Dr. Lim, Your video has been super helpful.....finally I know what is happening with my skin around my mouth & my eyes. I went to an allergist, spent three months, and over $1000 in co-pay for two different types of allergy patch tests with no relief and no diagnosis. After watching this video and following your advice I FINALLY got a diagnosis and a cure. A million thanks!!!!!!

I got perioral dermatitis in April and it was around my eyes too. No history of steroid use on my face and I rarely wear heavy makeup although I did begin using elidel in March to treat seborrheic dermatitis that had spread to my nose area. The rash cleared with antibiotics although I do still get a few bumps around that area but no dryness or redness that I originally had. I also had a rash on my neck so I was patch tested and tested positive for nickel, gold, propylene glycol, linalool, and MCI/MI allergies. I’ve since removed all offending skincare and makeup items from my routine. I believe I am predisposed to it as I do suffer from mild rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis and the elidel (which has propylene glycol in it), stress from college, and allergies created the perfect storm.

This last summer I broke out exactly like this on my face and was diagnosed impetigo by 2 doctors and 1 dermatologist. Finally after no improvement I found another dermatologist who suggested it was an allergic reaction. It’s been rough... was on antibiotics for 2.5 months straight, life was miserable, and I had to take 2 months off of work because it was so frightful-looking and itchy. I’ve found that corn syrup brings it on! It was only after a second derm told me it was an allergic reaction that I started paying attention to my diet more. I’m so glad I’ve found you and this video. I also had severe acne at the time, and this rash in addition to my acne make me question if life was worth living at the time.

I haven’t been properly diagnosed, but I’m 99.9% positive that this I what I’ve been dealing with for the last year. Since COVID-19 hit and we’ve had to wear masks, I’ve noticed that I get flare ups of little red bumps all around my mouth and they extend a little to my cheeks sometimes. They’re never painful, but they itch sometimes. This whole time I thought it was just eczema caused by the masks, but the cream I was prescribed only calms it down for a day or two and it comes right back. Thank you for this video, it was very informative and helped me start the process of getting this under control!

Thanks so much for posting. I tried the tumeric paste after reading your post (Id just finished a 7 day course of antibiotic 4xdaily with no improvement to my perioral dermatitis) . After 3 days now of applying tumeric during the day and a small amount of coconut oil at night I have had amazing results. Thank you so much again. This will be my go-to treatment in the future. I think the tumeric dried up the blisters and also has an antiseptic quality which stopped further spread. It took away the itch immediately after using it and although it felt a little tight and yes I was quite yellow around the area, it was well worth it.

Holy hell, do you have any clue how mind-blowing this is to me? I saw a Derm up here in Canada, maybe 3-5 years ago now.. and the Derm was told to be one of the best in the province. He said to me in his 79 year-old voice, "I've never seen such a thing in my life, I'm going to go to bed for years trying to figure this out. But I retire next week, so I'll be useless you at that point."
He never did call me, of course, but the fact that I just recalled this event _yesterday_ is all that much more ironic.
Had to tell ya a lil story, sorry for the W.O.T. Bless you and your works, my word. 💕

This video was incredibly useful and informational. I have had POD twice in the last 2 years. I know the most recent cause was definitely toner, make up and eleuphrat ointment that i was using to treat a rash on my face. Even though i've had POD before, I didn't know that steroids can bring on a flare. That information is so good to know now and i will aim to avoid using any steroids in the future as much as possible.
My current POD looks rather different than the photos in the video. I suspect i have a particularly bad case of it. The area of skin below my lower lip and down to my chin blistered. Then the blisters popped by themselves and i was left with a yellow crust over the area. I thought it was a staph infection and took myself to a GP. He diagnosed it as POD straight away and gave me a script for doxycycline. Since i've been taking the antibiotics, (4 days now) the POD has gotten worse. It's spread in bumps and blisters to random areas around my nostrils, chin, cheeks and jawline. My skin feels really hot, oily (wet from the yucky blisters) and uncomfortable. I have definitely stopped applying toner, make up and eleuphrat ointment onto my face completely.
I'm a registered nurse working in aged care and since the POD came on, I've worked 2 x 8 hour shifts wearing a surgical mask the whole time.
I needed to vent how gross this condition feels and how embarrassed i feel about it.
I'm starting to wonder how long the ABs take to work, if i was misdiagnosed and if the surgical mask wearing could be making things worse...
Can i just bury my head in a sandpit for the next 2-3 months? Ick.

    • @asherasator
      @asherasator ปีที่แล้ว

Antibiotics are a major cause of this because they can alter the microbiome allowing yeasts to proliferate on the skin like malassazia and candida which is usually the cause. Antihistamines play a huge role too because they affect H1 receptors that also control sebaceous glands which then don't secrete properly causing further skin drying and damage, that allows yeasts that feed off the fat of your cells and microbes to enter deeper into the dermis, then the immune system wants to react. It's a horrible viscous cycle mostly caused by psychotic MDs.

That's because these facial conditions are usually fungal.

Hey Dr Lim - thanks for sharing. I wanted to comment as I have had PD flare ups for the past few winters, and my experience seems to differ from some of the common examples you were sharing, and may resonate with your viewers.
I haven't ever used any type of steroid cream or tablets, so I know that hasn't been the cause, however through trial and error, I believe that it is down to damage to the skin barrier, caused (usually) by over exfoliation.
The first time I got it, it was after using LE Cleanse and Polish with a pretty aggressive use of the muslin cloth twice or more per day (and this is consistent - I have tried the C&P a couple of times since, thinking it was something else but this always gives me PD :-/).
The most recent time, was through a particularly cold spell last winter, and introduction of a fairly strong AHA - though this time, it was mostly around my eyes, rather than the mouth).
Each time I think the skin barrier protection was reduced, either through chemical or physical exfoliation, and when I removed the irritant, it gradually improved but never went away entirely and was extremely sensitive to flaring up/spreading after any irritation with too hot water, knocking any papules with a flannel etc.
The first time, I cleared it up with a prescription of Clindamycin cream (the alcohol free formulation) but obviously the PD has recurred several times since and I have been since informed that this cream is not prescribed for PD any more. Also, as I am sure a lot of your viewers would, I really, REALLY would prefer not to go down the oral antibiotic route as I have spent so long trying to build a healthy gut flora, and antibiotics just wreck that (and often cause other probs, like candida - ugh! Frying pan...fire...)
The main thing I have found that has given improvement, almost overnight, after reading a few forums are products that contain quite high concentrations (~15-40%) of zinc oxide - such as mineral sunscreen/suncreen sticks or diaper creams, such as Boudreaux Butt Paste Max Strength (do you know why that would be?).
This is recommended along with violet extract (which I haven't personally tried), but both are peppered with PD survivor stories on Amazon reviews. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
I have also found that fatty acids and ceramides in my products has helped my skin recover the barrier. (I tried an azalaic acid and this had no effect, ditto not wearing makeup, unfortunately! I think air-con, heating, harsh wind and cold climate also played a part, as I rarely get PD in summer).
Anyway, that's my experience. It really is such a dreadful condition - there's so little help available and it is a huge knock to people's confidence, so anyone suffering who reads this far, I really empathise, and hope it gets better soon. (And try the Butt Cream ;p)

I've been having perioral dermatitis for almost a year now, at first it was misdiagnosed as acne which probably made it a million times worse (the treatment, not the misdiagnosis), but I have now had proper treatment for it for five month and while it has gotten better, it isn't going away. I have not used any make up or skincare products or whatsoever since I got it.
And now someone decides to tell me that inhaling corticosteroids makes it worse...
    like.
I've been inhaling this stuff for years.
I had to tell my dermatologist all the medication I was taking.
    I feel betrayed.
... though it's not like I can stop using it, so...
Maybe it's because I'm not getting oral antibiotics. We tried one, but I got like the worst side effect that only 1 in 10000 patients get (severe joint pains) and then my dermatologist said, we're just gonna go with creams. Also, it's better for me to not take oral antibiotics, because my digestion always gets messed up for months.
I'm not seeing my dermatologist again until march, but if it hasn't improved by then, I'm probably gonna ask her for oral antibiotics.
I'm just really frustrated by now and also I miss using make up, but I don't wanna use it if there's a chance that'll make it worse!

Hello. Thanks for a video. It does look easy treatment for me. I am 48, I never had any skin problems in my life! Out of nowhere I got perioral dermatitis 3 years ago and it keeps coming back. I got rashes around my mouth, little under one eye and little under my nose. I thought it's food allergy at first, so treated myself with hydrocortisone, which didn't help. I went to dermatologist, he said right away that it's perioral dermatitis and prescribed me antibiotics for 3 month and a steroid cream (Elidel) , which helped right away in 4 days. After I finished taking everything, problems came back. I went to another dermatologists, she said it's related to stress and she told me to quit steroid cream, because it's too strong and dangerous. She prescribed me azaleik acid (Finacea), which doesn't do anything. I stopped using after one week, because it makes it worse. Now what??? What should I use? I am sick and tired... 😒😖

To anyone who has a child with this: my son developed POD from using topical steroids prescribed by his doctor for "eczema", which his new pediatrician doesn't think was ever eczema. We've been around and around with self treatment for a bit, and then mupirocin and lamisil, which caused everything to be worse, to now oral clarithromycin and coconut oil, prescribed by his new pediatrician. It's only been overnight, but the inflammation seems to be slightly lessened, and his skin isn't so dry and irritated. The topical antibiotic caused a sensitivity to his already irritated skin, so now we're trying to purge that along with steroids. Also, I've learned that highly occlusive things like vasoline and aquafor seem to aggravate it, at least In his case. So, just take your kiddo to his doc right away, and save yourself a headache. He has a dermatologist appt in 2 weeks for follow up and to establish a good skincare routine to hopefully prevent further issues. Hope this will help someone!

This time last year I developed rosacea. Horrid. Bright. Painful rosacea. I had never had it before, ever. I would wake in the night scratching my face bloody. I saw a dermatologist. Three weeks on a $50 for a 15ml for a week tube, not much change. Four weeks on a $15 for 30ml tube, not much change. Revive” for six weeks, fairly good results, but still breaking out. Problem is, I’m highly sensitive to ABs. So, 3 inconclusive biopsies later, I am on 12weeks of doxycycline. 9 weeks in and my skin is clearing finally. I feel like I have the start of bad ‘flu all the time and fevers, but it seems to be working. I have worn NO makeup for a year, argh. I only started using skincare after 3 months as I just couldn’t bear it anymore. Clarins is my best friend. I swear I have aged 10years.... A year altogether dealing with this. With a face like a itchy cranberry pudding. What caused it? They don’t know. Might have been “stress” - has been stressful having it.... I am part of a unique sub group, fair skinned, thin skinned, Northern European Caucasian, post menopausal ( lord how I hate that term) women. I’m surprised the word “neurotic” didn’t creep in as well..(!) oh lucky me and my genetic jackpot!!🃏🃏🃏🃏

Ahhhhh thank you Dr Davin you are the BEST. I have had this so bad recently (although i have had this on and off for years, i never knew the peeling around my mouth and nostrils was due to this), but despite my antibiotic course, it still is hanging around. Any deviation in routine or attempt to re introduce brings it on strong. I guess i need to do a longer course of antibiotics. I was considering going to my local dermatologist but it isn't in my budget right now, so thank you so much for making such an informative video.

Hi Dr Lim, I love your content - so helpful. I believe I have perioral dermatitis as well as some large hormonal blind pimples on my cheeks and head. My GP prescribed cephalexin (4 tabs a day for 5 days ) as well as Azelic Acid gel and a salicylic acid cleanser. I’m only on day two but my skin is so red and looks worse! Do you think this is the right way to treat perioral dermatitis? Is it always a bad idea to try and clear it with a steroid cream? Thank you I’m advance.

Hey! I've been getting peri-oral dermatitis for about 20 years I generally get a bout or 2 per year. I've discovered that any type of sulfur-based cleanser or cream will cause the rash (even derivatives) and salicylates.
For me, using glycolics with a barrier repair cream containing antibacterial minerals can sometimes save me a round of tetracycline.

Okay soooo I’m stressing out about my skin. I wanna say about a week ago my skin had broken out in a super itchy rash mainly around my chin and under my nose. I have no idea what could’ve caused the flare up and I’m starting to get really depressed because I can’t seem to get over this. My chin has developed a “crust” of dry skin, whatever I put on it, it dries/soaks it up. The rash has gone way down because I’ve been taking Benadryl to help the inflammation and redness and itchiness. If anyone has any advice at all I would really appreciate it. The thing is I don’t even know if it is dermatitis, I thought it was just an allergic reaction to something but not I’m skeptical.

I have never used heavy or even any make ups or steroids on my face, and got POD in my 40s suddenly. And that after I have used nothing but organic lotions and sunscreens for over 2 decades. I believe POD comes from the inside somehow, possibly has to do with the gut flora, or hormonal change. I have always had super clear skin too! Since I barely ever use makeup, the area was always able to breathe and it never got better. I have to use desodine ointment daily in order to keep it under control. Very sad as no dermatologist so far could help me, and all the causes you mention do not apply to me.

    Hi Dr Lim,
    Great video - Thank you.
Last month is the first time I've ever had periocular dermatitis. But I have seen the one around my nose before.
After sorting through my makeup products I think the culprit may have been a mattifying primer (containing Salicylic acid) which gave me the the undereye rash!
The problem is that I have been using products suitable for acne-prone skin which have irritated some parts of my face that may be drier now.
My GP prescribed a cream for it but seriously considering the anti-biotic option as it's been affecting me for a few weeks now.

I got rid of my perioral dermatitis by simply not using fluoride toothpaste anymore. Not sure what brought it on but it started during the summer and I’d been using more sunscreen than usual. I do not wear makeup on a regular basis, never have. Also, I’d been using Flonase, which is a corticosteroid. The rash was only around my mouth. Very odd. I was prescribed an antibiotic and it didn’t help.
