Jason, thank you for the update on NVME drives since I want to purchase another pair to put on a PCIE expansion card before adding a second Gen 4 NVME drive to the secondary motherboard slot. I had one there before and really enjoyed the 1.9 GB/sec transfer speeds! Keep up the good 👍 work!
I doubt you'll see this but please do this for ps5 pro. Idk if the official specs for it has come out but some assume you can use the same ssd as base ps5 even tho the pro is a bit stronger than many realized once it was shipped to them. Base ps5 Face plates aren't compatible with pro and only found out by someone exposing it. I just dont wanna buy a ssd thats good for ps5 but it doesn't work with the pro because sony wants us to find out ourselves
12:53 That's a good option, using an add-on card for another SSD. But before going there, we should check our motherboard. All Standard-ATX mobos, most micro-ATX, and maybe an oddball ITX, have more than one m.2 slot. My ATX mobos have three each. And, of course, this isn't needed if you go with a SATA SSD. Great video, Jason. I was surprised to learn that 4TB has finally taken over the sweet spot from 2TB (but has it, really?), and I'd never seen an RGB heat sink. I always learn _something_ from your videos.
Just bought a 1tb and 4tb samsung 990 pro. I thought I knew best that they were top of the line for just about everything, and while they seem to be for everything, except gaming, which is the one thing I do most... 😅
One of the best performing SSDs at the moment is the Lexar NM790 and it's recommended by a major retailer I purchase my hardware. Great for dedicated gaming PCs.
Have already upgraded NVME a few times now. Current system has 3.75tb spread over 4 x NVME. Just 1TB now on Mechanical Drive. Had so many hard drives fail over the years have no hesitation going all NVME in the future.
Got me a sn850x 2tb for my local Walmart for ~$143 usd out the door the other day. Being in a small town if they have too much stock we will get local only sales, plus it helps when you know the cashier!
"If this had two M.2's on it, I'd want to see a x8 connector, etc" I agree this is ideal, but for people who don't have a larger slot available, this only matters if you're using both drives at the same time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that as long as you only use one drive on the adapter at a time (such as when playing a game), x4 will work without performance loss. I've even seen a card with four M.2's on it.
Do your research if you are considering a pcie adapter for nmve cards. The x4 versions can fit in x16 slots if you dont have x4 slots on your board. x1 slot adapters will run at a limited speed but worth considering for extra storage - not gaming. Many boards do not have full bandwidth available to use all the pcie slots and nvme slots. My MSI board has a graphics card and 2 nvme cards installed. I can not use my second x16 slot or one of my x1 slots. They get disabled when the other slots are used. The motherboard manual will list your memory storage options.
If you ever start messing around with Unreal Engine or other 3D stuff, you'll be shocked at how fast you can fill up a drive. I have 2 2tb ssds, plus 8tb hdd on board (came with the rig), and 16tb worth of nvmes external in enclosures (so I can use them with my laptop too). Yes, I should get a NAS setup but that's way beyond my skillset and budget, currently.
I have a few MX500s in my system, and they serve me well. I do plenty of reading, writing, and deleting large batches of photos, and they do perform better than cheaper ones I’ve used. I also use a single 4TB Crucial P3 NVME SSD for my travel gaming PC, and it’s plenty snappy, and runs smooth as eggs. I see no real need for anything faster.
Zero to SSD hero? Fine... you got me. I'll leave my like haha! I have an HDD where I have RoN, Cyberpunk77, KCD, Cities Skylines... all of them work just fine. I do get some little hiccups with RoN but not sure if it's the drive or my older bottlenecking CPU. If you can get an SSD, don't get an HDD in 2024, obviously. But saying obsolete is a bit much. Depending on the game you're trying to play, an SSD will only differ in LOADING TIMES. This is coming from an mmorpg player. Back in the day, since SSDs were sort of new/expensive you'd get the HDD for your games. And the problem with them now is that textures and stuff to stream are much larger and needs to be quicker, this is where an HDD is not useful anymore. But if you are playing something a bit older (or even newer that doesn't need the loading speeds like the examples I gave above), it can still be used. Things may vary depending on your region and market. If you can get an NVME today, just get that and don't worry. Also you can even get a Gen 3 and not overspend and not notice a difference between PCIE 3, 4 or 5.
Is there any point in having an SSD that can read and write faster than the original? If so can you please explain what the benefits would be and how much more beneficial it is? Still looking into this correct me if im wrong. But i think as long as i meet the standard PS5 5500 read and write speed i should just get the best value for money. Making sure of course of the reputation of the SSD.
Hi ! I might ask a dump question already answered, but is it a good two have two different SSD on your machine for dividing OS and Games ? Also if you are using VMs, which kind of SSD we should focus on ? Thank you for your video.
It is not bad at all but not strictly necessary either. What is almost never told in these PC build guides is that if the system has only one drive, to partition that drive is very wise, because if you would have to reinstall Windows (or install/upgrade to newer version) then you do not have to save the files (your games and possibly personal stuff, music, photos, etc.) from the other partition(s) elsewhere. Because of this personally I always use a small, separate drive for the OS only, for me it is more convenient setup.
In late September 2024, the Teamgroup MP44L SLC cache drive in 1TB capacity can be had for $57, a dollar less than its Gen 3 counterpart, the MP33. I'm going to run this in a Gen3 slot, at least for now, but it makes no sense to spend more for the slower drive given I might use it in a Gen4 slot at a later time.
Very informative. Im looking for more storage to store games and you advising that the faster speeds or m.2 vs sata doesnt have a great margin when it comes to gaming performance is going to save me a lot of money haha
I'm that guy that will come and go on building PCs as prices lower ... 2016 .. I stopped cause they had 980 ti then a 1080 titan to .. think it was $1200 maybe more. But I was really skeptical about paying that much money for a video card... And when I do jump into the hobby, I like to buy the best of each piece. I want each piece to be the best they don't necessarily have to match. They just need to be the best of each piece. That's just the way I like to build ... I build my cars the same way ... But with PCs... They are starting to advance quickly... That I'm worried about starting a build getting the motherboard and CPU first . And by the time I get everything else I feel like my motherboard and CPU will be something I won't be happy with anymore because something better might have came out. So I keep not building because I can't get to a point where I could relax and go. This is the year to build it... It's moving to fast .. and motherboards are just really expensive... And I didn't want to settle with a gigabyte master ... When there's a higher tier .. Just like how I settled for the gigabyte 970 Xtreme gaming GPU in 2016 ish.. I felt like then I didn't have a good enough graphics card so I've been waiting and in the Bitcoin hit right after that. Aunt, nobody was going to be building the computer then that they liked for gaming without breaking the bank .. Memory and RAM are low prices right now .. But GPUs are still being made with hardly any video memory.. I would like to see dual channel memory on a video card just like how we have on a motherboard. I would also like to see 32 gigs of video memory on a video card... It's kind of where it should be anyways to be able to Future proof that thing for at least 3 years. They should be at least future proof for them for 3 years, but I noticed they're starting to release them almost every year now to every two years...
I've been using Intel/Solidigm enterprise class & professional class SSD's (2.5 SATA & M.2 NVMe) since my first one over a decade ago. They have never let me down & even the oldest one is still running today at 100% health, after many years as a primary/boot drive & later a secondary drive on newer builds. I don't mind paying a bit more for extreme reliability & durability/longevity, because dealing with failed drives is a huge headache.
Just got a 2tb Lexar NM620 the other day, unlike before when i used to buy Lexar ssds for cheap to make older hdd pc's and laptops faster, these days they seem to be very reasonable budget products.
I managed to score myself a Crucial MX500 1TB back in October 2023 for just £45 off of Amazon so I'm feeling pretty smug about that right now especially considering current prices are near on double that atm. Well, technically I got it for free since someone was kind enough to send me a gift card to get it cos my HDD was driving me crazy, grinding to a halt and bottlenecking my entire system to the point that it would often freeze up and take a good 5-10mins to do a full shutdown/restart so this thing was an absolute godsend and breath of fresh air for an old system like mine, giving it a brand new lease of life. Even after all of these months I still can't get over how fast this thing is to boot up from sleep and restarts in the blink of an eye not to mention the fact it runs pretty cool and silent unlike my old HDD which was beginning to sound about as excrutiating as nails on a chalkboard lol
I just have a question. Why do you choose the WD blue sn580 over the WD black sn770? At least in my area, the 770 is a little bit cheaper with a higher max read & type speed.
I found the Cardea "A440 PRO" 1TB for £122 and a 2TB "A440" (i.e. non-PRO) for £152. My guess is that the PRO version has DRAM and the non-PRO version does not (based on the price difference -- neither being marked down). You know what Amazon description accuracy is like! 😀
Jason, can you please help me understand how a PCIe add in card (for an additional NVMe slot) affects the total PCI lanes/bandwidth on the PC? For example, I have a Ryzen 5700g, which has 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes. I have two NVMe drives and a full size graphics card (16 lanes). How does the PC divide up the lanes? If I insert an add-in card with a 3rd NVMe, will I reduce my bandwidth and slow down my drive or (worse) my graphics card? Thanks for any help you can provide. I have tried to research this and still don't understand....
Still using a Kingston 256 GB SATA SSD on one of my desktops even after I upgraded my Mobo and CPU. Still going strong, no reason to by a M2 NVME for that desktop yet.
Your guides are usually legit Jason but you didn't mention the write speeds at all on this one. Also would love if you could talk about how different manufacturer matter for cards. I've decided on a 7900 GRE but I don't know if it really matter what brand I get. I understand warranty and cooling is important but in term of clock speeds, I can manually overclock even a OC fighter to red the Red DEvil speeds right?
Hi Jason, I can't find any kind of info that indicate Klevv CRAS C910 have DRAM Cache, the official website and product sheet mention no such thing, can you confirm that the amazon listing is faulty?
Bought a Samsung 990 pro 4tb w/ heatsink off Amazon during Black Friday sale and my pc reads it as a Samsung 970 scsi disk device with 232gb space available, wouldn’t be as mad about it if I didn’t wait 2-3 weeks for it to arrive
There's something I don't understand, sorry for my ignorance, if the difference between traditional SATA III cabled SDDs and Nvme M.2 Drives is basically unperseptible, why not just buy a SATA III drive instead of the M.2 variants
Love your stuff Jason!! You've been a huge help in choosing the components to build my first gaming PC. I'm just about ready to start ordering all my parts. Very excited. Can anybody answer what may be a stupid question... is the Team Group MP44 just the Gen 4 version of the MP34? Thanks guys.
When buying NVME SSDs is it still important to buy from a reputable company? In the era of magnetic drives I tried to stick to better brands. Its such a pain if your storage craps out.
Thanks Jason! Quick question if you've got the time to answer: For the PCIe adapter, why do you need an PCIE x4? A x1 adapter would also work fine but at a slower speed, right? (Max 1gb/s but still faster than SATA). Send love to the cats :)
There's going to be little benefit upgrading to the T700 since pcie gen 5 speeds just aren't necessary for most people, even most professionals. I would just get a decent gen 4 drive if you need more storage.
Serious question: I’ve had my desktop since 2018. Pretty much everything has been upgraded. CPU went from r5 2600 to r5 5600x. GPU from RTX 2060 to RX 6700XT. An original HDD for storage and 1 256GB SSD. BUT I kept adding on SSDs! First a 500GB SSD, then 1TB M.2 NVME… and ANOTHER 1TB NVME. Is there a limit or downside to having so many? I’ll probably build a new comp in a year or two, and don’t plan on adding more. Just really curious. Am I greatly reducing power efficiency or CPU output somehow?
And in case anyone asks, these are for games and a bunch of minor audio and video editing projects. I haven’t really run into any issues in particular. But also my PSU is pretty low and I have an older MSI x470 motherboard, the biggest issue I’ve run into is not enough power to USB slots.
Your videos are fantastic. Quick question, I'm planning on getting the ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI and plan to have 3 of the 4 M.2 ports occupied. One 500gb for PC boot drive, one gen 4 1Tb for Acronis backups and one gen 5 4Tb for everything else (3D visualisation work files, textures, models, gaming, photos, movies). The question is, is it better for the 500gb PC boot drive to be a gen 5, or can the boot drive be a gen 4 and make no difference? I ask because on this particular motherboard, apparently having the two bottom PCIe gen 5 M.2s occupied with any kind of M.2 is supposed to slow down the GPU if you are aware. Do you know which of the four M.2 slots would be best to leave empty? If not, I understand. I know its not an easy question.
No Gen 5 isn't necessary and Jason says it's not worth the money. I also don't like that Motherboard because of the price. There are better Price to Performance options like the MSI X670E Tomahawk or ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI if you really want ASUS.
@@michalsavatar7 yea I'm unsure how they perform compared to the -E but paying over $400 for a Motherboard doesn't make sense. Even paying over $300 seems like a lot to me.
For gaming alone most SSDs are totally fine since you just move small bits of data from all sorts of places, but for production purposes where you move large chunks of data a lot you might need specific SSDs which dont drop their performance after a few GB's moved like most SSDs. Im happy with my Kingston Fury 2TB Gen 4 SSD I got for 106€ (mega value) on prime deal a year ago. But honestly, any SSD (SATA, Gen 3-4) does the job for pure gaming.
Good combo, that's the max GPU I'd pair with a 5600. See the second to last video on the channel for more on a great sample 5600 build. Its our "Best Budget Builds" guide
currently the western digital in the uk is about £80 for 1tb. However the kingston fury renegade is on deal for £65. Would you recommend that ssd at all?
I've found that gen3 nvme drives mostly aren't even available anymore. When I find one of those it is more expensive than gen4 nvme. Also, anything smaller than 4TB seems to be a waste of m.2 socket. Those are best price/GB where I live. 🤷🏻♂️ Bigger drives usually have better endurance (TBW, terabytes written) ratings aswell. If you are doing write heavy workloads like video editing or transcoding, endurance starts to matter.
Another great video by Mr Bear 🐻…… sorry Jason 😉😅😂🤣. Terrific and well explained video Jason and didn’t realise Xbox S/X used a proprietary connector …… I always wondered why the Xbox storage was soooo pricey! I’m not really a console gamer tbh and aren’t fully up to date on their specs etc.

Your work is invaluable. I've learned so much about building computers over the last few months watching your videos. Just wanna say thanks
Thanks a lot, glad you've learned so much from the channel! And thank you for tuning in ;)
Honestly had no idea about that sticker! Awesome tidbit!!!
the 990 pro blasts everything compared to my other ssd which is less performant, even in gaming, I do not regret putting the price to it honestly :)
sn850x better and more reliable, sk hynix p41 as well
I just want to say I found Jason and his videos in 2020 when building my first PC and he really helped me A LOT with my rig. His videos ALWAYS have great information!
That's so great to hear! Thank you and congrats on your build
I love your enthusiasm in every review 😀
Great channel👍👍
Thank you so much 😁
I really appreciate your vids. I'm preparing to build my first gaming PC, and I've watched many of your videos to prepare. Thanks for all of your hard work in making this info available to newbs like myself.
So glad we can help! Best wishes on your build!
Best of luck with the build. Do you need help picking out the parts or are you all set?
@@kelley09162 All set, at this point. I’ve deep-dived for a few months now. Thanks
Happy to help!
Mine has 1 😢
Just bought a 1tb and 4tb samsung 990 pro. I thought I knew best that they were top of the line for just about everything, and while they seem to be for everything, except gaming, which is the one thing I do most... 😅
Hi Jason! Great video, as always. You've helped me a lot with deciding on various upgrades recently so thank you! 👍
So glad we could help! Thanks for letting us know
One of the best performing SSDs at the moment is the Lexar NM790 and it's recommended by a major retailer I purchase my hardware. Great for dedicated gaming PCs.
Have already upgraded NVME a few times now. Current system has 3.75tb spread over 4 x NVME. Just 1TB now on Mechanical Drive. Had so many hard drives fail over the years have no hesitation going all NVME in the future.
Your enthusiasm is amazing. You're talking about DRIVES.
haha thank you! Not the most exciting component its true, but I love helping folks with their builds so its still a good time (;
Got me a sn850x 2tb for my local Walmart for ~$143 usd out the door the other day. Being in a small town if they have too much stock we will get local only sales, plus it helps when you know the cashier!
This channel is awesome - it save me a lot of research time for my AM5 platform upgrade
So glad to help!
"If this had two M.2's on it, I'd want to see a x8 connector, etc"
I agree this is ideal, but for people who don't have a larger slot available, this only matters if you're using both drives at the same time.
Thank you jason, for keeping us updated in the fastest changing indutry.
Very apreciated ❤
Fast is right! You're very welcome :))
Also you can even get a Gen 3 and not overspend and not notice a difference between PCIE 3, 4 or 5.
learned alot. thanks!
Nice Video! How about cloning nvme to nvme? Allso Issues can appear or is it less risky?
That should be no problem! Its when you go between Sata and Nvme that you can have issues
@@PCBuilderChannel Thank you very much! Best Channel on YT for Building PC!!!
Right now there’s a deal on the 990 evo 1tb for $69.99.
A no brainer buy for a new build and game storage.
rewatching this and still appreciates Jason still includes console platforms for this content even tho the channel is literally says "PC Builder" xD
When WD Black 4Tb hit ~$250 a little while ago, I picked one up. I don't think I'll need more internal storage for quite some time.
Hi ! I might ask a dump question already answered, but is it a good two have two different SSD on your machine for dividing OS and Games ? Also if you are using VMs, which kind of SSD we should focus on ? Thank you for your video.
Jason says that doesn't matter so no need to have two SSDs.
These days you don't need to do that for regular gaming/use
It is not bad at all but not strictly necessary either. What is almost never told in these PC build guides is that if the system has only one drive, to partition that drive is very wise, because if you would have to reinstall Windows (or install/upgrade to newer version) then you do not have to save the files (your games and possibly personal stuff, music, photos, etc.) from the other partition(s) elsewhere.
Because of this personally I always use a small, separate drive for the OS only, for me it is more convenient setup.
Doing 1st build thanks fam subbed 👌🏻
Thanks so much for the sub! And good luck with your first build, very exciting! Check out our How To Build A PC Video for some more tips. ;)
I have just picked up a Crucial P3 Plus 2TB in the uk from AZ for £89.99 to use as a main drive for a new AMD build.
the T500 2tb not being brought up is wild imo
Why
Netac is great as well.
Is it worth waiting for the Prime day sales in July? Thank you again for all of your information and videos!
For SSDs I wouldn't personally, prices are going up. But of course you never know.
10 mins into this video , greating info ....subbed
So glad it was helpful! Thank you for the sub. Hope you keep enjoying the content
Awesome comparison. But, which NVME would then be the best for Windows 11 OS?
I saw a booger on the finger😮. Anyway I use 3 nvme 2T each, and I was running low on storage so I added a 8T spinner via usb-c. Works well.
I just have a question. Why do you choose the WD blue sn580 over the WD black sn770?
At least in my area, the 770 is a little bit cheaper with a higher max read & type speed.
I’m thinking of buying a 2TB Crucial P3 plus, on paper it’s the best value one I’ve seen, would you recommend it?
Tends to be overpriced for its budget level performance. But if you find a good deal go for it. Similar to the other budget NVME drives.
Your monologue/introduction Is amazing Mr Jason jajaja, I always repeat it in My mind "STOP buying bad XXXXX" jajaja thanks for the recommendations
haha! Happy to help (:
4TB more TB/buck interesting :) Those silicon power are starting to pop up here in Europe now, so that's nice.
Is it worth buying a motherboard with a Pcie5 slot just incase improvements are made to the performance and prices come down for the gen5?
No. Total waste of money in my opinion
@@PCBuilderChannel sounds good, appreciate it!

Would you recommend the klevv 4tb ssd over a Samsung 4tb for gaming
so happy this video came out, as i'm in the market for storage
Greetings from italy man, you are a name you can trust, awesome. Keep up the good work, thank you so much for these precious informations
You're so welcome, thanks for the kind words! Hello from the States, and thank you for watching :))

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I decided to get the Samsung 980 since I game and use editing software, plus it was on sale.
Hello, I wanted to ask if the problems of Samsung SSDs have been solved with the update, especially the 990pro series or not?
My understanding is yes
@@PCBuilderChannel Thank you very much for your answer💙
The most misleading thing about m.2 ssds is it's size. They look so big in the pictures, but they are barely bigger than your finger.
I call them gum stick drives.
There's something I don't understand, sorry for my ignorance, if the difference between traditional SATA III cabled SDDs and Nvme M.2 Drives is basically unperseptible, why not just buy a SATA III drive instead of the M.2 variants
Because in general M.2 drives are cheaper
Love your stuff Jason!! You've been a huge help in choosing the components to build my first gaming PC. I'm just about ready to start ordering all my parts. Very excited. Can anybody answer what may be a stupid question... is the Team Group MP44 just the Gen 4 version of the MP34? Thanks guys.
Not sure but it has good reviews so it is a good choice.
When buying NVME SSDs is it still important to buy from a reputable company? In the era of magnetic drives I tried to stick to better brands. Its such a pain if your storage craps out.
just replaced my old laptop drive from hdd to ssd. Performance change is very significant. Old but better. still have 4gb ram though
Thanks Jason! Quick question if you've got the time to answer: For the PCIe adapter, why do you need an PCIE x4? A x1 adapter would also work fine but at a slower speed, right? (Max 1gb/s but still faster than SATA). Send love to the cats :)
Hi Jason Great Video and Great timing with my build. Just wondering what are your thoughts on the KC3000 ssd?
I thought they had phased that drive out. Good drive with DRAM if you find a deal on it.
Had one died under a week. How? No idea. Was not expecting that at all. It has very good components on it.
@@PCBuilderChannel Thanks great to know. They are $195 CAN here in Canada for 2TB
What do you think about upgrading to the crucial t700&705. Currently running the Samsung 970 pro plus .
There's going to be little benefit upgrading to the T700 since pcie gen 5 speeds just aren't necessary for most people, even most professionals. I would just get a decent gen 4 drive if you need more storage.
@@trueNahobino any recommendations ? no budget .
@@TennBoxingFan423 980 Pro is good for professional work, Wetern Digital's SN770 or Crucial's P3 Plus are also good options that aren't as expensive.
Some boards will drop lanes if you populate certain spots. It is best to download the manual and check there.
got a p44 pro 2tb on newegg for a $100 during black friday... cant beat that
Your videos are fantastic.
@@kelley09162 ok thanks. I'll look into those you listed.

@@PCBuilderChannel awesome!
Hi Jason! Quick question, could you please tell me if the 5600x and 7800XT is still a good combo?
Good combo, that's the max GPU I'd pair with a 5600. See the second to last video on the channel for more on a great sample 5600 build. Its our "Best Budget Builds" guide
The invisible xylophone playing is very hard to unsee once you spot it
currently the western digital in the uk is about £80 for 1tb. However the kingston fury renegade is on deal for £65. Would you recommend that ssd at all?
Yes the Kingston is a good choice
I've found that gen3 nvme drives mostly aren't even available anymore. When I find one of those it is more expensive than gen4 nvme.
Also, anything smaller than 4TB seems to be a waste of m.2 socket. Those are best price/GB where I live. 🤷🏻♂️
Bigger drives usually have better endurance (TBW, terabytes written) ratings aswell. If you are doing write heavy workloads like video editing or transcoding, endurance starts to matter.
Got the 2TB MP44 for $116. How does it compare to other Gen 4 SSDs?
Another great video by Mr Bear 🐻…… sorry Jason 😉😅😂🤣.
Terrific and well explained video Jason and didn’t realise Xbox S/X used a proprietary connector …… I always wondered why the Xbox storage was soooo pricey! I’m not really a console gamer tbh and aren’t fully up to date on their specs etc.
Thank you so much Michael, he and I both thank you! :D We appreciate the support!
Do you recommend cheap 4TB Sata SSD for large gaming storage?
Only if its actually cheaper than NVME which I doubt
@@PCBuilderChannel Here in my country (Indonesia), 4TB Team QX Sata SSD is only around 150 USD, which is insanely cheap compared to the rest. And it's sold at a high profile PC store, so I doubt it's just a scam.
