Alienware R11 RTX 3080 Thermal Pad Swap

  • Today I waste my time and risk destroying my 3080 by disassembling it to change the thermal pads. The 3080 and 3090 sport very high VRAM or video memory temps during AAA gaming and mining, two tasks I put my GPU to. While the core clock remains nice and cool, the video ram climbs to 110C where it begins to throttle. The word on the street is changing thermal pads drops the temps 30C, if it sounds to good to be true...that's because it is.

    Highly recommend you redo it because I have the same exact card as you from Alienware r10. My temps are 54c core, 88c memory at 50% fan speed, hashing at 95. What I did was instead of putting thermal pads, you put thermal paste around the vram heatsink contact part. Maybe thermal pads is too thick in those area is my guess? I used mx-4. Also I changed the vram pads that came stock, 1.5mm underneath the black heatsink. Don't think you open underneath the black heatsink in this video. On the backplate, I kept everything the same but did 2.0mm (stacked two 1.0mm) for the sides where the long small chips lined up are on the outskirts. Also, after running it hot, you can rescrew, retight them after because there is a break-in period. This should lower temps further. Hope this helps!

    • @Bvoswag

  • @Zermelo
    @Zermelo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I assume you bought a pre-build as a way of getting a 3080. I have to say there doesn't look like there is good airflow in that case. While it may be a pain and a tad expensive, maybe consider buying something like a Phanteks P500A Digital RGB and some good Noctua fans and transfer all the components over to that case. That would probably do a lot for your thermals. Even if you change the thermal pads, you still need good airflow to cool that VRAM.

    • @GamerHeavenOfficial

      Agreed. That may be something I do in the near future. Coming from a built mid tower PC, I was surprised how tight all the components were packed into the R11.

    Models have NOTHING to do with it. It does not need thermal pads on that section. 1st those thermal pads are not good, 2nd you cant just throw any size thermal pads on they need to match the same for same size 0.5, 1mm, 1.5mm 2mm etc get that wrong and they could be either stoping the contact, that thermal paste is also junk and you cant just top up thermal paste they are different with different compounds.
    Anyone doing this please follow these steps
    Take the thermal paste off and replace it
    Apply a good amount of decent paste such as Thermal Grizzly or MX4.
    Next replace all the thermal pads not just the vram as soon as you remove the heatsink they can split.
    If you dont know what size to use then either use a digital or even lay the pads next to each other and you should be able to tell what aize they are
    Use something like thermal grizzly or Gelid extreme are pretty good.

    Dude, I have the same card. There are a bunch of us over at slickdeals who have taken it apart
    1) Always repaste
    2) Jack up the fan speed.
    I repasted, added 0.5mm pads between the vram heat sink and the main heat sink. I added 1mm pads to the back plate like you did.
    Try this:
    Lay computer on it’s right side and leave the cover off. You can raise the psu up to give better ventilation for the backplate. I’m in the process of adding new chassis fans but if you are still stock, that side cover adds 2 degrees to vram.
    Jack up the fan speed. I set my curve to 70% fan to around 48* on core temp. Your fans are dependent on core temp, not vram temp. Jacking up the fan made a huge difference for me.
    I’m getting 97 MH with memory clocked to +1050, power limit at 70%. Card is drawing 225w. VRAM between 88-90*

    • @Go_Birds
      @Go_Birds 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RoccoHorvath yes- my theory is this: if you look at the heat sink, it’s possible that the heat from the gpu, when being dispersed on the heat sink, could actually HEAT the VRAM, as the black metal plate above the VRAM is presumably in contact. The thermal paste will help prevent this, and simultaneously help cool the VRAM.

    what i did was to change the thermal pads with diy aluminium pads + thermal paste (only on the front side and moved the oem pads on the back side) 12x14mm , 1,5 mm thick for the gigabyte model, and 2mm thick for msi ventus
    and now my cards mine eth at 100ms/s whit the memory temp at around 75-80 C

I've been wanting to replace my pads on my dell's and was hoping to find some vids of others who had done the same, but there weren't any! And I'm sure ppl have already mentioned the mistakes made with replacing the pads so I hope you get proper results next time!
    Remove the metal brace and replace the pads on the vram
    Measure the pads size that dell uses with a caliper (u should match the thickness)
    Clean off the thermal paste and replace

    You did not actualy replace old thermal pads. You have to remove the black radiator from PCB, it houses the old thermal pads, and those needs to be removed. Follow ?v=i4ful9eaVSQ TH-cam video to find out what I'm talking about. What you actually did was added additional thermal pads, leaving the old ones in.

    Although I'm not sure if it's made of metal or plastic, I can see there is already a black plate on VRAM.
    You are basically putting extra pads on top of the preinstalled plastic or metal cover.
    No wonder why it's not making much difference.
    Plenty of people are getting good results with non Dell OEM cards, your card may not be designed for this.

  • @timotmon
    @timotmon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest, I think you did it wrong. Your GPU seems to have a black plastic piece where the actual VRAM is. You put thermal pads where they didn't belong too.. I got about a 20 - 25 degree drop on my 3090 FE so this is not a lie.

  • @AurienTitus
    @AurienTitus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job not understanding the issue. Some manufacturers, like Gigabyte weren't putting thermal pads on the back of the memory. They'd put a huge metal back plate, but nothing to help facilitate the transfer of heat from the memory to the plate.

  • @Overbuilt.Gaming
    @Overbuilt.Gaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You won't get the results you're looking for. This specific 3080 is not a FE, it's a custom PCB and cooling solution designed by Dell and not available for individual sale. The thermal pad replacement, is for the 3080 and 90 FE's. I am surprised at your temps though, that backplate has copper heat pipes on the backside of the memory chips. The GDDR6x spec says 115 is fine, STS Miner from the Nicehash discord says 105c is fine. Red Panda Mining says 95c. It's really whatever you're comfortable with, because the longevity data does not exist.

    • @GamerHeavenOfficial
      @GamerHeavenOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I knew it was Dell's in house card, but I didn't know it was a different PCB. That's good information about the temps, thank you. Even the Nvidia customer service page says 110C is completely normal and not harmful, but I would still like to drop them lower. With my current settings I sit at about 102-106C while mining Eth at 95MH/s average, which I am pretty happy with.

    This guy order the wrong size thermal pad u need 2.5 or 3mm for it to have contact, and using cheap thermal paste. U need to add the thermal pad between the backplate for the vram to transfer. U need better airflow case what’s the point if it has zero airflow?

  • @MrFree123abc
    @MrFree123abc 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah a lot gpu model out there..but i think the best gpu is the gpu that the heatsink touching the vram too..that dell 3080, the heatsink not touching vram because of the plate...temp goes down after putting thermal paste on that plate..but im wonder what if we cut that plate into shape to allow the heatsink touching the vram, then put the thermal pad..
    At the end, this will allow vram transfer the heat without the plate..vram> thermal pad>heatsink..rather than vram>thermal pad>plate>thermal paste>heatsink

    Thanks for doing this. I didn’t win the silicon lottery with my R11 since it crashes under other people’s settings but I do get 93 hash at 211 watts and my vram is 96-98 -100 core, +600 memory, 66% power, 75% fan. I keep the case open and my PSU swung out. I places 4 aluminum 2 by 2 inch heat sinks around where the pads are and a Corsair pro 120 fan on top of GPU just past the PSU cables to blow the heat off the heat sinks to the back. This fan setup drops 4c and keeping the case open keeps it from being 110c. I noticed the bottom Corsair fan doesn’t do much to cool the gpu beciase not enough air comes through the front of case. Terrible design . I’m curious if a fan instead of the SSD slot will pull in air since there are PSU cables blocking air to the gpu except a small part on bottom and again not enough air squeezes through the front case panel. Curious to see your result and I have a fan ready. I also noticed that when I split two Corsair 120 bottom fans with a Y splitter cable, one fan ramps up speed if I disconnect the other and then back to slowing down if I connect both. Could this mean not enough power going to the fans defeating the point of having 2 fans unless you run them slow?
