More on skincare tips & tricks. Updated 3 times a week.
    .
This video is about chemical peels; the basics on superficial peels & how I employ them.
    .
AHA peels: Include glycolic, lactic, mandelic, & citric acid. One of the oldest peels, the original AHA peel was made with sour milk (lactic acid) from the days of ancient Egypt. Glycolic peels are originally derived from sugar cane, whilst citric acid peels come from citrus fruits. AHAs require neutralization. OTC creams and lotions are buffered solutions with higher pH compared to clinical grade peels.
    .
    .
Use: Rejuvenation, pigmentation, melasma, milia, sun damage, sun spots
    .
    .
Pregnancy safety: Safe in pregnancy, safe in lactation
    .
    .
    Downtime: Nil- AKA lunchtime peels
BHA peels: Salicylic acid is the sole member of the BHA or Beta hydroxy acid group. This is a self neutralising peel, with pseudo frosting that is usually short lived (less than 15-45 min).BHAs are lipophilic with better penetration into the oil-sebaceous glands cf AHA peels. My goto concentrations range from 8 to 30%.
    .
    .
Uses: Acne, blackheads, congestion, some cases of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
    .
    .
Pregnancy safety: Washes, 1-2 % BHA- Salicylic acid are safe. Most specialists will not use BHAs in pregnancy
    .
    .
Downtime: variable, depending on skin sensitivity & concentration of salicylic acid. Typically 12 -24 hours of redness
Retinoid Peels: Include retinoic acid & high strength retinol. My favourite formulations range from 1-5% in a good skin toned makeup base. Application time varies from 2-12 hours. I like retinoid peels due to their effects on cells, sebum (oil), reduction of c.acnes, exfoliative properties as well as their pigment reducing effects. This peel is flexible - see below.
    .
    .
Use: Skin rejuvenation, skin pigmentation including melasma, freckles, sun damage, open pores, mild wrinkles, mild to moderate active acne
    .
    .
Pregnancy safety: Not recommended in pregnancy due to high concentrations of vitamin A
    .
    .
Downtime: Ideally delayed peeling will be expected, commencing 24 to 48 hours after application. Expect to peel for 1-4 days thereafter. In some cases makeup is hard to conceal the flakes of skin.
Duration of peel will depend on skin sensitivity, retinoid sensitivity, pre peel prep (acetone, AHA primer etc…), as well as the concentration of peel, and application time. My nurses and therapist will guide you as to the expected downtime
    .
    .
I also use novel peels including Cosmelan & Dermamelan in my practice. Patient selection is critical. These peels can treat some forms of melasma as well as PIH & general pigmentation.

I was hoping you'd address the PIH, since I had some after a TCA peel...since I'm 1/2 Asian, I opted not to do any more, but sometimes wonder if it just takes more sessions to bring the pigmentation to the top and get rid of it.

This is why it’s important to see a dermatologist for a consultation. What you’re describing could be the result of multiple factors: pigment rising from the deeper layers to the top (appearing darker but certainly beneficial for your skin) or rebound pigmentation due to the inflammation (in which case, perhaps you don’t respond well to more aggressive peels and need to pre and post treat the skin with lightening creams such as hydroquinone).

    • @LisaMonique

LOVED this, Dr. Davin! As a 63 yr old who suffered chronic cystic acne until the age of 30 (at which point I underwent 1 round of Accutane with spectacular results) I have used chemical peels from that time forward and really feel that they rejuvenate and have even taken the edge off of some box car scarring...….(not perfect, but acceptable). They give a glow to the skin which I feel is youthful. Could you please talk about TCA and FROSTING. I perform my own mild 15% (?) tca but don't layer because while I like a good peel I want to err on the side of caution.

Really great video! Thank you! I started doing glycolic peels in 2014 - starting very low and working my way up. I took photos before I began and now more recently or five to six years later and there is a major difference in my under eyes lines and wrinkles and texture. It is greatly improved and I was so surprised that something so simple as a even a mild glycolic peel could do so much. Basically my undereye area really aged me and it looks more youthful now than then. So, I really like glycolic peels. And, I am now recovering on day 4 from TCA peel. Hope to have good results. :)

@@Deeryluu Hi Cally! I started out really low at 10 or 20% Then, eventually I was doing 50%. I posted a full video on it with details and closeups too if you want to check it out. :) I did very carefully apply it under the eye area and pretty close to the lash line (super carefully).

      Dr. Lim's choice chemical peel:
In office - 2 - 4% retinoic acid peel; 1 week before the in office peel, Use an OTC AHA nightly for 1 week to increase effectiveness.
Leave on for 4 hours - 12 hours
      Salicylic acid for acne.
NOT AHA peels at home. They need to be neutralized; yes, in office; start at 10% and slowly to work up to 70%.

I know this comment is old but I've just discovered the BienPeel I think it's called. This was after looking into the BioPeel myself. I have zero experience with peels "yet" however I think the BioPeel seems to be too thick of a consistency for the TCA to penetrate through and give any significant result even at 35 %. Granted it has all the other goodies in it but I think the mix of amino acids and squalane etc looks like it blocks a lot the TCA's performances out.
I say this as I watched a couple of underwhelming videos on here where people didn't rate it, or see much difference at all and it got me thinking this may be why.

I’m so confused. I love your channel and trust your word more than anything... I came across a video by platinum skin care that says AHA’s are self neutralizing and that you can just splash water on them or use a baking soda mix to neutralize. A company called Universal Company sells Mandelic acid but when I asked if their neutralizer came with the purchase, they say that Mandelic is self neutralizing?? Are they out of their minds or can it be just the way these companies formulate?

Once I heard about PHA acids. I have very sensitive skin with acne so up to now I can't find the right treatement for my skin. Maybe you could say something about PHA acids? I wonder if they can clear blackheads and are good for sensitive skin? Bakiuchol is also a hot topic now.

Hi, I've had several TCA peels and liked them other than the issue of sun sensitivity after. I've recently found out about PRX-T33 which claims all if the benefits of a deep TCA without the down time or issues of sun sensitivity during the summer. Have you used this product or have opinions on the effectiveness of the PRX- T33. Thanks

Atm it seems Prx33 along with the BioPeel and BienPeel seem to be the topic of conversation right now. Although Bio looks too thick for the TCA to penetrate and people don't seem to be having any significant results, which for the price is shocking.

Best peel ever is the Perfect Derma Peel. Way better than the retinol peel.

Do you have information on Halo Lasers, can you do a video on that Laser, pros/cons/contraindications. I’ve been researching lasers vs chemical peels for old acne scars on cheeks and blackheads/enlarged pores and age/sun spots. Thank you in advance I appreciate your videos. :)

Can you talk about fragrance in products and how it relates to skin sensitivity and other topics that go with it? What to choose...? Etc. Thank you for the video.
