  • Is the Volvo S60R really a rival for the BMW M3? Jeremy Clarkson isn't so sure, but can he be pursuaded when the Top Gear boffins turn off the Volvo's traction control and hand the keys to the Stig?

Volvo is one of the most underrated car brands in the world. Many people forget that they made the P1800 and the Bertone bodied coupes.

Kind of.. thre was an italian chap helping design the P1800 and the Bertone coupe was made by...well, Bertone.

@@taunokekkonen5733 Well not really. The Volvo P1800 was designed by the very Swedish Pelle Petterson who trained under Pietro Frua, It's still his design although you can totally see the influence from Ghia and Frua cars from the period. When it comes to the Volvo 780 Bertone I'm gonna point out that Jan Wilsgaard was collaborating with Bertone to reach the final design.

I'd have to say SAAB is one of the most underrated cars around. I have 2, a 2005 9-3 2.0T ARC with a mild tune pushing 275 whp, almost the same as the turbo V6 aero model in the line up. My 2009 9-3 is an auto, has zero turbo lag and even stock, it's still fast and most importantly, both have been 100% reliable. But I really do like the inline 5 the Volvo offers. Can't deny that.

You are so lucky that it's still in one piece.. I've worked on more then a few volvos with that engine and they are absolute crap. We had in the shop recently with 44,000 miles and the turbo was already leaking oil and it handled like a 50 year old Cadillac and the interior quality was piss poor, it was incredibly uncomfortable and turned every pebble in the road into a bolder. It's absolutely unforgivable that volvo charges the same amount for there volvo xc70 as a fully loaded Audi a4.. I own an A4 and it's better in EVERYWAY.

+EJK k I disagree, it's extremely comfortable, not on par with my Audi A6, but close, build quality is excellent, the sound of the turbo 5 cylinder is amazing, but I do agree the handling is poor. Cargo space is relatively poor as well. My Audi A6 (2001) has 322,000 kilometres and it's just now needing ball joints, and control arms. Other than that, the engine and trans still runs brand new. Love it. My Audi is also covered in airbags which I love. Lol.

+J Gripen my V50 isn't very reliable even though mine is well taken care of. Driver's door won't close if it's below -1 celsius and the reverse sensors won't work properly in the cold either, they just beep constantly even if i'm not close to anything. The climate control gets confused and opens/shuts the floor vents for about 30 seconds when i change the settings. It says people are sittning in the rear seat without seatbelts even if i'm alone in the car.

TheTopHatScoot not exactly true.. the poles did crack enigma but that was the early version before the war. The poles did help with cracking the more sophisticated war time device alongside turing so they do deserve more credit. But remember that the poles had no chance to break the war version without turing and vice versa. The real story is of course unknown but i know for sure that the poles had no ability or resources to build the machine that broke the lorenz cipher because if they did, it would be them that would have kept computers a secret or exploited it for themselves or sold the technology to the usa as part of war reparations as the uk did.

if you read the Top Gear magazine (instead of just watching the show) they state that the awd was not functioning when they ran the course with the car. you are correct, there is no on/off switch, but the haldex can be disabled by popping a fuse (or shearing an angle gear collar!) The S60R error that you're thinking of is "Active Chassis Service Required." It was a system used by the Axis forces. A machine would cypher a morse code and well that's it. The British did broke the naval enigma code, but the Polish did a lot for the deciphering of enigma code

Just bought a 2004 2.5T (no R) in Titanium Gray Pearl. Previous owner kept it perfect. Jeremy is right. It does drive like a giant wooly bison. But, if you use the manual shifter, it's not quite shit off a shovel (low pressure turbo), but it maintains (insists on maintaining) a comfortable stable ride first. It's still a thrill. I did 110mph behind a Bugatti that overtook me (hero car!) and I just throttled after him going up the I5 from CA to OR. Clearly the Bugatti could destroy an S60, but the S60 did 110mph no shakes or wobbles. Comfortable all the way through. And it's just nice to look at.

I was able to drive these volvos, audis, bmw and volvos are like a cashmere jacket with no branding. While bmw Mercedes and audies are like lacoste and AX t-shirts with huge letters and logos all around the place.

It's to do with tyre width. The tyres on the r will rub the chassis if you even go to one with a slightly more square sidewall. It's not anything to do with the awd, just how much room there is for the fairly wide tyres to turn. What model was yours? If it was a base model with skinny tyres, it shouldn't be too bad.

While not a fan of Swedish engineering... this car and all current Volvo's are gorgeous! Such an elegant and simple design. I hate working on them though... Saab is even worse! They found great solutions to problems that didn't exist. I was working on a Saab once. The engine was mounted backwards, as in the belts faced the firewall. The transmission was mounted in from of it. The transmission drive shaft went forwards to the differential and the drivers side axle went through the engine oil pan to the front wheels... WHY?? No other car I've ever worked on had such a ridiculous configuration! They solve problems that never existed for absolutely no reason.

The 2005 R (v70) is my parent's but I do know most of the details. It hasn't had any central locking issues at all. The only problems it has had that I remember was a worn angle gear (gear that helps transfer power to the rear in awd volvos... it's too soft) and just lately the active magnetic suspension had issues, but it was a cracked pin on one of the connectors to the chassis computer, so that was cheap. I have a 2000 v70r and it's central locking is getting dodgy, but mostly from age. :)

I have -01 S60 2,4T (It's the 200hp gasoline turbo). Kinda understeery, very predictable to drive (mine hasn't traction control, perhaps 'cause it's an early model), just a bit of liftoff oversteer if you try. Enough power for overtaking, yes.
Would I rather drive an RWD car with similar power? Yes. 4WD? Absolutely. The price was the thing that prevented me getting 1. BMW 325ix 2. S60 2,4T AWD 3. S60 T5/T5AWD/R 4. BMW 325 5. M-B C230K/C280. 7k euros for this when I bought it, 10-13k for the ones I listed(S60 T5 AWD and R even more then). Here in Finland BMW 3-series insurance rates are double that of the Lolvo btw... Teen boys keep wrapping RWD 3-series around trees, light poles and whatnot, hence the rates.
It's worked rather well for the 5 years I've had it, and what parts/servicing it has needed haven't been that expensive thus far. Should really get the PPC reprogramming module from those people at BSR... (200hp/285Nm->250hp/400Nm, but that torque increase can require a clutch upgrade also).
