Lavender Town: overshadowed by Creepypasta

  • Lavender Town is often thought to be one of the most terrifying locations in the Pokemon universe, and for a lot of people, this is because of the rumors surrounding it. But you know that these are just urban legends... right? In this video, I go on a bit of a rant about Lavender Town, and the real information (or lack thereof) surrounding it.

@@Xx_Oleander_xX We know by now at least that Unown wasn't planned until around 1998 or 1999. Unown weren't in the 1997 Spaceworld Demo. And because of a manga about Satoshi Tajiri, we do know what Pokemon were planned to be in gen 1 that were cut. I'm pretty sure most of them never made a return, and if they did they were changed drastically.
There were Pokemon based on a deer, elephant, shark, and a cactus for example. They eventually made Pokemon based on those things but the changes are so drastic that you can't really say that they're based on the BETA designs themselves that it's hard to know if they took inspiration from those cut BETA Pokemon or if they just made Pokemon based on those things without thinking about the BETA Pokemon. The Pokemon Missingno. are there for are probably those.
The reason why Ho-oh, Togepi, Marill and Donphan appeared in the anime before the gen 2 games is because the anime was being worked on sometime after the 1997 Spaceworld Demo came out. They were able to have a sneak peek of final Pokemon designs before anybody else so they could work on adding those Pokemon to the anime as a promotion to the 2 Gen games.

One thing worth noting is also that the exact motivations of the creators of Pokemon with Lavender town was to clarify in a serious way the difference between death and Pokemon fainting, and that death was a rather sad thing. Reveling in the creepiness of Lavender Town is the essentially the opposite of their intentions.

    • @Stathio
      @Stathio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Yes and no. I mean, that's a really good point that they are totally trying to highlight that difference, but they themselves were still totally reveling in the creepiness in the original game, way before the internet got their hands on it- the possessed spirit channeler craving blood, the NPC talking about the creepy white hand on your shoulder (which even made it into the Pokemon Origins anime) like... you're right, but they still pushed the creepiness big time, so blaming the fans isn't quite fair.

    • @MatthewCampbell765

@@Stathio I'll admit I might be overstating it, they definitely played up the creepiness to a notable degree. To clarify, I don't think fans are doing anything wrong by playing up the creepiness even further, just that one should keep in mind that isn't necessarily what the game was going for.
For what it's worth, I'll say at the very least the music is easily one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard and I did forget that part about the lady saying they need blood.

    6. If the Lavender Town Syndrome incidents actually did happen, then Pokemon wouldn’t even be a thing outside of the 1st game solely in Japan due to the tragedies.
In addition, the remaining copies on store shelves would immediately get recalled, destroyed and/ or taken in for government investigations, anyone who still owned the game would be highly advised to hand it in to the authorities or destroy it themselves, and Game Freak & Nintendo would be held guilty of essentially creating a digital child killer on a national scale which would at the bare minimum permanently tarnish their reputation and legacy worldwide.

The real shit is that through the leaked beta/demo of Pokémon, you can get good guesses about a Konami franchise.
    - In that beta/demo, the play area is called "Silent Hill". The creators had the Shizuoka prefecture in mind when building the levels and just literally translated 静岡 in English for the area name.
    - There's almost nothing called "Silent Hill" in the USA, yet Team Silent decided on that name for their take on a low key American resort town in some flyover state.
    - Shizuoka prefecture has a lot of terrain that's similar to the game, and also has areas with the foggy resort town vibe, what with Mt. Fuji being either partly in it or at least next to it.
Team Silent probably just also literally translated 静岡 in English, and I'd guess that at some early point in brainstorming it was to maybe take place there but then they decided to make it "international" by relocating it to the USA

    • @ViviSectia
      @ViviSectia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's very unlikely since Konami's goal from the beginning for their next game that eventually became Silent Hill was that it was supposed to appeal to the United States and was going to be Hollywood-like. It's also well documented that the town itself was inspired by Stephen King and David Lynch and even European and Russian depictions of American towns though the actual terrain layout in the first three games is taken from the Towadako and Tazawako areas. Also, apparently the movie Kindergarten Cop was also an inspiration since the school was a recreation of the one from the movie.

I came here from the mario64 video, and I have to say, your content is pretty good!
as for this video, I have to agree. suicide shouldn't be a plot device, especially in creepypastas. not only is it over used, it's also pretty offencive to people who had close ones die due to suicide, I'd say.
my brother still believes in this, despite him being 3 years older than me-
keep up the good work, hope to see more of your videos some time later!

The lavender town music scared the shit out of me when I was young. I was a kiddo who really was intrested in scary shit. Now I have gotten spooked enough that horror movies that are just blood and gore don't even widen my eyes. It has to be some eldritch bigger than man monstrosity that corrupts the minds of individuals who look at it so they cannot describe it.

Dark subjects can be done well, that's like saying murder or rape can never be a plot device because some people screw it up and youtube had shat so much on the screw ups they were the only thing fresh on someones mind when they hear about it.

I was 12 years-old in middle school and still pretty impressionable when I read these creepypastas, and while I know better now that Lavender Town is harmless, I still experienced the placebo effect in regards to the song making you feel ill. I listened to the “Beta” version of Lavender Town on repeat on a few occassions back then and even at age 21 whenever I hear 8-bit music it triggers migraines and nausea for me now, even though it didn’t when I was a kid.

The Japanese version of the Lavender Town theme actually is slightly different, but it didn't cause health issues or anything. They likely just changed it because its higher pitch was annoying. That's where the urban legend came from.

When I was younger I had that one nightmare where I was browsing youtube in the darkness of the night, I found one video that was titled something along the lines of "Lavender Town Theme (ORIGINAL)". I wanted to make sure that it's safe to listen to, so I checked out the comments before watching it. One of them was "Hey, is this from Sonic.EXE? :D". The familiar casual tone gave me some ease of mind and I pressed play...
Turns out it was some fucking loud earrape thing. It woke me up, obviously.

As a freshman In highschool I heard abt this creepy pasta. So I looked up a lot of stuff on it and stumbled across a “theme” of lavender town which I heard before but I listened to it for a couple of seconds and sorta did feel sick. A lot of what it is is your brain getting a certain chemical that makes you afraid or it overloads your brain with endorphins and it can cause headaches. I would get migraines before so it causes me being sick. It was just weird hearing the song and immediately getting a headache due to the frequency

I’d like to imagine this “Lavender Town Syndrome” rumor was started by one of Pokémon’s competitors to scare parents away from it and steal some of their market share lol.
Still obviously not true, but that’s at least 100x more plausible than Game Freak deciding to kill their own customers in this weird roundabout way for no reason.

    Strange…
I only started hearing about the Super Mario 64 Wario apparition within the past seven days, first on Swanky Box, and then a video that covered a few other aspects of it's history. Then it's brought up at the end of this video…
I turned thirty-four three days ago… I know the lavender town rumours, 'pikablu' rumours, 'L is Real', and even about 'super secret characters' in SSB and SSBM, among others.
But I guess I've missed some rumour millings… I'm glad the internet exists, to archive history from even before the internet was conceptualized.

Needless to say I really enjoyed the video, keep it up.

Hey the wierdest pokemon thing I've heard of was in talking to few people about my worst nightmare as a child was the missingno being on my gameboy and I freaked out and tried to turn it off it wouldn't turn off freaked out more and tried to smash my gameboy and in the broken pieces was a missingno and the volume so loud I woke up crying, the thing that has messed me up is that years later when talking to other people about it some have had the same dream and like me find missingno incredibly uncomfortable to be around one friend refusing to talk about the subject. Anyways thanks for the video hope to see more, and possibly hearing from other commenters about it.
