    This video originally had a much more lighthearted tone, but I decided to take things seriously to get in the spirit of the Spooky Season... 🎃💀🧛‍♂️
    I made an AVGN intro parody for the intro of this video, you can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/F0U7a-fX1gg/w-d-xo.html
    Uploaded in January... tells you how long I've had this idea for 👴
    This scrapped video also has the SINGLE MOST-CURSED thumbnail I've ever made, so you're all lucky to have seen Axo's beautiful modelling work instead of this in your subscription/recommended feed.

    There's something so special about being at the right age to stumble across a creepypasta and have it make your spine tingle. I think even the fact having like computer time and finding this story "online" just added to the validity of them to me as a child.

    • @Colddirector

      I get why authors want their name attached to their work, but there was just something so special about uncredited yet terrifying stories appearing from the internet ether.

      I was going to say this as well, so I'm glad you mentioned it. That story is legitimately a phenomenal piece of fiction. I reread it a little while ago and it still stands up. The ending is so fucking terrifying, even today. If it was a Twilight Zone episode, it would probably be my favorite of all time. So good, I can't praise it enough.

    I remember the Tails Doll creepypasta used to give me the creeps so much. I think it's because of the abundance of gorey fanart around it lol. Also the Jeff the Killer image still spooks me to this day

    I like the Disneyland story. It’s very simple and very effective, telling its story in as few words as possible. The ending is left so ambiguous to the reader, and when paired with the photo, your mind can’t help but run wild. I think what makes the story so scary/intriguing is the concept of ‘less is more.’ For how long and shitty and way overly detailed Creepypastas have gotten over the years, there is merit in its brevity. It takes advantage of your paranoia, swirling around in your head as you think of more and more horrifying possibilities… you make *yourself* scared of it.
    Man. I wish short creepypastas were more commonplace.

    Props for pronouncing Hans Hohlbein correctly. Many english speaking TH-camrs just butcher foreign names completely and cant give a damn about researching the pronounciation.

    • @MishKoz
      @MishKoz  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      One of my biggest pet peeves when watching youtube is when the video grinds to a halt, and the narrator goes "erm..... I might pronounce this wrong" instead of just taking 2 minutes to research the pronunciation.
      Like if it's a subject that's somewhat noteworthy then there's probably some news footage of a native speaker pronouncing the word, and if that falls you can just put the word/name into Google translate and have that read it out for you, which is what I did for this video.

    There was something about those older creepypastas that had accompanied footage that made them so much more frightening. Short and sweet, having something to tie it to reality, and just enough vagueness to make your brain run laps is the perfect horror story formula.

    • @rasputinjesus
      @rasputinjesus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Idk to me, the less “lore” you have, the better. That’s what made the Backrooms so cool originally and a great return to form for internet horror but of course the whole thing had to be gameified and have an ungodly amount of lore attached after the fact that made the whole thing sterile. I remember I stopped caring about creepypastas because eventually they got to the point where writers were just shilling their novels and using the medium as a marketing gimmick and that just takes so much of it away.
      TLDR; less is more.

    a favor for a favor (not really the scariest but a genuinely gripping story with an amazing twist), necrosleep (it'll make you nauseous, trust me), the disappearance of ashley, kansas (go into it blind), and a cure for cancer (body horror at its finest) are my favorite creepypastas of all time. i will die on the hill that they still hold up today.

    The way you talk about Cervine Birth reminds men of why so many people got attached to the Navidson Record from House of Leaves, for all the flaws that book has. It’s an edit of an excerpt of a textual analysis trying to capture the language of a visual film.

    I remember at the time I did not believe in Ben Drowned's footage because it was clear to me that it was run on PJ64, using the same cheat codes I screwed around with 😅 but it was still eerie.
    I also find the original Sonic.exe flash game eerie at times. It's too gorey to always be eerie tho and I imagine it's very difficult to explore the concept again to make it work.

    I really like your Buried Alive interpretation, I feel like all of my (admittedly vague) memories of videos talking about the creepypasta when I was a kid focused more on being like "why would this have been put in the game? isn't that messed up?" for the horror instead of actually analyzing it. I also think tying its ideas with Gateway of the Mind was really cool

    lol just rewatched Mario iceberg yet again yesterday. I've been super nostalgic for when I first found the classics in 2011 this year especially. Most aren't genuinely good per say of course but they're better than later stuff and way more charming. Dead Bart I discovered relistening might actually be the best one made. It was done before all the cliches tried to copy it and make it overbearing. It's also just deceptively descriptively brief enough to get the point across and not go too far and have you question too much or go "Wait that's stupid." My favorite stuff though is to listen to old uploads of yuriofwind's bs series lol. It mostly inspired me to make my own joke pastas while also capturing the spirit of the good classics cause I love how they were all based on nostalgia even then. It's very comforting and relatable engaging stuff despite the context, which is probably why they got so popular to begin with. Too bad that and then sonic.exe coming a year after I found them completely ruined everything and murdered the image brutality. God I hate that story lol.

    There's a certain magic and uncertainness of creepypastas that modern online horror stories will never achieve again. The feeling of "what if its true" is unfortunately gone now.... Sucks to be a cynical adult now.

    The original Slenderman Photoshops from the Something Awful forums back in the day still give me the chills, and Ben Drowned still holds up incredibly well to this day. I remember for awhile I was too scared to touch Majora's Mask after reading Jadusable's story back in like 2011, even though I had already beaten it once before when I was younger. Great video, Mish. The only Creepypasta I remember giving me the chills was the Lavander town Syndrome Creepypasta. Not because I believed it, but because I never found proof of it never happening. "No one says it's real, but also no one says it's *not* real". That insecurity made me, unconciously, never aknowledge the story as just a Creepypasta. To this day I have to remind myself that kids didn't take their lives because of a spooky tune of a GB game

    I remember my first experience with creepypasta was the Jeff the Killer image. I probably saw it on an old now-defunct message board or something like that. The fact that the image alone, with no story attached terrified me on such a level was crazy. I remember spending nights huddled up under a blanket watching those creepypasta reading videos and being too scared to peek out in fear that I might see a figure in my room. I know it's mainly childhood naivety, but I wish horror still hit me like it did back then.
