do with the onboard charger, which is an AC-to-DC converter.
      The problem with DC charging for an "800 V" car is that many DC charging stations (including all Superchargers) will not go high enough in voltage - that's what I meant by "a DC source which doesn't provide the voltage required by the battery". The "separate module" which the Munro video refers to is the DC-to-DC voltage booster used by Porsche/Audi, so the car can request (for instance) 400 V from the charging station and double that onboard (at half the current, of course) to the 800 V needed by the battery.

  • @brianb-p6586
    @brianb-p6586 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The dedicated module for 800 V charging comments are unnecessarily confusing. the module would be a voltage doubler to allow charging of the battery at up to 800 V from a charger providing less than 500 V; the inverter and motor windings are apparently being used for provide this functionality. There are no more components required to DC charge at 800 V than at 400 V, as long as the charger provides the required battery voltage.

    • @LISTAMEA100
      @LISTAMEA100 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't believe that is the way, specially after following Munro for a while. The reason for that is, more range means you need more battery, which results in a trade off for efficiency. They will want to keep a balance between range, cost and efficiency. Hyundai, I think has found a good balance between range, cost, efficiency and charging capabilities if we look at the specs. Only Tesla surpases them in specs. I have a Ioniq 5 and I picked it over the Tesla Model 3 after testing both cause I liked the buttons, design and space at the same price at that time, also the seat options (you get ventilation and memory for the seats, at the same time as you can adjust the back seats, for more or less boot/leg space). To be noted , the Model Y which i also tested, was not yet available at that time, and now it is very competitive at the same price range as the Ioniq 5.

    Modular battery packs. Let the consumer dictate that "bill of materials" cost by deciding how much battery they want on a given day. Don't carry/equip for more than you are going to use. The propane tank model: you buy a tank, and use/fill when you need it. If you are driving around town, maybe 100 miles of range worth of battery. Going on a long trip? Feeling range anxiety, add some more modules. Pretty simple and obvious.

I wonder why Hyundai bothered with a sedan from a few parts of the Ioniq 5 for the sake of bit higher efficiency in highways. Tesla much more frugal usign a lot of the Model 3 to make the Model Y. However, Tesla is now battery constrained and I think it is time for them to change the Model 3 into hatchback. This could move people from buying the Model Y with ternary and large capacity batteries to the LFP, freeing nickel based batteries for use on the CT and Semi.
