    What is the science behind retinol?
    Retinol belongs to the powerful family of molecules known as retinoids. These are vitamin A derivatives with multiple functions in the skin including reduction of pigmentation, improved cellular turnover, stimulation of collagen synthesis, & reduction of oil production.
    What are the benefits of retinol?
    Improved skin texture & quality. Retinol has antioxidant, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, as well as antibacterial properties, hence its use in acne prone skin.
    Anti-aging. Retinol decreases pigmentation but increases collagen production. This results in clearer skin texture with less wrinkles & smaller pores.

    Don't forget to mention that retinol should never be used around the eyes (even though you would really want to) because it is proven to damage the oil glands that moisturize the eye and over time can lead to dry eye disease (which may even be irreversible). There are way too many dermatologist videos on the topic that only consider the effects on the skin, but if you also check out what the opthalmologists are saying, they're pretty clear on the issue...

      Damn, I'd better stop using it around my eyes! I already have dry eyes to begin with. But what if it migrates there from elsewhere on your face, since people usually use it at night and then go to sleep with their face on a pillow?

    • @aszechy
      @aszechy ปีที่แล้ว +37

      @@SchlichteToven Yes, that can be an issue too, but I guess they don't know exactly. The video I saw said to leave out a huge area corresponding to where a sleep mask would be - that's essentially half your face... (I personally don't leave that much out but try to put the retinol on at least an hour before bed so it has time to absorb properly before I hit the pillow.) I guess you could try to experiment, maybe cut it out entirely for a while and see if your eyes improve.

    Important to mention that when using retinol one must be extra careful with the sun, since retinol drastically increases sensitivity to UV light, broad spectrum SPF is a must. Another thing - it is forbidden for pregnant and nursing women. Even if the chance of it affecting the baby is small - better to be on the safe side.

    Hey Guys, You can in fact used Retinol with Vitamin C during the night. Here is how you do it. Cleanse your face and let it dry then apply vitamin C, wait for at least 30 mins for your skin ph to come back to normal (since Vit. C has lower ph than retinol) then apply retinol. Wait 5 to 10 min then apply moisturizer with niacinamide. Now if you have sensitive skin, I would only use one of the two product until you skin get used to it.

    It’s understood that acids might make it more prone to irritation if you have sensitive skin but it’s not exactly ‘bad’ for your skin. I read that not mixing acids with retinol came from a study that has now been disproven and using both in moderation especially with a good moisturizer is fine. I wonder what anyone’s experiences have been…

    • @Robin-bn3hv
      @Robin-bn3hv ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on your skin's tolerance level of whichever ingredients (acids or anything else) you want to use. My skin won't tolerate tretinoin (not yet, anyway) but does well with retinaldehyde, and I can layer it 1-3 times a week with a leave-on 10% AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) exfoliant. I can also use vitamin C (ascorbic acid) with it. Some people's skin won't tolerate vitamin C even without vitamin A (using this label to cover retinoic acid and all its derivatives like retinol) involved, so those people obviously shouldn't try layering vitamin C and vitamin A. Some people's skin is sensitive to glycolic acid at any strength but will tolerate mandelic acid, a gentler AHA; they might be able to use mandelic acid alongside vitamin A.
      If in doubt, the safest route, besides asking your own doctor, is to alternate days or time of day: use vitamin A at night and other active ingredients in the morning, or use vitamin A on a completely different day than other actives.

    Please remember to let the skin dry after the shower for at least 30 minutes before retinol, if you are using a potent retinol, specially tretinoin (adapalen/differin)

      If you leave your just-washed skin unmoisturized for 30 minutes, your skin will lose hydration. That’s not what you want, especially while using a retinoid like tretinoin which can cause excessive dryness. Instead, go through your skincare routine as usual. After you apply a moisturizer to seal in hydration, apply the retinoid over it. That way, your skin’s nicely moisturized before vitamin A joins the party, plus a moisturizer can help buffer some of the retinoid’s irritating side effects.

      @@Robin-bn3hv Yes, you can use a cream after washing (not necessarly), but you should wait 30 minutes before aplying tretinoin to avoid iritation. Beginners can try instead to "sandwich" tretinoin - Moisturiser + Tretinoin + Moisturiser

      @@enacheadriana654 Unless you're one of the (probably rare) people who truly don't need to use a moisturizer of some kind, it's a bad idea to let your freshly washed skin sit for 30 minutes without moisturizing it to prevent water loss. You can apply moisturizer and then wait 30 minutes to apply tretinoin over it, sure. But without moisturizer, people with dry skin, or even those with combo skin, will likely end up with even more dryness than tretinoin itself can cause.
      Also, you don't really have to sandwich tretinoin between 2 layers of moisturizer. You can if you want, of course. But all a retinoid newbie needs is a layer of moisturizer followed by tretinoin. The ol' sandwich method won't cause issues. I'm just saying it's not necessary for most newbies.
