4:00 I must add that your Motherboard supporting 4 m.2 slots for example, or having support for PCIe Bifurcation are premiums for X series boards, rarely seen on B series boards, that further future proof your system. But you are right, not everyone will keep adding drives when they are running out of storage, and not everyone will buy a PCIe x8 GPU that has slots for 1 or 2 m.2 drives running at PCIe x4.

Thanks, Jason! I just picked up a Ryzen 5 7500f on AliXpres for under $130 (first time buyer deal) and will be pairing it with an RX 6800 GPU. I was online last night trying to pick a motherboard. This really helped so I appreciate your recommendations.
It’s very important to note that certain motherboards will automatically lower the speed of the top PCIe slot if you plug anything into the 2nd and 3rd slots, which means your GPU will take a performance hit. My particular motherboard (Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master) does this, and lowered the top slot from PCIe 4.0 down to PCIe 3.0 after installing an expansion device into the 2nd PCIe slot.
@@orion9k "A" chipsets for Ryzen (like A320, A520, and A620) don't allow overclocking or PBO and usually are very barebones. It's fine for a super low budget build but you can also find a used or even new B450 for a little more, if not the same price anyways that's probably better.
2:40 been watching your videos for some time now. The presentation with hand gestures and the other small details like that you include are a form of ASMR. I find rather relaxing watching you do those things. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻
Well good job on this video, it’s very good. Awesome content at start about the cryptic board descriptions. But in the mid part I was kinda shocked, that you seem to value boards on their connectors. Don’t forget that you need to see behind the connectors - some of them don’t work in some combos on some boards. Most important is here the compatibility or better to say the layout of some boards can deny full PCI-E x16 if used with m2 in some combinations. That’s the reason why some boards with x670 chipset are so “overpriced”.
19:15, as a PC noob that just got into computers, you're saying the b650 pro rs got 3 x m.2 slots on it and I'm just looking and searching on the picture and I'm like ehh, so where? But that's only on the ATX and not the Micro-ATX, as it is in the video, am I mistaking something? (Not that I want to prove a point, but I have been confused and replayed for like 20 times and looked it up to find what's going on).
I’ve heard that there are some issues where 7000 CPUs and motherboards end up booting slowly. Is there any recommendation for a board that would be better for this over other ones? Thanks!
Someone help, please! I’m a first time builder. Will an Asus Tuf Gaming X670E motherboard with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super be compatible and run 1440p? Thank you!
Its all compatible but this combo is great for production focused builds. If that is your aim then perfect. If just 1440p gaming is your focus you don't need to spend that much on your motherboard and I'd recommend a 7900XT on the GPU. See our Best Builds February video (in our builds and parts list on the channel page). We have a great sample 7800X3D gaming build there
Love it. And from a sound perspective, just so surprinsing how so few of these boards have the RealTek chip 1220 + optical Toslink output. How are you going to live without it today ??? Given this combo should work as well as a 124 dB SNR Sound Blaster ZxR combo, with only 24 bits 96Khz capabilities, or even the newer ones.
The MSI Edge B650 WiFi is a better board than the B650 WiFi Tomahawk version (also costs a bit more) & that is what I used on my recent Ryzen 9 7900 12C/24T 1440p build. My late-2019 3700X 1080p build used an MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard & that PC is still running great today with all the original hardware, so both board options are a good choice really.
It's a great board. The only real difference is the white styling and the addition of PCIE Gen 5 M.2 Support. Personally I like the look of the edge more than the Tomahawk (I know some people love matte black but I personally favor the black/white or black/silver look). And it goes on sale cheaper than the Tomahawk sometimes too.
Jason, I've been on the fence here lately. Not sure what your thoughts are on getting into Ryzen 7000 series now, or waiting until their next generation later this year. I'll be targetting somewhere around 7900x3d territory of wanting a good workload PC while also netting solid gaming performance. I game in 4k, so not too worried about having a pure gaming chip. Thoughts on waiting versus not?
I have bought all my keys through them anonymously for the past 3 years (dozens of keys at this point) so I am very comfortable recommending. For a fresh build windows instal check out our "After you build" set up guide for a how to
They are usually legit, part of the reason they're so cheap is that usually you get an OEM key from those sorts of sites. This key will be hardware locked to the computer after you use it, not allowing for it to be transferred down the line (as may be necessary with a big upgrade). Also, less important for most people making their own PCs but OEM keys are backed by the OEM that made/provided them, and not windows, so things like tech support are on them, and windows doesn't have to responsibility for this kind of thing.
I have a B550 in my 2020 build, with a 3800X and a 3060Ti. Im kind of astonished that the B550 is still on the thumbnail image for a "best Ryzen Mobo's in 2024" video 😅 Recently updated to 5800X3D, and im looking to go next gen Radeon when 2025 rolls around.
I got the Gigabyte x670 gaming x ax v2 for a 7800x3d is there anything wrong with this motherboard? Ive read that it doesnt have the best audio will that affect the quality of sound in my headset?
As far as I know, USB is always backwards compatible. For example if you plug a usb2.0 drive in a usb3.0 slot it’ll run at 2.0 speeds an vice versa. The red coloured ports are USB 3.1.
I just ordered my new parts and went with the ASUS TUF Gaming B650. Sort of got it by accident because I'd changed down from the ASUS ROG Strix B650E to budget for a monitor and forgot to change it back when I removed the monitor!! This is reassuring that the one I'm getting will still be a quality item, even if not the top level!! To be honest, as long as it causes no problems Im happy
I built two computers last year using Asrock motherboards (AMD with GPU, Intel with no dedicated GPU) and both has odd random screen blanking issues. I'm not sure where the issue is but I'm about to change one of the motherboards to see if that was causing it. The common denominator between the two PCs is the MB manufacturer. Thoughs?
Well, Gen 5 PCI-e slot is far from useless if you are going to use next gen GPUs. Nvidia 5000 and AMD 8000 series onwards most likely will use gen 5. That is later this year or 1H of 2025. Also, x670 has a lot more PCI-e lanes. Meaning B650 boards are going to disable connections if some other connections are used. So B650 actually can't use as many m.2 slots as advertised as slots. Also some B650 boards actually disable half of GPU slot. So you are getting 8x GPU if you use that another slot for anything.
Yep, paying the extra for PCIE gen 5 now was worth it to me , rather than tear my system apart to change out a MB that has gimped my upgrades in two years time.
@@tonydalimata When I built my new PC last summer, E and non-E versions were about same price aswell. Those still are, unless you compare budget level boards with higher end. Makes that decision pretty much no-brainer.
I would agree on the A series. However, there are several -very- bad B boards. The one thing is, we're starting to see X series in that same price segment (see Asrock X670E Pro, which is now in several places below $200) that said, the most significant benefits of X670E do matter depending on your end use plan. Having a 10Gbe onboard was a virtual requirement for what I was after, as a Quadro is going to take up slots, and I have repeatedly upgraded my NVME to as fast as I can go for video swap surface before it gets to my NAS. One other item you don't often find on B650 is Thunderbolt4, which, if you are also dealing with creator purposes, you are likely to need. So, plan on your purpose. Are you building to game? Or are you building to create? Very different. And, at a certain point, you may hit an area where looking at Threadripper pays off. I'm not eager to upgrade my Threadripper 5975, but PCI-E lanes, but for some users, this will matter. Keep in mind: fastest graphics card will also be very different based on your build purposes.
Got the B650 Tomahawk a few months back on my first build. I really like it and decided to forego the Micro Center bundle with the Gaming X AX to get this mobo and the lower CL RAM of my choice
Just picked up all white NZXT B650E on amazon sale for $249 before tax. normal price marked up to 319.99 so I'm happy. I moved all my components into a new H6 Flow, just waiting for 9800X3D in the morning, then RAM and GPU upgrade
I'm locked into a higher price range because I want a post code led screen to do my own troubleshooting if need be. I don't want a brick. It's just a little extra built-in tech support insurance. (And a SPDIF is nice). But, I'm limited to the Taichi Lite or the Strix E-E. A post code screen is like a $5 feature that I have to pay $50-$80 more to get now. ~eyeroll~ Any thoughts?

You always mention sometimes a motherboard doesn't come with a certain audio compared to others. What do you mean by that and is it a big deal for gaming?
need a b650 with spdif output and Proper quality. not gonna overclock. issue is so many positive And negative reviews for every possible mainboard.... putting the Ryzen 7 (x3d) in it and a 4070 gfx card
@PC Builder Have you tested these boards or are you just looking at the listed features and just giving your opinion without testing? I know Steve over at Hardware Unboxed has tested a lot of them and was wondering if you did the same.
I have built with many of them but we are not a testing channel like Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed. I research the heck out of them before I publish a list like this and my recommendations are around the best price to performance for peoples builds. But I also recommend checking out the testing channels if you are interested in that sort of data too!
Didn’t watch this great video yet, but I was literally looking on your channel a couple of days ago for the best ryzen motherboards, y u do dis to me lol😂 thanks for top quality videos tho 👌🏾
I'm so lucky that the board I chose for aesthetic reasons (to pair with my 5600x for my first build) just HAPPENED to be a B550 with pcie 4.0 and a flashback button It's incredible how much more I have learned AFTER my first build! Your videos are so awesome!
First, Thanks to this video, gonna build my pc just like this however no mention of ASRock B650E STEEL LEGEND WIFI AM5 ATX Motherboard ??? any thoughts please ?
AM4 is surprisingly still getting chip releases geting 2 more this year it seems so it's good to keep up to date on the boards available for the platform. For that reason bios flashback is mandatory for any AM4 board. I would also say that if rear IO is important to you maybe check out the B550M AORUS ELITE AX. Personally I got a good deal on a MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK WiFi and still thinking of getting a add on card to slot into the 3.0x1 slot to shift some of my devices closer to the bottom of my case for organization of cables and to free up the better rear IO ports.
Is there another x670 with 2x5.0 M.2 slots for nvme ???????? And why doesn't any of the so called High End (scoffs) motherboards have 2 5.0 M.2 slots come standard????? Because not one person puts their games on C: drive these days. It goes on the G: drive, G for Games only drive. Which should be the 2nd M.2 slot, which should be 5.0. A BIG FU to the lot of them...
What is an M2X_Sb slot? Is this an m.2 slot? I have a b650m c v2 motherboard and im trying to determine where to put my additional SSD? Im not sure if i need to use a PCIEX1 or the M2X_SB.
For Zen5 remember there are 28 PCIe lanes. 4 are reserved for taking to the chipset(s) if you are 670 chipset is really just two 650s chained onto the same 4x PCI chipset lanes. The other 24 lanes are normally diveded between 16 for GPU slot, 4 for main M.2, 4 for second M.2 the final 4 are either a PCI slot (often a x16 slot but only wired with 4 lanes) a 3rd lane or on a handful of bards they use these for a 40gb/s USB4 port.
About PCIe and m.2 slots, pay close attention to board diagram in the motherboards documentation. On some boards, if you slot a m.2 into the top (sometimes also the fastest) m.2 slot, it will half the bandwidth of the top PCIe slot (often the one with the reinforced PCIe slot intended for a heavy GPU) from x16 to x8 mode, wich can make a slight difference, especially later down the road when more powerful GPUs and things like DirectStorage will want all the bandwidth they can get.
I have the Asus tuf gaming plus B450 which has not given me any probs at all these past 5 years. Unless Asus has cheaped out this year, i'd be up for getting this board in the B650! Is Asus still making good products this year? I bought their variant of a GPU and a monitor. Solid stuff that I'm counting on holding true this year.
I went with a Gigabyte X670E Aorus Pro X for my 7800x3d White looking PC build. Did I make a bad decision lol? I'm putting it together this weekend when all my parts come in.
All this time I've been listening to your channel I've never heard you review the Asrock B650 livewire motherboard. I did a lot of research and landed on this motherboard for my build. You talk a lot about rear USB ports and the livewire has 12 total. I paid 149.00 for the board. It's an awesome board and wondering why you have never spoke about it. I'm running the livewire with 7800x3d with the rx 6700xt gpu and have been running an average frame rate of 136 fps on Avatar with a 144 hz monitor.
I looked around for a few days, trying to decide on my new AM5 motherboard... I ordered one yesterday. Today I found the video. I was happy that I landed on the b650 Tomahawk after watching this video, thank you
I noticed you recommended the D3HP but I read the Gigabyte budget boards have bad VRMS (discrete MOSFETs). I don't really understand this, does it also apply to the D3HP? And is it a big reason to avoid a mobo? Thanks for the great video!
I am wondering the same thing too. I just bought a D3HP AX with Ryzen 7600x and Radeon 7800xt and I believe it is fine since I do not plan on overclocking etc
Hi Jason- I've been looking at the MicroCenter bundle that comes with the 7700x CPU and the B650-P PRO WiFi AMD AM5 ATX motherboard and G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 Kit. After watching this video I'm now wondering if I should pass on the bundle and buy the parts separately. You made no mention of this motherboard in your recommendations. And while the bundle seems like a good deal, I am being cautious as a first time PC builder.
No that's a good deal and you should get it. He just doesn't recommend that Motherboard here because by itself it's currently more important expensive than the Gigabyte Eagle and MSI Gaming Plus WIFI with similar specs.
I currently have an Asrock B450 Fatal1ty mainboard that I will eventually need to upgrade to take advantage of PCIe 4. The main problem, though, is that this particular B450 is not as flexible as I thought when it comes to storage options. If I add a second M.2 drive, for example, I have to give up a couple of SATA ports. My impression is that the X570 boards don't have a similar issue, but if I _have_ to go with a B550, which ones don't force you to sacrifice storage options? I do not want to go with B550M, though, because those come with way fewer USB ports.
I've been super hooked to your videos as of late Jason and I'm learning so much stuff. I'm ordering the parts for my first PC build hopefully next week but I'd like to confirm something about the mobo before I do that. I'm getting a Ryzen 5 7600 paired with an RX 7800 XT, and for mobo I was going to go for the MSI Pro B650M-A. Is this one still good enough if my purpose for this build is gaming at 1440p? Or would you recommend to take the leap up to the more premium "gaming" motherboards shown in the video? (Case is going to be the Antec NX410 you recommended so no problems about the size) Cheers!
Good guide, but in the 200 dollar range why not going for the AStock PG lightning or riptide? Only saw positive things about them for a very competitive price
They are fine, and I have both of them, but they are weaker in terms of the USB ports, audio, and other features for the price. For a while they were priced very well, but everyone else has lowered prices.
@@PCBuilderChannel thanks for the reply. Love the vids. I guess that is the difference I am from Europe where they are still priced cheaper than most of the direct competitors you mention. Thanks for the insights on your choices
Absolutely great video, thanks Jason. I’m not currently building but use your videos to help friends and family that ask me for advice, as things change so much and I wouldn’t give out advice unless I had a good information source. I really like the Strix F board (especially as it is on sale in the uk at £209 right now) but I wish it had the Q-code reader (has helped me troubleshoot in the past) and a usb c header. The Strix b650e e gaming has these features for £269, but users need to be careful. If I’m not mistaken when M.2_3 is populated, PCIEx16_1 runs in X8 mode. Maybe not a problem right now but could be down the line for high end gaming builds. Just seems an odd choice to make as the second pcie slot may not be effected. This could be a topic to cover in an advanced builders guild. ‘’Understanding your motherboard’s connectivity and the importance of reading your manual”. Plus how to decide what features are important.

Thanks, Jason! I just picked up a Ryzen 5 7500f on AliXpres for under $130 (first time buyer deal) and will be pairing it with an RX 6800 GPU. I was online last night trying to pick a motherboard. This really helped so I appreciate your recommendations.

Awesome video as always Jason!!!
Always informative and entertaining!
Stay well buddy!!!!!!
AMD B series motherboard highly recommended for 2024
That's right!
Whats wrong with the cheap mb models?

Well good job on this video, it’s very good. Awesome content at start about the cryptic board descriptions. But in the mid part I was kinda shocked, that you seem to value boards on their connectors. Don’t forget that you need to see behind the connectors - some of them don’t work in some combos on some boards. Most important is here the compatibility or better to say the layout of some boards can deny full PCI-E x16 if used with m2 in some combinations. That’s the reason why some boards with x670 chipset are so “overpriced”.
I put my new 7600X in an Asus TUF GAMING X670E-Plus WiFi ATX Motherboard. I paired it with a Nvidia 4070 Ti Super. I’m happy with all of it.
I hear ya man.
I got a 7950x3d with the x670 elite aorus AX and managed to nab a 4090 and no problems so far!
Thanks so much, Jason. This is super helpful -- as are your various other videos I recently viewed. Thank you.
Thanks!
do you think the msi pro b650-P wifi is good? Even over the tomahawk?
Someone help, please! I’m a first time builder.
Will an Asus Tuf Gaming X670E motherboard with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super be compatible and run 1440p?
Thank you!
Its all compatible but this combo is great for production focused builds. If that is your aim then perfect. If just 1440p gaming is your focus you don't need to spend that much on your motherboard and I'd recommend a 7900XT on the GPU. See our Best Builds February video (in our builds and parts list on the channel page). We have a great sample 7800X3D gaming build there
What dou you think which one to buy?
MSI Tomahawk Wifi or Strix B650-A or Aorus Elite AX?
Thank you for alot of videos, help a ton building my new dream pc :) You explain everything very good
@zoro_dxdi am also thinking same either 4070ti super or 4090 with 7800x3d , but not able to find the motherboard
I currently have a ryzen 7 7800x-3d and I’m debating between the ASUS b650-A and the ASUS b650E-F. Which one do you recommend?

That's great to hear! Thank you for watching
Is the windows CD key really legit?
Yes I used his code like 2 months ago when I built my new pc
@@j.birdie no issues? How’d you download it if your pc is brand new? Put it in a flash drive or something?

Are the latest and greatest in USB slots backwards compatible with 3.0 or even 2.0? Those red ones are new to me :)
Preach, I got the Asus TUF GAMING X670E-Plus WiFi 6e, PCIe 5, 2.5 GBps Ethernet, ATX Motherboard. Love it.
@@RichardBejtlichI want to buy the x670e tuf, have you had any problems with it so far?

Thoughts on the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming for 5700x3d?
I'm locked into a higher price range because I want a post code led screen to do my own troubleshooting if need be. I don't want a brick. It's just a little extra built-in tech support insurance. (And a SPDIF is nice). But, I'm limited to the Taichi Lite or the Strix E-E. A post code screen is like a $5 feature that I have to pay $50-$80 more to get now. ~eyeroll~ Any thoughts?

If you need to save money its fine, but it only has 1 m.2 slot. That is why the Gigabyte B650i is my top ITX pick for just $50 more.

A BIG FU to the lot of them...
so if i understand correctly, if i want to future proof my Mboard i go with a "E" series?
What is an M2X_Sb slot? Is this an m.2 slot? I have a b650m c v2 motherboard and im trying to determine where to put my additional SSD? Im not sure if i need to use a PCIEX1 or the M2X_SB.
What do you think of the X670 Gaming X. A.X. (V1)? Is 231 U.S.D. a good deal?
For Zen5 remember there are 28 PCIe lanes. 4 are reserved for taking to the chipset(s) if you are 670 chipset is really just two 650s chained onto the same 4x PCI chipset lanes. The other 24 lanes are normally diveded between 16 for GPU slot, 4 for main M.2, 4 for second M.2 the final 4 are either a PCI slot (often a x16 slot but only wired with 4 lanes) a 3rd lane or on a handful of bards they use these for a 40gb/s USB4 port.
The ASRock B550 Pro4 AM4 doesnt have flashback will that be a problem with a AMD Ryzen 5 6500
So I searched randomly "PC builder motherboard". This dropped 23 hours ago lol. Certified fresh

(Case is going to be the Antec NX410 you recommended so no problems about the size)
Cheers!
