I worked at a Volvo dealer for 9 years. Volvos are the only auto that uses boron steel in the safety cage, the V70 and all volvos can be dropped upside down, or roll down a hill and the roof will not collapse, firefighters cannot cut the door open with the jaws of life, they would hold a class in our showroom teaching firefighters how to get in or around the boron steel in the door. Our dealership was open since 1970 and not one customer had ever lost their life, but we had many shoppers who lost loved ones in the other brands when they traded up. Great video I thought I was the only crazy back in here early 80s I kind of fell in love with the turbo charged Volvo. I currently have a 2007 V70R that I purchased about six years ago. It’s not a daily maybe once or twice or three times a week I get it out of the on the road .. thanks again for the video
Has it been fairly reliable for you? I loved the way this one drove. Such a great daily, and undervalued/overshadowed by a lot of other enthusiast wagons from BMW and Audi.
Love my old volvo, the drive, the safety feel, the boxy lok which i don't mind, , ,, and i cried and grief when i've to dispose of her . , , never bought another volvo again, the heartbreak is just too much.
I ordered a 2004 S60R in 2003 just before going to Iraq. I was stationed in Germany. I struggled between going for the wagon or the sedan....was a tough choice. Anyways, I had test driven just about everything I could get my hands on while in Germany, and the S60R was my favorite of them all. Came back from Iraq to find the dealer had received it and had it in storage for me. My lord.....what an amazing car. The brakes were what sold me on it, but the comfort of the seats is the most memorable part of the car. I railed it on the Autobahn for a few years. Never got old. Quirks......you could hit a button on the dash to lower the rear head rests. They came down hard. Always did that to anyone in the backseat. The turning radius....probably the worst of any car made. Anyways, this was the pinnacle of Volvo. Super fond memories of that car.
Take a stock V70R-M6, tune it well to stage 0-then add a 3" down pipe, Eurosport Tuning sport exhaust, IPD Sway bars, and Kaplhenke Delrin subframe bushings - then you have a really terrific feeling V70R-but don't chip it without re-enforcing the block. Those who do it right can get 450 HP safely out of this engine. Nice to see the enthusiastic review, but comfort mode is not too exciting-the R comes alive in active mode-brake response, throttle response and steering all sharpen - yes-it's a hard ride in active, but to jump into active mode for some quick cornering and then easily switch back to sport for the straight-just so good-this was an incredibly advanced feature for 2004. The sound of this engine is unlike most any other.
So Ford actually bought Volvo in the late 90s, the last true Volvo was the 850, and the 1998 C/S/V70. Because Ford bought Volvo around that time, Volvo cars started using more electronics, and more importantly different engine management systems. From 1992-1998 all Volvo 850s and the S/V70 used Bosch ECUs which had a mechanical throttle cable. From 1999 onwards all Volvos had drive by wire. Oddly enough the NA cars had Denso ECUs, and the turbo cars had ME7 ECUs. They continued that trend for the whole P2 generation as well.
Well, it depends on how you look at it. I personally think that the last REAL Volvo was the Volvo 940, 945, 960 and 965. Besides the shifting of ownership they were the last cars that had RWD and was built and assembled in the Swedish factories. 1998 was the last year those cars were built.
The facelifted P2 cars are pretty much Ford's but the early P2 cars(-04), you would be hard pressed to find a single FoMoCo part on them. The P2 platform was ready to go before Ford took over.
well, that is a mk2. We have here a mk3 V70 2.5 ethanol automatic. It is just pure raw power, brutal if you like. Not sure if previous owner made something to it, but yes it was a while in a governmental use when new. It has its own brake check when going out or after a long drive, did not know when I bought it.
Hi, Great video! But… your wrong about the overtake by Ford in 2008. This actually was in 1999! So the last “real” volvo’s are the 850 and the facelifted 850 the V70 classic. The V70N cars share a similar engine as previous generation cars but of less quality. Nevertheless these are great cars. I owned a V70N 2.4T ocean race that i sold with 404k km. Currently i drive a 850 2.5 20V from 1996. She still drives like new😉
I have a 98 s70 t5 manual 1 of 361 in u.s That was last true Volvo.. Not the 850.. Its a 2.3l 8.5:1 cr 20v with m56h trans. I put a b5234t9 vvt motor with the longer conrods. Windowed block. And improved coolant pathways. But yes ford bought volvo in 1999 not 05... And resold in 2010 to chinese manufacturer. Though up to 07 they carried much of same volvo tech and safety. They ditched the cable throttle and went dbw with horrible bosch etm until 04. Ditched distributor based ignition and went coil on plug which had ton of coil failures like most 2000-2007 cars nissan alike. And changed the me4.3/4.4 ecu to me7/9
Owned a 2004 p2 V70R for 2 years, loved that car to death. They are a maintenance pig just like every euro car from the early 2000's. No other car on the planet I would rather drive through snow in, it never loses grip. If you somehow manage to get the car to slide the car has a feature in which the traction control will literally brake and accelerate on wheels individually without you doing anything to correct the car and return it to going straight.
The sleeves are weak, but shimming or sleeving the block can alleviate that, there's a guy on TH-cam named reddevil and he's making 804 awhp on his S60R with a big turbo on a sleeved block. Finally getting another car so I car really dive into working on the S60R, the end game is about 500 hp, and good cooling, my suspension is already dialed in. I love it to death, I wish the angle gear was stronger, that the trans had replacement parts available, and that the car was a touch lighter. But I can correct 2/3 of those issues
The V70R is the car that replaced the 850R, which is true. Wording could've been better, as I said "generation after the 850r, the car that replaced the 850R". What I should've said is "the model after the 850r". My apologies! I can see how this could be confusing.
Incorrect the next gen after 850r was s70 t5 another sedan not wagon. It used the m4.4 ecu instead of m4.3 and got lots of interior upgrades, was lighter, and had nicer grill and bumpers.
My dad had one of these but sadly a few weeks ago we needed to sell it. It just takes money like an endless pit 🤣 but these things are fucking cool. Its the same engine as the ford focus rs mk2. The sound is godly on these
@@username113 normal running that car wont cost you that mutch. But if something isnt right it can cost you a lot to gix it. after 240k km we needed to change a lot of stuff like headlight 2000CHF each. Coilovers 2500CHF for the back and 2500chf for the front. And it startet to take oil like a mad man what is normal for these engines. If the car is fine and runs its just great. Gas is oke normal driving it gets you about 10.5L on 100km what is acceptable.
So sad I sold my Magic Blue V70R. Hope to get an other one soon! Amazing car! My 850 T-5R is great to but the handling of the R is just better with the awd system. And yes, Volvo seats are know as the top of the line comfort seats in the car industrie.
Nice Vid & Love me some Volvo. I've got a '98 V70 T5 [badged '97 in Europe], which is model just below the R. It's really an 850 with new body style. In '99 they added VVT on intake. In 2000 (I think) is when they went to full VVT and drive by wire. I really like the '98, as everything can be addressed by OBD II. Later, they went to proprietary computer system. I hear it's a headache.
volvo isnt really boring car company. the R 2.5l engines are not as reliable as the 2.3l T5 engines that has 250hp from the crank. 2.3l T5 5cyl is the best engine to tune as stock. and it has vvt only at the exhaust side. There is so much to talk about volvo's! The list goes on and on!
2.3 engines don't have the space between the cylinders as 2.4 and 2.5 have, Therefore are stock 2.3 engines more reliable for tuning for more horsepower.
I fucking love this car!!! I currently have a 17 v60 cc (auto, gross) and it has the new 4cyl the same year v60 has the 5 cyl. Its not too bad. The r is where its at!!!!
I had a 6MT S60R, I miss it. Replaced a lot of rubber bushings with poly, short shifter, sway bars, 3" DP and 3" exhaust. I definitely miss it, it's quirkiness, and the glorious 5cyl wailing to redline. My Civic Type R is a much more reliable monster, but it doesn't have the Volvo's character
Oh and Volvo has won every championship they got in with the dealer teams ore fabric team. DTM(240 turbo), BTCC(S40 5 cilinder), European Rallycross(343 turbo), WTCC (S60 turbo),..
the whiteblock 5 cylinder gets allot of love in europe, it's a shame ford stole it and it gets maybe abit more love in focus st's and rs's and people tend to forget that it's actually a volvo unit, sound so fuckn good
Volvo was deep in the PAG under ford until 2010 and the only independent carry over from before the merger was the concepts that became the first S80 and C30 the R design cars were directly under ford buddy
As an owner of both a V70R and 535xiT, both turbos, I think BMW has Volvo beat in terms performance, handling, and comfort. The Volvo's good and has been more reliable but the BMW 535xiT is a better driver.

The P2 platform was designed and developed for the 1998 S80, on which the V70 is based. Critical design of the V70 was complete before the Ford takeover. Yes, Ford had their hands on this car, but under the skin it's still made up of a whole lot of Volvo DNA :)

We shim the 2.4 block and we can get more power from it. 400 is good for the boost .
V50s are sick wagons too
I have one of these. The same colour.as in the video, gray. 07. 155km. My neighbour has an 04. Love it.
Under rated wagon of all time
Take a stock V70R-M6, tune it well to stage 0-then add a 3" down pipe, Eurosport Tuning sport exhaust, IPD Sway bars, and Kaplhenke Delrin subframe bushings - then you have a really terrific feeling V70R-but don't chip it without re-enforcing the block.
A volvo S60/V70R will always be a car id love to own one day, or I'd swap the motor into my p2 s60 2.5t AWD
Ford borrowed this engine for the Focus RS
And the st
well, that is a mk2. We have here a mk3 V70 2.5 ethanol automatic. It is just pure raw power, brutal if you like.
Not sure if previous owner made something to it, but yes it was a while in a governmental use when new.
It has its own brake check when going out or after a long drive, did not know when I bought it.
Just found one of these parked in a parking garage in lost my mind thing was in perfect condition
I've driven many cars but I've NEVER been as comfortable as in this generation of volvo
She still drives like new😉
I have a 98 s70 t5 manual 1 of 361 in u.s
That was last true Volvo..
And changed the me4.3/4.4 ecu to me7/9
Very nice and manual too!! The sedans where rare in a manual here in US, I'm a wagon owner myself but it's a VW. GREAT VIDEO. ✌
Have a 98 s70 t5 manual 1 of 361
@@ogfromutube9649 nice. I had a 2004 Passat wagon 1.8T 5mt 4motion
The V70R is the epitome of all muscle wagons.
One of my dream cars ❤️👍🏾
I daily a V70 R, but I definitely consider a V60 Polestar with the twincharged 2.0 4 cylinder a genuine Volvo performance wagon.
Fair perspective
I’ve got an S40 T5 with the m66 pushing 21 lbs of boost. Torque is ridiculous. I wouldn’t say it’s a boring car 🤣
Ive seen some hella fast s40..
Doesnt have that same i5 sound tho..
@@ogfromutube9649 it is the inline 5. It’s a 2005 s40. Same engine except it has a turbo right?
@@samfricke3274 sorry was thinking s40 t4
Have a 98 s70 t5 manual with swapped b5234t9 hybrid billet turbo water meth running 23psi shits n gets...
I had one…
I miss my wagon
The sleeves are weak, but shimming or sleeving the block can alleviate that, there's a guy on TH-cam named reddevil and he's making 804 awhp on his S60R with a big turbo on a sleeved block.
Finally getting another car so I car really dive into working on the S60R, the end game is about 500 hp, and good cooling, my suspension is already dialed in. I love it to death, I wish the angle gear was stronger, that the trans had replacement parts available, and that the car was a touch lighter. But I can correct 2/3 of those issues
Great video 👏
1:46 You are wrong, the next generation after the 850R was the P80 V70R, and only then the P2 V70R.
That Spaceball shifter will never not be cool
My dad had one of these but sadly a few weeks ago we needed to sell it. It just takes money like an endless pit 🤣 but these things are fucking cool. Its the same engine as the ford focus rs mk2. The sound is godly on these
In what ways does it take alot of money? Like gas? Maintenance? Just interested what to look out for since im interested in getting one
Volvo made a total of 9060 Volvo V70R between 2004 and 2007. 2888 of those had manual transmission, 6172 had automatic transmission.
Do you know how many V70 4T5 were made please?
@@jirinovotny535 Sorry, I just know the R-numbers.
The auto cars are torque limited compared with the manual box.
I don’t know, I think I just heard my 2010 XC70 T6 in the driveway start to protest when the video began.
So sad I sold my Magic Blue V70R. Hope to get an other one soon! Amazing car! My 850 T-5R is great to but the handling of the R is just better with the awd system. And yes, Volvo seats are know as the top of the line comfort seats in the car industrie.
T-5R is the og performance Volvo and limited edition also. That makes it a cooler car imo, no matter what.
@@DOPVolvo my 850 is unbeatable and my unicorn. I'll keep it as long as I life and then it goes to my son. But handling, the R is amazing.
@@theundertakerrx5913 damn, nice to hear 👍🏼 I want my son to have mine one day 😁
Very nice car! I own a 2005 and a 2006 R manual shifted 😍😊
Nice car, nice video ;)
.. If you want a sleeper.. Take the R badge off. Change the bumpers to the stock 2.4na.. xD
I have a b5234t9 in my 98 s70 t5 manual
99 was first drive by wire and exhaust cam VVT.
Also that model/year, its one of the most stable and durable engines Volvo ever made.
Debatable... 4t4 had strong rods but weak cyl walls..
2.3 t9 had best of both worlds..
Lower compression but way more abuseable..
2.3 engines don't have the space between the cylinders as 2.4 and 2.5 have, Therefore are stock 2.3 engines more reliable for tuning for more horsepower.
shhhhh, stop talking it up. I still want to be able to afford one
@roads untraveled, you should go talk to Boban at Marks Auto performance about driving his V60 polestar… the actual last great Volvo wagon
Watching this makes me regret selling my S60R even more now 😔
I fucking love this car!!! I currently have a 17 v60 cc (auto, gross) and it has the new 4cyl the same year v60 has the 5 cyl. Its not too bad. The r is where its at!!!!
NOPEW..I OWN the LAST! XC70 T6 AWD 2.9L twin asymmetric turbo, with Polestar psychotic tuning. 329bhp, 480nM torque. It is absurd, and I love it.
The torque monster. - respect. 👍
I've always liked these but I go with old Audis instead. Turbo 5s are wonderful!
Oh and Volvo has won every championship they got in with the dealer teams ore fabric team. DTM(240 turbo), BTCC(S40 5 cilinder), European Rallycross(343 turbo), WTCC (S60 turbo),..
RESPECT
If you was in Maryland i have the rarest v50 t5’s you can have and I’d let you review it lol
2010 v50 t5 AWD r design manual with a k16 big turbo lol
These blocks only crack if you have a bad tune. People have made 500+ on stock liners, but the 2.3 and 2.4 are better
Especially the rn
how bout that white r34 in the background at 2:00 whats the scoop on that thing
My car haha. '99 GTT. I shot a couple videos with it when it was first acquired, but haven't had time to do much with it. (yet!)
the whiteblock 5 cylinder gets allot of love in europe, it's a shame ford stole it and it gets maybe abit more love in focus st's and rs's and people tend to forget that it's actually a volvo unit, sound so fuckn good
Audi Rs2 was the first wagon with 5 cylinders but don't think you guys got them over there
Not true. 5000, 200, S2, S4 came with turbo I5s before the RS2. 90, 100 had NA I5s. 1980s & 1990s
Good video
I have a 2005 v70 t5 how good is this vehicle
Me at 4:37 HIT THE ADVANCED BUTTON
Ohh no too many people are catching on what the p80s and p2 Rs are about!! Watch these go up now because of you
Once again I see 6 speed and it’s an instant clock
2:48 - TOP SPEED 161 MPH 😎
2:09 let's ignore the GTR in the back))
GTT :)
Sounds like a 88-93 supra 3liter turbo without the igg blow off valve
No
Volvo was deep in the PAG under ford until 2010 and the only independent carry over from before the merger was the concepts that became the first S80 and C30 the R design cars were directly under ford buddy
As an owner of both a V70R and 535xiT, both turbos, I think BMW has Volvo beat in terms performance, handling, and comfort. The Volvo's good and has been more reliable but the BMW 535xiT is a better driver.
All except safety and reliability and affordability lol.. Idk ive beaten many 335 with my 98 s70 t5
I’ve owned 2 of these cars auto cars but I don’t agree that it’s the best Volvo wagon
while ive always hated the look of this (all volvos' tbh, the way the rear ends just drop off looks dumb) I love seeing those blue gauges. So clean
A person with no taste I see, these Volvo's are the most beautiful thing ever.
@@mrnoisy4062 they’re literally just rectangles man. Like literally. Love the sound though.
@@SicSemperBeats Maybe that's just difference in taste, I love those sleek lines around the sides that end up in the rear, and that spoiler. There's also an S60R for ya which is just a sedan version of this!
You might not love the look (I personally do love the look) but if you own one and need to load something big in there that not loving-feeling will turn into love once you close the trunk and surprised think; ”Wow, that stuff really fit in there!”.
Is the firing order on the volvos same as the Audi
But we have to be honest, the next V70 T6 AWD was not an R and not a manual, but the better car! ;-)
*laughs in v60 t6 polestar*
That car IS a Ford Volvo actually and it's two generations away from an 850
My car is safe 😈
Ford owned them from 1999-2010
2:50 you are wrong again. Ford bought Volvo in 1999 and then sold it in 2010, therefore the car you are driving is a "Ford" product.
The P2 platform was designed and developed for the 1998 S80, on which the V70 is based. Critical design of the V70 was complete before the Ford takeover. Yes, Ford had their hands on this car, but under the skin it's still made up of a whole lot of Volvo DNA :)
