    You're NOT going to kill any M3 with a Volvo. Especially not an E46. The M3 power delivery, chassis, suspensions etc are all tuned for great 'Handling'. While the Volvo R can be tuned for slightly better handling and loads of power, you will find yourself foundering trying to catch up with an M3 on many roads, regardless of how you tune it. The M3 being over a ton lighter says a lot. On the other hand, the Volvo has tons of great attributes the M3 can't even come close; comfort, space, safety to name a few. They are different all together. I enjoy both at what they're made for. Both great cars. Compare the V70 with other brands of wagons and it will come up on top.

    • @ShiftingLanes
      @ShiftingLanes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The E46 is only 300-400 pounds lighter. Not a ton difference in weight. V70R is 3750-3800 lbs, e46 is 3400-3450

    Your a little off on the "shimming" portion of the video, its all done on the top end. Essentially these 2.5L motors are an open deck design and each cylinder is separated from one another (by a very small slit) and separated from the block top portion (open deck). These motors started off as a 2.3L in the older 850R cars and are very strong and can take a bunch of boost, then they were punched out to 2.4L for the low boost applications (regular turbo volvo's) and I believe the later T5 models (around 05-06) as the added displacement gave better bottom end torque (again, quite strong).
    However Volvo decided to go big and bore out the motor to 2.5L leaving little meat in the cylinder walls. What seems to happen is that the tops of the cylinders (being unsupported and with little thickness) oscillate with the movement of the piston especially under high HP numbers. Think of the cylinder being a circle from top down, well under high RPM's and high HP they morph from circle to oval to circle to oval ect ect as the piston moves up and down. This, over time, causes a small crack to form at the top of the cylinder wall leading to loss of compressing and burning coolant.
    The easiest way to prevent this is to put very thin shims between the cylinders helping to strengthen them, this is where they seem to crack generally so it's the go to for most people. There are full shim deals where it basically turns the motor into a closed deck design but they are very expensive and have to be done by a specialist.
    The odd thing about it is the cracking is very inconsistent. Some people have 300k on the original motor with no problems, some people have cracks at 80k with the original motor. Other have tunes and are over 150k with no issues and some, well, do not. It's very inconsistent and seems like you get a good motor or not and the miles and tune are not a huge determining factor. Hell, I just picked up an 04 S60R with an IPD green tune and original 200k motor and it runs great.
    At any rate if your upping the power shimming the block is a very good way to prevent a bigger problem down the road.
    Fellow V70R owner and general Volvo "collector".

      The 2.5T is best depending on goals/budget. Lots of people swap the smaller block because the smaller bore is less likely to crack. That being said, people have put in different sleeves on the 2.5 and held as much power as you can practically use. I’m not speaking from experience but I’d imagine the 2.5 would make power easier in terms of a mod per mod basis.
