  • Areas off to the side are often some of my favorite areas in video games. But sometimes, making the detour for a mediocre secret just isn't worth it. Today I'll be looking at a few dungeons that more or less meet the criteria of being considered side areas, as they are lacking quite a bit of content, especially in the original Generation 2 games of Pokemon.

    Edit: I was wrong about getting a Tyrogue egg in Mt Mortar, you just receive it normally. You still need to keep a space open in your party though. I think I just had to confused with the optional Riolu egg from Sinnoh.
    Commenting just so that there isn't _too much_ update stuff sandwiched at the end:
    - the footage may look really grainy in this video. That's because I was using the streaming settings in which I had to have the bitrate lower so that it would play smoothly. I didn't notice until *after* I had recorded most of the footage.
    - speaking of streams, I'm going to be MIA from August 23-27 so there'll be no uploads or streams on those days. The channel has no set schedule but I'm also not just abandoning the no-damage run.
    - this video may seem way too short to have to break it into chapters in the description, but I made the decision to have chapters before I realized how short it'd be. Oh well.

    To be fair Dunsparce is supposed to be a Tsuchinoko, a mythological creature that a lot of people had tried to find, but never did, makes sense for it to be stupidly rare.

      There's even more to it, Tsuchinoko is often used as a metaphor for something disappointing. Mythical creatures in Japan typically possess unique powers or traits that justify their elusiveness but Tsuchinoko doesn't have anything special going for it aside from its peculiar appearance so people joke sometimes that even if you were to find it in the end of the day it's just a silly fat snake. Hence why Dunparce is just a plain Normal type with no special characteristics or strengths, it's an allusion to that metaphor.

    It's so crazy to think that Lugia was never supposed to be in the games and that before the marketing of the series became standardized they actually planned to create entire original Pokémon creatures exclusive to various media outside the games. But now even the slight variations of existing Pokémon that originate from the anime are shoehorned into the games (looking at you notch-eared Pichu and Ash-Greninja).

    i like how johto treats some of these dungeons, lorewise
    in a game like sun and moon, you'll have a ton of cutscenes in the main story explaining what diamond head is or whatever and why you should care, then you go there and you do whatever you need to do there because its required
    in johto, something like the burned tower only explains part of its story because some random old man who lives nearby tells the story of the time it was struck by lightning, its non-intrusive and lets players find stuff out about it only if they actually want to

    • @luisgusta
      @luisgusta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I think swarms were kind of a obscure mechanic back in gen 2. You had to have the right people in your pokegear and it was also a bit rare event by itself. Today with all the information we have in the internet is easy to look back and see that way, but back then even game guides didnt explain this mechanic exist in the first place.

    • @aurafox1
      @aurafox1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@luisgusta the game itself explains the mechanic rather well. The swarm trainers will always say something like "Sometimes I see lots of rare pokemon here. I'll give you a call when that happens!" Before offering you their number. I know lots of people, including myself as a kid, skip a lot of trainer dialogue, but the explanation is there.

    • @aurafox1
      @aurafox1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @KDLPro Hardcore If that's the issue then I'd argue Marill is much more of an anomaly. It's not even catchable until Mt. Mortar which is accessible as early as immediately after Ecruteak City, but it's only at 1%. The trainer who swarms Marill is located immediately south of Blackthorn, the 8th gym city. If you want to go really far out of your way to get Marill as soon as you possibly can, you'll have to beat Ecruteak, clear the Team Rocket event in Mahogany, then make a beeline through Ice Path to the Hiker south of Blackthorn, wait for the call, and only *then* do you have access to Marill at a more reasonable rarity. All this for a pokemon that evolves only once at level 18 with final stats to match that early level. (I'd also like to point out that, if you can even reach the part of Mt. Mortar with Marill in it, then you likely already have a Water-type to use Surf.
      At least the trainer that swarms Dunsparce is nearby the cave it swarms from.

    If you have a pokemon that knows surf by the time you get to Mt. Mortar, you can skip the cave entirely by surfing east from the entrance outside of ecruteak city. In the original generation 2 games, this doesn't make sense to do but if you want to skip it, by all means go ahead.
    In Pokemon Crystal and the Gen 4 remakes (HG/SS), Suicune can be found by taking the aforementioned surfing route and stopping at the middle entrance of Mt. Mortar and heading south. After the scripted event, you can continue to surf east and skip Mt. Mortar altogether as well.

    I remember spending hours adventuring and exploring every corner of the gen 2 games when I was a kid. It was really fun searching around the caves hoping to find something rare. Too bad most of them didn't really have anything cool in them. But at least I had fun pranking my friends and making them believe if they searched hard enough they could find a secret door leading to a mew event lmao

    Slowpoke Well is worth a mention, since when you get there the first time, you're on a linear path to stop Team Rocket. Later on, when you get Strength and Surf, you can actually go deeper into it and find wild under-leveled Slowbro and a guy that gives you a King's Rock, which is (as far as I remember) the only place in the game where you can get one.

    • @starmangalaxy2001
      @starmangalaxy2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can actually hunt for a Kings Rock from wild slowpoke/bro but they only have it 5% of the time. Bottom of the Well is the only guaranteed one. It's also great for training since the impressive HP state of 90 on the pokes means a good amount of XP.

    Besides the dark glasses, dark cave is only great to find early game Teddursa in crystal instead of waiting till late game in gold.
    The only catch is the Pokémon will almost always flee on its first turn.
    That early on, you need to status inflict it with bellsprout or confuse it with zubat to have a chance to get it.
    I did the latter since I was going for Crobat. It took 4 encounters over 30 mins or so but I got it.
    I think it’s encounter rate is 5% and it only appears during the day.

    Thanks a lot for this video! Tho, I wouldn't say that Dark Cave is completely useless. See, after receiving surf (after you have defeated Morty) you can move farther north in the cave where you can encounter high leveled Ursarings (might only be crystal version tho).
    I did actually explore all the dungeons in HgSs a while back, but I always wondered if there was a difference in the originals. Those games seems to be hiding so much more and I get such a unique feeling while I play them.

    I found larvatar in dark cave before. I think it makes that worth it. I also just wanted to catch all the letters of unknown just to write words with them in the pokemon box. Literally dumb, but so is turn based combat so i mean its fun so i guess its worth it. It depends if your a catchemall or a lv100 trainer or just catching the pokemon you like and winning with them, which is what i tend to do. I like the idea that there is something that i could do, but i don't have to and i don't really lose out by not doing it right away. Such side areas hold just enough curiosity for you to want to maybe go look, but at the same time, finding new pokemon is cool, catching them and finding out they suck is another story and another problem so there is that.

    I love this video, and it's something I noticed myself but could never really articulate, given that you don't ever need to go through most of these dungeons, so out of sight out of mind. I think it's a little disingenuous though to give Union Cave the free pass and say "you can come back" when slowpoke well has an equal ratio of explorable content and unique items if you come back later. Overall though cool video man.

    Not sure if you're still very active but just wanted to say I love these Pokemon videos of yours. You're just about the only person on this god forsaken website I can listen to talk about Pokemon facts and I love learning more about the first and second generations of the games. All the other mfs that talk about this game franchise for children tend to act like their audience is children. Go figure. Thank you for making these videos.
